An idea that started in 2011 out of the Washington, D.C., area, Territory bills itself as a truly local option for meal delivery. A group of friends wanted super-high-quality, dietitian-approved meals that were locally-made. None of them had the cooking skills for that, so they hired a local chef, and Territory was born. These friends continued looking for more chefs in other regions, and now Territory is available in 27 states. Delivered fresh and not frozen, Territory meals are clean - all completely free of inflammatory oils, dairy, gluten, and refined sugars. These are nutrient-dense, carefully-sourced, high-quality, freshly-prepared meals. Territory has been featured by Women's Health, Entrepreneur, Delish, Self, and Forbes.
Almost too minimal at first glance
At first glance, Territory's website seems almost too minimal. The primary menu only offers three options to navigate. However, if you scroll to the bottom, a secondary menu gives you far more information to explore before making a commitment or sharing your personal information. Don't get too attached, though - Territory is only available in 27 states, so you may want to go ahead and provide that email and zip code before investing too much time looking around, only to discover Territory doesn't deliver to you. In this case, we liked this company's reviews enough to check our zip code before delving too deep into the website. Once we entered our zip code, we discovered that Territory does deliver within our area, and we were able to check out the upcoming weekly menu. This is where we were truly impressed. We had so many appetizing options and diet plans, and nutrition details (including macros)were included with each recipe along with a beautiful photo and the price per serving.
35+ meal choices per week, lots of diet plans covered
Every Territory meal is gluten- and dairy-free and made with clean oils, but it gets better. So many dietary styles are represented here, making this meal delivery service one of the most flexible we've seen. Here are some of the diet filters you can choose from at Territory:
Each one of these filters gives information on ingredients those meals avoid and the overall ingredients that make up the diet - very informative and a great feature. Some of the delicious-looking meals we had to choose from for the week were artichoke pesto chicken, asparagus egg scramble, Mongolian-style beef, chicken enchiladas, lemon dill chicken, pork egg roll in a bowl, blackened salmon with Spanish rice, butternut squash dahl, and more. There are about 35 Territory meals to choose from each week. There are also sides you can add on to your order, like chili and other soups, sweet potato wedges, bone broth, family meals, and more. Meals come prepared and ready to reheat and can be on the table in a few minutes.
Clean nutrition made easy
Every meal from Territory is carefully made using only clean, healthy fats, fresh, nutrient-dense produce, and clean proteins. Territory is dedicated to making sure that this is far more nutritious and healthy than getting takeout. Not only that, Territory gives you full nutrition information and saves you time by including macronutrient ratios on its website.
Single servings starting at $10.99
How about per-serving pricing at Territory? Meals like tomato lentil stew were $10.99, while meals like sage beef bolognese and blackened salmon were $15.99. We noticed that most meals were in between those price points. There are enough options that you could have great variety and still stay within your budget. With the exception of the family style meals, all meals come in single serving sizes. So, if you're feeding four, you'd want to add multiple meals to your order, or just make separate orders for each person so they can be customized to each person's preferences.
Great for couples with different dietary needs
This plan is great if you and your partner have different dietary needs. No need to spend time cooking for two different diet plans - simply reheat and eat, and both of you have the proper macros and ingredients to maintain optimal health.
Deliveries twice a week
Because Territory is local and prides itself on maintaining freshness, meals are usually delivered twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. You can order up to 12 meals per delivery day.
Rate your meals
Territory lets you rate your weekly meals so they can have feedback and get to know your taste preferences better. This makes it easier for them to take your past orders plus your feedback to customize and pre-populate future weekly menus. This is far better than other meal delivery services in that it's so much more personalized.
Few but good ratings
Territory's commitment to health and high quality is apparent. However, there are not very many customer reviews, and Territory isn't rated by the Better Business Bureau. The few reviews we could find were positive and talked about the great flavor and quality ingredients used in Territory's meals. Delivery issues, a problem most meal delivery companies struggle with, are a non-issue for Territory: you can be confident that your meals will arrive on time. We aren't surprised by this, since they use only local chefs.
Delivery fees fluctuate
In most regions, delivery is a flat charge of $9.99. In New York and San Francisco, delivery is $10.99. If you opt to receive two deliveries per week for freshness or volume, you will be charged for each delivery in the week. Other areas generally have a shipping rate of anywhere between $11.99 and $17.99, based on UPS two-day shipping rates. Our delivery fee, for example, ended up being $11.99.
Decent for singles willing to spend a little extra
We love so many things about Territory. They've solved the problem of delivery issues and freshness that rival meal delivery kits face without sacrificing texture because they don't need to freeze their meals. We love that they are local and do everything they can to support community farmers and producers that treat animals humanely. The amazing variety while still eliminating gluten, dairy, and inflammatory ingredients is quite an accomplishment. We understand that with the quality they are delivering, the price tag will be a little higher - but the fact is that their price point plus shipping, depending on where you are located, can be prohibitive. That and the fact that they are only available in about half the United States led to a lower rating. It is also a meal delivery service that doesn't cater well to families, as with the example of the few "family style” options, there is no multiple serving plan. For singles or couples who've got the money, Territory is a phenomenal option, but families or individuals on a budget should look at the higher-ranked (and less expensive) meal delivery providers on our list.
Like us, our food choices are distinctive and individual. The booming prepared meal delivery services industry is a reflection of that. Choosing a meal kit from all the choices available depends on a lot of factors - the most important of which is the reason why you are looking for an easier way to nourish yourself in the first place.
Perhaps you are dealing with a chronic illness that can be helped by altering your diet. Maybe you need to take a break from cooking because you are going through significant changes in your life. It is possible that your young family is too busy with extracurricular activities, playdates, and obligations to find time for menu planning and grocery shopping.
Perhaps you are a senior who needs a fully prepared meal solution. Maybe you are just tired of takeout and food waste and only want the food you know you will cook. Or you're a rotten cook who wants to learn how to prepare a meal that isn't too dry or undercooked. Meal delivery services can help you and your family's mental and physical health, regardless of your circumstances or motivations.
A meal delivery service can alleviate the burden of preparing entirely different menus for you and your loved ones in cases where families have multiple dietary restrictions. So if you need a diet to deal with the effects of menopause but your partner is weightlifting and needs a high protein diet, a meal delivery service can cover that. You only receive the food you actually eat with these services because everything is pre-portioned. Some kits even do the prep work of chopping, slicing, and cooking grains for you.
Meal delivery services typically keep things simple while still ensuring that your food is tasty and satisfying. Some are kits that take just five or six steps to prepare. There are others who promise 30-minute meal prep time. If you are interested in learning how to cook but are short on time, a meal kit subscription could be a good option. You can even learn new cooking techniques from the gourmet meals that some services provide (sometimes for an upgraded price, but it is worth it). In no time at all, you will be able to confidently claim the title of "home chef." And, for individuals who are mindful of their budget, there are companies that specialize in delivering affordable home-cooked meals.
If you are concerned about the environment, you can find a number of meal delivery options that adhere strictly to regulations regarding responsible fishing and provide only the healthiest ingredients in their prepared meals. Although not certified organic, many businesses are now buying from local farms that follow rigorous standards for the humane treatment of animals and for healthy, delicious produce.
There are meal delivery services that will teach you new skills but will also require you to do some prep work, and there are other services that will deliver meals that only require 15 minutes to make. Incredibly detailed recipe cards and easy-to-follow instructions are provided by most brands, making meal preparation accessible to even the youngest family members. Some people find the recipes on these cards to be so useful that they opt to keep them for when they want to make the same dish on their own.
