But, after the first box, you'll only be able to ask for an exchange or a voucher (store credit) if you get a defective piece of jewelry, an incomplete order (like only one earring), or the wrong thing altogether.

You do have to return everything in the order, not just a piece you might not have liked, and it all has to be in new condition. Still, if one particular month's jewelry just isn't it for you, you're not stuck with it. Love!

This subscription delivers three pieces of costume jewelry each month, which can include earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets. You'll pay $24/90 per box if you opt for month-to-month billing, but that drops to anywhere from $15.90 to $19.90 when you prepay for a subscription lasting 3, 6, or 12 months. Cratejoy also had a promo code (HALFOFF) while we were visiting that gave us a 50% discount on the first box when choosing any prepaid subscription of at least 3 months.

Not only can you tell them your ring size, but you can also indicate if earrings are a "yay” or "nay” for you, and you can specify the style(s) you like (statement, minimalist, fun and trendy, delicate, bohemian). There's also a Gelry subscription for teens, if you're shopping for someone on the younger side; we'd go so far as to say this would be a good option for a tween or even a child, if the unicorn earrings and pendant shown are any indicator of what's included.

Takes some of your preferences into account

One reason to take a look at mintMONGOOSE as a jewelry subscription box is the fact that you get some say-so over what they send you. Do you prefer pieces that are gold-tone, silver-tone, rose gold-tone... or would you enjoy being surprised every month? Would you like earrings or not? It's nice to have an option that takes your preferences into consideration.

This jewelry subscription box has the most reviews we've ever seen, coming in with nearly 1,300 ratings from customers. And, according to Cratejoy, those average out to nearly a perfect 5 stars. However, we think it's important to point out that all but one of those reviews were left more than two years ago. That's a bit of a red flag when a jewelry subscription has hundreds of reviews in the past, but virtually nothing current. (And the one semi-recent one said they didn't get their box at the holidays, with no response from the mintMONGOOSE team.)

Better than average, but try it for a month

Creating a Brilliant Box gives you access to your own personal jewelry stylist. You'll work with Champaign Jewelers' "Sparkle Squad” to tell them what you like and what you don't. Big fan of rose gold? Prefer silver/platinum to yellow gold? Love rubies but hate emeralds? Has earned the love of a loyal clientele

There really isn't any feedback for the Brilliant Box, but we found lots of love for the team at Champaign Jewelers. One customer described the "Sparkle Squad” as "helpful, creative, and positive.” Another described her collection of diamonds, sapphires, and amethyst that came from purchases happily made over 15 years. We have no doubt that your purchase at any tier will be carefully curated and exceed your expectations, based on client feedback for the jewelry store alone.

No longer available as a traditional subscription

However, here's the catch: we finally heard back from Champaign Jewelers, and the Brilliant Box is no longer being offered as a subscription *cue sad trumpets*. You can absolutely work with the "Sparkle Squad” to pick out jewelry in line with those tiers we described, and they're happy to keep things set aside for future gift-giving (for example, you select four pieces to give to someone special, and they'll send them out according to the timeframe you prefer). But, this is no longer a true subscription, despite still being advertised as such on the jeweler's website.

Highly-rated jeweler but a non-existent subscription

We still give Champaign Jewelers a good rating, mostly because the team behind it is absolutely fantastic at what they do, and they can help you create something very similar to a subscription if that's what you're hoping for. It's just going to be a lot more hands-on than a set-it-and-forget-it membership like the other options on our list. You'll be really happy if you work with the Brilliant Box "Sparkle Squad”, but we can't rank them high on our list of jewelry subscription boxes since, well, they're really not doing that anymore.

How does it work? You'll pay $21 per month to have three items sent to you. Wear or use them for as long as you like; you'll be billed $21 each month whether you return them or continue to rent them. You can always swap any of the pieces that aren't to your liking, and the shipping is free both ways.

Detailed style profile guides what you get

We can hear you asking, "How will Rocksbox know what I like?” Easily enough: they give you the chance to build your "style profile”, making it more likely that anything you get is going to be a hit. You can tell Rockbox if you like gold, silver, or rose gold tones (or all of them!), whether or not you want necklaces/bracelets/earrings/rings and which styles you like most (statement pieces, charms, delicate, and so on), and which trends you'd like to try (such as bracelet stacks or "ear party”). There's even a box where you can tell your stylist about any colors or designers you dislike, if you have any metal allergies, or even if you've got an upcoming event where you'd like something amazing to wear.

Another way that Rocksbox finds out what jewelry catches your attention is if you add items to your wishlist. No charge for minor damage/wear

What if something happens to the jewelry as you try it out? Rocksbox will cover "at its sole discretion” any slight damage or wear, like a lost earring back or a stone falling out. Your monthly rental fee can be used towards purchasing any piece you wind up loving (or losing...). As you browse jewelry pieces on the site, pay attention to the member price if you want to avoid anything over a certain price point.

Reputation is not good

Unfortunately, Rocksbox doesn't have the reputation we would expect from a jewelry subscription box backed by a big brand family like Signet Jewelers (who does have an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau). In one place we looked, the 1-star ratings for Rocksbox significantly outnumbered the 5-star ones. Some of the comments that stood out to us included "overpriced, mostly used junk”, "I can't believe they wanted me to pay that much for a hair clip I could get on Shein for so much less”, "costume jewelry with a semi precious price tag”, and "makes it as difficult as possible to cancel your membership”. People described being pressured to buy items that came as rentals, and getting the impression that Rocksbox really doesn't want to be used primarily as a rental service (despite being set up that way).

Not worth the money

It's obvious why Rocksbox earns a lower rating from us. It's sad, really, because the concept has a lot of potential: try something new, see if it's fabulous enough to keep, and get it at a discount! But, as you can see, Rocksbox isn't doing a great job of delivering on what it offers, and you're not necessarily going to want to keep anything they send you. Plus, you run the risk of something getting lost during your trial period. It'll be much less of a headache to subscribe to a more traditional jewelry plan (and fortunately, there are some great ones higher up on our list). We don't recommend even trying Rocksbox.

Cate & Chloe offers a VIP Jewelry Subscription Box with 3 pieces of jewelry in every delivery. You'll get an assortment of necklaces, bracelets, and/or earrings each time you receive a new box. This is definitely costume jewelry with a heavy emphasis on sparkly diamond-type designs.

3 pieces per month for about $60

At $59.99 per month, you'll be paying about $20 per item in your subscription. Shipping is included in each month's price. You can save a little if you choose a prepaid Cate & Chloe membership, paying $298.98 for a 6-month plan and $478.92 for a full year. Boxes ship out on the 28th of the month, so keep that in mind if you're trying to think ahead for a special occasion (or simply keeping an eye on your monthly budget).

Quality is lacking

We're a little on the fence regarding the quality of the jewelry offered by Cate & Chloe. While you can browse the shop and see some pieces (which we would assume might be included in a subscription box) that have tons of 5-star ratings, we also saw mentions both on the site and elsewhere online that said the jewelry looks and feels like cheap plastic, it fell apart after just one or two wearings, you get the idea. (That tracks with some typos we spotted, like "stunning jewel's you'll receive”: not exactly a haute couture experience here!)

Customer service isn't very responsive

Cate & Chloe falls apart even more for us when it comes to customer service. We had a question that should be pretty easy to answer: "Many of the photos show subscription boxes that include makeup items, but I don't see anything about makeup in the description of the jewelry membership. Can you tell me more about that?” However, it took nearly 3 days for the support team to respond via email (evidently makeup used to be included, but they haven't updated the images or the reviews to reflect that). And that lines up with what we read in some customer reviews: people received earrings with bent posts and tried to get a hold of someone at Cate & Chloe to get an exchange, but never heard anything back. There's no toll-free number you can use, either. You might have some luck if you try reaching out on the company's social media channels, which are pretty active, but don't hold your breath.

Pay no attention to the (wo)man behind the curtain

We also don't think that Cate & Chloe is being super upfront about who they are. If you read the "origin story” on the website, it's pretty vague with references to "the visionaries” behind the company but not really saying anything about them as individuals. We imagine that we're supposed to look at the photo of the two women, picture them to be Cate & Chloe themselves, and assume that's their very own backstory. We have similar questions with the claims of being "conflict-free” (is that really hard to do when you're not actually selling conflict-possible items like actual diamonds?) or having a contact address that googles out to be affiliated with a bra company, a branding/design agency, and even an electrical engineer.

Not a jewelry subscription box we recommend

We give Cate & Chloe's jewelry subscription box a below-average rating. The customer service feels practically nonexistent, and we definitely don't see anything in previous boxes that has the "$180 retail value” they advertise. You can get a better value for your money with one of the higher-ranked jewelry subscriptions on our list, because this cheap costume jewelry will likely leave you disappointed.
