You can try some lessons without creating an account
One thing we genuinely appreciated during our review is how easy Mondly makes it to preview the lessons. We didn't even have to create an account to try the first Korean exercises, which is a refreshing change compared to platforms that demand your email (or credit card) before you see anything. The early "Hello" lessons are simple and beginner-friendly. You'll start by matching words with images and gradually move into short phrases. Mondly also lets you toggle between romanized Korean and Hangeul, which can help ease the transition into learning the Korean alphabet.
Lessons focus on vocabulary more than grammar
Mondly organizes its lessons around everyday themes like family, travel, and daily life. However, the platform doesn't spend much time explaining why Korean works the way it does. Grammar explanations are minimal, and cultural context is mostly absent. In general, the content feels fairly standardized across languages, as if the same generic Mondly lesson template was simply adapted for Korean. Don't expect culture-focused lessons on K-pop, K-dramas, or other uniquely Korean topics either.
Premium unlocks the flashy extras
Mondly's most interesting tools - like its AI chatbot and augmented reality conversation practice - are locked behind a paid subscription. Those features are meant to help simulate conversations and make learning feel more interactive, and you can usually access at least one lesson to take the tools for a spin. However, during our testing we ran into some technical hiccups. For example, when we tried to preview the chatbot feature on desktop, the interface asked us to "tap and hold" to record our voice - but that interaction didn't actually work on a laptop. Glitches like that made the experience feel less polished than we expected, and they highlighted the fact that Mondly is designed to be used primarily as a smartphone/tablet app.
Pricing is fairly typical - but refunds aren't
Mondly Premium pricing at the time of our review was $12.90 per month or $61.92 per year. Interestingly, the annual plan cost the same whether you subscribed to Korean alone or to all 33 Mondly languages, which feels a little gimmicky but does mean you can explore other languages at no extra cost. What's concerning is Mondly's lack of a refund policy. Once you pay for a subscription or lifetime access deal, the company makes it very clear that refunds are not offered.
Reputation leaves something to be desired
Mondly's reputation is mixed at best. On Trustpilot, the platform has a 2.7-star average across nearly 800 reviews. Less than half of reviewers give it five stars, while more than a quarter give it the lowest possible rating. Many complaints revolve around billing issues, including unexpected subscription renewals or difficulties canceling accounts. That doesn't necessarily mean every user will have a bad experience - but it's enough of a pattern that we'd recommend proceeding carefully.
