Colonial Medical is one of just a handful of companies that actually maintains a warehouse of medical equipment. In business since 1984, the company currently has an A+ with the BBB and is a name to trust when deciding where to buy a mobility scooter or other medical equipment.
The online store is fairly basic. When looking at scooters, you can sort by price, name, or rating. The site doesn't make it easy to go directly to the types of scooters you want, such as 3- or 4-wheel models, so be prepared to spend some time looking for the right one out of the 22 mobility scooters they carry.
When you click on a scooter, you'll be able to see at a glance what to expect in terms of options, specifications, and price. Almost all of the scooters ship for free, and all of the ones we considered came with a lifetime warranty. We would like to see Colonial Medical provide more details on that warranty: does it come with in-house repairs or any other features?
It's also important to note that mobility scooters are strictly non-returnable, unless it is received as defective or damaged in some way. You would need to contact Colonial Medical's customer service department right away if that's the case.
Although we found a few complaints about ordering issues, most of those were several years old. This makes us think that part of the reason this store has such a solid rating with the BBB is because they've made improvements over the last few years.
Overall, Colonial Medical has an adequate selection of mobility scooters, and we like the idea of making such a major purchase from a company that has proven itself as reputable for over 30 years.
For those with difficulties getting around at home or in public, mobility scooters are the most popular way of helping them stay active and engaged in life. From simplifying shopping trips to making it possible to get safely from one room to another, mobility scooters make it possible to stay independent even when users are managing difficult health conditions that affect their mobility.
When deciding which mobility scooter is right for you or for a loved one, the first consideration is what it will be used for. For example, the type of scooter you'd buy for someone who will use it primarily indoors is vastly different from what would be necessary for long trips outside. Another factor to consider is weight and portability: will you need to be able to lift it into a van or other vehicle for transport?
And, of course, you'll need to keep in mind the needs of the person who will be using the mobility scooter; factors like size, ability to use one or both hands, and other personal characteristics can impact which scooters are a good match.
Because so many of the industry's top retailers of mobility scooters have online stores, you can easily find the right one without even leaving home. For people with challenges getting around, this is a huge plus. As you consider which store to use for your scooter investment, here are several factors to bear in mind:
