For over 10 years, family-owned Lights Online has been applying their 50 years of experience as a brick-and-mortar lighting specialist to their internet storefront. You'll find tens of thousands of light fixtures here, and a good customer service team at the ready if you need any guidance.

Look for discounts

When we first visited the Lights Online store, we got a pop-up offering a 15% discount for signing up for their mailing list. Be aware that some manufacturers are excluded from that savings. There were also quite a few coupon codes on some light fixtures as we browsed individual items, and a link to coupons at the bottom of the site too.

Choose a light fixture category

The easiest way to get started is by choosing the type of light fixture you're looking for from the links at the top of the site: Bath, Ceiling Fans, Chandeliers & Pendants, Ceiling, Wall, Lamps, Outdoor, or Trends. The dropdown menu will let you see specific types of lighting in each category; if you're not quite sure yet, you can choose the All link and get some ideas by browsing. It's not obvious, but on your results page you'll see two buttons for filter and sort: those can be used to see the fixtures in your price range, preferred brand, type of bulb or finish you prefer, and so on. Lights Online doesn't come out and tell you how many different light fixtures they sell in each category, but we found more than enough to keep us interested. For example, in Ceiling Fans alone, there were over 50 pages of products!

Informative but not overwhelming

There's a simplicity to product pages on Lights Online that we really appreciate. The overview, specifications, and reviews are separated by tabs: you only have to see the information you need, without having to scroll endlessly to find it. Some light fixtures have in-depth customer reviews, complete with post-installation photos and ratings of the items' quality and value.

Is it actually in stock?

And yet, our shopping experience with Lights Online was confusing at best. Many of the light fixtures that caught our attention were listed as on sale. But, when we clicked on the images to go to the product pages, most of them were out of stock. We reached out to the customer service department via live chat - and were able to reach someone right away, which is a positive - and the rep told us that while all of their in-house brands would be available, certain manufacturers had to be ordered. "But they usually come in within a few days." So, it's on sale...but you don't actually have it? That's not very straightforward.

Some customer-friendly perks worth noting

However, we can't overlook some of the good things about this store. Lights Online has a 110% price match: if you find your light fixture for less, they'll drop their pricing to be 10% less than the competitor's. You can take advantage of this prior to placing your order by reaching out to Lights Online. This store also gives you free shipping on all orders over $49, a 30-day return policy, and no shipping fees on returns unless your purchase was heavy enough to need freight delivery.

Good track record

Also, Lights Online has a solid reputation. Their Better Business Bureau listing had no complaints registered at the time of this review, and the store had earned an "A+" rating and accreditation.

Could be better

We appreciate the attention to customer service that Lights Online provides, and any company with a perfect BBB listing deserves some recognition. But, with so many light fixtures out of stock - and no way to filter products to only see the ones that are actually available - shopping this store took a lot more time than other retailers. Lights Online gets a "just okay" rating.
