Having received multiple awards between 2012 and 2017 for their innovative ed-tech offerings, Magoosh is a staple of the online test prep scene. When it comes to the GRE, their offerings are some of the best bang for your buck out there, so let's take a look at why.

A good mix of content

All plans with Magoosh include the following offerings: 8 full sections of officially licensed GRE content, comprehensive coverage of math and verbal analytical writing overviews, a databank of video lessons, 1,600 practice questions, 3 practice tests, and integrated study schedules. Magoosh offers expert support in the form of email and chats (no live tutors unfortunately), and all plans include a GRE score predictor based on aggregate data of Magoosh participants, as well as a +5 score guarantee.

Magoosh has some friendly refund and guarantee policies. Not only are you able to return their product within 7 days for a 100% refund, Magoosh also offers a +5 point guarantee. Reviews trend positive

Customer reviews of Magoosh tend to be positive. Aggregate review sites show high ratings for Magoosh, and user reviews from GRE dedicated discussion boards attest to the high quality of their materials. Magoosh has also earned an "A+” from the Better Business Bureau, which speaks to a responsive company with a well-supported product.

Target Test Prep stakes their claim with a range of high quality test-prep options, from individualized study, to live-online courses, and one-on-one tutors. Of all the GRE study products on our list, Target Test Prep offers the best value for highly-structured self-led and live-online classes.

Good value for what you get

Target Test Prep's price is comparable to - and actually less than - most of their major online-class competitors. As such, they offer some of the best value at the price point. Here's how it breaks down:

• Self-led GRE prep can be purchased for $149 per month, $299 for four months, or $399 for six months. That price will get you 4,000 quant and verbal GRE questions and 1,000 quant and verbal videos, an adaptable/personalized data-driven study plan, intelligent metrics and error analytics, "insider” knowledge of question types and traps, live expert support, and a 15 point guarantee.
• Target Test Prep's live-online classes cost $1,399. These include everything in the self-led plan, plus add 40 hours of live-online classes, and a dedicated slack channel to coordinate/crowdsource information with fellow students and class instructors.
• Target Test Prep's tutoring costs $350 per hour, and does not include any of their aforementioned study plans or materials (though they do recommend purchasing them on your own).

Prohibitively expensive tutoring plans

All in all, we appreciate Target Test Prep's compelling mixture of GRE test prep materials, customer support, and score guarantees, all at a lower price than their competitors. That is, for everything except their tutoring plans, which are just plain expensive, and do not include any of their recommended study materials. We think that if you are charging $350 per hour, you should at the very least offer a discount to the multi-hundred dollar services you recommend purchasing as part-and-parcel of said tutoring.

Excellent score guarantees

Another plus: Target Test Prep has one of the best score guarantees on our list, with a 15-point guaranteed increase from your baseline across all their plans, or a 320 minimum score guaranteed. While you must establish a baseline score and complete all course materials to be eligible for either guarantee, it is by far the most robust guarantee on our list. To top it off, their $1 5-day trial is an excellent way to asses their materials before spending a significant sum of money

Universally acclaimed

Target Test Prep has universally good reviews both on aggregate review sites and on study boards centered on GRE prep, including the GRE Prep Club, which is exclusively composed of those who are studying for or already took the GRE.

Achievable differentiates itself from competitors through what it calls "adaptive learning”: their proprietary, science based, AI-trained learning schedule. While they primarily market themselves towards the business community, graduate schools, and various financial certification tests such as FINRA, their GRE prep is nothing to sneeze at either, and here is how it compares.

Achievable's GRE prep is going to cost $199 all told. This will get you a year's worth of access to all of the following:

Adaptive learning system

What pulls the whole thing together is the aforementioned "adaptive learning system”. Not only does Achievable track your progress through its materials, but it also surfaces review materials at optimal, science-backed intervals, such that you learn in the most effective way possible. Achievable's tech is a key departure from competitors, as while many offer AI powered test prep that tracks areas in need of improvement, few strategically time content reviews to encourage scientifically-supported rates of retention.

Few customer reviews

Achievable is a relatively new company (as evidenced by the fact that their lead GRE content editor still works as a tutor on the side) and as such there are few user reviews on the product. However, they have earned an "A+” from the Better Business Bureau, and comments on GRE-dedicated study forums are generally positive.

Great tech, little human support

It should be noted that - as a primarily tech-based small company - Achievable does not have any in-person, tutor, or instructor support built into their plans. Additionally, they are slightly more expensive than competitors, who offer more value-added products at the same price point when compared to Achievable (such as admissions counseling). All that being said, we think that their AI-powered approach seems promising to self-paced learners looking for science-based preparatory materials, and strongly recommend Achievable for GRE test prep.

Manhattan Prep

Founded in 2000 as a boutique tutoring service for the Manhattan area, Manhattan Prep was purchased by Kaplan in 2009, and has been offering high-quality online, live-online, and one-on-one tutoring services since. With their main claim-to-fame being their highly qualified tutors and instructors, here's what you'll get with Manhattan Prep.

Pricey on-demand courses

Manhattan Prep's on-demand course is run through the proprietary "interact” system. In essence, the system amounts to a series of interactive video lessons. Your cost will depend on the time you need to prepare, and ranges from the following:

• and $499 for 6 months

These lessons are appended with flashcards and "GRE-like” quizzes. Manhattan Prep's on-demand course also includes 6 GRE practice tests, 77 interactive video lessons, and video explanations for difficult problems.

Video lessons may not be worth the extra $

While potentially high-quality, Manhattan prep's integration of video lessons and quizzes in a proprietary format does not seem to justify their higher price tag when compared to competitors. That being said, we appreciate the fact that they offer free trial classes for curious students.

MBA-focused and tutor-centered GRE prep offered

Manhattan Prep's live-online classes and tutoring services are quite competitive. As of this review, Manhattan Prep was offering a $1,599 MBA focused live-online GRE summer course that included 9 live sessions with a focus on the GRE, in addition to the previously detailed "interact” system, and all of Manhattan Prep's highly-regarded GRE prep books. Manhattan Prep's tutoring services start at $2,450, and include everything in the on-demand plan, in addition to 10 hours of one-on-one tutoring, and a personalized instruction plan built by your tutor.

Highly qualified instructors

Manhattan Prep's competitive edge lies primarily in the high quality of their instructors, with all instructors having scored in the 99th percentile of the GRE, and completing a rigorous selection process in order to be able to tutor: of the 205 candidates who passed Manhattan Prep's first screening, only 11 were hired. As these tutors/instructors are very well compensated (in the range of $100/hour), and with the ability to add to/modify the received Manhattan prep curriculum, you can be assured of being matched with a high-quality, motivated tutor, with both the freedom to lead and modify their curriculum, and the support of a large test prep company.

A difficult-to-use website

We should note here that Manhattan Prep's website is rather poorly designed, and as the navigation bar frequently pops up over whatever it is the viewer is trying to read, it makes the experience of navigating the website a frustrating experience overall. That being said, their poor website does not overshadow their genuinely high-quality tutoring and instructors.

Well-reviewed materials

Manhattan Prep has an "A” with the Better Business Bureau, though they are not BBB accredited. Customer reviews on GRE study forums tend to highly praise both Manhattan Prep's course offerings, and their independently offered subject-focused GRE study books. So if the online course itself is a bit out of budget, it could be well worth your time to investigate their prep book offerings, which cost $32 for their GRE practice problems, $89.99 for their math and verbal strategies set, and $21 for their vocabulary flashcards. While customer reviews trend positive, keep in mind that Manhattan Prep has no refund policy or score guarantee, meaning all purchases are final.

Excellent for classroom and tutoring, average self-led prep

Manhattan Prep's on-demand courses are not a good option for the independent learner, or the GRE student on a budget, as similar services offer a comparable product for significantly less. However, for those willing to pay a bit extra, their tutors are some of the highest quality offered through major test prep corporations. In addition, their independently-sold test preparation books and flashcards can be an excellent fit into any study plan, and are well worth your consideration even if you do not purchase their other online GRE prep plans.

As one of the longest running test prep businesses in the U.S., if you've studied for any kind of admissions or professional test, then you've likely heard of Kaplan. In the field of test prep, however, company size and experience doesn't always equate to quality. So, here's what Kaplan offers for the GRE.

Huge selection of test prep options

Kaplan has a wide selection of high-priced offerings, with GRE courses that range from on-demand to live-online, with tutoring available as well.

• Kaplan's on-demand GRE test prep course priced at $449 includes 6 months of access to 180+ hours of online instruction and practice, 40+ hours of pre-recorded lessons in addition to drop-in live lessons offered 6 days a week, 7 practice exams, a customizable question bank with 2,500 questions, and Kaplan's GRE prep books.
• Kaplan's on-demand plus course costs $699, and includes additional video instruction with their "GRE Math Foundations” and "GRE Advanced Math” lessons.
• Kaplan's live-online course starts at $999, includes everything from the self-led class, in addition to 21 hours of in-class instruction in which one teacher leads class, and multiple assistants answer questions in chat.
• The live-online plus option at $1,299 includes the live-online lessons, an additional three hours of one-on-one tutoring, and the aforementioned "GRE Advanced Math” and "GRE Math Foundations” video lessons.

Proctored tests offered

All of Kaplan's GRE prep offerings come with their "official test-day experience”, in which you can sit for an in-person proctored test mimicking GRE conditions. While certainly not pleasant, such practice could be a deciding factor for those looking for test day practice that simulates the actual conditions of the GRE.

No refund for courses

Keep in mind that Kaplan does not offer any refund policies for their on-demand or live-online course options. However, Kaplan does have a complex schema for their tutoring refunds: if you request a refund within 3 days of purchase, you receive a 100% refund; within 4 to 7 days of purchase, you get a 75% refund; after 8 days or if you have already started tutoring, you can be refunded $75 per tutoring hour remaining (which does not include the cost of the on-demand course purchased as part of their tutoring packages). In short, Kaplan's GRE refund policies are simultaneously overcomplicated and disappointing.

Overall mixed reviews

Kaplan generally receives very good reviews from major review sites, but receives mixed feedback within communities and online discussion boards dedicated to GRE prep: such a split is common for companies with the capital to manage their reputation and surface primarily positive reviews.

A serious contender, but not the best

While certainly not a wallet-friendly option, Kaplan offers something for everyone. And if the structure of a self-led, live-online, or tutored course is what you need to keep you accountable, Kaplan is a reliable (if pricey) standby for GRE test prep. So, while it would be more economical to cobble together more budget-friendly tools and prep, Kaplan offers some integrated plans that might be worth your time to consider.

Prep Scholar is a budget service that cuts some educational support and quantity of materials in order to offer a lower price for GRE test prep. At $38 for a year of access, PrepScholar is one of the lowest-cost services on our list.

Low cost... and surprisingly broad

At that price, you'll get all of the following:

• 150+ hours of study materials
• A diagnostic test that will help customize your study plan
• 2,300 GRE questions
• Two full length GRE practice exams
• A progress-tracker for GRE skills
• 300 question vocab course and math cheat-sheet
• A grad school admissions guide

We suppose you could pay $345 for lifetime access to Prep Scholar's materials, although the prospect of a lifetime's worth of GRE testing sounds more like a punishment than a plus.

Less materials than competitors

Prep Scholar's biggest drawback is that it only provides two GRE practice exams, where other companies' offer more study materials and practice tests. In addition, Prep Scholar does not have any kind of teacher or instructor support, even through email or chat, which helps explain the lower price.

Guarantee caveat

On top of that, the caveat on their 7+ point guarantee is even stricter than other companies: instead of simply having to complete all homework and quizzes, you have to "achieve mastery” in the skills they define. As Prep Scholar is the one defining mastery here, and many customers have complained about the difficulty of meeting their goalposts, we would imagine there is some incentive to set the bar unfairly high.

Frequent (but addressed) customer complaints

When searching for reviews, customers frequently complain that they are charged for their product even after they attempt to cancel the free trial period. They appear to be responsive when customers complain, as evidenced by their participation on the Better Business Bureau website and their subsequent "A” rating. However, it would also appear that structurally customers are auto-charged after the free trial ends, which is certainly not ideal. In addition, Prep Scholar receives poor feedback from users on GRE-dedicated study forums, specifically citing unhelpful verbal assessment material.

Good for a budget, but not the best

If you are on a tight budget, and are choosing between GRE test prep options, then Prep Scholar is definitely a good way to access a wide range of pretty good materials. However, if you are able to afford test prep in the $100-$200 range, you would likely be better served with a more highly-rated service on our list that includes teacher/tutor support, more practice tests, or even more high-tech offerings.

The Princeton Review

The Princeton Review is toe-to-toe with the biggest as far as sheer size of the company: if you've ever googled GRE, or gone to the test prep section of a bookstore, then you've seen The Princeton Review. So without further ado, let's see how this major test prep supplier compares.

Wide range of high-priced plans

The Princeton Review offers a wide variety of GRE study plans to choose from.

• The Princeton Review's self-study GRE 10+ points plan costs $699, and will earn you access to their self-led GRE prep materials. Interestingly, the "GRE 10+ points” plan comes in increments of 30/60/90 days depending on your study schedule, and costs $699 no matter your chosen timeframe. At that price, you'll receive 30 hours of required video lessons, 470 drills, 8 practice tests, live-online math sessions, "adaptive drills” to assist in comprehension, and an interactive score report.
• The GRE Fundamentals plan is a live-online course that includes 24 hours of class time, 180 total hours of instruction (recorded videos), 470 online drills and 3,500 practice questions, 8 "adaptive” practice exams and interactive score reports, and a "higher score guarantee”. Essentially, it amounts to the "GRE 10+ points” class with live instruction and more practice questions.
• The Princeton Review's most premium plan, GRE 162+, costs $2,099 and includes a "162+ or money back” guarantee, 45 hours of live-online instruction, 8 practice tests, and 4,500 practice questions, in addition to The Princeton Review's Quantitative and Verbal test prep manuals.
• Finally, The Princeton Review's GRE 165+ Tutoring costs $159 per hour, and includes a custom tutoring plan, personalized tutor matching, and a 165+ score guarantee.

A very poor website

The Princeton Review's website is terribly designed. It is filled with deceptive nudges (such as framing their highest price plan as their mid-price plan), an overwhelming interface (that makes it hard to see what you are actually buying beneath all the pop-ups and buzzwords), an aggravating countdown timer with a fake, continually-renewed deal that follows you throughout the whole website, and an eye-watering color palette (pink on yellow... ugh). In short, The Princeton Review's website seems designed to be overwhelming, to rush you into a purchase with a series of ever-changing "deals” that aren't really deals, and to generally prevent easy comprehension or comparison of their product. Visiting The Princeton Review's website feels like a street vendor blocking your way and forcing you to buy from them; as such, we generally recommend that you don't.

Mixed customer reviews

The Princeton Review is infamous on GRE-dedicated study boards due to the difficulty of completing every module in order to qualify for the score guarantee (not to mention the fact that you need to establish an official baseline GRE score as well). That being said, The Princeton Review does have good reviews on aggregate review sites, but often large companies have the capital to manage their reputation on such sites. In any case, even as The Princeton Review's Score guarantee seems competitive, it will come back to bite you if you do not complete the (somewhat arbitrary) verifications they set.

Average materials, high price, an aggravating experience

There's no question that The Princeton Review has a large quantity of materials in each of their plans. But with their generally high prices, their horrendous user interface, and their poor reputation, we think that you'll generally be better off with their competitors on our list - who offer similar live-online and self-led classes with more robust materials at cheaper prices. That being said, in spite of their many annoyances, The Princeton Review's GRE prep materials are still worth your consideration if you are comparing strictly among companies providing live-online classes.

Varsity Tutors

Specializing primarily in tutoring of all stripes, Varsity Tutors offers self-led and live-online classes specifically for their GRE materials. So, with their expertise primarily in tutoring, how do Varsity Tutors' general offerings compare?

Mid-price tutoring and classes offered

While Varsity Tutors is first and foremost a tutoring program, they offer a range of self-led and live-online study materials/classes.

• Varsity Tutors' GRE on demand course costs $149 for 1 year of access, and includes practice tests, study plans and timelines, 90+ 30-minute instructional videos on test strategies, 6,000 practice questions of varying difficulty, a 500+ page GRE study book, and an integrated mobile app.
• Varsity Tutors' GRE on demand + plan adds 6 hours of 1-on-1 tutoring to the self-led package and costs $649.
• Varsity Tutors' live-online class advertises its class sizes of 6-9, offers 20 hours of class time, and includes all of the "GRE on demand” materials.

While Varsity Tutors also offers tutoring, they gate their tutoring prices behind a "consultation” with a sales rep; even so, you can expect to pay between $50-$100 dollars per hour for a tutor here.

Small class sizes offered

One definite plus of Varsity Tutors is that they are the only company on our list to specifically advertise small class sizes. So, if you are worried about being drowned out in a large, mostly anonymous online class, then Varsity Tutors' live-online classes are well worth your consideration.

Good customer reviews, mixed employee reviews

Customer reviews of Varsity Tutors trend positive; however, they are often skewed, as they range from K-12 to undergrad tutoring, and are not explicitly focused on their GRE products. Additionally, employee reviews of Varsity Tutors tend to be mixed, and employees complain of low pay compared to their charged rates: for example, a tutor may expect to earn $15-$20 per hour, even as Varsity Tutors charges $50-$100 for their services.

Good for small class sizes, but overall outclassed

If you like the idea of small class sizes and personalized attention (but don't want to pay for a personal tutor) then Varsity Tutors' live-online class could be an excellent choice. However, we do not appreciate the fact that Varsity Tutors hides their pricing behind a phone call with a sales-rep, and we find that other self-led test-prep courses offer more robust materials for a similar price. As such, while Varsity Tutors may be an option for some GRE test-takers, we do not necessarily recommend them as a good choice for most.

As an offshoot of the larger Testmax company, GREmax specializes in providing GRE-focused tutors in bundled packages. They offer little information as to the qualifications of the tutors themselves or as to the curriculum they teach. So, that being said, here's what they offer in full.

Bundled hours for better rates

GREmax essentially offers better tutoring rates if you purchase their hours in advance at 10 for $1,600, 20 for $3,000, and 30 for $4,000. Essentially, you are paying $160 per hour for the base plan, and $133.33 for the premium plan. GREmax does provide the credentials of the tutors in their employ; however, they do not detail any elements of their curriculum which set them apart from their competitors, aside from the app integration.

Little information provided

The dearth of information provided by GREmax about their services is a dealbreaker for us; if you, as a company, are aggregating tutors and charging premium prices for their services, we expect - as a bare minimum - to know the value added by engaging with tutoring through your company as opposed to booking a tutor independently. While GREmax does provide a six-minute sample excerpt from one of their tutoring sessions as an example of their product, we do not think this is necessarily representative of what they offer.

Poor behavior from affiliates

The company providing GREmax has earned lots of bad blood with their LSAT prep services - LSATmax - in which they posted fake customer reviews and divulged customer emails to an online forum. Their GREmax services seem not to engage in the same practices, and it seems that its management is unaffiliated with their LSAT product. Still, GREmax has almost no customer reviews, and are generally not discussed on GRE-dedicated study forums. In short, few seem to have spoken about their experience with GREmax, though the company itself has been known to behave badly.

App integrated... but that's about it

While we appreciate app-integrated tutoring, GREmax is doing their tutors a disservice with the limited amount of information they give to their customers. As such, while their tutors seem intelligent and well-qualified, we cannot recommend GREmax over other GRE test prep competitors.

Peterson's

Peterson's primary market is the military, as they have a series of contracts with the U.S. Government to provide test prep to service members. Military contracts seem to have done little for the quality of their product; even as Peterson's offers some of the cheapest test prep, it is also all-around unremarkable. Here's what Peterson's has to offer.

Simple offerings, a good sum of tests.

Peterson's offerings are simple, and include 8 full-length GRE practice tests, study guides integrated into said practice tests, an undisclosed number of flashcards, and complete answer explanations. Their pricing reflects the amount of time that these materials are available to you. Peterson's charges the following:

• $49 for one month of access to the aforementioned materials
• $45 per month for 3 months plus 90 minutes of tutoring and essay review
• and finally $39 per month for 6 months of access plus 270 minutes of tutoring and essay review

Peterson's plans end up totalling $49, $135, and $234 respectively. While generally unremarkable, we appreciate that Peterson's offers 8 full length practice tests: a significant amount.

Poor value for the price

In regards to Peterson's offerings, they just aren't very impressive; at their higher end, the price ends up being comparable to more highly-rated companies on our list, even as the quality is not. And while Peterson's does include small amounts of tutoring in their more expensive plans, they do not list the credentials of their tutors, which is slightly off-putting.

No refunds and exploitative auto-renewal

Peterson's does not offer any refund policy, and plans with Peterson's auto-renew unless you cancel them. On top of that, Peterson's terms of service state that you have to cancel your subscription 48 hours before it is up or you will be auto-billed for another one, three, or six months. As their policies state that they explicitly do not refund any unused months, their policies seem designed to trap unwary test-prep takers into accidentally overpaying for their subpar service.

Few reviews

As most of its customer base is likely military who receive the product for free, Peterson's GRE prep has few reviews. Even so, Peterson's has earned a "D-” from the Better Business Bureau, so those who do review Peterson's often do not have great things to say.

Not recommended (unless it's already free)

Unless you are accessing Peterson's through the U.S. military portal/contracts and are receiving the service for free, there is no reason to use Peterson's for your GRE test prep. Unless you're looking to be surprised with an automatically-renewing subscription that can't be refunded, we recommend you browse some of the more highly-rated GRE prep services on our list.
