Sunbasket is a much newer company compared to the other services in our review. Sunbasket joined the meal delivery scene around seven years ago and has been steadily gaining popularity.
Healthy, organic meals
Sunbasket has made a name for itself by focusing on healthy and organic meal kits. If you're into a no-meat or no-dairy approach, there are also options for vegans and vegetarians. As an exciting bonus, Sunbasket goes beyond just meal kits; it now has a handy online marketplace where you can add grocery items like fresh meat, fish, seafood, cheese, coffee, and snacks to your weekly box.
Meals arrive fresh and crisp
With approximately 99% USDA-certified organic produce, you can count on your items arriving fresh and crisp. Plus, Sunbasket makes it easy for you to access all the nutritional information you need when making selections and during delivery. So whether you're looking for gluten-free or another diet style, you'll get a complete meal experience from Sunbasket.
Service Overview
Gluten free added to any meal design
Sunbasket stands out because you can get gluten-free alternatives added to any of their meals. The mix'n-match style of meal design makes it easy to pick and choose what kind of meal features you want in your boxes. When it's time to pick out your delivery boxes, there are two ways to get meals from Sunbasket - the basic Fresh and ready plan, or the traditional Meal Kit.
Basic plan: Fresh and Ready
The cheaper meal plan is "Fresh and Ready" which includes meals that are prepared in advance and don't require any cooking. These meals start at $9.99 per serving, and you can choose from 4 to 10 meals each week. Even though these meals are usually meant for one person, you can add extra meals or double up for yourself. To prepare them, you need to heat them up in your oven or microwave, and then you're ready for mealtime. Depending on the number of servings you pick, the weekly cost ranges from $39.65 to $99.99.
Gluten free Fresh and Ready meals
The Fresh and Ready section has a variety of gluten-free-friendly meal options. Some example meals that support a gluten-free diet include:
Top tier plan: Meal Kit
If you prefer a more hands-on approach to your cooking, the regular Meal Kit from Sunbasket is the way to go. These kits ship you all the necessary ingredients for crafting your own gluten-free gourmet meals. The prep time takes between 15 to 40 minutes depending on the recipe, and the prices start at $11.49 per serving. What makes this selection unique is that you can mix'n-match your meals. For example, you can choose gluten-free foods or vegetarian extras without any extra cost. Another notable change from the "Fresh and Ready" style is that the shipments of the Meal Kits are designed for 2-4 people, and include up to 5 meals per week. So, when you calculate the cost per serving, a Sunbasket Meal Kit ranges from $45.96 per week for a 2-person 2-meal kit to $229.80 per week for a 4-person 5-meal kit.
Gluten free Meal Kit options
Here are some of the gluten-free meals you can expect from Sunbasket's Meal Kits:
100% mouthwatering guarantee
Standing out from the pack, Sunbasket provides a 100% Mouthwatering Guarantee. Whereas most companies in our review have no (or a minimal) refund policy, Sunbasket goes the extra mile so that you'll be pleased with their Meal Delivery services. If you're not satisfied, Sunbasket is committed to resolving it. All you need to do is contact their Help Center within 7 days of your delivery. Additionally, the Sunbasket subscription promises no long-term commitment. Your kits and meals come every week, but you can skip a week or cancel whenever you want. Even if you're away from home, Sunbasket has you covered and can deliver to your vacation spot too.
Reviewers love the all-in-one approach of Sunbasket
Sunbaksst has earned a "B-" rating from the Better Business Bureau, which isn't as impressive as some of the "A+” ratings we've seen from Meal Delivery rivals on our list. However, customer reviews on Trustpilot paint a more comprehensive picture. These show that Sunbasket has an impressive 4.6-star average from thousands of reviews. Food and fitness blogs have also awarded Sunbasket with numerous 5-star ratings, praising everything from quality ingredients to delicious flavors.
Recipes and snacks are a hit
Customers love the straightforward recipes in the kits and note that the Fresh and Ready meals taste incredible. Subscribers also appreciate the a la carte market, where you can add extras to your meals or grab some snacks if you're in the mood. And all of these delicious items are yours without ever having to venture out to the grocery store.
First place pick for gluten-free meal flexibility
If you're looking for the ultimate one-stop-shop for meal delivery, Sunbasket is the one. This service stands out by allowing you to choose what fits your lifestyle best. With various diet options, including Gluten Free, Sunbasket allows you to mix'n-match all of their meal types and filter out the meals you can't have on your particular diet. The pricing is competitive, especially for those choosing up to 10 meals per week, which offers a single person 1 meal per day plus a few lunches. Whether you want to cook your own meals or have a quick and easy solution for gluten-free breakfasts, lunches, or dinners, Sunbasket offers a meal style that suits your lifestyle. This places it at the top among the companies we reviewed, supported by customer reviews praising the tasty flavors and easy preparation. Unsurprisingly, Sunbasket receives a 5-star rating and the first-place spot on our list.
Modify Health is a service that focuses on creating meal plans based on recommendations by healthcare providers nationwide. These freshly-prepared and medically-tailored meals are designed to be quick and easy. You can eat in about 2 minutes, with no meal prep necessary.
Created by dieticians and chefs
Developed by dietitians and chefs, these meals guarantee a delightful fusion of great taste and health benefits, featuring organic, gluten-free, and non-GMO ingredients. Modify Health has been around since 2019, and it focuses on creating better meal experiences for customers with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). With options that include totally gluten-free meals, it stands out as a service that focuses more on the medical side of the gluten-free experience.
Service Overview
Basic plan: Gluten Free Meals
This plan includes a weekly portion of breakfasts and entrees that support a gluten-free lifestyle. You can add as many of each type to your box as you want so long as you order a minimum of six total meals. The pricing is separated by meal type. Breakfasts cost $9.95 each and regular entrees cost $13.45 each. So, to put together a plan, you can buy only breakfasts to get the minimum cost of $59.70 per week (with 6 breakfasts per week). If you want to focus only on entrees, the starting price would be $80.70 per week. There appears to be no limit on how many meals and entrees you can add to your order. But if you want to put together a full week's worth of food (7 breakfasts and 14 entrees), the cost at Modify Health would be $257.95 per week.
Top plan: Gluten-Free FIT Quickstart Program
The other way to get gluten-free meals from Modify Health is the 6-week Gluten-Free FIT Quickstart program. This program is designed to guide you with expert support from personal dietitians. Throughout the program, you'll receive 3 virtual consultations to help with your gluten-free journey, you'll be able to access downloadable tools and resources, and you'll be able to take part in virtual cooking demonstrations. As a bonus, you'll earn a 50% discount on your first order of meals and receive a Modify Health starter pack.
Quickstart Program costs
The program itself costs $399. However, after some research, we realized this doesn't include the cost of any meals (hence the 50% off discount). So, on top of paying a one-time fee of $399, you'll still need to pay the same costs for meals ($59.70 to $257.95 per week). Despite the fact that the FIT program earns you 50% off your first meal purchase, it may not offset enough costs to make it worth over $500.
Money back on program costs
Modify Health does have a refund policy, but it's limited to only some of its offerings. Their guarantee comes in the form of a "One-time fee money-back guarantee”. This means that you can only get a refund on items that are "one-time fees” like the FIT Quickstart Program. The guarantee states that if you want your money back for any reason within 30 days of purchase, Modify Health will refund you right away. However, the refund does not cover the cost of meals. So, if you ordered meals alongside your program order, you'll be out of luck on those.
Mixed reviews, but solid scores overall
On the bright side, Modify Health has an impressive "A” rating from the Better Business Bureau. However, the feedback is more mixed when you get to the reviews. On one hand, food bloggers and health bloggers are pretty happy with Modify Health. The company has an average of 4 stars out of 5 from most food blog reviews. On the other hand, third-party review sites show a much different story. On Trustpilot, the average rating for Modify Health is a 2.9-star rating out of 5. Customers who loved the meals said the variety was very competitive and the flavors were amazing. And with only 2 reviews on Trustpilot, the blog reviews show a much wider range of customers reflected, and those reviews show much higher scores in general.
Competitive flexibility and medically backed
If backing from medical professionals is something you want on your radar, Modify Health might be a great meal delivery service for you. Focusing on quick and easy prep, Modify Health provides gluten-free meals for as many days of the week as you need. While we're not sure how great the value is for the FIT Quickstart Program, the rest of the meals (developed by medical pros and dieticians) are at the top of the pack. Reviews note that flavors are great, and with an "A” rating from the BBB, the company has a solid professional reputation.
High recommendation
With these things in mind, Modify Health scores a very high rating overall. Though it doesn't beat out our top option, which supports Gluten Free Meal Delivery with an online supermarket, Modify Health can be a great way to get quick meals designed for your health needs without the extra hassle of cooking.
Fresh N Lean is a meal delivery service based in Anaheim, California. The company began in 2010 and has been committed to creating fresh, ready-to-eat meals for singles across the US.
Focus on convenience
The Fresh N Lean meals are made to be stored easily in your fridge and ready for quick reheating in the microwave whenever you get hungry. The goal is to give you the convenience of tasty, fresh meals without the fuss of cooking every day. With weekly deliveries that cover either 5 or 7 days with customizable numbers of meals per week, you have a lot of flexibility with your gluten-free menu at Fresh N Lean. Fresh N Lean also emphasizes high-quality ingredients like organic produce, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, and sustainable seafood. However, this service doesn't offer a specific gluten-free plan, which makes it harder to find what you need here.
Service Overview
Mix & match
At Fresh N Lean, all of the meal plans support gluten-free diets, but none of them are specifically only gluten-free. Instead, the process is more of a mix'n-match style. You have to start by picking a core meal plan - and there's a noticeable gap in pricing depending on which meal plan you start with.
Most affordable plan: Vegetarian
The most affordable meal plan option that supports gluten-free is the Vegetarian plan, starting at $42.45 per week. This covers one meal per day for five days. If you prefer a more comprehensive meal plan with three meals per day, seven days a week, the cost increases to $178.29 per week. Now, once you've selected your meal style, you can add wheat as an "allergy” so your meals will come wheat-free. You can also ask to exclude gluten as an ingredient in your meals.
Vegetarian meal options
Some of the meals you can expect to get from the Vegetarian Plan include:
However, it's not clear from the menu how asking for changes like no wheat or no gluten will change the overall menu, so it might be worth reaching out to the company before ordering.
Most expensive plan: Paleo
The most expensive meal plan with gluten-free options at Fresh N Lean is the Paleo meal plan. You can start with a minimum of $54.85 for one meal per day across five days (5 meals per week). On the higher end, the cost goes up significantly. The most expensive Paleo plan gets you three meals daily for seven days (21 meals per week) and costs $223.79 per week. Like the Vegetarian Plan, wheat and gluten are treated like allergies so you have to select them separately to make sure that gluten-free meals are included in the plan.
Paleo meal options
Some of the food you can expect to find in the Paleo Plan include:
Refund policy lacks transparency
Fresh N Lean does have a refund policy, but the terms aren't super transparent. According to the site's FAQ, Fresh N Lean doesn't guarantee refunds; instead, they handle any problems on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, Fresh N Lean doesn't dive into the specific criteria you'd need to meet to qualify for a refund. While the company pledges to do its best to "accommodate" customers, the actual guidelines could use a boost in transparency.
Well-rated for flavor and selection
Despite the less-than-stellar refund policy, Fresh N Lean has an excellent reputation overall. The company holds an impressive "A+" rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, and it's got some solid ratings on third-party websites. On average, Fresh N Lean earns 4.1 stars out of 5, with the most recent reviews being 5 stars. Customers reviewed customer service, flavor, delivery timing, and meal selection all with overwhelmingly positive feedback. While some mid-tier reviews express a desire for more flavor, overall, the general consensus is that Fresh N Lean is a great place to try for tasty meals.
A fan favorite, but falls behind for gluten-free meals
Fresh N Lean has an amazing variety of food, and its reputation is top-notch. With an impressive "A+" rating and glowing reviews from customers, it's one of the leading choices for meal delivery services. However, for specifically gluten-free meals, it falls behind a little. While you can ask for meal modifications by stating a wheat allergy and asking them to remove gluten as an ingredient, the fact that gluten-free isn't built into any of the meals is a little disappointing. It's not entirely clear what the modifications will do to the meals overall. Fresh N Lean still earns a high rating due to its positive reputation and meal selection, but is limited due to the limitations on gluten-free meals.
Green Chef has been around since 2014. The company is based in Boulder, Colorado, and offers more than 50 weekly meal kits. Every Green Chef box comes with pre-portioned ingredients, so you can learn new gluten-free recipes each week, turning cooking into a stress-free and enjoyable experience.
8 Gluten-free diet styles
This Gluten Free Meal Delivery option offers up to 8 different diet styles that you can mix'n-match together to get everything you want in one box (including gluten-free meals). You also get the freedom to upgrade meals with premium proteins regardless of the meal style it started as. This means even various vegan and veggie meals can be upgraded with meat if you just like the flavors. The best part? Going gluten-free with Green Chef doesn't mean missing out on restaurant-quality meals, and if you've always wanted to learn to cook like a pro, Green Chef is the way to start.
Service Overview
Only one plan: mix'n-match
At Green Chef, meal kits are created through a mix'n-match style selection process. Green Chef offers eight different diet "styles" to choose from, including Calorie Smart, Gluten Free, Protein, Keto, Vegan, Veggie, Quick and Easy, Mediterranean, Low-Carb, and Premium. You can pick one or all of these dietary preferences to create a box customized just for you.
Pricing for gluten-free meals
To understand the pricing for gluten-free meals at Green Chef, we focused specifically on that style (without selecting other preferences). However, the cost remains the same even if you add extra preferences. You can choose between 3 to 4 meals per week, providing one meal a day for 2-6 people based on how many people you're looking to feed. On the other hand, a single person could enjoy meals for 6-8 days by splitting the portions for multiple people in half. The starting cost for the gluten-free meals is $80.94 per week for the 3-meal plan for 2 people (3 meals per week with 2 servings per meal), while the highest cost is $215.82 per week for the 4-meal plan serving 6 people (4 meals per week with 6 servings per meal).
Gluten-free meal options
Some of the meals you can expect from Green Chef include:
Hints at a refund policy
During our research, we couldn't find straightforward details about a refund policy or satisfaction guarantee from Green Chef. The only info we dug up was hidden in the shipping policies page. If an unexpected event occurs, like the shipping truck breaks down or there are weather-related delays on your order, Green Chef hints that customer service might help out. So, if your box doesn't arrive cool to the touch and at a temperature of 40 degrees or below, you can reach out to customer service. But, it's not clear whether the solution would be a new shipment or a refund.
Customers love the flavors
Even though Green Chef doesn't have a clearly stated refund policy, it has an impressive reputation. The company holds a top-notch "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau. Fitness and food bloggers are big fans of Green Chef, giving it an average of 4 stars for tasty and unique meals. And, when we researched Green Chef on verified third-party review sites, the score was around the same. Trustpilot showed an average rating of 3.8 stars for Green Chef, which is comparable to the 4-star average we saw from blog reviews. According to these reviews, customers generally find the recipes easy to follow and the meals delicious. Some negative reviews mentioned shipping issues and missing meals, but these are outnumbered by the positive reviews and the "A+” rating from the BBB.
Best if you like cooking for a family
Green Chef stands out as a great gluten-free service, especially if you like cooking or need meals designed for 2 to 6 people. If you live solo, you can divide the meals for leftovers, making your kit last for anywhere from 6-24 meals per week. But, if you're not into cooking, this Gluten Free Meal Delivery service might not be the best fit. Also, with an average delivery of 3-4 days of food at 1 meal per day, Green Chef offers fewer total meals (even when split) compared to other companies in our review. This, coupled with the lack of a refund policy or guarantee, keeps it from scoring a top spot on our list. If you want something that provides 3 unique meals per day, you might want to consider other options. Green Chef still gets a solid rating, though, since it's a great choice for cooking fans and those planning gluten-free family dinners.
Since 2005, Magic Kitchen has been providing personalized meals for a variety of specific dietary needs. These include special cases like Diabetic, Renal, Dialysis, and Portion Controlled meals.
American and Italian food favorites
The Magic Kitchen menu mainly includes American and Italian favorites, though it may not explore more adventurous culinary options seen at competitors with organic meals or recipes from other countries. Magic Kitchen doesn't have a changing menu, though. So, you'll probably be choosing from the same meals often. But, this could be a bonus, if you know exactly what you like. Also, the meals are typically frozen, which might not be ideal if you're looking for a more gourmet experience.
Service Overview
Basic plan: A La Carte
Of the two ways you can order meals from Magic Kitchen, the a la carte menu is the simplest, and there are plenty of gluten-free items to choose from. The a la carte selections are broken down into parts, so you won't find full "meals". Instead, you'll find individual entrees and a handful of separate sides. Prices range from $7.99 for a single-serving entree to $31.99 for a 2-serving entree portion.
Basic plan meal choices
Some of the meals you can find on the a la carte menu include:
Best gluten-free plan: Gluten Free Meals
When we got to the "menu-complete meals” it was a little confusing. Instead of offering several preselected packaged meals, these options were also sold a la carte style. The main difference between the meals and the traditional a la carte menu is that the "meals” are full meals with entrees and sides. However, neither method offers a "week's worth” of food like you'll find at other meal delivery services. So, for your gluten-free meals at Magic Kitchen, you'll just have to buy the ones you like as you need them, which requires more hands-on purchasing time than some competitors. The pricing for the meals ranges from $6.99 per serving to $11.99 per serving.
Gluten free meal choices
Here are some of the gluten-free full meals you can find at Magic Kitchen:
If you buy it, it's yours
Magic Kitchen doesn't offer refunds. Once you've paid and your order is processed, there's no option to get your money back. On the bright side, Magic Kitchen doesn't require a recurring subscription. So, you can order as needed, even just one meal to try out their food. However, the company's policies mean it remains one of the less customer-friendly choices on our list.
Customers are impressed with the food quality
Despite some concerns with the refund policy, Magic Kitchen holds an impressive "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau. Third-party review sites also give it an average rating of 4.3 stars out of 5. Customers were primarily concerned about the website's confusing layout and navigation issues, but outside of that, the reviews were extremely positive. Customers praised the food's taste and easy prep. Plus, customers appreciate the option to send these meals to friends and family. Without a subscription requirement, it makes it easy to pick out just a few meals or surprise a loved one such as college students or elderly parents. Many reviews express high satisfaction, especially for specific age groups like the elderly.
Feels a bit like TV dinners
In the grand scheme of things, Magic Kitchen is a solid option for gifts or making sure your aging parent (or grandparent) enjoys delicious meals that fit their diet restrictions. But for those passionate about gluten-free eating, and creating unique meal experiences, this site ranks about average. Even with the impressive "A+" rating, it doesn't make up for the fact that Magic Kitchen's prepackaged frozen meals feel a bit like TV dinners. On the other hand, if you have strict dietary requirements, Magic Kitchen is a tasty and reliable choice.
Best for seniors
If you're looking for a solid Gluten Free Meal Delivery service for senior family members that requires no cooking and quick prep times, Magic Kitchen stands out as a best-in-class. However, for a broader audience, it may be less appealing due to the frozen meals.
Territory got its start when a group of friends in Washington D.C. wanted to find tasty and healthy meals that suited their busy lives. This led to the creation of Territory in 2011. Today, Territory collaborates with chefs across the U.S. to deliver science-backed, ready-to-eat meals to customers in 27 states.
Nutrition advisors on staff
Territory designs all of its meals with a team of nutrition advisors on staff who create meals and menus that meet the standards for your health and dietary restrictions. Unlike other services that make meals in large central kitchens, Territory has local chefs working in their own certified kitchens, so your meals are prepared close by. Due to this, you get shipments more frequently with Territory than with other companies.
All meals are gluten-free
To access any details about meals or shipments, you have to sign up for an account. This might not be convenient for customers who just want to browse and look around. On the other hand, Territory tells you up front that none of their meals include three problematic ingredients: dairy, refined sugars, or gluten. So, no matter what you order from Territory, you'll be 100% gluten-free.
Service Overview
Only one plan: Mix'n-match
At Territory, the meal kit system gives you a bunch of choices. Instead of being stuck with one type of meal, you can choose from all the meals offered at Territory. The meal styles are designed to help you narrow your search. However, you can rest easy with Territory knowing that every single meal on the menu is totally gluten-free. So, no matter which of the 8 meal styles you pick, you can be sure that Territory is supporting your diet.
Meal options change depending on where you live
Now, the meal options do depend on where you live. For example, in our local area, there were only 7 Keto meals, but there were 21 Mediterranean meals to choose from. Depending on the meal style you pick, the number of available meals options can also vary. But as the meals change every week, you can look forward to new and exciting choices.
Ordering process can be tricky
The ordering process can be a bit tricky. When you start picking your meals, Territory pre-selects 8 meals for you. You can actually choose between 6, 8, 10, and 12 meals per week, but the cart will show 8 meals at the outset even if you want a different number. You can remove and add items to tailor your meals to your preferences, but if you don't settle on one of these four quantities (6, 8, 10, or 12 meals), a red notification pops up, and you won't be able to continue to purchase.
Pick and choose your meals
Figuring out the cost at Territory can be a bit tricky. It's a pick-and-choose system, meaning each meal has its own price (usually between $14.99 and $21.99 for most meals). Let's say you want an order with just the cheapest meal, the Buffalo-Style Chicken Chili with Spaghetti Squash for $14.99. To meet the minimum order of 6 meals, your weekly cost would be $89.94 if you choose this meal six times. Now, if you go for the most expensive option, the family-style Balsamic Brushed Chicken at $20.99, and go all out with 12 meals, your weekly cost would be $251.88. However, these prices can change between weeks. For example, we saw a more expensive meal at $21.99 on a different week, so expect a little pricing flexibility.
Promises to provide refunds
Territory beats out several companies in our review with one simple thing: it provides a satisfaction guarantee. According to Territory's policy, if any meal or service isn't satisfactory, they promise to give you a refund. No questions asked, although the policy doesn't mention a specific time limit. So, while it's a good idea to contact customer service sooner rather than later, their definite statement for offering refunds is a breath of fresh air.
Confusing UI causes mixed reviews
Territory's standing in terms of reputation has some drawbacks. The company lacks a rating from the Better Business Bureau, which makes it harder to gauge than some of the other services we evaluated. Although Territory is favored by food bloggers, the reviews on Trustpilot show mixed feelings, with an average rating of 3.2 stars out of 5. The feedback is evenly divided between 5-star and 1-star ratings. Positive reviewers praised the food quality and taste, while those who were less satisfied found the website setup confusing and the meal selection process frustrating. Despite these challenges, if you can navigate the confusing user interface, customers generally find the flavors worth the cost.
A solid choice with amazing potential
Territory offers some tasty meals, but their system can be a bit tricky to navigate. The fact that every meal on Territory is gluten-free is a huge bonus, and you can trust that your dietary needs will be met no matter what flavors or styles you want to try. The satisfaction guarantee is a big positive too, but the confusing add-to-cart process has caused Territory to lose ground where its reputation is concerned. However, if you're willing to tackle the challenges on Territory's website, reviews suggest that the flavors make it worthwhile. If Territory improves its website for an easier experience, it could become much more popular. Territory is especially competitive for gluten-free meals, and we hope to see more improvements in the future, as Territory has some amazing potential.
Home Chef is a company with a simple goal: to make your meals tastier and your moments at the table more enjoyable. The company was established in 2013, and since then, it's created weekly deliveries with a selection of 30+ meals.
Designed for families
Home Chef's meals are designed for families ranging from 2 to 6 people. The kits come as ingredients that are pre-measured and packed in a box for you to cook up when it arrives. This saves you the hassle of shopping or measuring at home. Home Chef is also part of the Kroger family, giving you the option to choose meals from Home Chef online or to buy items in-store. However, to see prices, you'll need to share your email and sign up, which might be a bit annoying for those who like upfront details before signing up for a service.
Service Overview
Start with a quiz
Home Chef's meal kit system starts with a quiz-based interface. Through this quiz, the site lets you choose from a variety of foods by picking the diet you want to follow. They offer five preferences: Calorie-Counting, Carb-Counting, Vegetarian, Gluten-Smart, and Keto-Friendly. You can select one or all of these dietary approaches to narrow down or expand your selection for meals. Unlike some other mix'n-match kits, Home Chef's prices change based on your selections.
Gluten-free meal pricing
Specifically looking at gluten-free meals, we'll explain the pricing for those items without choosing other preferences. For the Gluten-Smart plan, you can pick 2 to 6 meals per week. These meals can serve between 2-6 people, which means you're looking at anywhere between 2 meals per week (with 2 servings in each meal) to 6 meals per week (with up to 6 servings in each meal). If you're fine with leftovers, a single person could eat for 4-36 meals per week by splitting meals and saving the leftovers. The gluten-free plan starts at $47.96 per week for the 2-meal plan for 2 people and goes up to $359.64 per week for the 6-meal option serving 6 people. As a comparison, the cost for the Keto-Friendly diet ranges from $55.96 to $431.64, making the gluten-free boxes more affordable than some of the other meal styles at Home Chef. There's also a flat fee of $10.99 for shipping on every box.
Gluten-free meal choices
If you're curious about what kind of meals you'll find with the gluten-free meal box, here are some of the ones available at the time of this review:
Refunds for meals under $100
Home Chef, unlike many of its competitors, has a refund policy. If you get a Home Chef product and find it isn't satisfactory (due to defects or other reasons), you can request a Home Chef credit or a refund. As long as you contact the Home Chef support team within seven days of delivery, you should be good to go. However, there's one snag. If your order costs more than $100, you won't receive credit or a full refund matching the entire product's value. So, if you're concerned about trying the kits and hoping for a refund if you don't like them, you might want to start with a smaller order to make sure you'll qualify for the refund policy.
Not Rated and problems abound
Even though Home Chef has been around for more than a decade, the company's reputation doesn't really impress. The Better Business Bureau gave Home Chef a worrying "NR” rating, and on verified third-party review sites, it only has a 2.8-star average rating. Most customers complained about Home Chef's food specifically. A lot of customers feel the flavors are dull, almost like something you'd find in the frozen section of a grocery store. Others had trouble with customer support. In numerous reviews, people showed photo proof that their delivered meals had split open or leaked, making them inedible.
Doesn't make gluten-free cooking tastier or simpler
The downsides of Home Chef are pretty glaring. Home Chef is one of the pricier services in our review, and with a host of complaints about the quality of the food and issues with delivery, it doesn't seem like a good deal. In many cases, customers would have been better off just cooking gluten-free for themselves, which defeats the purpose of the meal delivery kit. The "NR" rating from the BBB raises a lot of concerns about this Gluten Free Meal Delivery service. Even features like family meals and cook-it-yourself options don't make this company stand out from its not-so-great reputation.
Billing itself as "more than just meal delivery”, Trifecta stands out as a meal delivery service that focuses on athletics, fitness, and weight loss. Although it has some positive aspects, overall disappointing customer reviews have dropped this service in our ratings.
Dig for the gluten-free details
While the company does offer gluten-free meals, locating the details requires a little digging. According to the drop-down menu on Trifecta's main page, they only offer 4 meal styles. A little extra research will show that all of the meals at Trifecta are gluten-free. As a bonus, there is a lot of flexibility with the Trifecta meal plans. You can get support for allergies and sensitivities outside of gluten, and if you want to be totally hands-off, you can let the Trifecta chefs choose your meals for the week. Though, if you prefer to know exactly what you're getting, you can choose it yourself too. Plus if you just want to shop more a la carte style, you can grab their meal prep entrees instead.
Service Overview
Low-cost plan: Plant Based
Since all of the plans at Trifecta are gluten-free, we decided to showcase the least and most expensive plans you can choose from at this provider. The cheapest option at Trifecta is the Plant Based plan. This includes different selections for entrees and breakfasts with 100% plant-based food. The cheapest plan is the 7-meal plan. This starts at $104.93 per week and includes 7 entrees (no breakfast). The plans go up to 14 meals and 7 breakfasts which costs $289.59 per week for a full 3 meals per day.
Plant-based meal choices
Some of the meals you can expect to find on the Plant Based plan include:
High end plan: Clean Meal
For the high-end plan, we had to choose between the other three meal styles as they were all the same price. To keep it simple, we checked out the pricing on the Clean Meal. This meal style is meant to help you start eating "clean” without sacrificing all of your favorite carbohydrates. The lowest cost plan is a 7-meal plan which costs $110.99. This will give you 1 meal per day and no breakfasts. The highest-cost option is the 14-meal and 7-breakfast plan which costs $310.99 per week. This definitely isn't the least expensive service out there, but offering a full three meals a day makes Trifecta very competitive.
Clean Meal options
Here are some of the meals you can expect to find in the Clean Meal plan:
Money-back guarantee on first 7 meals
The Trifecta Money-Back guarantee is another bonus of this company. The guarantee states that if you're not totally satisfied with your first order, you can get a full refund. This guarantee covers up to 7 meals or $119 worth of meal prep food. All you need to do is reach out to the Trifecta customer success team within 10 days of your delivery, and they'll sort everything out for you.
Quality is declining over time
As excited as we were about some of the great features at Trifecta, the reviews brought that excitement to a screeching halt. Let's start with the good news. According to Google Reviews, Trifecta is a highly popular service with a solid 4.6 stars out of 5 from 1,000+ individual reviews. However, that's the only good score Trifecta has. Unfortunately, the company holds an abysmal "F” rating from the Better Business Bureau, and an equally startling 1.6-star average from Trustpilot. Customers complained about packages being opened before delivery, and in recent months, the quality of the food has declined.
Low ratings take it out of the competition
Given that Trifecta is one of the more expensive services in our review, the poor reviews and scores from both the BBB and verified review sites put a significant ding in Trifecta's reputation. While we're still impressed with a 100% gluten-free menu, and the 3-meal-a-day option makes it a solid choice for customers looking to fill every meal every week, we just can't ignore the "F” rating. So, for this review, Trifecta falls to a lower rating overall. However, we hope they'll work on their customer service so that the BBB scores and other user ratings match up with some of the more positive feedback from Google Reviews in the future.
Splendid Spoon is a meal delivery service that stands out for its 100% plant-based meals. This family-owned business was opened in 2013 by a mom of two who went to school for nutrition. On top of having a plant-based approach, there is no dairy in their offerings.
Organic ingredients
Focused on wholesome ingredients as close to their natural state as possible, they prioritize organic sourcing for the "Dirty Dozen" ingredients. And, embracing a gluten-free stance, Splendid Spoon's meals are all 100% free of refined white flour and other gluten-containing grains. You can choose from plans starting with 7, 14, or 21 meals, and these pre-portioned meals require zero prep work, making them a hassle-free addition to your fridge or freezer, ready whenever you are.
Service Overview
Every meal is gluten-free
Splendid Spoon doesn't offer different diet styles. Instead; the company simply offers a site that covers all the bases. Every meal you pick from Splendid Spoon is vegan, gluten-free, and does not contain any dairy products or artificial sweeteners.
Only one plan: mix'n-match
You can choose between 7, 14, or 21 different meals in each shipment, meaning you can select enough food for 1, 2, or 3 meals per day for an entire week. These meals are a little different than competitors though: with a mix of smoothies, soups, and noodles, you're not getting as many full "dishes” as you might with other meal services. For example, the 7 meal plan, costing $76.93 per week, contains 2 smoothies, 3 soups, 1 noodle meal, and 1 dish. When you go up to 14 meals, it costs $156.26 per week and you can expect to find 5 smoothies, 5 soups, 2 noodle meals, and 2 dishes. Finally, for the 21 meal plan, which costs $226.79 per week, you can expect to receive 7 smoothies, 7 soups, 4 noodle meals, and 3 dishes.
Pricing is a little confusing
Finding the prices was a little confusing because they were listed differently on different pages. Plus, many of the prices had strike-through marks as if they were on sale, but no mention of a sale was listed. So, the prices we listed in our comparison were the highest we found on the site. For example, the 21-meal plan showed prices from as low as $174.29 per week to $191.79 per week to $209.29 per week before we found the listing for $226.79. These were all the same exact meals, but the numbers were listed in different areas of the site. As far as we could tell, there were no differences in the meals or inclusions, just different pricing, almost like the site hadn't been updated properly which was very confusing. On the bright side, you can select which items you want to fit into those categories, but you are a little limited by the numbers. For example, you can't add a 4th "dish” to your order.
Meal choices
Here are some of the meals you can expect to find in each category:
14-day refund policy
If you're not happy with a delivery or something's not right with your package, Splendid Spoon says you can shoot them an email to get the issue resolved. However, the refund statement was hidden in their terms and conditions page, which raised some questions about transparency. Splendid Spoon also noted that any refunds or credits are "at their discretion,” and there were no guidelines for what issues might qualify for a refund. On the other hand, their refund period is much longer than many competitors. You have fourteen days from when your account got charged for that delivery to bring up a question about the order and request a refund.
Reputation isn't splendid
Unfortunately, for vegan fans, this 100% plant-based meal delivery service doesn't have a great reputation. The company holds a concerning "C-" rating from the Better Business Bureau. And according to third-party reviews, the company only has a 2.7 out of 5-star average. Yikes! Based on feedback from customers, Splendid Spoon falls behind in shipping, selection variety, and problems with orders getting lost. On the positive side, customers who enjoyed the service specifically praised the flavor of the Splendid Spoon smoothies, but that was pretty much it.
Not worth the vegan meals
While having a fully vegan and gluten-free menu sounds great, Splendid Spoon has a few red flags that make this option less competitive. First, the pricing is very confusing. With up to 4 different prices listed for the exact same plans, it can be hard to tell what the final cost will be. On top of that, customers complained about shipments and food selection, which are two major points for meal delivery services. If you can't get reliable deliveries, there's not a huge bonus to going with a delivery service rather than handling your gluten-free diet yourself. So, with a "C-” rating backing up our concerns, Splendid Spoon earns a lower rating in this review.
Bistro MD is a meal delivery service that's been around since 2005. The company offers meal delivery plans that include more than 150 chef-prepared meals every week.
Ready in 5 minutes
All of the Bistro MD meals are ready in just 5 minutes, according to the site. Plus, whether you're into healthy eating, need diabetes-friendly or gluten-free options, or managing weight during menopause, there are meals tailored specifically to your diet. And, Bistro MD offers a fun addition: EATS (Essential and Tasty Snacks). This way you can add some extra flavor and fun to your gluten-free journey. The goal of Bistro MD is to provide you a personal chef experience without breaking the bank.
Service Overview
Best gluten-free plan: Gluten Free
The programs at Bistro MD are specifically designed for particular diets. For the gluten-free option, Bistro MD offers a full plan that covers 5 or 7 days of meals with the flexibility to choose a full day of food (3 meals per day) or just lunches and dinners each day. Plus, all of their gluten-free meals are tested by the FDA and do not contain wheat, barley, or rye. Pricing-wise, Bistro MD is pretty competitive. The lowest priced plan is a 5-day plan which includes lunches and dinners for 5 days of the week (10 meals total). This costs $149.90 per week. The top-level plan is a 7-day plan which includes 7 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 6 dinners, so you can have a "my night” meal on your own if you want to go off the Bistro MD selection. So, you get a total of 20 meals per week for $219.80.
Gluten-free meal choices
Here are some of the meals you can expect to see from Bistro MD's gluten-free program:
Missing a refund policy
When it comes to shipment, all the meals are made fresh, then flash-frozen, and kept cold with eco-friendly packaging and dry ice. However, if something goes wrong with an order or if you don't like the program, there aren't any clear statements about what Bistro MD is willing to do to help. The company says its customer service team is ready to assist you, but there's no mention of refunds or re-shipments. And, since the program is based on an automatic subscription, if you want to stop, you'll have to go in and cancel it yourself.
"F” rating from the BBB
Despite the company's impressive meal selection and comprehensive gluten-free plan, Bistro MD has other red flags outside of their (lack of) return policy. The Better Business Bureau has given Bistro MD an abysmal "F" rating, and there were 41 different complaints from customers on the BBB at the time of this review. Third-party review sites showed feedback that was a little higher than an "F" rating, with an average score of 3 stars across different sites.
Customer feedback shows warning signs
It's clear that customers have mixed feelings about Bistro MD. One person said the culinary experience was "boring", and many of the reviews offered no praise for the taste of the food. Others complained about the customer service. The general consensus was that it's nearly impossible to reach a representative at Bistro MD when things go wrong with the food or delivery.
Doesn't make the cut
At the end of the day, Bistro MD raises quite a few concerns. The company has a huge red flag from the BBB which awarded it an "F" rating. And since customers weren't thrilled with the taste or overall experience of the food, Bistro MD ended up at the bottom of our list. If you're not going to enjoy your delivered gluten-free meals, you might as well cook your own at that point, and worry less about the end result. Since these programs are meant to make your gluten-free experience better, Bistro MD doesn't make the cut. For these reasons, Bistro MD gets a 1.5-star rating as a Gluten Free Meal Delivery service.
The history of gluten-free diets can be traced back to the identification of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten. Gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, appears in a lot of commonly-eaten foods even on other health-conscious diets. So, in the early 20th century, Dutch pediatrician Willem Dicke recognized the connection between wheat consumption and celiac symptoms.
The gluten-free diet gained prominence as the primary treatment for celiac disease in the mid-20th century. However, it wasn't until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that gluten-free diets gained widespread popularity beyond medical necessity. Fueled by a growing interest in health and wellness, as well as a surge in gluten sensitivity awareness, the gluten-free trend became a cultural phenomenon. This led to a variety of gluten-free products and a broader adoption of gluten-free diets in grocery stores, restaurants, and home cooking.
When you think of the word "diet”, what comes to mind? Tracking ingredients, preparing separate meals, doing extra work, and researching to make sure that foods are safe for your gluten-free diet are some of the things that become common roadblocks to staying on your chosen diet. Thankfully, meal delivery services help simplify those problems.
So, what is it you're really getting with a Gluten Free Meal Delivery service? Companies that offer Gluten Free Meal Delivery offer prepared meals or packages of ingredients designed to provide tasty meals that support your gluten-free dietary needs. Some programs include a full 7 days of meals (at three meals a day), eliminating the need to shop completely. Instead of scrutinizing food labels for gluten, you can assemble your meals (or just pop already-prepared meals into the oven) from one of these delivery services and savor the convenience.
