2024 Mobility Scooter Company Reviews

USM Review 3 Star Rating

USM

3 Star Rating
  • Starting at $1,149
  • 38 mobility scooters
  • Free shipping on scooters
  • Possible discounts by phone
  • 10-day return policy

USM has an impressive inventory of all types of medical supplies and mobility supports, but their mobility scooter selection is pretty basic. There are 38 choices starting at $1,149 and they don't have a low-price guarantee. You only have 10 days to make a return if you need to do so and there aren't many customer reviews here. USM is also not rated by the Better Business Bureau, so we weren't as excited to shop here as we were at other higher-rated stores.

Scootaround Review 2 Star Rating

Scootaround

2 Star Rating
  • 12 mobility scooter choices
  • FSA/HSA eligible
  • Scooters starting at $1,149
  • Free shipping on orders over $50
  • 30-day return policy

Based on Scootaround's company description, they seem most focused on providing repairs and replacements for mobility chairs and scooters at their locations throughout North America. They also have a small selection of mobility scooters, but most of them don't have customer ratings and there is nothing out of the ordinary about them. Prices start at $1,149 and you'll get all the important functionality from what is offered here, but there is no low price guarantee or anything that would reassure us that you're getting a good deal. Scootaround has an "F” rating from the Better Business Bureau, which is also concerning to us. It seems that they offer some good services, but selling mobility scooters isn't one of their top priorities. Go with a higher-rated retailer instead.

Where is the Best Place to Buy a Mobility Scooter?

We often take the ability to walk and run for granted. When you get an injury and need a knee replacement, develop severe arthritis, or find that aging has taken its toll on your ability to walk long distances, it may feel like your life has to come to a standstill. After all, simply getting around the house, running basic errands, or going on a dream vacation all require being able to get to and from independently.

If you're limited in your ability to walk around comfortably, you may be wondering how to get a sense of normalcy back and move forward in life (pun intended). Mobility scooters are a fantastic (and fun) way to reclaim your independence and productivity. There are all types of scooters for both indoor and outdoor terrain as well as different designs to fit your style.

Mobility Scooter Company FAQ

For people who have difficulty with getting around (due to age, illness, or other reasons), mobility scooters represent freedom. You've probably seen them in use at theme parks, at the grocery store, and other locations that require a lot of walking. Mobility scooters differ from power wheelchairs in that they are operated more like a moped, and users need to be able to get on and off.
Most scooters are classified by style and use. For example, you can get folding scooters if you don't have a rack for transporting a full-size scooter on your vehicle, travel scooters for vacations, scooters for indoor/outdoor use, and so forth.
As you shop for a scooter, your first considerations will probably be practical. What is the intended usage? Do you need a model with a higher rider weight capacity? Do you prefer three wheels or four? From there, it's time to have fun: accessories range from cup holders to flags, canopies for frequent outdoor trips in sunny weather, and beyond.
Mobility scooters range from $500 to over $7000. Be sure to read the fine print to determine what is included in your base price: some scooters come with a free charger and battery, but others require you to purchase them in addition to the cost of the scooter.
Many retailers of mobility scooters include delivery in the retail price. If you want "white glove delivery" that covers the assembly and setup of your scooter, expect to pay $100 to $200 for the service.
Medicare Part B considers mobility scooters as "durable medical equipment". If your physician writes an order confirming that you have a medical need for a scooter, you will qualify. Medicare covers 80% of the cost, and the remaining 20% is your responsibility (though that portion could be covered by a Medigap plan, if you have one). Similar terms apply if you have coverage through Medicaid.
Yes, mobility scooters usually have warranty coverage, both through the manufacturer and the retailer. The warranty period is typically a year and includes in-home technician visits if needed. You may also be able to purchase an extended warranty for longer coverage.
Return policies vary by retailer. Most have a period ranging from 15 to 30 days in which you can send your scooter back; however, hefty restocking fees of up to 25% of the purchase price could be a deterrent. You may have to pay for return shipping fees as well.

Continued from above...

There are a range of features you can look for on a mobility scooter like 3 or 4 wheels, LED safety lights, upgraded suspension, oversized baskets and more. Do you need one that can easily fit in and out of your vehicle? How long will you need it to go on a single charge?

Some scooters have weight maximums, so pay close attention to that detail too. It may help to jot down a list of all the most important features you need your mobility scooter to come with before you jump online, so that you know exactly what to be searching for.

Since mobility scooters have become increasingly popular over the years, you'll find that there are quite a few retailers to choose from. These companies usually arrange their selection by 3- or 4-wheel scooters, travel scooters, heavy-duty scooters, accessories, lifts, trailers, and more. Ideally you'll find a retailer that lets you filter by price so you can easily identify all the choices within your budget. You'll want to shop from a reputable store that gives every detail you'd want to know before spending a few thousand dollars on a mobility scooter.

We've done a lot of the important research regarding some of the best online retailers that sell mobility scooters and recommend keeping the following things in mind when you're shopping:

  • Selection. Are there a variety of different brands sold through the retailer? Do they have a range of colors and scooters with different features? It may initially appear that a company has a big stock of mobility scooters, but be sure that most of them are in-stock to get an idea of how big their selection actually is.
  • Website navigation. Is it easy to see all the options you have through the retailer? Is their website simple to navigate and narrow down the types of mobility scooters you're most interested in? You don't want to waste your time shuffling through a confusing website with overwhelming amounts of information and indistinct product descriptions that leave you confused about which mobility scooter to choose.
  • Warranty. The warranty should be listed in the product description. Be sure to pay attention to this so you know how long you'd have to get your mobility scooter fixed or replaced if something were to go wrong with it in the first few months. Most scooters come with 1-2 years of coverage, but you may be able to purchase extended warranty coverage through the retailer.
  • Reputation. When you're buying something as important as a mobility scooter, you'll want to be sure the company ships on time, has a good customer service team, and provides quality products. Pay attention to what other buyers have said about their experience and the rating from the Better Business Bureau as well.

The experts at Top Consumer Reviews have researched the most important things you'd need to know about choosing a mobility scooter. We hope this information helps you find something that gets you back to enjoying your day-to-day activities with ease!
