The Best Home Safe Stores

Where is the Best Place to Buy a Home Safe?

There are quite a few reasons you might want to consider purchasing a safe for your home. We all have important documents like birth certificates, passports, deeds to our home, tax information, marriage certificates, social security cards, and more. So where do you store them? These are things you want easy access to, but don't want anyone else to get their hands on. Keeping them in a safe is a way to stay organized and ensure your privacy is protected in case of theft.

Aside from the risk of someone entering your home or rummaging through your things and stealing documents you don't want to lose, safes often can protect against natural disasters. Many home safes are fire-resistant and could preserve your valuables if the rest of your home were to burn down or be damaged by smoke. They can also protect against flooding, earthquakes, or other unexpected events that put your belongings at risk.

Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award

Gun Safes boasts that they are widely recognized for offering best-in-class security products to their customers. Their inventory consists of biometric safes, wall safes, vehicle safes, truck vaults, waterproof and fireproof safes, tactical safes, and more. Although many of their products are designed for firearm protection, they could easily be used for protecting any type of valuables. Some of the top brands they sell include Browning, Liberty, Rhino/Kodiak, American Security, and more.

No messin' around

Gun Safes has a straightforward website without the frills. You can easily browse all their safes, read the important details about them, see pricing, get an estimated ship date, read through their company policies, and everything else without trying too hard. We get the feeling that this company doesn't mess around and they are just here to provide customers with high-quality products and a smooth experience, and then call it a day.

Impressive collection

We're impressed that Gun Safes has 348 choices for customers in their home safes collection. This includes a smorgasbord of safes from all different categories that could work effectively in your own spaces. Some are small, steel safes with electronic locks that could easily fit on a closet shelf or under your bed, while others are quite large and could take up an entire corner of a room. Since there are so many options, it's nice that Gun Safes lets you filter their inventory by brand, height, width, depth, fire protection, waterproofing, lock type, long gun capacity, handgun capacity, TL rating, and special features.

Best Home Safe Stores

Wide price range

Customers can leave unfiltered reviews on Gun Safes' products, but we only found one home safe that had a rating. You can also sort all of the safes by prices ranging from low to high to get an idea of how simple or grandiose of a safe you can find. Their least expensive safe is a small cash box for $39.99 with a combination lock. You can get a small, steel safe that could fit some jewelry, documents, cash, and other small items for around $150 - $300. The most expensive safe sold by Gun Safes (and the only one with a review) costs a whopping $17,073. It has a massive 6' door and 3' body, six-sided burglary protection, and 120-minute fire protection. They really have something for everyone here in all sizes and with all types of features.

Check shipping windows

Pay close attention to the shipping timeframes listed on the individual safes. Some of them say they ship in about 50 business days, while ones listed as "Quick Ship” and in-stock usually ship within 1-2 weeks. This is a pretty big range, so just be aware of how long it might take for your safe to arrive once you order it. All orders over $150 ship free, so most safes here will qualify for that.

30-day returns with restocking fees

Gun Safes says that customer satisfaction is their highest priority. So if you're not satisfied with your purchase, you have 30 days to return it. You'll need to notify a customer service representative to receive a return authorization number. As long as the item is in its original condition and packaging, you'll receive a refund, minus a 15% restocking fee and whatever it costs for you to ship it. We are never excited to see that companies charge restocking fees, but with big, heavy items, it sometimes makes sense.

Best Home Safe Stores

Positive testimonials

The Better Business Bureau gives Gun Safes an "A+” rating. As we mentioned, there aren't many customer reviews straight on their website, but they do have a testimonials page. Of course, these testimonials are published by the company, so they aren't exactly unfiltered, but we believe that there are a lot of people who have been really happy with their purchases here.

A solid choice

Gun Safes is a practical place to buy a home safe that will fit any of your needs, big or small. We're confident that you'll find something in your price range, the size you need, and with the features you're looking for to check all your boxes. You'll likely get free shipping on your order and if you run into any questions, you can talk to one of their employees over the phone without any trouble. Gun Safes is a trustworthy place to shop online, and they've earned our highest rating.

Wayfair Review 4.5 Star Rating

Wayfair

4.5 Star Rating
  • Over 960 choices
  • Free shipping over $35
  • 30-day return policy
  • Unfiltered customer reviews
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Wayfair is an American e-commerce company based out of Boston, Massachusetts. They were founded in 2002 and grew like wildfire in popularity. Wayfair has an unparalleled selection of products for your home, including categories like bedding, lighting, rugs, organization, kitchen, appliances, home improvement, holiday, pet, outdoor, and furniture. Anything to accessorize your home or make your spaces more fun should be looked for at Wayfair. They have excitingly low prices and we're often blown away by how many choices we have when we do a simple search for an item.

Huge selection

We expected to find a good selection of home safes at Wayfair, but 967? We're impressed. Luckily, Wayfair is expert in offering overwhelming amounts of products to their customers, so their website makes it really easy to sort through their inventory. If you know what features you want in a safe, the size, lock type, or design, you'll be able to filter through all the results on Wayfair to simplify your choices.

A full range of home safes

Wayfair has the simplest safes, like a small magnetic key box, sprinkler lock box, hair brush diversion safe, or decorative outdoor crab lock box all for under $20. These are ideal for hiding a key to your house for neighbors or family members to use without it being obvious where you're storing it. You'll find small, portable lock boxes for cash, jewelry, and/or pistols you can store in your car for $35 or hundreds of choices for medium-sized safes you'd keep at home and possibly bolt to the floor or wall. For people who really aren't messing around and need oversized, fireproof, high-end burglary safe products, Wayfair has a FireKing safe for as much as $20,000. They have a good selection of firearm safes between $1,000 and $5,000 too, so you'll find the full range of home safes at Wayfair.

Great website

We always like browsing products on Wayfair's site because they offer so many pictures and details on all their items. Take, for example, a SentrySafe Security Safe Lock for $794. It comes in either a 27.8” height or 37.7” height with 5 photos showing the interior and exterior of the home safe from all angles. Based on our zip code, we get a delivery window so we know when we might expect our order to arrive. We can read a description of the home safe, see the weight and dimensions, and review all the specifications. Wayfair also shows a list of similar items you can compare, to ensure you pick the best one for you.

Best Home Safe Stores

30-day returns

The general return policy at Wayfair is that customers can return new, unused products they change their mind about within 30 days of delivery. Applicable return shipping costs will apply, so although you'll likely get a full refund from Wayfair, keep in mind that you'll have to pay whatever it costs to ship your safe back.

Honest reviews

We were pleased to see that the home safes on Wayfair have a lot more customer reviews on them than we found at any other retailer. The SentrySafe Security Safe Lock we mentioned earlier has 109 reviews with an overall rating average of 4.5 out of 5. You can choose just to look at the 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1-star reviews to get an overview of all the pros and cons with a particular product. This, along with the Better Business Bureau's "A+” rating of the company, goes a long way in helping us feel confident in buying a home safe here.

A top option by far

Wayfair never ceases to amaze us with their massive selection of products. Home safes are no exception and we are excited to see that they have fantastic options of all types here, big and small, stationary and transportable. Without a doubt, you should make Wayfair one of the first places you look when you're interested in buying a home safe online.

Home Depot Review 4.5 Star Rating

Home Depot

4.5 Star Rating
  • Free shipping on orders over $45
  • Same-day pickup or free 1-2 day delivery
  • Unfiltered customer reviews and Q&A
  • 90-day return policy
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Home Depot is the world's largest home improvement retailer. They were founded in 1978 and have over 2,300 bright orange stores across the United States. Home Depot offers over one million products for DIY customers, professional contractors, and the industry's largest installation business for the Do-It-For-Me customer. In addition to having everything you'd need to remodel your home, upgrade your appliances and fixtures, build a structure, do your landscaping, or fix issues in your house, Home Depot has a great collection of home safes.

Fantastic shopping experience

There are 364 results for safes at Home Depot. Some of the categories include home safes, office safes, wall safes, lock boxes, hidden safes, document safes, floor safes, hotel safes, and more. Their home safe collection has 75 results, but you may find that the safes in other categories could fit your needs as well. When you're narrowing down your options at Home Depot, you can select from small, medium, big, or extra-large safes. You could also select one that protects against fires, water, or impact. You can indicate your preferred safe capacity, lock type, and fire test duration. These are some of the best filters we've seen when shopping for home safes, and it makes it really easy to quickly see if Home Depot has what you want.

Comprehensive information

Home Depot does a great job of providing clear, detailed product listings for you to find out everything you'd need to know about an item you're interested in. There are multiple photos of the product, sometimes with a video from the brand, a 360-view, and a quick overview of the key features and dimensions of the product. You can read extensive product details about any given safe with warranty information, a product brochure, use and care guidance, specifications, and more. There shouldn't be many questions left once you've read through everything Home Depot provides about a product.

Best Home Safe Stores

Competitive pricing

The price range of safes sold at Home Depot starts at $30.23 for a fire resistant security box with a key lock, and goes up to $3,832.57 for an all-steel burglary and fire safe with an electronic lock. Prices seem to be similar to what we've seen elsewhere for a standard 0.5 cubic fire-resistant safe with a dual combination and key lock. A safe you could easily heft around and hide in your home is anywhere from $120 to $300 or more depending on the size and safety features.

Lighting-fast shipping

You can get an order through Home Depot lickety-split if they have the safe you're interested in at your nearest store. You simply order it through the website, select "pickup” as your delivery method, and you'll get a notification as soon as it's ready for you. If your chosen safe isn't available at your nearest store, you'll get free shipping if you spend over $45, and some orders qualify for either same-day or next-day delivery depending on availability. Regardless of which delivery method you go with, you should have your order within just a couple of days as long as it isn't backordered or delayed for any reason. When you checkout, you'll see the delivery date so you know exactly what to expect.

90-day return policy

We appreciate that Home Depot has a generous 90-day return policy. You can either pay to mail your home safe back to the store or just take it in and drop it off for free. You'll have more than enough time to decide if you've chosen the right safe, but it will need to be returned in new, unused condition to ensure you get all your money back. Home Depot is easy to work with, so they get a big thumbs up from us in regards to their return policy.

Best Home Safe Stores

Useful reviews and Q&A

When you shop through Home Depot, you'll always get a lot of helpful customer feedback since you can leave honest reviews on their products. It's a really popular store, so it's not uncommon to find that thousands of people have reviewed a particular item. People will add a review out of 5 stars, add photos, and post a description of the item. There is also a useful Q&A section where people ask questions and get responses about whether or not the safe can be bolted to a wall, what to do if the electronic lock breaks, how to get a replacement key, what to do if the battery dies, and many other relevant concerns.

"A+” from the BBB

The Better Business Bureau gives Home Depot an "A+” rating. We found plenty of reviews from disgruntled customers who had negative in-store experiences in certain places, but we aren't dissuaded by these whatsoever. We've always had success when shopping at Home Depot and are pleased with their selection. The feedback from buyers that they leave directly on a particular home safe from the website is going to be your best guide when you make a purchase.

What's not to like?

We like how many home safe options Home Depot has, the amount of customer reviews we can rely on, their solid return policy, and their comprehensive website. What's not to like here? Home Depot is a reliable place to shop for home safes and there are plenty of options that should fit the bill. They've earned one of our highest ratings.

Nationwide Safes Review 4 Star Rating

Nationwide Safes

4 Star Rating
  • Most safes cost between $100 and $500
  • Free shipping
  • 30-day refund policy
  • Unfiltered customer reviews
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Nationwide Safes was founded in 2005 by Ecommerce Concepts LLC with a mission to provide top-tier security solutions and safes for homes and businesses. Some of their clientele includes big names like Samsung, Apple, Department of Homeland Security, Pepsi, Chase Bank, the Army National Guard, and even the US Capitol. They've been featured by prominent media outlets like NBC, The Wall Street Journal, ABC, CBS, and Fox. The company boasts that they offer a diverse range of high-quality safes tailored to the needs of their clientele.

All types of safes

Nationwide Safes sells home safes, business safes, fireproof files, and safety and security products like tactical gear, survival and emergency preparedness products, alarms, sensors, and padlocks. They have one of the biggest selections of safes we've seen from any retailer. You can shop exclusively for safes that are fire-rated, burglary-safe, meant for a home office, can attach to a wall or in-floor, use biometric fingerprinting, or are designed to protect jewelry. If you prefer, you can select your installation location, weight, price range, exterior/interior size, cubic capacity, lock type, bolt down capability, and more. Shopping here is a breeze and there are so many great choices.

Good selection between $100 and $500

There are 266 products that fall under the "Residential Safes & Fire-Resistant Files” category. They range in price from $34 for a pistol rack to $9,667.50 for a fire and burglary gun safe. The majority of home safes fall in the $100 - $500 range. We considered a wall safe with a biometric fingerprint lock that was $412. It was in-stock and shipping was estimated to take 2-3 days which wasn't bad at all. It gave us an overview of the safe with information of what would be best to store in it. It also had a list of features including the body material, interior, locking system, safety features, memory, mounting, battery type, door/body thickness, and warranty (1 year). There is a downloadable operating instruction manual listed with most products as well.

Free shipping on most safes

It isn't entirely clear why some safes from Nationwide Safes qualify for free shipping when others don't. If you don't want to pay for delivery, look for the green "Free Shipping” tag on the product description. Luckily there are over 200 safes with this perk, so odds are the home safe you're interested in will ship for free.

Best Home Safe Stores

30-day returns with exceptions

You can make returns to Nationwide Safes, but only in some cases. Of course, if you receive a defective safe or one that was damaged in transit, you should reach out to the company right away and they'll take care of the issue. If you aren't satisfied with your safe for any other reason, you can return it new within 30 days (as long as it weighs less than 50 lbs.) and receive a refund, minus a 15% restocking fee. You'll also be responsible for return shipping, so no matter how you spin it, you won't get 100% of your money back.

Genuinely satisfied

Customers can go back and leave reviews on the performance of their home safe and experience with Nationwide Safes after purchase. Not all safes have customer reviews, while others have just a few. We like that this is an option, but it would be nice to see more feedback from buyers. The Better Business Bureau has given Nationwide Safes an "A+” rating, which is great. There are also really positive testimonials that Nationwide Safes has posted on their website from buyers, so assuming these are genuine, we believe that customers are genuinely satisfied with this company.

They know their stuff

We like that Nationwide Safes specializes in safes and not a million other random products. This is a company that knows security and has worked with big, reputable companies to help secure their valuables. Their selection of safes is impressive and we like how easy it is to narrow down the features you want. Nationwide Safes has earned a respectable rating here.

Lowes Review 4 Star Rating

Lowes

4 Star Rating
  • Free shipping on orders over $35
  • Same-day pickup options
  • 90-day return policy
  • Free in-store returns
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

Lowe's is a home improvement retailer based out of Mooresville, North Carolina. They operate a chain of 1,746 locations worldwide and are the second-largest in the US hardware and home improvement market. You might think of Lowe's as the fraternal twin to Home Depot since they carry similar items and are extremely popular among DIYers (and anyone with a property to maintain).

Know what you're looking for

On top of carrying products for landscaping and home improvement projects, Lowe's has a good selection of home safes. Their website shows over 1,100 results which was impressive to us until we realized that in the mix of "home safes” were children's swings, crock pots, a sushi making kit (who knew they even sold this?), salad tongs, WD-40 and other totally unrelated products. We felt a bit jumbled as we looked through all their results, so we recommend sorting by brand, lock type, protection features, safe type, size, size, material, and other relevant details.

Affordable options

Lowe's has a selection of 207 home safes that use electronic keypads. They also have categories of floor safes and SentrySafes. You can sort any category from prices low to high to find your budget or just browse all the safes in categories of $100 - $200, $200 - $400, $400 - $600, or more. There are quite a few safes in the $100 - $200 range, which is totally affordable. Most of them range from 0.5 - 1.5 cubic feet, some with fireproof and waterproof ratings. If you're in the market for something bigger and beefier, you'll also find large fireproof and waterproof gun safes from brands like Remington that are as much as $5,000.

Best Home Safe Stores

All you need to know

You'll find out everything you need to know about a home safe you're interested in, since the Lowe's website is really comprehensive. We were interested in a Fleming Supply 0.6 cu-ft Floor Safe with Electronic Keypad Lock for just $123.26. There are 7 photos of the safe from all angles along with an overview of the safe and its features. We also were able to read how the lock mechanism works, dimensions, safety features, specifications, and a comparison with other similar home safes.

Reviews and Q&A

Lowe's has a plethora of customer reviews on most of their products since this is a popular place to shop online. Some of the safes had hundreds of reviews while others just had one or two. They also have a community Q&A forum available on all products for potential buyers to get information about the safe that they are curious about. Some of the Q&A threads are really active. This is another great thing to read through to learn as much as you can about a particular safe.

Same-day pickup options and free shipping

Since Lowe's has so many locations throughout the United States, it makes it possible to do same-day pickup in some instances. If the home safe you want happens to be in-stock at a store nearby, you might be able to order it from the website and drive over a few hours later and grab it from the pickup desk right inside the store. If you order a safe that needs to be shipped, Lowe's will list the date of delivery when you check out, and usually it's only a few days at most. On qualifying orders of $35 or more, customers will get free shipping.

Best Home Safe Stores

90-day returns in-store

If you decide to return the safe you purchased from Lowe's, know that most new and unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged within 90 days. You can either take your order straight back to a Lowe's store (the easiest option) or mail it back if you really want to. You'll just be responsible for the cost of return shipping.

No red flags

Lowe's is one of those stores you just know you can count on. They're one of the best in the business for a reason and they have good reviews from customers. The Better Business Bureau gives them an "A+” rating and their customer reviews on each home safe are a fantastic guide to refer to when making a purchase. There are no red flags we are concerned about when it comes to shopping here.

Not as organized, but still a great choice

Lowe's is a great choice if you're looking for a home safe. If we had to have one grievance with shopping here, it would be that their huge inventory doesn't seem as neatly organized on their website as we'd like it to be. Some of their competitors do a better job of keeping all their home safe choices more neatly organized, but this shouldn't affect whether or not you have a good experience with your Lowe's purchase. They've earned a good rating from us.

Walmart Review 3.5 Star Rating

Walmart

3.5 Star Rating
  • Over 270 home safes
  • 90-day return policy
  • Unfiltered customer reviews
  • Free shipping on orders over $35
  • "A-” Better Business Bureau rating

Walmart is a top place for many Americans to buy groceries, clothing, electronics, home goods, furniture, toys, outdoor products, and just about everything else you can think of. They feature incredibly low prices, quick delivery, and good customer service. There are over 4,700 Walmart locations throughout the United States with hundreds of thousands of products, but home safes are one item that you'll need to buy online. If you're impressed with how many things you can find in Walmart's stores, just wait until you see all the possibilities unfold when you shop on their website.

They've got it all

It feels like Walmart has everything. You might not always find the highest-quality items or name-brand products here, but you've got to give it to Walmart for being such a good go-to store for any random or staple item you need. Their selection of over 270 home safes attests to this. The majority of their selection comes from the SentrySafe brand, with 140 products. You can choose to view the safes from Walmart by the price, brand, fulfillment speed, length, lock type, capacity, height, color, customer rating, size, material, features, and more.

Affordable options

You could spend as little as $9 on a Tebru Mini Simulation Dictionary Book Money Box with a combination lock or $1,685 for a Mesa Ammunition Fire Security Safe that's 6.6 cubic feet. The majority of home safes here are well under $300, so you will definitely have tons of choices at affordable prices. This is one of Walmart's big selling points. Since they ship items free if you spend over $35, most safes can be delivered to your home within a couple of days at no additional cost to you.

Easily compare products

One safe we were intrigued by from Walmart was the VEVORbrand 1.7 cu. ft. fingerprint safe box for money with two keys and a digital keypad. It is designed for storing jewelry, pistols, cash, and documents. The cost of the safe was just $99.99, but at the time of this review, the larger 2.1 cu. ft. size was on sale for $91.99. When we put in our zip code, we saw that the safe would arrive at our home in one week. Walmart showed us a list of other similar products that we could compare with, which is a great way to quickly identify the best choice. We read through detailed product features, specifications, and warranty information (1 year). This safe comes with a 4-lock system, can be mounted to a wall, has a dust-proof interior, and removable shelves. It isn't waterproof or fireproof, but would be a way to protect valuables from other people in or outside of your home or office.

Best Home Safe Stores

Easy in-store returns

Walmart's standard return policy states that customers can return products in-store or by mail within 90 days of purchase. Since most people have a Walmart within a few miles from their home, the easiest thing to do would be to take your home safe to the store and initiate a return with the customer service desk. It's free and only takes a few minutes.

Shop confidently

Walmart is somewhere that you can often refer to customer reviews on products to get a clear picture of how well the product holds up, if there were any issues with the ordering process, and what the quality is like. There are a few safes that have a decent number of customer reviews, but we noticed that a lot of them have none. Still, you should be able to get plenty of details about a particular item and even research the brand enough to find a safe here that you feel confident about. Walmart has an "A-” rating from the Better Business Bureau and has been around the block long enough that we don't have to question whether or not this company will deliver on what they sell online.

A surprisingly good option

Whenever you shop at Walmart, you can feel confident that you're getting some of the best prices available. They often run sales and you won't often find their products much cheaper anywhere else. We're impressed with how many medium-size home safes are sold by Walmart and feel confident that for a simple solution to protecting valuables, you could find something without a problem. We highly recommend looking over the selection of home safes here because Walmart has earned a good rating from us.

Home Security Superstore Review 3.5 Star Rating

Home Security Superstore

3.5 Star Rating
  • Free shipping on orders over $25
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Save 15% with email signup
  • 90-day return policy
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

The Home Security Superstore is located in Atlanta, Georgia. They have a long list of products, all of which fall under the "security” umbrella. Here you can find spy cameras, pepper guns, tactical batons, knives, bulletproof backpacks, nightsticks, ammo, locks, alarms, flashlights, GPS trackers, safety products, and so much more. This is a store that not only supplies people with items for personal protection, but also likely outfits professionals in the security and law enforcement industry.

Fun, unique diversion safes

There are 84 types of safes available from The Home Security Superstore, some more typical than others. We were drawn to their "can safes” category which includes things like a Coke can that could hold a secret stash of cash or jewelry, fake AJAX powder cleanser as a diversion safe, a fake Axe body spray can that can be opened up to reveal secret contents, and more. Their diversion safes are similar with unique items like a fake outlet, hollow book safes, fake sprinkler spare key holder, fake roller hairbrush for a secret stash, and more. There are quite a few items that no one would suspect if you had them disguised around your home.

Small selection of home safes

There are 17 safes specifically labeled as "home safes” from The Home Security Superstore. They range in price from $272.99 for a Quick Access Electronic Biometric Fingerprint Gun Safe to $3,067 for a tall Hollon Fire & Burglary Rated Dial Lock Safe. We'll take a home safe that falls in the middle of these price ranges as an example. The Hollon 310E Fireproof Electronic Keypad Lock Safe is $381 (this is still on the low end of pricing for most safes here). It can withstand up to 1,750 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 2 hours, has a master combination and 4 additional codes that can be set, and can be bolted to the floor if the customer chooses to. This safe includes 0.54 cubic feet of storage and comes with a lifetime after-fire replacement warranty.

Free shipping over $25

Overall, there aren't as many "cheap” safe options for home safes here. In addition to there only being 17 home safes, most of them are at least a few hundred dollars, which could be more than some people are looking to spend. We recommend signing up for their email list to get a 15% off code on your first purchase to help you save a bit. Also, it's nice that The Home Security Superstore will ship all orders over $25 for free.

Best Home Safe Stores

Full refunds within 30 days

If you need to return the safe you purchased from The Home Security Superstore, you'll need to call customer service and get a Return Authorization (RA) first. This request needs to be made within 30 days of delivery to receive a full refund to your original form of payment. Any other returns outside of the 30-day window but within 90 days may receive store credit or qualify for an exchange. If your safe is returned in completely new condition you will get 100% of the purchase cost back, but you may be subject to a 30% restocking fee if the safe is sent back in used condition or packaging that cannot be resealed.

Fantastic BBB ratings

We found a flawless "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for The Home Security Superstore. On their BBB profile, there are hundreds of fantastic reviews from people saying their items were great and delivered quickly, products are effective, customer service is fantastic, and so much more. Assuming that these reviews are all honest and real (we noticed they were all made within weeks of each other), this is reassuring. Customers can also leave honest reviews on individual products, but there are only 2-4 comments left on some home safes that you can read through.

Not the best inventory

The Home Security Superstore is a well-liked and popular destination for all types of security equipment. However, home safes aren't necessarily their top-selling product or their main focus. You may very likely find something that fits everything you're looking for here, but there aren't quite as many choices for home safes as we've found through other retailers. We don't see any reason not to take a look at their inventory, but there are other great options we've reviewed if you don't find what you're looking for at The Home Security Superstore.

Best Buy is an electronics retailer headquartered in Richfield, Minnesota. They're a go-to store for anyone thinking of buying a TV, phone, speakers, computer, video game system, camera, drone, or any other type of electronic device. The company has over 1,200 domestic and international stores, but their inventory pales in comparison to what you can purchase from Best Buy online. You can buy just about any mainstream brand of electronics from Best Buy's website and have it delivered straight to your door.

A reasonable selection

The smallest type of safe you can purchase from Best Buy is a low profile cash box with a key lock for just $34.99. It's a really basic product without any fire safety features, but it would be a good way to organize money and keep it locked safe somewhere in your home if that's all you need. You can find Honeywell or Barska safes around 0.41 cubic feet with a digital keypad for under $100. A medium-sized safe with fireproof features is around $250 and with more features and larger sizes come higher prices. You can spend as much as $1,536.99 for a two-lock depository safe with a digital keypad. Although there aren't tons of choices for safes at Best Buy, there is a decent selection that includes enough for most people's basic requirements.

Inconspicuous lock boxes

Some fun and unique lock boxes we found at Best Buy were dictionaries and antique-looking books that can actually be opened up with a code to reveal a compartment for you to keep valuables. They are big enough to keep some documents, jewelry, and cash. It's the perfect, inconspicuous way to disguise a lock box. Just stick it on a bookshelf with other books or use it as decor and no one would suspect a thing.

Comprehensive product listings

For any home safe you're viewing on Best Buy's website, you'll be shown the price, availability, unfiltered customer reviews, whether or not the safe is water resistant, and a list of full specs like the lock type, exterior and interior product dimensions, warranty (usually a 1-year manufacturer's warranty), color, model number, and more. There are plenty of product photos to give you a good idea of exactly what the safe looks like from all angles too.

Delivery or pick-up options

You can either have your safe shipped to your home, or pick it up at your closest Best Buy store. A pickup and delivery date are shown upfront so you can choose which one is more convenient for you. If your local store has it in-stock, you could quickly purchase it online and head over in as little as 1 hour to get your safe and bring it home. You can narrow down your selection of safes or any other item from Best Buy based on your delivery preference.

15-day return window

If you spend over $35 on an order at Best Buy, your order will ship for free. If you need to make a return, be aware that Best Buy's return window is a bit shorter than most stores. Standard returns can be done within 15 days of purchase and can either be taken straight to your local Best Buy store or done online. If you log into your Best Buy account and locate your order, you can request a free prepaid shipping label to use on your return.

Best Home Safe Stores

Read product reviews

Best Buy has an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau. We've found that with this store, it's best to rely on product reviews from their website to see if the home safe is high-quality and works well. Their third-party reviews are mixed and often refer to specific in-store experiences. People often make large, expensive purchases here, so that can result in even more vocal customers if they aren't completely satisfied with their shopping experience, and that's not likely to have anything to do with your home safe order.

Poor customer service communication

We will say that one issue that we've often seen (and experienced ourselves) with Best Buy is getting in touch with someone specific through customer service. For example, if you do an in-store pickup for a home safe and run into an issue with it, there isn't a way to call your local store directly. Best Buy's customer service team is all in one central location and doesn't allow you to easily contact an individual store. This makes for a less personalized experience and can cause issues.

An average choice

Best Buy is a reputable store that's popular for buying any type of electronics. Their selection of home safes isn't anything that we're overly impressed with, but it's a basic enough selection that if you're not looking to spend a lot of money and just want to protect some documents and other small valuables, what you find here would do the job. We also don't love Best Buy's short return policy and potential difficulties you could experience trying to talk with your local store. Because of this, they've earned an average rating from us.

Target Review 3 Star Rating

Target

3 Star Rating
  • Most safes under $500
  • Free shipping over $35
  • 90-day return policy
  • Unfiltered customer reviews
  • "A+” Better Business Bureau rating

If you're anything like us, when you think of Target, your mind goes to trendy clothes, home decor, fun seasonal items, and groceries. This store has an extensive online selection of clothing, electronics, furniture, kitchen and dining products, toys, sports, equipment, and so much more. You'll never be bored shopping here as new surprises are always just around the corner. And, surprise, surprise! Target also sells home safes. It's not an item you'll see on the shelves in their physical stores, but they have them available to buy online.

Basic selection

Target's selection of home safes isn't expansive by any means, but it's enough to give you something basic to keep valuables locked up. There are 41 choices of pretty generic home safes mostly all under 1 cubic ft. The largest safe is a 2.4 cubic ft. Honeywell 2 Hour UL Steel Waterproof Safe for $1,699. All other safes are under $500 from brands like SentrySafe, Templeton Safes, and Stalwart, among others. They're ideal for storing things like cash, electronics, jewelry, paperwork, medication, and other small-to medium-sized objects.

Small and simple cash boxes

If you're needing something really small and simple to fit in your dorm room, apartment, or slide onto a small shelf, there are quite a few cash boxes available at Target. There's even a teal Honeywell cash box for just $19.99 that's... cute? Safes don't have to be boring-looking, right? You could also explore their secret safe flower pot, analog clock safe, and a couple other discreet items they have. You won't be finding anything big and bulky to store firearms or large items here, so you'd have to instead look to a more security-focused retailer.

Great web navigation

Target has a great website to navigate, so even though there aren't a lot of home safe choices here, you could still narrow them down by features, ratings, price, lock type, brand, and more. When you click on a product, you are shown a few pictures that Target provides of their items as well as any others that customers may have uploaded. You can easily see the safe's price and what day you could expect it to be delivered to your home. Target includes useful product highlights, a description, a Q&A section, shipping and returns details, and customer reviews.

Best Home Safe Stores

90-day returns

Target usually offers in-store pickup options, but since their safes aren't sold in-store, you'll need to have it shipped to your home. Usually Target will have your items delivered to you within just a couple of days. If you spend over $35 here, you'll get free shipping. They have an awesome return policy that gives customers 90 days to take items back to their store for free or return them by mail.

Few reviews on safes

Most of the time you'll find up to hundreds of helpful customer reviews on Target's products, which is one of the best reasons to shop here. However, safes aren't one of their popular products, so we noticed that a lot of safes either had no customer reviews or only a few. However, the Better Business Bureau gives Target an "A+” rating and we trust that this is a reliable place to shop.

Decent choice

You won't find top-of-the-line home safes from Target, but if that's not what you're going for, then you'll probably find a simple, affordable product here. Target is a trustworthy store with customer-friendly policies that allow you to get a good deal on your product and delivery and have plenty of time to make a return if needed. This is a decent place to look for a home safe, so they've earned an average rating from us.

Buy a Safe Review 1.5 Star Rating

Buy a Safe

1.5 Star Rating
  • 21 product categories
  • 30-day return shipping
  • Free shipping on most orders

Buy a Safe has dedicated themselves to stocking the most effective security items and safes in today's market. They strive to offer high-quality solutions at affordable prices from industry-leading brands like Cobalt, First Alert, Honeywell, Protex Safe Company, Winchester, and Hayman. Buy a Safe was founded in 1991 and launched their website in 2002. They have over 30 years of experience in the industry and strive to provide customers with top-rated safes.

Lots of categories, small inventory

Buy a Safe doesn't have the prettiest website, but it gets the job done. They have a long list of product categories, telling us that this company knows their stuff. In theory, you can choose from biometric safes, can safes, cash boxes, exit alarms, fingerprint safes, gun safes, key cabinets, specialty-diversion safes, wall safes, home safes, and many more products. However, we quickly found that even though there are a lot of product categories, the choices in each category are limited. For example, there are only 4 biometric safes, 1 cash box, no fingerprint locks, 3 key cabinets, and 2 wall safes. Quite a few categories have no results at all, so overall the inventory from Buy a Safe isn't that impressive (or it's not kept well-stocked).

Mix of safe types for your home

The biggest selection we found was in the "Home Safes” category. This is a mix of products from other categories that could reasonably be used in your home. The least expensive choice is the Protex Electronic Wall Safe for $322.75 and the most expensive is the AMSEC Burglary Rated Fire Safe for $2,980. In between these two options, there are 32 choices of floor safes, burglary safes, and cash safes, mostly coming in around $1,000. We wish there was a way to sort by features so you could quickly choose something that's fire-rated, fits the dimensions you want, and uses a keypad (or whatever your specific requirements may be). Rather, you'll have to click through the individual choices and read about their specifications.

Basic description

Each product listing shows one or two photos of the product and a basic description of the item with details like the door thickness, burglary rating, lock type, dimensions, and more. You aren't able to see the shipping time frame before adding it to cart or any customer reviews. Buy a Safe doesn't specifically say how much you have to spend in order to get free shipping, but we found that most safes could be delivered for free.

Best Home Safe Stores

25% restocking fees

The return policy for safes purchased through Buy a Safe is pretty standard, with one exception. Customers have 30 days to send back their safes (and are responsible for return shipping costs). However, all returns will come with a 25% restocking fee, which is a big bummer. This could add up to hundreds of dollars. So it's safe to say that if you shop here, make sure you don't plan on returning anything.

No customer feedback

The Better Business Bureau doesn't have a rating for Buy a Safe. This is especially disappointing since Buy a Safe doesn't have customer reviews on their products. Even taking third-party reviews into account, there is almost nothing to go off as far as customer satisfaction. It doesn't seem that Buy a Safe is a growing and thriving company, so there isn't much to find regarding people's experience with shopping here. If the company wanted to improve and build their business, customer reviews would be a great place to start.

Disappointing

Buy a Safe has so much potential, but we were severely let down. Between their small inventory, lack of product reviews, 25% restocking fee, and overall poor website presentation, we won't be making this a go-to place to buy home safes and wouldn't recommend it for you either.

Most safes have a simple keypad for you to input your code whenever you need it opened. They usually come with a backup key in the event that you forget your code or just prefer not to use it. High-end safes may use fingerprint technology that allows access to what's inside. Pay attention to all the safety features listed with a particular safe so you know how to access its contents and what it can handle with respect to heat, water, and impact resistance.

You can get a small, simple safe to protect documents, valuable items, and cash for well under $300 through many retailers. However, if you have a lot of large items to store like firearms, you could easily spend up to a couple thousand dollars. Either way, you'll have the peace of mind that when you leave the house or go on an extended vacation, your most important personal property is well-protected. It's worth spending the money to get something high-quality that will withstand whatever potential threats you are concerned about.

We've done a lot of research about some of the best online retailers that sell safes and recommend keeping the following things in mind when you're shopping:

  • Selection. Are there a variety of different home safes to choose from? Does the company clearly outline the features like interior lighting, heat resistance, size, and other unique design features? Find a company that has a good range of sizes so you make sure you find something that is spacious enough to comfortably fit everything you need inside.
  • Price. Are there plenty of options for you to choose from in a range of different prices? Does the company ever run major sales that could help you save a bit on your safe? Do they offer free shipping?
  • Return policy. If your safe arrives and you find that it isn't going to be big enough for your needs or you decide you need one with different features, can you return it for a full refund? How long do you have to return or replace items through the store? Make sure you're aware of the return policy before making a purchase.

Home Safe Store FAQ

Nowadays most safes are made out of steel. The steel walls are usually a few centimeters thick and are sometimes double-layered to protect whatever is inside. Depending on the purpose of the safe, it could be surrounded by concrete or be made of different gauges of steel to protect the contents if exposed to pressure or extreme heat.
You can find a safe in nearly any size you need. If you're just using it for storing papers, jewelry, or a handgun, you could buy a small safe that fits on a shelf or in a drawer. For large items, you can buy a safe as big as 6.5 ft. tall or more that takes up more space. A big safe could not be carried away by burglars or easily moved by anyone else in the home. The best thing to do is take an inventory of everything you want to protect and purchase a safe big enough to hold all of those things with a little extra room left over.
If you're looking to keep your valuables safe from fire or water, make sure you buy a safe that is labeled specifically for these purposes. Pay close attention to the fire-resistance rating on any given safe you buy because this lets you know how long the safe can withstand the heat from flames. Some will begin to melt within an hour while others can last up to 4 hours being surrounded by fire. For water-resistance, it is best to keep valuables in a waterproof container within the safe and make sure the safe you buy was manufactured to protect against water damage.
Anything in your home that you consider valuable and worth protecting should be stored in a safe. For example, if you have a family heirloom that you want to keep in good condition, it would be smart to keep it in a safe where it is away from people and protected from the elements. For families with guns, safes are a great way to keep children and visitors away from the potential dangers of playing with firearms. Other items like jewelry, important legal documents or cash could also be kept in a safe in case there is an emergency with the home or a home invasion.
If you're worried about forgetting the code to your safe or losing the key, it is best to consult a professional locksmith rather than attempting to bust your safe open. For those concerned about their safe being compromised or taken by a home intruder, the good news is that it takes a lot of effort to crack a safe open. Without knowing the code to a safe, you would have to try to smash through the steel which could take a lot of time. The chances of someone coming at random to your home and being able to collect the valuables you have locked away, is highly unlikely. However, it is best not to advertise that you have a home safe, let alone disclose its location.
The cost of your safe depends entirely on what the safe is for, what it is made out of, the size, and the security measures required to get into it. For a small, light-weight safe that could be moved around and comes with a simple keypad lock, you could spend as little as $50. However, if you want a fireproof, waterproof, multi-security feature, steel safe that's 6 ft. tall, you'll easily spend over $1,000. The cost to protect your valuables is worth it in the long-run when you buy a heavy-duty safe for your home.
Most home safes come with either a digital number keypad, dial/combination, or lock and key feature for opening and closing it. Unless you have the key or know the code to the safe, essentially it cannot be opened. Some safes are disguised into walls, behind cabinets or paintings, and others are bolted to the ground. They are meant to be somewhat hidden and impossible to open unless you are the owner of the safe.
Safes are not so much bulletproof as they are bullet-resistant. If they are made of thick steel, they should be able to take a few rounds of bullets without causing any harm to the contents inside. Shooting at the combination or lock of a safe will not blast the door open like you see in movies. Shooting a gun at a home safe will cause damage, but it would take knowing the combination to successfully open the safe entirely.
