Established in 2004, Lumens offers modern lighting, furniture, and decor, having established a global presence through its merger with YDesign Group several years ago. With over 420 design brands under its wing, Lumens offers an expansive product range featuring iconic designs in light fixtures.
Most expensive light fixture on our list
As we compare light fixture retailers, we like to look at the least and most expensive items on offer. At Lumens, the lowest-priced light fixture (once we sifted out all of the accessories like frame-in kits and replacement parts) was the simple Blaine Pendant by Generation Lighting, on sale for just $4.80. As for the highest-priced light fixture, Lumens won first place on our list with the Poliedri Pendant by Venini. Made to order in Medium or Large, even with a temporary 10% discount, this stunner was still priced at $286,902. Such custom-designed light fixtures can take longer to ship, of course; this Venini piece had an 11- to 13-week delivery timeframe.
Around 10,000 light fixtures to consider
But, assuming you've got something else in mind, it's not difficult to find what you're looking for among the 10,000+ light fixtures here. It's easiest if you start with a particular type of fixture, such as Ceiling Lights or Wall Lights, or maybe even by the room you're going to illuminate. From there, this store's user-friendly filters allow for easy navigation, letting you refine your search based on color, finish, light count, and more. While customer reviews can add direction to your shopping experience, they're really not visible until you click on a specific fixture you like (and that makes it difficult to use those reviews to find lighting that's been well-received by customers).
Get a free consultation with a design specialist
Still, there's plenty of detail on each light fixture's listing to go on. Descriptions and specifications tell you almost anything you could need to know, but if there's something missing, just jump into the Q&A section and see if another customer had the same question previously (or ask your own). Better yet, if you love the idea of working with a professional to get recommendations, Lumens offers free consultations with certified American Lighting Association design specialists.
Discounts... maybe
Lumens offers discounts fairly regularly. At the time of our most recent visit, there was a $50 discount on a minimum order of $500 if we provided our email address and waited for a message with the code. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work: multiple shoppers have complained that they got lots of marketing emails but never the one with the coveted savings code. At least the shipping is free on most light fixtures at Lumens, assuming you meet their $99 threshold.
Overall reputation is positive
Reputation-wise, Lumens does relatively well. The Better Business Bureau has rated the retailer with a perfect "A+” grade, and there were fewer than 3 dozen complaints filed with the BBB in the last three years. And, if you look at what people have said in Google reviews, over three-fourths of customers say Lumens deserves 5 stars; the 4.3-star average for the retailer spans more than 2,000 reviews.
30-day returns, restocking fees on orders over $5k
There are a handful of downsides to buying light fixtures from Lumens, though. First, returns can only be requested within 30 days, and while Lumens will give you the shipping label, they'll deduct the cost of the return from your refund. Also, if your order is over $5,000 (whether that's based on a single, higher-end chandelier or on a dozen recessed lights for your kitchen, media room, and hallway), Lumens reserves the right to charge a restocking fee.
In-stock fixtures may not actually be ready to ship now
But, the biggest issue customers have had with Lumens is the discrepancy between what the site shows is in stock for shipment and what's actually available. More than a few people have reported placing an order for a light fixture that says it's ready for shipping, only to get an email later saying that the updated delivery timeframe is several weeks (or months) in the future. Even shoppers who then canceled their order to place an order for a different fixture that was supposedly in-stock were then confronted with the same problem. We can't figure out why a higher-end retailer like Lumens would allow customers to have that frustrating experience.
A few issues but solid overall
All that aside, we still give Lumens a good score. There are on-trend designs for light fixtures here that you're not likely to see in some of the more big-box retailers we evaluated. We love that Lumens offers complimentary appointments with lighting experts, and their overall track record for customer service is positive. While we'll be keeping an eye on the in-stock-or-not situation, we're comfortable recommending Lumens as a worthwhile retailer for buying light fixtures.
Light fixtures play a crucial role in interior design, providing both illumination and aesthetic appeal to a space. From minimalist designs to ornate chandeliers, light fixtures come in various styles to suit different needs and decor schemes. And in recent years shopping for light fixtures online has surged in popularity.
In today's world the best selection of light fixtures is just a few clicks away. Even if you need some help with the installation, many of today's most popular online retailers can connect you with vetted professionals near you. You've literally got nothing to lose.
Let's take a closer look at some of the most common light fixture types, to help you know what you're shopping for. First up are chandeliers, elaborate ceiling-mounted fixtures featuring multiple arms with lights. Chandeliers come in various sizes and designs, from classic crystal to modern metal and glass compositions. They often serve as statement pieces in dining rooms, foyers, or living spaces.
Next we've got pendant lights. These light fixtures hang from the ceiling by a cord, chain, or rod, typically over kitchen islands, dining tables, or in hallways. They come in a wide range of styles, including sleek and minimalist designs, vintage-inspired fixtures, and geometric shapes.
If you've got limited space or a low ceiling, you'll likely need to consider flush mount and semi-flush mount light fixtures. Flush mount lights sit snug against the ceiling, while semi-flush mount lights hang slightly lower, providing a bit more visual interest.
Wall sconces are mounted to walls and provide ambient or accent lighting. They come in various styles, including traditional, contemporary, and industrial, and can be used to enhance the ambiance of bedrooms, hallways, or outdoor spaces.
And finally, there's track lighting: a linear track with adjustable fixtures that can be moved and angled to direct light where needed. This versatile option is commonly used in kitchens, galleries, or retail spaces, allowing for customizable illumination.
So, now that you have a better idea of what light fixtures you'll need, it's time to get shopping. To help you decide where to start the process of finding the perfect light fixtures, keep the following criteria in mind:
