italki was launched in 2007 and is headquartered in Hong Kong. Students from all over the world come here to learn a host of languages like Japanese, Spanish, French, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, and many others. It is a global online language platform that connects students to teachers through video chat. Students can set their own schedules and work as frequently as they would like with a one-on-one tutor. italki has been featured by BBC, Business Insider, The Economist, TechCrunch, The New York Times, and The Huffington Post.
Expert freelance teachers
If you're someone who learns better and is more accountable when you work directly with someone else, italki may be a great option for you. Teachers are language expert freelancers who earn money by working with students. These teachers must have a solid background in the language (many are native speakers), teaching certificates (for those designated as "professional” and not just "community tutor”), be personable, pass an interview, and adhere to the teaching code of conduct. This includes being culturally sensitive, being professional and empathetic, and attending all classes on time.
Efficiently proficient
italki boasts that it takes just 19 hours working with a group or teacher on their site to reach language proficiency equivalent to a college semester of language study, whereas their competitor Duolingo takes 35 hours, Rosetta Stone takes 55 hours, and an actual college semester, which is 48 hours.
Choose your teacher
As a student, you get to choose your Hindi teacher at italki. There are hundreds of teachers available and all of them are very highly rated by past students. To decide who you'd fit best with, click on their profile and read all about them. You'll see their name and photo, proficiency level in the language, an "About Me” section, a list of their supplementary materials (like vocabulary cards or quizzes), their overall rating, how many students they've worked with, how many lessons they've taught, how high their attendance is, availability, written reviews, and the cost to book either a trial or regular class.
Book lessons on your own schedule
Not all teachers offer trial classes, but most do. Trial classes aren't free, but they're usually about $5 each. During the trial class, you'll get to know your teacher's personality and teaching style, discuss your reasoning for wanting to learn Hindi, talk about goals, and discuss how and when lessons will happen going forward. If you decide to move forward with the teacher, you can view their schedule and press "book a lesson” to get started. Lessons can be canceled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the lesson start time.
30-90 minute lessons
Most teachers offer either 30, 45, 60, or 90-minute lessons. Teachers determine their own pricing, but we found that some high-level teachers offered 30-minute lessons for $6, 45-minute lessons for $8, 60-minute lessons for $10, and 90-minute lessons for $16. When choosing a teacher, you'll also want to see what their lesson plan is. Some have a series of lessons that focus on speaking and listening, some on basic vocabulary, some on reading and grammar, and some on introductory conversation. Most teachers outline what they go over and about how long it takes to master their lessons so you know what to expect as far as a time commitment.
Learn through different communication platforms
Students can meet with teachers via Skype, Google Hangouts, Facetime, Wechat, Zoom, and QQ. Teachers will list their preferred communication tools that you can refer to before booking a lesson.
Satisfaction guarantee
It's up to you to choose a teacher that's a good match for you. However, italki realizes that it may take a little trial and error to get there. They offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee where you can have up to two times credit refund on your trial lesson if the teacher doesn't show up or the teacher did not meet your expectations for the class. This way you don't feel like you've wasted money on trial classes and can hopefully choose someone who you will easily learn from.
Group courses, but not in Hindi
Another way you can take advantage of the learning opportunities at italki is through their group classes. Unfortunately, none of them are offered for Hindi at this time, but if you're interested in other languages, it's something to check out. There are group classes about books, business growth, making small talk, food passions, business idioms, and so many other topics. Most classes meet 3- 6 times and are around $90 each.

If you ever took a French, Spanish, or other second-language class in high school, you know how difficult it can be to learn in a fast-paced group environment where it's easy to fall behind. Many people walk away from these classes without the knowledge sticking long-term and feeling discouraged about how hard it is.
This is where new, robust online platforms come into the picture. Taking a Hindi class online lets you progress at your own pace, utilize multiple forms of methods that fit your learning style (one-on-one tutoring, flashcards, practice quizzes, conjugation charts, practice dialogues, and more), refer back to previous lessons and notes, and practice your skills right away.
If you already have a basic understanding of Hindi, you can shape your online learning experience to build on this and take you to the next level. If the only thing you know about Hindi is that it's the most common language spoken in India, you can start from scratch and work your way up to fluency. There are amazing programs out there that are built for everyone and they couldn't be easier or more convenient to use.
There are over 336 million people across the world who speak Hindi, making it the third most commonly spoken language. In a time of global connection and communication, it's an exciting time to take your learning skills to the next level and start incorporating second (or third or fourth) languages into your toolkit. If you're looking to travel, build a business, become a more valuable employee, or connect better with your colleagues, neighbors, and friends, learning Hindi would be an incredible skill.
The biggest perk of learning a language online is that you can do it your own way. Some platforms let you choose a topic you want to learn about to make it more interesting and get you started that way. For example, if you're connecting with colleagues in India and need to be able to converse about business topics, you could start there.
If you're traveling and need to be able to ask for a bathroom location or restaurant recommendation, you could focus your study there. Or, if you want the basic building blocks of language learning laid out for you and to have the program lead you through progressive lessons that broadly cover all topics, there are options for that too. When you find a program to fit your learning style, it will make learning Hindi so much easier and more thrilling.
There are major opportunities for those who know this important language, so now is the time to start. When deciding where to take Hindi lessons online, take the following things into consideration:
