Most people think of power tools, the smell of wood, and the color orange when they think about Home Depot. In addition to supplying nearly everything you could ever need for a home update or remodel, they also have a wide variety of things like furniture, decor, and of course, light bulbs. This place might be your best friend or your worst enemy, depending on how many trips back and forth you've taken to the store and how well your project is going. But no matter how you spin it, Home Depot will always have everything you need and their inventory of over 4,800 light bulbs is a small testament to this.

Find a quick fix

Since we live in a time when we can get things almost instantly from an online order, it's nice that Home Depot has a "Free 1-2 day delivery” option and a "Same-day delivery” option. You might want to start there with narrowing down your results. There are tons of other light bulb categories such as light bulb type, review rating, brand, price, lighting technology, features, shape code, base type, wattage, color temperature, and so much more. It's likely that there are more filter features than you could possibly need. But if you're looking for a bunch of different light bulb types, Home Depot's site will help you get what you need quickly.

Helpful feedback from other buyers

It's so easy to navigate Home Depot's site. Everything is nicely organized and if you know exactly what you need, you can put it into the search function and find it right away. Since this is such a popular store, you'll find thousands of reviews on most products, even their light bulbs. They also have tons of Q&A comments from other customers who have asked and answered specific questions about the item. We saw people asking about which lights are compatible with certain bulbs, where to buy dimmer switches for them, if the bulbs were safe in an enclosed fixture, if they could be used outdoors, and so many other relevant questions.

Buy more, save more

For the sake of simplicity, we were shopping at Home Depot for basic 60-watt equivalent LED dimmable light bulbs. We found a 4-pack for $11.48, which was very reasonable. An 8-pack of these light bulbs in a non-dimmable option was just $13.98. At the time of this review, Home Depot was doing a "Buy More, Save More” event on some items. So the more light bulbs we added to our cart, the higher the percentage of savings that was taken off our total.

Lightning fast delivery

Most items from Home Depot ship free with a $45 purchase. However, the company boasts that over 2 million items in their inventory are eligible for free shipping by themselves. We found tons of light bulbs for under $20 that qualified for free delivery. Home Depot knows that their store caters to people who are urgently working on projects and home repairs and we love that they've made it so easy to get your light bulbs as fast and affordably as possible.

Simple, generous return policy

Home Depot's return policy could not be clearer or easier. They state, "Simply return purchases for free in-store or by mail. Most items can be returned within 90 days.” We appreciate this extra return window since sometimes you buy a lot of product for a project and end up not needing all of it. Or in the case of light bulbs, you might put in a big order and find that you mistakenly purchased the wrong ones. Home Depot aims to make returns low-stress by giving you a generous 90 days and allowing it all to be done for free.

Fabulous company

It was no surprise to see that Home Depot has an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have great ratings on their individual products and from customers about their overall shopping experiences. Home Depot is heavily relied on by many people and they are experts in products for home projects. You can feel safe and reassured that shopping here will be a good experience.

Loyal fans

How could we not give Home Depot our highest rating? In all our years of shopping here, they've never let us down (based on our personal experiences). There's no such thing as a perfect company, but Home Depot has good prices, an unbeatable selection, great delivery options, and an awesome customer service team of people who are knowledgeable and truly love their jobs. For light bulbs and any other home updating needs, we highly recommend Home Depot.

What Are the Best Places to Buy Light Bulbs Online?

Light bulbs are one of those things we take for granted. Without them, life would be much more difficult. When a lightbulb goes out, it's quite annoying. If you don't have a replacement on hand, you'll be either trying to navigate through a dark room until you get around to replacing your light or just have to adapt to a more dim environment.

Since lightbulbs are such a simple thing, you might find yourself a bit surprised at how many options there are online. They come in all different shapes, levels of brightness, and colors. If you want to go for a more white light, it will feel more like a natural outdoorsy environment. If you go for a yellower tone, it warms up a space, making you want to cozy up around a piping-hot meal with loved ones. As our eyes differentiate different light throughout the day, it can change our mood and energy levels.

Light Bulb Store FAQ

Light bulbs are often characterized by how they produce light. For example, you'll find LED, halogen, incandescent and CFL varieties. Light bulbs also differ by their shape and the design of their base; when shopping for them, you'll need to make sure you get the right size and type to fit the light fixture.
The wattage of a light bulb tells you how much energy it will use: higher watts equals more energy needed. Just because a bulb is high in watts doesn't necessarily mean it will be brighter: LED bulbs, for instance, are lower in wattage but are often brighter than their incandescent counterparts.
That's not usually a good idea. You could cause your light fixture to overheat - and possibly catch fire! If you're trying to get a brighter light effect, consider switching to an LED bulb: you can get more lumens even at a much lower-than-recommended wattage.
Light bulbs can emit light that is "warm”, which is more of a yellow cast, or "cool”, which gives a whiter effect. You may want a warmer light for certain activities or times of day, and a whiter light under other conditions. Mostly, however, it comes down to personal preference.
Lumens measure the amount of visible light emitted by your bulbs. Light bulbs with a higher lumen count give off more light.
That depends on many factors, particularly the way the light bulb is used and its type. Your refrigerator bulb could last many years (unless you spend a lot of time with the door open, browsing the contents!), while your favorite reading lamp may burn out the bulb in a few months. Incandescent bulbs have a much shorter "life” than halogen bulbs, and both of those pale in comparison to LED bulbs.
If you've ever gone to the store just to buy a bulb to replace one that burned out, but you left frustrated because they didn't have the kind you needed, you already know the reason why many people shop online for their lighting needs! Online retailers of light bulbs have a much better available selection, especially when it comes to specialty bulbs or hard-to-find sizes. You'll often get them at lower prices than brick-and-mortar stores', and many times the shipping is free.
Most light bulb retailers understand that matching a bulb in your hand to one sold online isn't always an easy task. Return policies tend to be very customer-friendly, but check the specifics before you click "buy now”, especially if you're not sure you've got the right replacement light bulb in your cart.

Continued from above...

In addition to basic, indoor light bulbs, you should also consider your need for any outdoor lighting for floodlights around your home, a porch light, or even your Christmas lights. It always seems that when one lightbulb goes out, a bunch of others do at the same time, so keeping a list of the types of lighting throughout and around your home and the bulbs you use is a good idea for placing a big order.

If you're ordering light bulbs for some light fixtures around your house you might as well get them in bulk. Unless you're replacing a chandelier's bulbs on a high, vaulted ceiling, you'll likely be able to get the job done in a matter of seconds. You'll thank yourself for having extras when you need them. You'll probably also save on shipping this way and with how long light bulbs last these days, you probably won't need to put in another order for a few years.

Shopping online gives you the ability to compare the prices of light bulbs, have them shipped straight to your house, and get everything you need for your home in one place. You have access to the best products on the market without having to leave your couch.

When deciding where to buy light bulbs online, take the following things into consideration:

  • Selection. Does the company supply all the types of light bulbs you need for the interior and exterior of your home? Think canned lighting, chandeliers, lamps, fridge lights, your outdoor eaves, porch lights, and more. Ideally you'll want to be able to place a single order and get everything you need.
  • Pricing. Light bulbs shouldn't break the bank, but you'll still want to get as much bang for your buck as possible. Does the company offer any good sales or buy-one-get-one deals? How about free shipping?
  • Return policy. There's always a chance that you'll order the wrong type or size of light bulb. If so, no worries. If you're shopping at a store that has at least a 30-day return policy, you can easily switch out the ones you bought for the ones you need. Check if you'll have to pay for return shipping or if they have a retail location near you that offers free returns.
