Do doers really get more done with The Home Depot? Yes they do! Inventory of more than 80,000 light fixtures? Check. Great reputation? Check. Easy-to-shop website with handy delivery and in-store pickup options? Check. Whatever you've got in mind for your lighting project, Home Depot isn't exaggerating when they say you can do it and they can help.
No fuss no muss website
There's nothing fancy or formal about Home Depot's main lighting page: just plenty of direct links to get-r-done. Don't get us wrong: there's no shortage (ha... haha... see what we did there?) of links for getting smart lights or integrated LED fixtures or browsing what's trending. But, generally speaking, you click on the picture for the type of light fixture you have in mind and away you go. Alternately, you can browse products by room or style, or go for the long route and select "Shop All Lighting" . (We don't recommend that option unless you want to pick through more than 80,000 items that include brackets, bulbs, and other fixture accessories.)
Let's narrow it down
Filters will be your best friend when you're hunting for the perfect light fixture among so many tens of thousands of possibilities. You may already have a style in mind, like classic or farmhouse, a brand that's earned your loyalty, or some other criteria that would make it the "just right" fit for your decor. How about light fixtures that are in stock today that you can order online and go pick up right away? Or that are available with free two-day delivery? Those are all options you'll find in the filters here.
Every imaginable product detail
Anything you could possibly want to know about a light fixture is displayed on its product page at Home Depot. Thumbnail images in your matching results list will tell you at a glance what color options you have, whether it's available locally for pickup, how many people have "favorited" it to see later, and how many stars it averages from other shoppers. More info awaits when you click on a fixture that catches your attention, like a detailed product overview and all of the technical specs you might need to know if it'll work where you plan to install it.
Luxury lighting too? Yes!
When it comes to light fixtures, chandeliers are our favorite way to see just how extravagant the options are. Would you be surprised to know that Home Depot sells clear crystal chandeliers for $13,000 and blown glass chandeliers for $9,900? Those larger items didn't qualify for free ship-to-home, but in-store pickup was available within two weeks at no cost. (Bonus: Home Depot said they had more than one they could send!)
Professional installation referrals available
Need help from a professional to get your light fixture done right? No sweat. Check the box for "Add Pro Referral" on the product page or during checkout. You'll be contacted by up to three Home Depot partners near you; it's up to you to work out the details and choose the installer you prefer.
No one beats this return policy
There are a lot of first-rate light fixture retailers to choose from. Home Depot slides into our first-place ranking largely due to their excellent return policy. True, there's at least one other store that matches their 90-day timeframe, but on all items that don't come with a large-item surcharge, Home Depot will pay the costs for the return shipping. Print your label from their website and off it goes, with no deduction from your refund. You can still return your light fixture to a store near you, though.
Starting with the Better Business Bureau's accreditation and "A+" rating and continuing on to the thousands of shoppers who are completely loyal to the Home Depot brand, this store gets all the warm fuzzies. The light fixtures themselves may have mixed reviews, but anything that Home Depot customer service reps can do to help, rest assured that they will.
Start at Home Depot for light fixtures
You've got a lot of choices when shopping for your home improvement needs, including lighting. Why not start with the best? Not only can you get the fixtures you want, but you can fill your online cart with everything else required to take all of those projects off your honey-do list once and for all. Ample selection, first-rate customer service, and stress-free in-store pickup and returns are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to compelling reasons to shop Home Depot first. They earn our highest recommendation.
For more than four decades, Lamps Plus has operated under the idea that "in the right light, home is a place to truly love" . You may be familiar with this retailer if you live in the western United States where they have brick-and-mortar stores, but anyone can shop for light fixtures at this fantastic online shop and get excellent selection, quality and service.
Homepage has it all
From the homepage to specific product pages, Lamps Plus takes the stress out of buying light fixtures with an intuitive, cleanly-designed website. Already know what kind of lights you need? Click on the links at the top to see their selection of Chandeliers, Ceiling Lights, Wall Lights, Outdoor Lights or Ceiling Fans. You can also scroll down and see their top home lighting categories, like sconces or pendants, flip through their online Lighting and Decor catalog, or get decorating inspiration for a particular room in your home.
More than 10,000 light fixtures
Lamps Plus' selection of light fixtures isn't as vast as some of their rivals - but honestly, when you're talking about an inventory of 14,000 (Lamps Plus) vs. one of 50,000 or more (some competitors), is that even a concern? Not for us. If you can't find something you like in Lamps Plus' 2,700+ ceiling lights, 6,000+ chandeliers, or thousands of ceiling fans, wall lights and outdoor lights, you've likely got something in mind that just hasn't been made yet! (And, if that's the case, we encourage you to browse specifically in the "Luxury Lighting" category at the top of the page: Swarovski crystals, Hubbardton Forge, and Schonbek chandeliers, oh my!)
Use filters to your advantage
Save yourself time and use the filters to find the lighting you want. Shape, finish, size, price, style and color are the default options, and there are even more if you click on the "more filters" option (helpfully named, right?). You may want to shop by a particular brand, by the light fixtures with the highest customer ratings, or by products currently on sale. Another cool feature is the "More Like This" button on each thumbnail product in your matching results, perfect for those times when you see something that's "close but not quite" .
Get lighting expertise - free
When you buy your light fixtures from an expert retailer like Lamps Plus, you get the advantage of professional assistance. Pop open a live chat box if you have a quick question, or go so far as to set up an appointment with their online lighting design service: their experts will help you with any home projects you're considering, all at no charge. Not ready to talk with someone but still need some input? Choose "View in Your Room" under any light fixture's images on the product page, upload a photo of the room you've got in mind (or use their "sample room" ), adjust the scale and position and voila!
No shortage of discounts and other savings here
A great reason to get your light fixtures from Lamps Plus is their array of shopper-friendly perks. How about a "new homeowner" coupon that saves you $15 off an order of $50+? Find that at the bottom of the site. You'll also get free shipping on all orders over $49, no code necessary, and a 120% price match guarantee if you happen to find your light fixture sold for less by a Lamps Plus competitor.
Generous 60-day return policy
And, this retailer just keeps on giving. They offer one of the best return policies out of all the stores we evaluated: 60 days from the date of purchase, and they'll even pay the return delivery fees. That's pretty uncommon with most online retailers of light fixtures: the only other ones that we've found tend to be the big-box home improvement stores.
Customers love this store
Shopper feedback for Lamps Plus is very positive. More than 10,000 people give the store a 5-star review, citing phenomenal customer service (especially with returns and refunds), products that are as-advertised (or even better than expected!), and representatives who have gone the extra mile to help with all things related to light fixtures. The Better Business Bureau agrees, listing Lamps Plus as an accredited, "A+" company.
Excellent choice for buying light fixtures
Changing the lighting in your home can feel daunting sometimes: can you be sure you're getting something that will look right while staying within your budget? Lamps Plus puts everything you need at your disposal, with as much or as little help as you prefer, customer-friendly policies, and a no-stress return policy that's hard to beat. We recommend that you put Lamps Plus near the top of the list when deciding where to buy your light fixtures.
It's no surprise that Lowe's is a go-to for shoppers looking for light fixtures. The home improvement store serves a staggering 20 million customers per week, and their brick-and-mortar stores employ over 300,000 people. Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021, Lowe's has a lighting inventory you would expect from a store with such a long history, with more than 40,000 fixtures to consider.
Straightforward shopping here
Lowe's main page for Lighting & Ceiling Fans couldn't be more direct. Browse trendsetting styles, click on the image for the specific type of light fixture you need, get inspired by Lowe's lighting guide, or check out the smart home options for illuminating your home. Once you've chosen a category, you can typically shop by style or view all. Filters will be the best way to save yourself time, to rule out any light fixtures in a color, size, style or price range that won't fit your expectations.
Abundant product details
What do you want to know about a light fixture? Chances are, Lowe's will come right out and tell you in the product descriptions. Even the abbreviated versions shown in your product matches will give you plenty to go on, including lots of customer reviews: one of the benefits of shopping with a big-name retailer. Those shopper ratings often come with real-world photos of how the fixtures look in homes like yours.
Fancy is still on the menu
While Lowe's doesn't go to the upper-end extremes that we've seen with some light fixture retailers, you can still get some luxe looks here. How about a $17,000 polished chrome transitional chandelier by PLC Lighting or a $7500 Dragonfly bronze pendant by Troy Lighting? Some of these more unusual light fixtures were displayed yet unavailable during our most recent shopping trip here, and Lowe's lets you request to be notified when such items come back in stock.
Easy online ordering with in-store pickup or free delivery
Let's face it: sometimes that DIY urge strikes and you want to tackle that project right now... but it's midnight. Lowe's lets you shop online 24/7 and order the light fixture you want for pickup: just be sure to check the box that says "Free Store Pickup" and verify that the selected retail location is the one where you want to get it. Each light fixture has an indicator of how many are in stock at any given store location. Of course, if you're not in a rush, you can benefit from Lowe's free delivery on orders of $45 and up.
Get installation through an independent partner contractor
Maybe you're like us and you want to avoid the whole installation part of getting new lighting. Lowe's has you covered. You'll find your options both during the checkout process and on the lighting homepage. Lowe's partners with independent contractors in the lower 48 United States, so naturally installation will be subject to availability. But, if you've got it in your area, it saves you the step of having to find a vetted, skilled professional to take care of it for you.
Terrific customer service
Lowe's is known for being very customer-centric. You'll see that in their 90-day return policy, which ties for first place in terms of generosity. However, if you return your light fixture by mail instead of in person, be prepared to pay for the return shipping costs. (It's probably better to take it to a retail location nearby.) Lowe's is recognized as an accredited, "A+" rated retailer by the Better Business Bureau, and most shoppers have nothing but love for the company.
"Improving Home Improvement"
Lowe's can be trusted to help you with your next project that involves light fixtures. From functional to fashionable, traditional to trendy, their inventory has plenty to discover. And, it goes without saying that you can't beat the convenience of a 90-day return policy, free shipping on most orders, and hassle-free in-store pickup and return options. Count on Lowe's for your lighting and general home improvement needs.
1 Stop Lighting is the flagship brand in the Homeclick Group, which also includes Patio Products USA, Bailey Street Home, and several other companies. In business since 2003 and headquartered in Sacramento, this retailer offers ALA-trained and certified product experts to help you make the right decision on your light fixture purchase.
Not sure what you're looking for? The 1 Stop Lighting online store can give you plenty of ideas. We particularly liked the current year's trending styles section (especially for those of us not savvy enough to know what's hot in light fixtures at the moment!). Another helpful section is "Shop by Room" , making it easy to envision what might work well in your kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or other area of the house. Need it quick? Just keep scrolling until you get to the "Same Day Shipping" part of the page.
Ultra-specific filters if you want them
Of course, if you already know you're looking for a chandelier, ceiling fan, wall light or any other type of fixture, you can go directly to that category and start working your way through the options. There are over 35,000 total light fixtures to choose from, so we recommend that you use the filters to narrow them down. For example, in the Chandeliers category, you can click on product images to shop by style, like Farmhouse or Urban, or keep going down the page to find the filters: brand, finish, collection, number of lights, even really specific criteria like "dark sky friendly" and "UL" rating.
Find out all the details
When you get to the product page of a light fixture you like, there will be ample information to help you decide if it's the one you want. Numerous photos, detailed specs, and customer reviews are just a few of the ways 1 Stop Lighting makes it easy to know what you're getting before you place an order. Conveniently, you can also see if the fixture is in stock and, if so, when it would probably be shipped to your zip code. Finally, if the current price is a little high for your liking, you can click on the "Get Sale Alerts" button and be notified when your preferred light fixture is available for a more wallet-friendly price.
Discounts to be had
Want extra savings? While we browsed the 1 Stop Lighting site, we were offered an "up to 25% coupon" if we signed up for their email newsletter. It seemed a little strange that they didn't come out and give us a set discount amount. Fortunately, cthere was a promotional code for 25% off at the top of the page; we didn't even need to bother with the email subscription. Also, you'll get free shipping on all orders over $49, which should include most light fixtures here.
On time delivery guaranteed
This retailer has a few more customer perks we like. You'll get price matching within 14 days of placing an order: if you find your light fixture sold somewhere else for a lower price, 1 Stop Lighting will match or beat it and refund you the difference. Plus, the company has a "delivery special" if your order isn't delivered in the number of business days you were promised at the time you made the purchase, you'll get a $25 refund. That's a breath of fresh air compared with some rivals who take your money and then switch up the shipping date from "within a week" to "maybe in a month or two" !
Be mindful of return costs on heavy items
How about returns? You'll have 30 days to get a refund on your light fixture, and in some cases 1 Stop Lighting will cover the return delivery costs. It has to be a product listed in their included manufacturers, and it doesn't apply if your light fixture was heavy enough to need freight delivery. That's important to note, because it's one of the few complaints we found about this store. Customers were expecting to have no-fee returns but wound up with hefty charges of a couple hundred dollars on the heaviest light fixtures.
High praise from most customers
Beyond that, most shoppers are thrilled with the experience here. We found thousands of five-star ratings, praising 1 Stop Lighting's unbeatable inventory, exceptionally-friendly customer service team, and super-fast delivery times. The Better Business Bureau agrees, giving the store a perfect "A+" and accreditation as well.
Solid pick for online-only shopping
Overall, 1 Stop Lighting is a great option for online-only shopping for light fixtures. While you won't get the convenience of in-store returns or same-day pickup, there are plenty of perks here that make up the difference. And, you may be able to find fixtures here that aren't available at major home improvement stores. This is one of our preferred stores for most lighting needs.
Since 2000, Bellacor has fashioned itself a pioneer in the home furnishings and lighting industry. This retailer delights in offering best-in-class, often hand-curated products from numerous designer brands, giving customers a unique look and feel to their home or office decor.
Subscribe and save
If you like the idea of saving a little on your light fixture purchase, go to the bottom of the Bellacor site and look for the box asking for your email address. While certain exclusions apply, you'll potentially save 20% on your next full-price purchase.
Browse the main page for ideas
There's a lot to see on the main page for Light Fixtures on the Bellacor site. You can get a feel for the various departments like Ceiling, Wall, or Fans and start your shopping there. We're not sure how useful the "Top Reviewed" section is: the fixtures we found there each had a single five-star review. But hey, five stars from 100% of reviewers, right? You might find it more helpful to browse by Lighting Styles, especially if you're not already aware of what a "Mid-Century Modern" or "Transitional" light fixture looks like.
Watch out for delivery timeframes
Once you've selected a category, there are lots of filters to make it easier to find what you're looking for: try finish/color, features, or style if you've got something in mind. You may also want to check out the "Lead Time" filter; we were surprised to see that there were thousands of fixtures that wouldn't ship for anywhere from 8-16 weeks! If time is of the essence - or if you, like most people, aren't willing to wait nearly four months to get your new lighting installed - choose one of the filters with a shorter lead time.
Results list shows you a good summary
As you look through your matching results, the thumbnail images and information make your shopping more efficient. At a glance, you can see if a particular light fixture is in stock, if there are any available coupon savings, and if there are any customer reviews. We didn't find a lot of shopper feedback on the products here - maybe a dozen or fewer on any given item, compared with other retailers whose light fixtures have hundreds or thousands of ratings.
Unique options you may not see anywhere else
Bellacor genuinely offers something for everyone with respect to lighting. In the Ceiling category alone, there are over 37,000 options ranging from basic recessed lights for $11 to a 20-light chandelier with gold leaf finish for an impressive price of $32,340. We wish there were a way to generate a results list just with the most unique fixtures Bellacor carries, because we spotted some pretty innovative lighting options. (On the high end, search for the Suspenders Satin Black or Constellation Satin Nickel Pendant by Sonnmean; on the under $1,000 side, try the Chicago PM series by Designers Fountain.)
Decent shipping and returns policies
Bellacor's customer policies are fairly similar to their rivals. You'll get free shipping on orders of $25+ (which includes most light fixtures, of course), a price match guarantee within 7 days of placing your order, and a 30-day return policy. The store is a little light on details for those returns; they don't specify who pays for the return shipping fees or if customers will have to pay a restocking fee. You may want to clarify that before you buy a light fixture here, especially if it's particularly heavy (and might incur freight shipping costs) or if you're not 100% sure it's what you want.
Mostly positive feedback from clients
You'll find a solid history of customer service with Bellacor. The Better Business Bureau gives the store its highest rating plus accreditation, and over 5000 customers also give it a 5-star review with lots of praise for having beautiful, one-of-a-kind light fixtures that go way beyond the mass-produced lighting found at big-box stores. On the downside, some shoppers describe orders taking a very long time to arrive (or not arriving at all) and significant delays in getting refunds.
Good option for uncommon light fixture designs
While ordinarily we might have dropped Bellacor's rating a little because of the customer feedback, the store still has a great reputation overall. And, because not everyone wants cookie-cutter light fixtures, there's definitely a place for a retailer that sells everything ranging from quintessential to quirky. We recommend that you give Bellacor a try if you want light fixtures that really stand out.
Since 2004, Lumens Light + Living has offered tens of thousands of light fixtures, fans, furniture and home decor, mostly with a focus on modern design. If you've shopped at other retailers and just haven't found that one-of-a-kind look your space needs, Lumens probably has the answer!
Online store delivers good shopping experience
Through and through, Lumens provides customers with a hassle-free way to find light fixtures. Start with the category of lighting you need, such as Architectural or Landscape, and then narrow it down further if you've already got something in mind or click on "view all" . For example, in the Ceiling Lights category, you could choose from flush mounts, drum pendants, entry and foyer lights, and so on. Finally, use the filter options on the resulting list to quickly get to the fixtures that match what you're envisioning: color, finish, shape, and so on.
Ready to ship - for real
Best of all, there's a "ready to ship" filter that can limit results to the light fixtures with the fastest delivery. That's a big plus because many of Lumens' competitors get you excited about an amazing product, only to disappoint you with a "ships in two months" notification when you get to the shopping cart! In fact, in the Chandeliers category alone, Lumens' inventory had almost 3,000 fixtures, but only 573 were designated as ready for delivery. That one filter can save you some aggravation if time is of the essence.
Use previews to select some favorites
Once you get to your matching results, you can use the thumbnail images and other info to get a good overview of each fixture, like any available size or color options, multiple photos if available, and any promotions or discounts that might be in effect. You can also click the heart to save any ones that catch your eye to a favorites list, or use the "compare" button to see any fixtures side-by-side. Some products have customer ratings, but even the ones that come up first in the "best sellers" tend to only have a couple dozen reviews. (Not as helpful as some retailers with light fixtures reviewed by hundreds or thousands of shoppers, to be honest.)
Frequent sales, discounts, and coupons
Lumens has everything, from $14 LED flush mounts to $50,000 chandeliers. You'll see lots of items on sale, and sometimes there are coupon codes at the top of the site. And, as you browse the site, you might get a pop-up discount offer to save 5% as a reward for signing up for Lumens' email list - but watch out for the excluded brands on their list. Shipping is always free on orders of at least $49, no coupon code needed.
Attentive to customer needs
Lumens is a lighting expert, and they stand at the ready to provide you with any guidance you need - before placing your order or after you get it home and need to install it! Look for the live chat button to reach out to one of their ALA-certified, US-based product specialists. You can also get in contact if you find your Lumens light fixture at a lower price elsewhere, either within 30 days of your purchase or beforehand. There are certain rules to their price match program, but Lumens encourages you to ask. That 30-day timeframe applies to returns as well.
Most shoppers are happy here
Although the BBB hasn't given Lumens accreditation status, the company does enjoy an "A+" rating there. Looking at customer feedback, the vast majority have nothing but love for Lumens, including plenty of compliments from shoppers who have used this store many times over the years. But, we found that 10% of reviews gave Lumens a rock-bottom one-star rating, citing confusing shipping times (e.g. shown as in stock at the time of the order, but then not shipping out for almost two months) and mediocre responses from customer service reps when there was a problem.
Good choice if you like modern design
Lumens is our retailer of choice for on-trend light fixtures that step outside of traditional design. We like how easy it is to quickly find items that match our mental "wish list" and especially to see only the fixtures that can be delivered quickly. Lumens isn't the right retailer for every home lighting need, but it's a trustworthy option with a lot to offer if you want the modern look.
Want to knock off all the items on your home improvement shopping list in one purchase? Wayfair is happy to oblige. Their massive online store has millions of items to choose from, including almost 100,000 light fixtures.
Never fails to have something unique - and pricey
Whenever we shop at Wayfair, it's always entertaining to look at the highest-end items in the category we're browsing. The Ceiling Lights category did not disappoint. The most expensive fixture at the time of our review was the Illumina Bola 14-Light Sputnik Modern Linear Chandelier by Meyda Tiffany. Discounted to just under $100K from a retail price of $149,500 - Hurry! Only 6 left in stock! - this piece surprisingly does not come with light bulbs. You can get plenty of information about each light fixture in Wayfair's product descriptions, including the fact that the Illumina Bola weighs a hefty 890 pounds. For a little less money - a more reasonable $59,999.99 - you could be the proud owner of the Meyda Tiffany 84" Wide Antlers 16-Light Chandelier, which definitely gives off some Disney vibes (Brave? Beauty and the Beast?) and comes in at a much more svelte 370 pounds.
No shortage of everyday options too
Unless you're buying lighting for a corporate headquarters (or a villain's lair!), you're likely looking for fixtures that aren't quite as extreme. No worries: Wayfair has nearly 100,000 options and lots of guidance to get you to the ones you'll love. On the main Lighting page, you can shop by the type (such as wall lights, ceiling fans, and so on), by room, or by Popular Picks. Some categories also offer Curated Collections, like Budget-Friendly Chandeliers or Best-Selling Pendant Lights, and you can always use the filters to find light fixtures that are the right finish or shape, or that can be delivered to your zip code with 1- or 2-day shipping.
Customer perks are just average
Wayfair is just okay when it comes to customer-friendly policies. You'll get free shipping on all orders over $35, which includes most light fixtures, and there's a 30-day return policy. However, you're on the hook for any return shipping fees, which can get spendy on heavier items.
Customer feedback is a plus
One advantage of buying from a huge-volume retailer like Wayfair is getting hundreds if not thousands of customer ratings on most items. For example, the Upper Vobster 2-Light Unique/Statement Drum by Mercury Row had almost 3000 ratings during our most recent visit to Wayfair, with an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars: not bad for an $84.99 light fixture! This retailer has an "A+" and accreditation from the BBB, though you'll find a high number of complaints filed there. That's to be expected for most big retailers, and Wayfair has done a commendable job of improving their responses to customer issues over the last few years.
Great choice for DIYers
There's nothing really wrong about buying light fixtures from Wayfair. The inventory is abundant, pricing is competitive, and shipping/returns are comparable with most other stores. The main reason we rank this retailer lower than several others is because it's no specialist in home improvement or lighting. You won't have an expert to consult if you're unsure of how well a fixture will fit, if the wiring needs to be reworked, or if any other questions arise. Of course, experienced DIY-ers won't find this to be an obstacle at all, making Wayfair a great choice for light fixtures for anyone confident in their home improvement abilities.
There aren't many online retailers of light fixtures that have as much expertise as 1 800 Lighting: the internet store of Capitol Lighting, a family-owned business that's been around for almost 100 years and that has brick-and-mortar showrooms in Florida and New Jersey.
Expert help at the ready
One big advantage that comes with this type of business is the access to knowledgeable help. Not sure if a fixture will fit in your dining room or if you've got the right wiring for a particular pair of outdoor lights? No problem! Just look at the bottom of the 1 800 Lighting website for their live chat, email, or toll-free number. The site also has a fun tool that shows you how a light fixture might look in a room: how it compares to a person's size (which you can customize to the height and *ahem* width of someone in the home), how it pairs with different types of furniture, and so on. You'll find that feature on the individual product pages for fixtures.
20% discount on your first order
1 800 Lighting offers a 20% discount on your first purchase if you sign up for their contact list. The first pop-up asked for our email address, and the second wanted our mobile number: up to you if you'd rather get texts or emails, but you can click to unsubscribe or opt out by texting "stop" at any time. Be aware that some brands are excluded from that discount, in case you want to pick a fixture first and then decide if you want to opt into that mailing list.
Straightforward, clean website
Shopping for light fixtures here is a pleasant experience. You can browse images of popular lighting categories or go directly to the linked options at the top of the site. The main lighting page also features any current sales and look galleries for gathering inspiration for your own decor. Once you've chosen a category, like Ceiling Fans or Outdoor Lights, use the filters to see what's in the inventory that matches your preferences for style, special features, bulb type, or any other criteria you already have in mind.
How long are you willing to wait?
The tricky thing about buying anything from 1 800 Lighting is availability. There's no filter that lets you see just the items that are ready for shipment. You'll find many products that ship out within a business day or two, but there are others that may show a date that's two months out (or more!). It was tedious clicking through light fixtures that we liked, only to find out we'd have to wait a very long time to get them delivered.
Free shipping...kind of
While 1 800 Lighting offers free shipping on orders of $49+, some light fixtures will incur a $65 "large item shipping surcharge" . They don't have specific criteria for which items will require that extra fee beyond "large items such as large foyer chandeliers and torchiere floor lamps" , but you can see it on the individual item pages - no nasty surprise that you'll only discover when you check out.
30-day return policy, shipping is on you
If you need to make a return, you'll have 30 days to do so. Unfortunately, the shipping cost to send it back will be deducted from your refund, and that could get expensive if your light fixture was one of those "large items" we mentioned.
Mixed reviews from customers
You'll find a variety of comments from people who have placed orders with 1 800 Lighting: some enthusiastic and others much less so. Just like availability of products, customer satisfaction here is hit-or-miss. And yet, the Better Business Bureau gives this company an "A+" rating and accreditation, which usually means that issues are being handled professionally and in a timely fashion.
Not bad, but not awesome either
As much as we love shopping with family-owned businesses, 1 800 Lighting just doesn't quite cut it compared with many other light fixture retailers. Customers want an easy-to-use website with plenty of in-stock options for their home improvement projects and a solid reputation. Unfortunately, this store only delivers lukewarm results across the board.
For over 10 years, family-owned Lights Online has been applying their 50 years of experience as a brick-and-mortar lighting specialist to their internet storefront. You'll find tens of thousands of light fixtures here, and a good customer service team at the ready if you need any guidance.
Look for discounts
When we first visited the Lights Online store, we got a pop-up offering a 15% discount for signing up for their mailing list. Be aware that some manufacturers are excluded from that savings. There were also quite a few coupon codes on some light fixtures as we browsed individual items, and a link to coupons at the bottom of the site too.
Choose a light fixture category
The easiest way to get started is by choosing the type of light fixture you're looking for from the links at the top of the site: Bath, Ceiling Fans, Chandeliers & Pendants, Ceiling, Wall, Lamps, Outdoor, or Trends. The dropdown menu will let you see specific types of lighting in each category; if you're not quite sure yet, you can choose the All link and get some ideas by browsing. It's not obvious, but on your results page you'll see two buttons for filter and sort: those can be used to see the fixtures in your price range, preferred brand, type of bulb or finish you prefer, and so on. Lights Online doesn't come out and tell you how many different light fixtures they sell in each category, but we found more than enough to keep us interested. For example, in Ceiling Fans alone, there were over 50 pages of products!
Informative but not overwhelming
There's a simplicity to product pages on Lights Online that we really appreciate. The overview, specifications, and reviews are separated by tabs: you only have to see the information you need, without having to scroll endlessly to find it. Some light fixtures have in-depth customer reviews, complete with post-installation photos and ratings of the items' quality and value.
Is it actually in stock?
And yet, our shopping experience with Lights Online was confusing at best. Many of the light fixtures that caught our attention were listed as on sale. But, when we clicked on the images to go to the product pages, most of them were out of stock. We reached out to the customer service department via live chat - and were able to reach someone right away, which is a positive - and the rep told us that while all of their in-house brands would be available, certain manufacturers had to be ordered. "But they usually come in within a few days." So, it's on sale...but you don't actually have it? That's not very straightforward.
Some customer-friendly perks worth noting
However, we can't overlook some of the good things about this store. Lights Online has a 110% price match: if you find your light fixture for less, they'll drop their pricing to be 10% less than the competitor's. You can take advantage of this prior to placing your order by reaching out to Lights Online. This store also gives you free shipping on all orders over $49, a 30-day return policy, and no shipping fees on returns unless your purchase was heavy enough to need freight delivery.
Good track record
Also, Lights Online has a solid reputation. Their Better Business Bureau listing had no complaints registered at the time of this review, and the store had earned an "A+" rating and accreditation.
Could be better
We appreciate the attention to customer service that Lights Online provides, and any company with a perfect BBB listing deserves some recognition. But, with so many light fixtures out of stock - and no way to filter products to only see the ones that are actually available - shopping this store took a lot more time than other retailers. Lights Online gets a "just okay" rating.
Light in the Box presents itself as a one-stop shop for, well, just about anything. Isn't everyone shopping for light fixtures, cosplay costumes, and a car vacuum cleaner - all at the same time? "Eclectic" is the best way to describe the inventory at this online store.
Choose a category
The easiest way to shop is to choose a category to browse, like Ceiling Lights & Fans or Chandeliers. Unlike most stores that sell light fixtures, Light in the Box doesn't give you filters to sort results by size, bulb type, or any other useful characteristics. You just have to click around and look for items that catch your eye. That's actually not a big downside, because the light fixtures here are often one-of-a-kind, in unique shapes and configurations not found in traditional lighting stores. But, we're a little suspicious of the five-star ratings on seemingly every light fixture sold here.
Figure it out yourself
Light fixtures aren't really this retailer's area of expertise, if they even have one. That leaves you on your own to choose a fixture and determine if it'll work for the space you've got in mind. There are no in-depth product guides or experts you can contact via live chat.
You'll always pay for shipping
Continuing the downward trend, this store charges for shipping - no matter what. It doesn't matter how much you order, you'll always pay for delivery. For example, on a candle-style chandelier we liked, priced at $346.65, our shipping fee was $46.29.
No satisfaction guarantee here
It likely won't come as a surprise that Light in the Box doesn't have a stellar satisfaction guarantee - or one at all. Take a look at their guarantee page and you'll learn all about how they source their products and test them, then package your order with tracking for a safe delivery. Notice, though, that there's nothing about what they do if something goes wrong: poor product quality, late (or totally missing) delivery, and so forth.
And go wrong it will, if customer comments are any indication. Many shoppers who have tried to return their disappointing merchandise - all the way to China - found out they were on the hook for the shipping fees, if they could even get a response from Light in the Box's customer service team. Back in 2020, the Better Business Bureau got reassurances from the company that they were going to make major improvements, and yet there were still dozens of complaints filed after that. No wonder the BBB still lists this business as having an "F" rating!
Come for the laughs but order from another store
Have you gotten the impression that Light in the Box is the last place you should buy your new light fixtures? You're right! Browsing this store is fun, but the actual customer experience is worse-than-disappointing. We assume that you want a high-quality product, and no hassles with delivery or returns - you'll need to choose a higher-rated retailer to get it. Light in the Box earns our lowest possible rating.
Of course, if you want the best of both worlds, you can always consider buying your lighting online from a big-box home improvement store near you: better selection with the convenience of local returns!
Best of all, shopping for light fixtures online makes it even more likely that you'll find something you truly love - not just what happened to be in stock at the local hardware store. If you're looking for lighting that's not a carbon copy of everyone else's in your neighborhood or you've got a unique decor you're trying to enhance, you'll definitely want to have as many options as possible.
Which store should you use for buying your light fixtures? There are many excellent retailers out there and it could feel a little overwhelming deciding where to start. Consider the following criteria as you choose which store gets your business:
To help you find the right lighting for your home or office, TopConsumerReviews.com has evaluated and ranked the best online retailers of light fixtures available today. We're confident that this information will make it quick, easy, and affordable to change the look and feel of your decor!
