On the Personalabs website

Personalabs is a privately owned healthcare service offering medical testing and telehealth all in one place. Established in 2006, the company collaborates with Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp to get you localized lab testing. Dispensing with the need for mail-delivered kits, Personalabs promptly sends an email post-test purchase. This email contains a printable doctor's order from Personalabs, which is presented to a local lab technician when you go into your local lab. Currently, Personalabs has partnerships with over 2,300 testing centers.

400+ tests across the US

Personalabs has over 400 tests available across 21 categories with lab testing sites across the United States (excluding residents of New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island). Navigating through their website shows categories including allergies, autoimmune disorders, cancer screenings, liver function, hormonal assessments, pregnancy and fertility tests, STD evaluations, weight management assessments, fitness evaluations, and more.

All the info you need for each test

Each test listed on Personalabs' website is accompanied by a description delineating the purpose of the test, its target audience, any special instructions (such as fasting requirements before blood sampling), and the estimated time for result turnaround. While some tests may take between 2 to 10 business days for results, the majority offer results within a 24-48 hour window.

Prices from $41 to $1,722 per test

The prices at Personalabs aren't the most budget-friendly. While some tests, like the Hemoglobin A1c Blood Test, cost just $41, others are in the high hundreds (or thousands). You can choose between two labs when you want to buy a test: Quest or Labcorp. Usually, Labcorp is the most expensive with one test, "Allergen Profile for AZ, ID and UT (mountains), CO, NM, WY Blood Test" costing a whopping $1,722. The Quest price for the same test was $559. So, you can find a cheaper option even within the tests offered on this site, but it's still much higher pricing than we saw at some of Personalabs' competitors.

Best Lab Testing Services

One week for a refund

In terms of refunds, you have a one-week window to cancel your lab tests post-purchase to receive a refund. At the time of cancellation, you'll see a $15 deduction from your total refund to cover the cost of the doctor's order and processing. Beyond this period, unused tests are automatically credited back to the customer's account (meaning you can only use the credit to buy something else from Personalabs), albeit with a $15 fee deducted. All tests remain valid for six months from the date of purchase.

Solid reputation for easy tests

Currently, Personalabs holds an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau, and its reputation with customers is pretty solid. Among several review sites, Personalabs has an average rating of 4 stars. Customers have high praise for Personalabs' user-friendliness and the ease of ordering and taking the tests. While there are a handful of complaints about customer service, these are much fewer than the positive comments and don't offer any specifics as to why the customer service wasn't ideal.

Tons of tests, but a little pricey

While Personalabs presents an extensive test menu, the pricing may not be ideal for some customers, especially those without insurance. For this reason, Personalabs ranks a little lower than its less expensive competitors, but beyond that, it's definitely a testing site worth checking out. With 400+ tests to choose from, you'll be able to find what you need here.

Lab Testing Service FAQ

Can I really order tests directly from the lab?
Yes! Whether you're looking for a basic metabolic panel, drug testing for a family member you suspect is using, or virtually any other type of lab testing, you can get it directly through an online service. You don't have to go to your doctor (and pay a copay) first!
Can I use my insurance to pay for lab testing?
Not usually. These services keep prices low by working directly with consumers, so you'll typically have to pay out of pocket. But, when you add up what you'd spend for a copay on a doctor visit and any deductibles on your insurance plan, it may be less expensive to use a lab testing service even if you have coverage.
Why do people order lab testing on their own instead of going through their doctor?
There are a variety of reasons that people take advantage of online lab testing services. For those who don't have medical insurance, these providers give them access to valuable health information they might not be able to get elsewhere. Also, some consumers have privacy concerns about having their test results tied to their medical record at their PCP's office and prefer the relative anonymity of using an independent lab testing service.
Is it expensive to buy lab tests?
That depends on the test you select. However, buying your tests directly from a lab service will almost always be less expensive than going through your doctor - unless you have really comprehensive medical insurance.
What kinds of tests can I get?
Practically any test your physician could order. Some of the most popular lab tests include Comprehensive Metabolic Panel, CBC (including Differential and Platelets), COVID-19 Antibodies, Hemoglobin A1C/Insulin/Glucose, and Urinalysis. If you're looking for drug testing, you'll find kits for everything from alcohol and tobacco to cocaine and marijuana use.
Do I have to collect my own samples?
That depends on how the test is administered. If it's a hair or saliva test, yes: you'll collect the sample at home and send it in directly to the laboratory. On the other hand, if it's a blood test, you'll be directed to select a collection facility near you: very likely the same lab network your doctor would refer you to.
How are my results delivered?
Most lab testing services deliver your results through a secure online portal or dashboard. You'll get an email letting you know when your results are ready to be viewed; your test results generally include an explanation and sometimes a PDF that you can share with your healthcare provider if you choose to do so. Results are often available within 1-3 business days of being received (or drawn at the lab), though more complex testing panels may require extra time.
Are online lab testing services legitimate?
Absolutely! Thousands of Americans use self-directed lab testing services every week. For extra peace of mind, check the lab's listing with the Better Business Bureau and look at customer reviews before you select the lab you'll use.
