When it comes to buying your next set of luggage, your brand choice depends on several factors. Are you looking for the cheapest possible set to get your clothes from here to there? A designer label that conveys luxury and status? A mix of form, function, and value? Your answer to those questions will be a good jumping-off point as you decide which brand of luggage is right for you.
Do you have a preference for hard-sided or soft-sided carry-ons and suitcases? Some luggage brands offer both, while others specialize in one or the other. The same goes for the color and/or design: almost any brand will give you several options in basic black, but if you want your bags to stand out on the claim carousel at the airport - so that you spend as little time as possible trying to figure out which one is yours - your options may be more limited.

Designed by pilots and well-loved by civilians, Travelpro should be the first luggage brand you consider. From heavy-duty duffels and backpacks to hard- and softside carry-ons and suitcases, everything here is built to last and comes with some of the best warranty protection in the industry. Best of all, Travelpro actually stands by its promises, earning the loyalty of thousands of customers for the last 30+ years. This is easily our favorite luggage brand.
Rockland has plenty to offer as a luggage brand: unique designs, colors and patterns to make your suitcase easy to spot, a solid replacement warranty, and thousands of five-star reviews from happy travelers. This affordable brand is one of our favorite choices for luggage.
Simple, affordable, and "good enough” is the best way to describe the Amazon Basics luggage brand. No, you won't find all the bells and whistles like USB ports and TSA-approved locks, but you also won't spend more than $275 for your luggage. If you're trying to get a decent set of luggage on a budget, Amazon Basics is a solid brand to consider.
American Tourister is the less-spendy side of the Samsonite brand family, offering "good enough” luggage for infrequent travels. And, if you absolutely have to have that Disney or Star Wars suitcase, this is the right place to shop. Your American Tourister luggage might not last a long time, but it won't break the bank either.
The Samsonite brand, in business for over a century, is practically synonymous with "luggage”. You'll find plenty of options, from small, softsided carry-ons to large hardsided spinner suitcases, in a rainbow of colors and across all price points. On selection alone, Samsonite would be tops - but the brand falls down on customer service (or lack thereof). We suggest keeping Samsonite as a backup if you don't find your perfect luggage with a higher-ranked brand in our review.
Level8 has only been around since 2008, but the luggage brand already has some loyal customers - with thousands of 4- and 5-star ratings on many of its hardsided suitcases and carry-ons. The style of Level8 is somewhat minimalist and boxy, but that shape and the more novel color options will definitely make your luggage stand out. Downsides include a less-than-clear warranty and some site typos, but this is a brand worth looking at if you're only considering hardsided luggage and you want a unique style.
Thule is a decent brand to check out if you're headed out on an active adventure: most of the luggage here is known for keeping dirty and clean laundry separate, being waterproof, and for going as far around the world as you can dream. But, the options for other types of travel - professional, theme park vacation, and so on - are very slim with Thule, and the company's reputation for customer support leaves room for improvement.
Briggs & Riley is a premier luggage brand. Anything you purchase here will be an investment in your adventures for many years to come, with high-tech features and premium construction on everything they offer, for luggage designed to last and backed by a lifetime warranty. Most people say their Briggs & Riley luggage withstands the tests of time and travel, but unfortunately there are a lot of complaints if and when warranty claims are required. Between that and an "F” from the BBB, this luggage brand doesn't earn our highest recommendation.
Delsey Paris is a luggage brand with nearly 80 years of history. You'll find plenty of features throughout the 12+ product lines here, ranging from a removable/washable lining to USB plugs and more - if the style you want is actually in stock and ready for purchase. And, while Delsey Paris bags come with a warranty of up to 10 years, many customers complain that it's a hassle to get the company to take care of problems that ought to be covered.
If you're looking for a high-end, luxury brand of luggage, TUMI fits the bill. Most pieces are priced between $600 - $1,900, but a better-than-average warranty (that covers airline handling damage in the first year) could make it worth the investment. However, this brand is missing a lot of the extras and features we'd expect for the cost, and some customers have found it difficult to get warranty repair work done.
Still, almost every luggage brand has something that can catch your eye. Whether it's a bright solid color with contrasting accents, or a crazy pattern that's not likely to be repeated among your fellow passengers, you can usually find a piece that will stand out..
Another factor that will influence your luggage brand choice is your travel purpose. Taking the kids to Disneyland would require a very different assortment of carry-ons and suitcases (and sizes) from a couples' trip to hit the slopes at Vail or a solo backpacker adventure through Europe.
Once you've figured out if you need hard or soft luggage and determined what kind(s) of journeys you expect to put your bags through, what else will you need to consider as you choose a brand? Keep these factors in mind:
