Many new trends have evolved in home security systems over the past several years as technology in general has changed, improved and dropped in price. These changes in technology have allowed the use of home security systems to expand beyond deterring crime but have led to security systems being used for a variety of other purposes.

Wireless Home Security. The change toward wireless home security systems is one such trend and the most obvious. Wireless technology allows for home security systems to be installed easily, without drilling holes in the walls and running wires through conduits in the wall. Furthermore, wireless technology has improved home security systems by allowing more monitoring points around the home that are safe from being cut or tampered with.

Video Technology. Other trends include the addition and improvement of camera and video technology, self-monitoring and smart homes. With the use of a computer or smart phone quickly look at the interior or exterior of your home to identify if children have arrived home safely or if someone is outside your home that may present risk. Video cameras are now technologically better and cheaper than ever. Today's cheaper camera prices make it affordable to place real-time HD cameras around your home. These cameras can now record video directly to a DVR rather than to tape or to the hard drive of your control panel.

Self Monitoring. Improvements in mobile technology, such as smart phones, laptops and tablets, have also contributed to another trend in home security systems: self-monitoring. With this option, your home security system notifies you, when the alarm has been triggered. It is then your responsibility to respond and call for help. You can use your mobile device to do a variety of monitoring tasks including enabling or disabling your alarm system, receiving video feed from your home's security cameras and receiving text messages whenever your alarm has been triggered.

Home Automation. Home automation is another trend in home security. This allows the homeowner to choose options with the home security system to run a variety of other systems in the house. Home security systems with a home automation option can monitor and manage the thermostat, activate humidity controls, interface with certain appliances, activate or deactivate specific electrical outlets and lights, and control home entertainment centers. Why should I get a home security system?

There are more than 2 million break-ins every year in the United States alone. Home security systems are the most logical way to give yourself the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you, your loved ones and your property are being watched over.

What are some key features my security system should have?

The most important feature is 24/7 monitoring, which most services offer as part of your monthly fees. At a minimum, you'll want to have sensors for all of the exterior doors in your residence.

What extra features should I consider?

There are many add-ons that can offer additional security and protection. Your home security system could have smoke and CO2 detectors, flooding sensors, motion detectors, night vision cameras, and much more.

Do I have to sign a contract?

You'll find plans both with and without required service contracts. The tradeoff is usually in the price of the equipment vs. the monthly service fees. (See the next question for more on that.)

Are these systems expensive?

That depends. You should expect two costs: equipment and monthly service charges. Some providers of home security systems give you the equipment "for free", as long as you sign a contract (usually 2-5 years). Others have you pay for the equipment upfront as a one-time charge, but their monthly fees tend to be lower. And, with most services, you'll pay more for monthly monitoring if your system has all of the bells and whistles.

Do I have to pay extra for installation?

One of the most customer-friendly aspects of today's home security systems is DIY installation. While there are still a handful of companies that require you to sit down with a sales rep and then wait for a professional to come and set up your system, the vast majority are designed to be easy and fast for you to install yourself. You'll have ample support via phone or online chat if you need extra guidance during the process.

Is there a satisfaction guarantee?

Yes, most of the time. You'll typically have a 30-day window to use your home security system and decide if it provides the protection and service you need. Terms vary, however: you may get a full refund for all fees paid, or you may only be allowed to break your contract without getting any money back. Be sure to understand the details of any plan you select, before you sign up.

What if I move? Can I bring my home security system with me?

Usually, yes. Because of the do-it-yourself nature of most of today's systems, you can uninstall and move your equipment just as easily as you set it up the first time. You'll just need to update the company with your current address, so that emergency responders have the right location in the event of an alarm.
