The Verseo ePen is a home-use electrolysis system that promises permanent hair removal. According to the manufacturer, the device transmits an electrical current to the base of each hair follicle and making it so that the hair doesn't grow back. The removal system comes with an assortment of patches, leads, and conductive gel, and requires two AA batteries to operate.
We definitely would have appreciated a how-to video - because looking at the removal wand and accessories left us wondering how exactly it works. The ePen's description wasn't much more helpful. There were only 21 reviews of the device on the product site, and most of those were at least five years old.
The news doesn't get any better. Verseo has a terrible reputation as a business, including an "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau. Customers say that the company doesn't process refunds accurately - if at all - and that it can be extremely difficult to get a response from the customer service department. Most of the customers trying to get refunds describe products that promise a lot but fail to deliver, with many items not working from the first day of use.
You can spot a lack of attention to detail throughout the site, too. We found oddly-worded phrases like "99% Customer Feedbacks", and even though the Verseo ePen's description said that extra conductive gel and pads could be purchased on the site, there was no link to it with the electrolysis device.
There's just no good reason to buy the Verseo ePen when there are so many effective hair removal products on the market that are sold by trustworthy retailers.
Whether it's those stray chin hairs that have ladies running for their tweezers, or the hairy back that no gentleman wants to show off at the beach, men and women alike struggle to find the perfect hair removal method.
Excessive hair can leave you feeling awkward and embarrassed, both in personal and professional settings. Many people have resigned themselves to time-consuming or painful processes to remove this unwanted hair. But what are your options to get rid of that hair that's just not welcome?
In general, there are three main approaches to hair removal.
Shaving. The advantages to shaving are that razors are inexpensive and easy to find, shaving usually takes less time than other means of removing hair, and no electricity is needed. Disadvantages are that hair grows back quickly (think "5 o'clock shadow"). Cuts can be painful and leave scars. Razor blades dull after several uses and have to be replaced.
Chemical Depilation. Advantages to chemical depilation include smoother skin than shaving, no risk of cuts, affordable, hair takes longer to grow back. Disadvantages include the chemicals used to dissolve the hair can cause an allergic reaction or irritation. Chemical depilatories often have an unpleasant smell and often need to be left on the skin for up to 10 minutes. Takes longer than ordinary shaving.
Epilation. This process removes the entire hair, including the part below the surface of the skin). Advantages of epilation include smooth skin that lasts for much longer than shaving or chemical depilation - and may even be permanent. It also may be painless, depending on the method used. Disadvantages are that it can be painful if plucking or threading. If using a device, electricity or batteries are needed. It can also be much more expensive and time-consuming than other methods.
Given that there are many products on the market that promise to deliver smooth, hair-free skin, how can you decide which one to try first? Here are some factors to consider as you choose the hair removal strategy that's right for you:
