Whether it's those stray chin hairs that have ladies running for their tweezers, or the hairy back that no gentleman wants to show off at the beach, men and women alike struggle to find the perfect hair removal method.
Excessive hair can leave you feeling awkward and embarrassed, both in personal and professional settings. Many people have resigned themselves to time-consuming or painful processes to remove this unwanted hair. But what are your options to get rid of that hair that's just not welcome?

For every imaginable hair removal need, the Philips Satinelle Advanced Wet/Dry Epilator can handle it all. There's no need to choose between shaving or epilation, or between using it in the shower vs. using it by the bathroom mirror - because it does all of that and more.
Check out some of the features that make the Satinelle Advanced so popular:
The epilation feature is probably the most widely used. The Philips Satinelle uses micro-ridged ceramic discs with a wide (30mm) epilation head to get as much hair as possible in a single pass over the skin, and can even gently remove hairs as short as a half-millimeter - too short to be removed by waxing!
The manufacturer recommends that you start by exfoliating; this can help prevent ingrown hairs and skin irritation, but you may also want to use the device in the evening to allow time for any irritation to subside by morning.
If you should need to return your epilator, you'll have 15 days from the date of delivery. Philips covers their hair removal device with a 2-year warranty for both parts and labor: one of the best warranties on the market.
Customers rave about this method of hair removal. One person said that she couldn't believe how comfortable the process is, especially when compared with a Brazilian wax. Other users said that the shaver/epilator works much better than the competition, especially on shorter hairs and harder-to-reach areas. The Philips Satinelle is known for being very quiet and for lasting a long time.
Best of all, you'll pay less than $60 for this hair removal device. Compare that with the cost of two years worth of razors or depilatory cream and you'll quickly realize that this is va bargain for the money.
The Philips Satinelle Advanced Wet/Dry Epilator gives you the absolute best value on the market. It's effective, affordable, and versatile, and easily ranks first among all of the hair removal products in our review.
Braun has long been a trusted name in grooming products, and their Silk-epil 9 Epilator is a fantastic part of their brand. The device works as both an epilator, removing hair at the root, as well as a more traditional shaver. With just one hour of charge, it can be used cordlessly for up to 40 minutes at a time, wet or dry, allowing for convenient use in the shower, at the sink, or anywhere you prefer.
You'll love all of the features of the Silk-epil 9. With attachments for the face, including a cleansing brush for greater exfoliation; a light to make sure you spot every last hair; a pivoting head that adapts to body contours; and, even a massage cap to soothe the skin.
If you need to return the epilator, you'll have 15 days from delivery. Braun backs the product with a 1-year parts and labor warranty.
Customers say that, like most epilators, using the Silk-epil 9 can be painful at first, especially if you're working on an area that is sensitive. On the bright side, many users describe legs and faces that stay smooth for much longer than shaving, and that the hair that does grow back is often finer and easier to remove the next time they use the device.
This hair removal device can be used by men and women - although some men may find the white-and-violet color combination less manly than they'd prefer. But, since most people use an epilator in the privacy of their own homes, that probably shouldn't make a huge difference if it delivers long-lasting hair-free skin, right?
If you're looking for an affordable, effective hair removal system that comes with a great set of accessories, the Braun Silk-epil 9 Epilator should be on your list of products to consider.
Why spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for electrolysis or laser hair removal when you can get the same results at home for much less money? The Sharper Image LED Home Electrolysis Kit offers just that. Cordless, portable, and effective, this hair removal system lets you target unwanted hair from your eyebrows to your ankles using the same technology you'd get from a professional.
How does it work? The device uses a rollerball wand with a galvanic current to target cells at the hair follicles' base. After consistent use, the current damages the follicle so that hair can't grow from it. Most of the customer reviews we found say that this LED Home Electrolysis Kit works very well, especially after regular use: hair eventually stops growing back, forever.
Because it takes time for this process to work, you should plan on needing some other kind of hair removal method for a while. Many users continue to shave, pluck, or wax while they wait for the under-the-surface process to work. The electrolysis itself is painless, making it a good choice for people with sensitive skin.
Electrolysis also requires the use of conductive gel; Sharper Image includes 3 oz. of gel along with 3 oz. of pre-epilation cleanser, but you may need to buy more as you continue to use the device. It operates on two AAA batteries, which are also included with your purchase. For dealing with larger areas like the legs, you'll need to use the self-adhesive gel pads that come with your purchase; we didn't find any information on replacements for those, or whether or not you can reuse them. This electrolysis device seems to be intended more for smaller areas like the face.
While Sharper Image's policy doesn't allow for returns on used/opened Personal Care products, the retailer has an excellent reputation for customer satisfaction. So, if you try the Home Electrolysis Kit and it just doesn't work for you, we recommend that you contact Sharper Image and see if they can help. Otherwise, you can return this product in unused, unopened condition within 60 days of purchase. No warranty information was provided on the Sharper Image site.
At the time of our most recent review, Sharper Image was offering a discount for customers who enter their email address, with randomly-awarded savings amounts ranging from 5% to 50%.
Sharper Image's LED Home Electrolysis Kit is a good option if you're looking for a hair removal system that leads to permanent results. Just remember that you'll have to be patient and use another hair removal method like tweezing or waxing while you wait for those results.
If you're looking for permanent hair removal, consider the Silk'n Flash & Go Infinity. It uses a proprietary system called eHPL, or flashes of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) combined with galvanic energy. This opens the pores and stunts hair growth at the follicle.
Unlike many devices that use IPL, the Silk'n Flash & Go Infinity is suitable for all skin tones and types. Why? This product has a sensor that detects darker skin tones and activates a lower-intensity light for them. This also means that it can be used on areas of the body that naturally have darker skin, such as the nipples or lips.
According to the manufacturer, the lamp used in the Infinity model should last for up to 200 full-body scans - or approximately 15 years of use. A typical process goes something like this:
One caveat: as the name suggests, the Flash & Go uses flashes of light on the skin. Described as having a similar brightness to a camera flash or a strobe light, this can be uncomfortable for some users, especially those who suffer from migraines. The manufacturer suggests wearing sunglasses or looking away if you are bothered by flashing lights.
When you purchase your Flash & Go Infinity from Amazon you'll get a 30-day return policy. Silk'n is owned by Home Skinovations, an "A+" rated, accredited company with the Better Business Bureau.
The only drawback to the Infinity is the price. With a standard retail price of $399, it may be out of range for shoppers on a budget.
Otherwise, the Silk'n Flash & Go Infinity is a solid option among hair removal products: effective, less painful than waxing and longer-lasting than shaving, and backed by a company with an excellent reputation.
The Remington iLight Pro Hair Removal System is one of several devices in our review that uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to slow and reduce the growth of hair over time. This product works in ways that are similar to the lasers you might find at a spa or salon.
If you're not already familiar with IPL, it's important to note that it is typically not effective for people with darker skin tones. Why? An IPL device actually uses light energy to heat the hair follicle, and the extra melanin in darker skin can heat up to the point of causing pain and damage. Not good! On the flipside, very light hair may not be affected by IPL, because there is too little melanin to heat up and disable the hair root. Yes, using an IPL device can be a little bit like the Goldilocks story: your hair and skin need to be not too dark and not too light for it to work just right.
So, if you're a good candidate for IPL, is the Remington iLight Pro worth considering? Absolutely. Not only is the device FDA cleared and clinically proven, but it delivers up to 94% hair reduction after just three uses. Within 7-10 days of your first time, you should see hair falling out. Users say that it can sting when you use it, which surprises some people who think that pulses of light should be painless.
The device comes with three extra light cartridges, giving you a total of 8-12 full-body scans. Replacement cartridges are affordably priced at around $15.
Remington provides a fantastic 90-day warranty - so if you don't see results within the first month or two (or three), you can get a full refund.
Because IPL systems only work for a small percentage of people, the Remington iLight isn't our highest-ranked hair removal product. But, for those with lighter skin tones and darker hair, who want permanent results, this device is an excellent choice.
If you already have an epilation method that you love and you just want to reduce the amount of unwanted hair that grows back, consider using Kalo Post Epilating Spray. While it won't get rid of any hair that you already have, it works extremely well when paired with an epilator - either one that you already have, another epilation system in our review, or one of the two (Emjoi Epilator or GiGi Waxing Product) sold by the same company that offers the spray.
Here's how this hair inhibitor works: apply the spray three times on the day of and the day after waxing or using some other hair removal method (epilation is preferred; the product works less effectively after shaving). Each time the Kalo Post Epilating Spray is used, it reduces returning hair growth by about 10%, with noticeable results after 2-3 rounds. You should expect it to take anywhere from 10 to 15 sessions to see no regrowth of hair.
Many users say that consistent use of the Kalo spray after epilation has left their skin consistently smooth - no further hair removal needed, even on areas with tougher hair like the beard or legs.
If you try the Kalo spray and it doesn't give you the reduction in regrowth that you were hoping for, you can return one bottle for a full refund. Nisim, the company that sells the product, has an excellent "A+" reputation with the Better Business Bureau, so you can rest assured that they'll honor that satisfaction guarantee.
This product isn't cheap: $62 for a single bottle, with discounts as you buy more bottles in a single order. But, keep in mind that the refund policy only applies to one bottle, so you'd want to make sure it works for you before placing a larger order. Given that the Kalo spray doesn't actually remove hair, that could feel pretty spendy when you still have to shave, wax, or use an epilator.
For these reasons, Kalo Post Epilating Spray earns a middle-of-the-road 3-star rating: according to customer reviews, it delivers what it promises, but for people looking for smooth skin right away, they'll still have to buy another product first.
Ultra Hair Away is one of several products in our review that works to slow down hair regrowth by targeting the follicle. In other words, you would use this spray along with another method of hair removal - waxing or epilation work better than shaving - so that unwanted hair grows back more slowly over time, eventually leading to permanent results.
One bottle should last you at least a month, maybe longer. Naturally, this depends on how often you use it and how large the area is (for example, face vs. legs). Spray Ultra Hair Away on the desired area immediately after you've removed the hair. The liquid is fragrance-free, but some people say that it feels a little sticky after applying.
Does it work? That depends. If you follow the instructions exactly - especially when it comes to using a hair removal method that takes out the whole hair, not just shaving - you'll probably see a noticeable difference in the hair that grows back. It will be lighter, finer, and easier to remove. We found mixed reviews about Ultra Hair Away's effectiveness, but it was hard to determine if the customers used the product as directed.
The makers of Ultra Hair Away want you to see results - or they'll give you your money back. You have 60 days (plus 7 for return shipping) to try the product. If it doesn't work the way you hoped, you can return it for a full refund. Leading Edge, the retailer that distributes Ultra Hair Away, has an "A+" rating with the BBB, so you shouldn't have a problem getting a refund if needed.
You won't see immediate results with Ultra Hair Away, so if you need baby-smooth skin right away, this isn't the product for you. On the other hand, if you want to shave, wax, or tweeze less often over time, you may want to give this spray a try.
The Silk'n Flash & Go Jewel has been on the market for years as a hair removal device that works with Home Pulsed Light (HPL) technology. This approach targets the pigment in hair shafts to disable future hair growth while still being gentle to the skin.
You'll need to start with clean, shaved, dry skin before using the Jewel. The device is then held firmly on the desired area of the skin, gliding to the next target area. It emits a continuous pulse of energy, so there's no button to press.
Because the hair growth cycle can take 18-24 months, you should expect to do six to eight times for the best results. The first four times should be done two weeks apart, and applications five through seven should be done every four weeks. By the time you get to the eighth time, your hair removal process should just be done as needed for maintenance.
Silk'n backs the Flash & Go Jewel with a 2-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee. The company has a good reputation, with an "A+" and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau.
Most users who follow the instructions for using the Flash & Go Jewel are happy with the results. We found lots of happy customers who said that their unwanted hair now grows in much lighter and finer, if at all.
Ultimately, however, the Jewel is less effective than its sister Silk'n product, the Infinity. Although the Jewel does have adjustable energy levels, it still isn't effective on darker skin tones and hair colors. The manufacturer states explicitly, "Individuals with blonde, gray, or white hair lack pigment in their hair and are not good candidates." The Jewel also doesn't use galvanic energy to open the pores, so thick hairs can be harder to remove. Of course, the more advanced Infinity hair removal device also comes with a higher price tag.
The Silk'n Flash & Go Jewel is a reliable, proven device for hair removal and because of the company's refund/return policy, it's almost risk-free to give it a try. But, with more advanced products on the market, you'll have to decide if the Jewel is worth the investment.
Stop Grow will not leave you with silky-smooth legs, armpits, or any other part of your body - at least, not for a long time. Why? The product is a hair growth inhibitor and doesn't instantly remove hair like shaving, tweezing, or using a chemical depilatory.
Stop Grow uses three proprietary ingredients: Decelerine, Telocapil, and Pilisoft. We encourage you to take a look at the before-and-after photos, along with the clinical study results, to see how the three components work together to decrease hair regrowth over time.
According to the manufacturer, Stop Grow works to slow down the regrowth of hair, interrupting follicular cell activity and leading to a long-term lessening of unwanted hair anywhere on the body - including sensitive areas.
The question is, do you have the patience to apply the product daily for at least 4 weeks? That's how long it takes most people to see a noticeable reduction of the hair in the targeted area. We also didn't see much information on the Stop Grow website about how to use the product. Is it once per day? Twice? Before or after shaving?
We like that Stop Grow comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee. The fine print states that you'll need to buy at least 3 tubes, so that you can try it for the full 90 days. Return any unused tubes, along with the 3 used ones, within 97 days from the date you received them, and the company will give you a full refund. Because the retailer of Stop Grow, Leading Edge, has an "A+" rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, we're confident that they stand behind their satisfaction guarantee.
Oddly enough, the Stop Grow product for men had conflicting information about the guarantee timeframe. On the main page, it said the refund policy was 67 days (60 days to try the product and 7 days to return it), but the full guarantee still said 97.
So, while Stop Grow has a seemingly great return policy that's backed by a reputable manufacturer, there's just not enough information about the product for most people to feel excited to try it. In the future, we hope to see more details about the ingredients and usage, and more consistency when it comes to the exact terms of that satisfaction guarantee.
Lucent Skin by Revitol is a hair removal cream that both dissolves existing unwanted hair while also reducing the hair shaft at the follicle growth site. For many users, this means that the hair that grows back becomes thinner and finer over the course of 1-4 months, with many people reporting that the hair stops growing altogether with ongoing applications of the product.
The active ingredient in Lucent Skin is Calcium Thioglycolate, the most commonly-used ingredient in chemical depilatories. Additional ingredients include green tea and hydrolyzed milk protein, so we encourage you to read the ingredients carefully if you have any allergies or known sensitivities.
Lucent Skin is applied directly to the skin and must be left on for 12-15 minutes before being wiped off with a towel and rinsed off. The manufacturer recommends that you test sensitive areas such as the face, underarms, and neck minute by minute, to make sure you're not having a bad reaction.
Buying multiple tubes of Lucent Skin can save you money. While a 1-month supply costs $39.95, their buy-2-get-1 offer brings the per-product cost down to $26.63 each. Alternately, you can buy 3 and get 2 free, with a cost of just $23.97 per tube. It also saves you the $6.95 in shipping you'll pay if you only order one tube at a time.
At first, we were impressed with Lucent Skin's 90-day money-back guarantee - until we read the fine print that says it's only valid for returns on products that are unopened/unused. Yes, you understood that correctly: you could spend almost $40 on a product that may not work for you and be completely out of luck. Compared with the more generous return policies offered by other hair removal product retailers, this puts Lucent Skin near the bottom of our rankings.
Plus, the toll-free number given on the Lucent Skin site seems to be the customer service line for a long list of other non-related products. Digging a little deeper, we found that those products tend to have bad reviews and their websites come up with very low ratings with the BBB. This definitely doesn't inspire much confidence that the makers of Lucent Skin will stand by their hair removal cream.
With so many hair removal products on the market that are backed by reputable companies and that come with much more reassuring refund policies, it's hard to see why anyone would choose Lucent Skin. We strongly suggest that you buy one of the higher-ranked hair removal products in our review.
The Verseo ePen is a home-use electrolysis system that promises permanent hair removal. According to the manufacturer, the device transmits an electrical current to the base of each hair follicle and making it so that the hair doesn't grow back. The removal system comes with an assortment of patches, leads, and conductive gel, and requires two AA batteries to operate.
We definitely would have appreciated a how-to video - because looking at the removal wand and accessories left us wondering how exactly it works. The ePen's description wasn't much more helpful. There were only 21 reviews of the device on the product site, and most of those were at least five years old.
The news doesn't get any better. Verseo has a terrible reputation as a business, including an "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau. Customers say that the company doesn't process refunds accurately - if at all - and that it can be extremely difficult to get a response from the customer service department. Most of the customers trying to get refunds describe products that promise a lot but fail to deliver, with many items not working from the first day of use.
You can spot a lack of attention to detail throughout the site, too. We found oddly-worded phrases like "99% Customer Feedbacks", and even though the Verseo ePen's description said that extra conductive gel and pads could be purchased on the site, there was no link to it with the electrolysis device.
There's just no good reason to buy the Verseo ePen when there are so many effective hair removal products on the market that are sold by trustworthy retailers.
In general, there are three main approaches to hair removal.
Shaving. The advantages to shaving are that razors are inexpensive and easy to find, shaving usually takes less time than other means of removing hair, and no electricity is needed. Disadvantages are that hair grows back quickly (think "5 o'clock shadow"). Cuts can be painful and leave scars. Razor blades dull after several uses and have to be replaced.
Chemical Depilation. Advantages to chemical depilation include smoother skin than shaving, no risk of cuts, affordable, hair takes longer to grow back. Disadvantages include the chemicals used to dissolve the hair can cause an allergic reaction or irritation. Chemical depilatories often have an unpleasant smell and often need to be left on the skin for up to 10 minutes. Takes longer than ordinary shaving.
Epilation. This process removes the entire hair, including the part below the surface of the skin). Advantages of epilation include smooth skin that lasts for much longer than shaving or chemical depilation - and may even be permanent. It also may be painless, depending on the method used. Disadvantages are that it can be painful if plucking or threading. If using a device, electricity or batteries are needed. It can also be much more expensive and time-consuming than other methods.
Given that there are many products on the market that promise to deliver smooth, hair-free skin, how can you decide which one to try first? Here are some factors to consider as you choose the hair removal strategy that's right for you:
