Founded in 2011 by Jens Wohltorf and Frank Steuer, Blacklane revolutionized ride booking and management with a focus on affordability, reliability, and efficiency. From its beginnings as a two-man operation in Germany, Blacklane has expanded into an international, award-winning team of over 300, with hubs in Singapore, Spain, the UAE, the UK, and the US. Collaborating with independent local chauffeur service providers worldwide, Blacklane enables global travelers to book rides through its technology platform. While Blacklane does not own or control the rides, it facilitates them by calculating prices based on vehicle class, distance, and drive time, earning a margin from its auction system where providers select the rides that suit them best.
Only acts as a middleman, doesn't own a fleet
Did you catch that? Let's spell it out a bit: Blacklane doesn't own any limousines, Sprinter vans, or any other vehicles. They're a middleman: they accept travelers' bookings and then providers in the areas bid for the business. (Think of it as a service similar to Expedia that connects customers with flights or hotels.) It's worth making that point really clearly, because most of the limo services on our list have a fleet somewhere, and then they network with other providers when out-of-area reservations come in.
Competitive, all-inclusive pricing
We were really impressed when we went to book a limo for our fictitious group of travelers: 5 passengers arriving in Orlando (MCO) and needing transportation to one of the Disney resorts. The online quote system didn't initially ask us to specify the number of passengers, so we were able to see all vehicle classes available for that request: Business (3 passengers), Business Van/SUV (5 passengers), First Class (3 passengers), and Sprinter (12 passengers). Business Van/SUV Class was what our group needed, and we were really happy to see the quote without having to input our contact info first: $172.25, which included all tolls, fees, and VAT. (It didn't specifically say that the gratuity was part of that quote, but the easy-to-use help button on the Blacklane site helped us determine that yes, the gratuity is included.)
Great amenities
That quote was already attractive, but the perks offered across all classes of Blacklane limos was even more so: free 60 minutes of wait time on airport pickups, meet and greet (many rivals charge extra to come into the airport for you), complimentary bottle of water and in-vehicle Wi-Fi, tissues and hand sanitizer, and access to Android and iPhone chargers.
No payment required until ride is complete
If you like the quote, you'll continue by entering your flight information (if applicable), the name for the sign the chauffeur will be holding (also if applicable), and any special instructions for the driver. Next, you'll create a Blacklane account and enter your preferred payment method to hold the reservation; you won't be charged until the ride is finished.
Reliability is only so-so
You won't find a Better Business Bureau listing for Blacklane because the limo company is based in Germany. We turned to Trustpilot to see what people around the globe had to say about the service, and the feedback was pretty mixed. Across more than 4600 ratings, Blacklane only earned a 3.6-star average: 71% of reviewers gave the company a perfect 5-star score, but nearly 20% rated it with just 1 star. It seems that you're really dependent on who Blacklane contracts in the area where you're traveling, and you're likely either going to be totally satisfied or utterly left in the lurch. But, we found too many rants saying that the Blacklane driver canceled the booking last-minute, and the limo company didn't do anything to make alternate arrangements. Those people were often left scrambling for an Uber or a taxi (which was immediately available and turned out to be cheaper anyway).
Bargain pricing, but have a backup option on standby
We give Blacklane an above-average rating of our own. The pricing here was really compelling, along with the ride perks we didn't necessarily see listed out by rival limo services. If you get matched up with a Blacklane partner that provides exceptional service, you'll probably give this company a 5-star rating like many others did. But, the fact that you are at the mercy of the service that picks you up is a downside, and you'll have to be willing to take a chance if you book through Blacklane. Best advice? Book through Blacklane if you get a quote you just can't pass up, but have a backup plan ready to go if your limo doesn't show up.
Limo services offer a luxurious and comfortable mode of transportation for a variety of occasions. Special moments like weddings, proms, and bachelorette parties are common events where limos are the transportation of choice, with elegant and spacious interiors that provide a perfect setting for celebrations and deliver a memorable experience. Corporate events and business travel also see significant use of limo services due to the professional and sophisticated image they project.
Moreover, limos provide a stress-free travel experience with professional chauffeurs ensuring timely and safe transportation. The types of vehicles available typically include stretch limousines, SUV limousines, luxury sedans, party buses, and classic cars. Stretch limousines are the most iconic, often used for weddings, proms, and formal events. SUV limousines offer more space and a robust look, suitable for corporate events or larger groups.
Luxury sedans provide a more understated elegance, ideal for business travel or airport transfers. Party buses are perfect for larger groups looking to celebrate on the move, such as for bachelorette parties or birthdays. Classic cars offer a vintage charm, often chosen for weddings and special anniversaries.
Choosing a limo service over ride-sharing options like Uber or Lyft often comes down to the level of service and experience provided. Limos offer a more personalized and luxurious experience, with amenities such as high-end sound systems, minibars, and plush seating that ride-sharing services do not provide. For events like proms or bachelorette parties, the experience of traveling in a limo adds to the festivities and creates a sense of occasion. Limo services may also include extras like red carpet rollout, professional chauffeurs dressed in formal attire, and customizable services to meet specific needs, which are not typically available with ride-sharing services.
While most limo services operate within a specific geographic area, they typically have partnerships with other limo companies, allowing them to offer nationwide or even worldwide reservations. This network of partner companies ensures that you can rely on a single service provider for your transportation needs, whether you're traveling locally or internationally. This coordination should offer convenience and consistency, as customers can reasonably expect the same level of service regardless of their location.
