Puckerbutt Pepper Company is the creation of "Smokin'” Ed Currie, a breeder of chili peppers who holds the Guinness World Record for growing the hottest chili pepper in the world - not once but twice. Have some fun going through the videos and links on the company website: see Rhett and Link or Chili Klaus eat one of Smokin' Ed's Carolina Reapers, or read what The New Yorker had to say about the record-holding heat of the peppers used to make the hot sauces here.
One bottle each month
The hot sauce club offered by Puckerbutt Pepper Company is a little light on details. You'll get one bottle every month - not necessarily just from Smokin' Ed's own kitchen, but maybe one that he's found and is excited about - along with a note describing the hot sauce and why he finds it interesting. And, if you're a big fan of what this company makes on its own, subscribers to the hot sauce club here will get early access to anything new coming from the kitchen.
Month-to-month or year-long subscription
You've got two options for setting up your hot sauce subscription at Puckerbutt Pepper Company: either pay $10 for a month-to-month recurring plan, or pay $109.99 for a year-long membership. Shipping isn't included in the cost of the hot sauce club, but it's not that expensive either: when we added the 12-month subscription to our cart, we were only charged $6.07 for the entire plan, not per month. On the other hand, the month-to-month plan came with a fee of $4.81 per month for shipping, bringing the total price to $14.81 for one bottle of hot sauce. That's not too far off from most rival hot sauce clubs on our list.
Zero gift-giving tools
While you can definitely give the Puckerbutt Pepper Company's hot sauce clubs as a gift, there's nothing that makes it stand out. Other than entering a different address for shipping and billing, the store doesn't offer the ability to designate the subscription as something being gifted: no note, no scheduling in advance for a special occasion, and so on.
Club would benefit from customer reviews
This company has a solid reputation overall, with an "A+” from the Better Business Bureau, positive feedback for its in-person locations, and a decent number of reviews on individual hot sauces in the online store. But, there's no place for hot sauce club subscribers to leave any feedback, making it a challenge to determine if this club is a winner or yet another wannabe.
Room to improve
If you like supporting small businesses and you don't mind taking a chance on a lesser-known hot sauce club, Puckerbutt Pepper Company might be worth a look. But, for us, it just doesn't come with anything that catches our attention. We'd be happy to bump up this store's rating in the future once more details about the included hot sauces are provided (or even some ratings for the club itself), but for now it ranks low on our list.
Thinking that a hot sauce is the perfect gift for a friend or the ultimate way to treat yourself? You're right. Most hot sauce clubs come with easy-breezy gift-giving features, from fun newsletters to jazz up the overall experience with serving suggestions and background info on the hot sauce makers, to hassle-free scheduling of a gift notification and the first delivery.
Hot sauce, a condiment with ancient roots, has evolved from being a simple addition to meals to becoming a beloved flavor enhancer that boasts a wide range of tastes and heat levels. Its history dates back to ancient civilizations like the Mayans and Aztecs, who used spicy concoctions to enhance their dishes and believed in the medicinal properties of chili peppers.
Today, hot sauce has transcended cultural boundaries and has become a staple in kitchens around the world, inspiring a vibrant subculture of hot sauce enthusiasts. Hot sauce owes its popularity to the complex interplay between its primary ingredients: chili peppers, vinegar, salt, and various spices.
The Scoville Heat Scale measures the spiciness of peppers, making it possible to create sauces with different levels of heat, from mild to mouth-numbingly intense. Hot sauce not only tantalizes taste buds but also triggers the release of endorphins, leading to a pleasurable sensory experience akin to a culinary adventure.
But not everyone is fortunate enough to have a variety of hot sauce flavors on their local supermarket shelves. Not to worry. Hot sauce clubs have emerged as a unique way for enthusiasts to explore new and exciting flavors on a regular basis. These clubs offer subscription-based plans that deliver carefully curated selections of hot sauces to members' doorsteps.
Now, the fun part: choosing which hot sauce club to get into. You've got lots of options out there, so how can you decide which one gets your subscription? Here are a few ways to compare the hot sauce plans you're considering:
