Nix is a 2-in-1 lice product to kill head lice and eggs as well as super lice. Included in their line of products is a shampoo, egg removal comb, lice killing creme rinse, and a lice and bed bug killing spray for home use, bedding, and furniture. We would like to see some background information about Nix, but unfortunately they don't provide much about themselves as far as when they were established, how they came to be, or what their overall goals are as a company.
Ultra solution
There are three main options for purchasing Nix's lice-removal products. The first is to buy their 3.4 fl oz bottle Nix Ultra solution that comes with a professional nit comb for $17.44. To use, customers ages 2 and older should cover their dry head of hair and scalp in the solution and let it sit for 10 minutes. Next, they should wash their hair with regular shampoo (avoid conditioner), and then towel dry. The third step is to part hair into four sections and use the included lice removal comb to carefully comb through all of the hair, wiping dead lice onto a clean tissue or dry paper towel. After 7 days, hair should be rechecked and steps 1-3 need to be repeated if any lice are still present.
Avoid if allergic to silicone
The only two ingredients listed for Nix's Ultra product are dimethicone and C12-20 isoparaffin. This is essentially mineral oil and silicone used to smother lice, so it's recommended that if customers have sensitivities to either of those things, Nix Ultra should be avoided.
Use the shampoo if you prefer
Another option from Nix is their Ultra shampoo that comes in a 4 oz bottle with a lice removal comb for $18.88. This can be used on children ages 1 and up. There aren't a lot of details about the shampoo and it appears that the instructions for use are exactly the same as the application process for the Ultra solution. The only difference here is that you don't need to use another shampoo after you rinse out Nix. The ingredients here are fragrance, laureth 4, mineral oil, MIPA laureth, sulfate, and propylene glycol.
Ultra solution and home protection spray combo
Last but not least, you could purchase Nix's lice removal kit that includes the Ultra solution, nit comb, and a 5 fl oz lice killing spray to use around your home. The cost for this is $22.22. The lice killing spray is effective on bedding and furniture and lasts up to 4 weeks. It's not safe for use on humans, even though its ingredients closely resemble the Ultra solution that you can use on your head. The formula consists of permethrin, dimethicone, and mineral oil.
Non-returnable
Nix is not eligible for returns and does not include a satisfaction guarantee. Your only hope of getting your money back after you've purchased a product from them is if it arrives damaged or defective. Once you decide to buy a Nix product, you're stuck with it whether it works for you or not.
Which product is best?
As far as the Nix shampoo and solution go, we don't feel like the company has done a good job of helping customers understand why one or the other is a better option. What's the difference? How do we decide which one will be more effective? If you want to be on the safe side, you can't go wrong using both of them together, but it doesn't seem necessary. We also wish Nix would give a more thorough explanation of how their product works to kill lice and how far a bottle goes. If you have long or thick hair, it seems like you might need more than one bottle, but they don't give any information about this.
High customer ratings
The only reassurance we really have with Nix is that their customer reviews are quite high. They have over 5,600 people who have left feedback about their experience using the formulas and a lot of people say this is the only thing that works for them. This could be since Nix is not a homeopathic remedy and is a little more aggressive on the lice. For some people this is a relief, while others want to stick with more natural ingredients on themselves and their children. The Better Business Bureau does not have a rating for Nix, but we trust that this is a reputable and reliable product if you aren't worried about allergic reactions or sensitivities to the ingredients.
No one wants to face the nuisance of having lice, but unfortunately it's a common problem, especially among kids. These pesky, tiny, six-legged insects cling to the scalp and neck to feed on human blood (rude, right?) and cause an estimated 6 - 12 million infestations yearly. Contracting lice has nothing to do with cleanliness or hygiene, but rather it spreads easily from person to person.
Lice can be picked up at school, during a sports activity, on a playground, at a friend's house, or anywhere that head-to-head contact might occur. You or your child might have lice if you're suffering from an itchy, irritated scalp. Scratching at the lice can cause infections, so it's important to take care of it as soon as possible.
Luckily, head lice is generally not dangerous and doesn't spread diseases, but it is extremely annoying and can take quite a bit of effort to get rid of. It will likely take at least a few days to eliminate the lice completely.
Aside from doing a deep clean of your house, bedding, towels, stuffed animals, clothing, and anything else that comes in contact with the lice, there are quite a few proven products that can be purchased over-the-counter to gently and effectively kick those nasty bugs to the curb. Although some people try to use natural remedies like vinegar, mayonnaise, or olive oil, they aren't as strong as products engineered to fight lice, and you may end up dealing with more lice nits (white lice eggs that attach to your hair) that hatch later on.
For best results, purchase a highly-rated product and apply it based on the included directions. Check your hair every 8-12 hours to monitor the reduction of active lice. You may need to switch products if it doesn't seem to be working. Expect to use multiple applications of the lice product to make sure that any newly-hatched lice are killed before they create a re-infestation that makes you have to restart the whole process. Try to be patient and know that although it may take some time, you can eliminate lice completely and get back to your normal routine.
