Toshiba is a Japanese electronics company that spans Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. The company began in 1875 as a supplier of telegraphy equipment and has created over 500 major technologies. Some noteworthy accomplishments from the company include developing the world's first microcomputer for automobiles, releasing the world's first bulb-type fluorescent lamp, developing Japan's first MRI machine, and more.
Nothing fancy
Toshiba might not be a brand you think of when you are in the market for kitchen appliances, but nevertheless they sell things like toaster ovens, rice cookers, and microwave ovens. Their inventory of microwave ovens includes 14 choices, all of which kind of blend together with similar looks (all gray and black stainless steel) and functionality (basic heating and convection - no air frying). Toshiba doesn't have filters on their website that allow you to narrow down the microwave ovens in any specific way. Rather, you'll need to scroll through each image and click on them one-by-one to read through important details.
Bare bones information
None of Toshiba's product descriptions really specify what type of microwave you're looking at. All of them appear to be types that sit on your counter or could possibly be installed over a range. We wish that Toshiba would break their products into some sort of categories because it's painful trying to figure out which microwave oven will best fit what we are looking for. All you can read about each microwave oven is a basic description of the product with 3 highlighted features (things like 10 power levels, built-in sensors, and eco mode), the color, capacity, turntable diameter, and rated output power. Information is really bare bones here.
No pricing
Since Toshiba doesn't sell any of their microwave ovens from their website, there is no pricing to be seen. This is really annoying since often we like to quickly identify all the options that are in our budget. In this case, we aren't able to do that and you have to find a third-party retailer through Toshiba's site to see what they are pricing that particular model at.
Nothing about a warranty
Oddly, the only warranty information on Toshiba's website is for their toaster ovens. They don't list anything about a warranty on their microwave ovens. This is important information, so at the very least we'd hope you'd be able to get these details from the retailer you purchase the microwave oven from. The same will go for a return policy since you aren't actually buying anything directly from Toshiba. Either way, we are surprised and disappointed by the noticeable lack of transparency here.
Lacking customer ratings
Of course there are no ratings on any of the microwave ovens here, so all we can really go off of is their Better Business Bureau rating, which is an "A-”. We can't imagine that Toshiba is a brand that people are flocking to for kitchen appliances, especially based on the fact that they have such a small selection that has to be sought out.
Major deterrents
There is almost nothing about Toshiba that makes us want to buy a microwave oven from them. Their selection is nothing fancy - just very basic microwaves with bottom of the barrel features that would be enough to simply heat food and that's it. Given that there is no pricing on their website, no easily digestible information for us to compare models, no warranty information, and no reviews on their products, we are really deterred from shopping here. They've earned our lowest rating among microwave oven brands.
More than likely you moved into your home and a microwave oven was already there, ready for you to use at your convenience. We rarely think twice about these powerful little appliances that allow us to nuke a hot pocket, reheat last night's takeout, and quickly appease a child's demands for chicken nuggets. If yours suddenly breaks and you find yourself in the market for a replacement, you'll quickly realize just how much you depended on your microwave. Can you even live without one?
You may not have paid much attention to it before, but there are actually quite a few different designs for microwaves. Do you want stainless steel? Black? White? Red? Most people choose to match the color and design of their microwave to their oven and refrigerator, but you could always switch things up for a more modern style you like better.
Many homes have a place built into the wall specifically for a microwave so that they don't stand out or take up counter space like they used to. Still, microwaves differ a bit in which features they come with and their size. Most over-the-range ovens are around 30”, open from the side, and have basic heating functionality.
More advanced microwaves act more like an oven with pull-down doors and convection technology that allow you to make things like cookies or rolls within minutes. Some even let you air fry, allowing you to have lots of important cooking functions without needing multiple appliances to get the job done.
Most microwave oven brands all get their microwaves from the same manufacturer, so rather than focusing or worrying too much about which brand provides the best quality, you'll want to pay attention to the designs offered, selection, prices (and how often they run sales), warranty, policies, and feedback about customer service. More specifically, here are some things we recommend paying close attention to when you're browsing all the different companies you might choose to buy your microwave oven from:
