Lowe's is a home improvement retailer based out of Mooresville, North Carolina. They operate a chain of 1,746 locations worldwide and are the second-largest in the US hardware and home improvement market. You might think of Lowe's as the fraternal twin to Home Depot since they carry similar items and are extremely popular among DIYers (and anyone with a property to maintain).
Know what you're looking for
On top of carrying products for landscaping and home improvement projects, Lowe's has a good selection of home safes. Their website shows over 1,100 results which was impressive to us until we realized that in the mix of "home safes” were children's swings, crock pots, a sushi making kit (who knew they even sold this?), salad tongs, WD-40 and other totally unrelated products. We felt a bit jumbled as we looked through all their results, so we recommend sorting by brand, lock type, protection features, safe type, size, size, material, and other relevant details.
Affordable options
Lowe's has a selection of 207 home safes that use electronic keypads. They also have categories of floor safes and SentrySafes. You can sort any category from prices low to high to find your budget or just browse all the safes in categories of $100 - $200, $200 - $400, $400 - $600, or more. There are quite a few safes in the $100 - $200 range, which is totally affordable. Most of them range from 0.5 - 1.5 cubic feet, some with fireproof and waterproof ratings. If you're in the market for something bigger and beefier, you'll also find large fireproof and waterproof gun safes from brands like Remington that are as much as $5,000.
All you need to know
You'll find out everything you need to know about a home safe you're interested in, since the Lowe's website is really comprehensive. We were interested in a Fleming Supply 0.6 cu-ft Floor Safe with Electronic Keypad Lock for just $123.26. There are 7 photos of the safe from all angles along with an overview of the safe and its features. We also were able to read how the lock mechanism works, dimensions, safety features, specifications, and a comparison with other similar home safes.
Reviews and Q&A
Lowe's has a plethora of customer reviews on most of their products since this is a popular place to shop online. Some of the safes had hundreds of reviews while others just had one or two. They also have a community Q&A forum available on all products for potential buyers to get information about the safe that they are curious about. Some of the Q&A threads are really active. This is another great thing to read through to learn as much as you can about a particular safe.
Same-day pickup options and free shipping
Since Lowe's has so many locations throughout the United States, it makes it possible to do same-day pickup in some instances. If the home safe you want happens to be in-stock at a store nearby, you might be able to order it from the website and drive over a few hours later and grab it from the pickup desk right inside the store. If you order a safe that needs to be shipped, Lowe's will list the date of delivery when you check out, and usually it's only a few days at most. On qualifying orders of $35 or more, customers will get free shipping.
90-day returns in-store
If you decide to return the safe you purchased from Lowe's, know that most new and unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged within 90 days. You can either take your order straight back to a Lowe's store (the easiest option) or mail it back if you really want to. You'll just be responsible for the cost of return shipping.
No red flags
Lowe's is one of those stores you just know you can count on. They're one of the best in the business for a reason and they have good reviews from customers. The Better Business Bureau gives them an "A+” rating and their customer reviews on each home safe are a fantastic guide to refer to when making a purchase. There are no red flags we are concerned about when it comes to shopping here.
Not as organized, but still a great choice
Lowe's is a great choice if you're looking for a home safe. If we had to have one grievance with shopping here, it would be that their huge inventory doesn't seem as neatly organized on their website as we'd like it to be. Some of their competitors do a better job of keeping all their home safe choices more neatly organized, but this shouldn't affect whether or not you have a good experience with your Lowe's purchase. They've earned a good rating from us.
There are quite a few reasons you might want to consider purchasing a safe for your home. We all have important documents like birth certificates, passports, deeds to our home, tax information, marriage certificates, social security cards, and more. So where do you store them? These are things you want easy access to, but don't want anyone else to get their hands on. Keeping them in a safe is a way to stay organized and ensure your privacy is protected in case of theft.
Aside from the risk of someone entering your home or rummaging through your things and stealing documents you don't want to lose, safes often can protect against natural disasters. Many home safes are fire-resistant and could preserve your valuables if the rest of your home were to burn down or be damaged by smoke. They can also protect against flooding, earthquakes, or other unexpected events that put your belongings at risk.
Most safes have a simple keypad for you to input your code whenever you need it opened. They usually come with a backup key in the event that you forget your code or just prefer not to use it. High-end safes may use fingerprint technology that allows access to what's inside. Pay attention to all the safety features listed with a particular safe so you know how to access its contents and what it can handle with respect to heat, water, and impact resistance.
You can get a small, simple safe to protect documents, valuable items, and cash for well under $300 through many retailers. However, if you have a lot of large items to store like firearms, you could easily spend up to a couple thousand dollars. Either way, you'll have the peace of mind that when you leave the house or go on an extended vacation, your most important personal property is well-protected. It's worth spending the money to get something high-quality that will withstand whatever potential threats you are concerned about.
We've done a lot of research about some of the best online retailers that sell safes and recommend keeping the following things in mind when you're shopping:
