Where Can You Find the Best Online Marriage Counseling?  In recent years, the number of people turning to online therapy for help has increased exponentially. According to a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine, more than half of all mental health appointments are conducted via the internet or telehealth. While the 2020 pandemic may have increased those numbers initially, many have chosen to stay with or start online counseling as a way to fit the service into their busy lives.

Giving clients a choice of curated professionals, E-Therapy Cafe offers counseling and coaching to meet your relationship needs. Though not accepting insurance, the cost for services is reasonable, as far as cash-pay therapy goes. While sessions are just 30 minutes in length, the option to combine your credits to schedule a longer meeting provides flexibility for couples looking to dig deeper when the situation warrants. We highly recommend E-Therapy Cafe as the best option for marriage counseling if you are not using insurance.

Growing Self features counselors with Master's degrees who mainly specialize in couples therapy and online coaching. A free consultation can help you see if their therapy sessions are a good fit for you and your partner. Pricing varies but is on the lower side of what we've seen, and a sliding scale is available, though insurance is not accepted. Flexible session lengths are an option if desired, though therapy services are limited by your location. All in all, Growing Self is an excellent option if you're considering marriage counseling.

For couples who want to learn science-based skills to change their behavior, internet-counseling pioneer Online-Therapy provides cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in most of the United States. While not focusing exclusively on marriage counseling, the platform provides the "tools" to change your relationship and yourself, including homework lessons and yoga videos. Using the monthly subscription model for payment, Online-Therapy has one of the lower per-session options - if you plan to see a counselor weekly. With the availability of live chat messaging to the therapist and all of the bonus tools included in the subscription price, we rank Online-Therapy as a great value for those couples who want to do CBT.

For couples who need more than a session a week to work through their issues, Couples Therapy Inc. offers weekend intensives, followed by additional sessions as desired. The company's intake process is extremely involved and is used to prepare your therapist for the weekend you will spend together, locally in person or online. Not covered by insurance and priced higher than a mortgage payment, this option is for those who have the money and want to put in the effort to save their relationship. For the unique service provided and the limited positive reviews encountered, we recommend Couples Therapy Inc. as the best option for those in need of extreme assistance with their relationships.

Octave offers all types of therapy, including online marriage counseling, by vetted professionals. Many insurance plans are accepted, though cash-pay options are on the higher end of services we've seen. With mixed reviews and difficulty finding the essential information you need, Octave ranks at just above average.

For those without insurance, finding a reasonably-priced marriage therapist or other healthcare professional can be tricky. Sesame aims to provide a marketplace where people can receive healthcare without paying high fees or relying on insurance companies. With over 10,000 doctors and specialists all over the United States, you're likely to find a therapist near you. However, taking into account recent BBB complaints against the company by users, combined with the fact that Sesame simply lists available providers, we rank this company as just average for those seeking marriage counseling.

On the Our Ritual website

Relatively new to online relationship counseling, OurRitual offers a limited number of "Experts" who work with couples using a variety of therapeutic methods. Couples are encouraged to complete homework between the 40-minute sessions to work along Pathways to reach their goals. Subscriptions are the lowest monthly price we've encountered. However, though OurRitual offers a guarantee, numerous reviewers complain that it's difficult to claim that refund. We just aren't excited by what OurRitual may offer for marriage counseling and recommend that you look at a more reputable platform instead.

Online marriage counseling, or couples therapy, provides specialized support for those in relationships who want help with any number of issues, from improving communication and dividing household responsibilities, to overcoming infidelity and reconciliation. Therapists providing this type of service focus on helping couples learn to improve relationship dynamics, resolve conflict, and create a stronger partnership. Not strictly for married couples, this type of therapy can help those who are dating, engaged, or in long-term partnerships as well. Some companies provide counseling specific to your relationship situation, including for LGBTQIA+ couples.

While online therapy is not equipped to deal with all situations (most of these services suggest seeking help elsewhere if you are experiencing a medical emergency, need an official diagnosis, must fulfill a court order, or are in danger of physical abuse), it can provide a helpful alternative to in-person counseling, especially for those who are separated by the miles or scheduling challenges. Some companies even focus on military and other transient lifestyles for their counseling services.

Telehealth counseling plays an integral role in providing accessibility to mental health services for areas where professionals do not have a physical office, including rural areas. These services are often available at a reduced rate, which is essential to those paying out-of-pocket for services (many services noted that marriage and couples counseling is not usually covered by insurance, though several companies we reviewed said they accept insurance so be sure to check your policy for covered benefits).

There are some unexpected benefits to online couples therapy. First, there is a reduction in the costs of childcare or transportation to get to a physical office for an appointment. Clients have noted that they waste less time since they are not traveling or sitting in a waiting room. Multiple studies have concluded that there is no discernable client outcome difference between virtual and in-person therapy sessions. Flexible additions of virtual messaging between appointments has improved the therapy experience. Those with disabilities or limited mobility have easier access to help with these online marriage counseling platforms. Some people even note the privacy and anonymity they experience with online services since they are no longer concerned about being seen in the waiting room of a counselor.

Not all marriage counseling platforms are created equal. When deciding which online therapy service best meets your needs, we suggest considering these important aspects:

We at Top Consumer Reviews have sifted through all of these considerations in order to find the best online marriage counseling platforms. We hope that our ranked list from first-to-worst will help you select a therapist who will guide you towards your relationship goals - so that you can enjoy your best life together.

Marriage Counseling FAQ

What is marriage counseling?
Marriage counseling is a type of therapy designed to help couples resolve conflicts, improve communication, and strengthen their relationship. A trained therapist or counselor guides couples through discussions and exercises to address issues they may be facing in their marriage.
When should we consider marriage counseling?
Marriage counseling can be beneficial at various stages of a relationship. Couples may consider it when facing communication difficulties, unresolved conflicts, infidelity, or when they feel disconnected from each other.
How does marriage counseling work?

In a typical session, couples share their perspectives and emotions on specific issues. The counselor facilitates productive conversations, helps identify patterns of interaction, and offers tools to address challenges constructively.
How long does marriage counseling take?
The duration of marriage counseling varies based on the complexity of the issues and the willingness of the couple to engage in the process. Some couples may see improvement within a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term counseling.
Can one partner attend counseling alone?
While marriage counseling is typically conducted with both partners present, individual counseling sessions may be recommended if one partner is not initially willing to participate. However, the goal is often to involve both partners for better outcomes.
Is marriage counseling only for couples in crisis?
No, marriage counseling is not solely for couples in crisis. It can be a proactive step to strengthen a healthy relationship, address minor issues before they escalate, or enhance communication skills.
