Medical evacuation services have gained significant popularity due to the critical role they play in ensuring timely and efficient transport of patients needing urgent medical care. This rise in popularity is due to a number of factors that emphasize the importance of accessibility, advanced medical care, and global reach in emergency situations.
Imagine you're trekking through a dense jungle in Southeast Asia when you slip and severely twist your ankle. Stranded in a remote location with no immediate medical aid, you activate your emergency beacon. Within hours, a specialized medical evacuation team arrives by helicopter, transporting you to the nearest advanced medical facility for treatment.

Backed by a team of experts, including critical care professionals and military veterans, they provide flexible membership options for short- and long-term travelers. From field rescue and evacuation services to transportation to your preferred hospital, Global Rescue ensures your safety in any situation. Travelex is an insurance company that's protected travelers since 1996. Now serving as a subsidiary of Zurich Insurance Group, you can trust all of the policies offered here to include varying levels of medical evacuation coverage. The good news is that Travelex gets lots of 5-star reviews, even from policyholders who had to make a claim. The bad news is that feedback specific to medevac situations/claims are hard to find, and that the coverage here includes the usual restrictions of "nearest adequate medical facility” rather than allowing you to choose where you're treated. Travelex gets a good rating for being a reputable travel insurance company, but it doesn't go as far as some of its medevac-focused rivals do.
SkyMed promises to "take you home” when you need a medical evacuation. Since 1989, the company has offered medevac memberships for both short- and long-term travels, serving both individuals and families, and even expats living in Mexico or the Caribbean can subscribe to their coverage. But, you should be aware that your flight home may be on a commercial carrier: SkyMed doesn't guarantee that you'll be on a private jet if they can safely transport you on a traditional airline (with a nurse, if needed). That and a few other downsides have led to mixed reviews from SkyMed members, although there are still ample testimonials from clients showing that SkyMed was worth the cost. This is neither the best nor the worst option for medical evacuations, but you might want to look at SkyMed's rivals that are higher on our list first.
Redpoint offers three types of travelers' insurance, all of which come with medical evacuation coverage: Harbor (for budget-friendly, domestic travels), Cavalry (for luxury travel to established destinations), and Ripcord (for high-adventure trips to places off the beaten path). At first glance, these policies seem to provide generous coverage, even going so far as to include search and rescue benefits for Redpoint plan members and offering both one-trip and annual policies. However, recent reviews from adventure travel companies highlight discrepancies between the advertised coverage and actual service provided, leading to uncertainty and skepticism among experts in the industry. That may also be why the BBB has only rated Redpoint as a "B”-grade company.
TravelGuard by AIG is probably one of the biggest names in travel insurance, in operation for more than two decades. All three of its policies include medical evacuation benefits, ranging from $150,000 to $1 million in coverage, and premiums are attractively priced. However, you'll have a tough time finding anyone who loves anything about the service received (or not) from TravelGuard: it seems like the company works hard to deny claims, lose paperwork, and generally leave travelers in the lurch. That's not going to give you any peace of mind when it comes to medical evacuation protection, and so we give TravelGuard a lower rating.
AirMedCare Network is an option if you want to hedge your bets against high medical evacuation costs. If you need a medevac flight within the US, or a non-emergency hospital-to-hospital transport internationally, your membership here might cover it. But notice the word "might”: if the dispatcher in your accident or injury doesn't happen to use one of AMCN's partner providers, your benefits won't apply. That leaves an awful lot to chance, which is the opposite of the reassurance you probably want when choosing a medical evacuation plan. All of that uncertainty earns AMCN a low rating from us.
Emergency Assistance Plus (also known as EA+) has been in the medical evacuation industry since 1996, with over 2 million policyholders in the last three decades. The company offers both individual and family coverage, with two tiers of protection to choose from. However, despite an "A+” from the BBB, EA+ has received a lot of unhappy feedback from members who were denied coverage in their greatest times of need. They point to policy exceptions like "must have been admitted to the hospital” and others as ways that EA+ ducks out of providing essential benefits. Emergency Assistance Plus is not a service we would use for our own protection, and its low rating here is our encouragement to you to look elsewhere for medical evacuation coverage.
Of course, most of us don't live such exciting lives. But, medical evacuation might still be a necessity: you might be on a business trip in a different town when you experience sudden chest pain, or perhaps you're on a cruise in the Caribbean and you break your arm getting on the tender to the port. If the local hospital lacks the necessary facilities and expertise to address your condition adequately, having medical evacuation coverage can get you transportation to a renowned cardiac center in a nearby city or back home to the States for surgery on your arm in a facility you trust (and in a language you speak).
One of the biggest reasons for the popularity of medical evacuation services is the critical need for rapid response in medical emergencies. When people suffer severe injuries or illnesses in remote or inaccessible locations, the ability to quickly transport them to advanced medical facilities can be life-saving. Medical evacuation services provide a vital lifeline, ensuring that patients receive immediate attention and are moved to appropriate care centers with minimal delay.
Additionally, the level of care provided during medical evacuations is a key factor in their appeal. These evacuation services are often equipped with advanced medical equipment and staffed by highly trained medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics who specialize in critical care transport. This can ensure that patients receive continuous and specialized medical attention throughout the journey, bridging the gap between the site of the emergency and the healthcare facility.
Medical evacuation providers offer crucial services for individuals who encounter medical emergencies while traveling, typically transporting a patient from one location to another, often from a remote or under-equipped medical facility to a more advanced one, or even back home.. These services can be purchased as standalone memberships or policies, or they can be bundled with travel insurance policies offered by insurers.
