Allied Van Lines is one of the oldest companies in our evaluation. They've been in business for over 94 years, and have won awards for best customer service, although customers might disagree with that award (stay tuned for more info on that).
Pack and move
Allied offers not just moving services, but they'll help you pack and unpack your belongings as well. They offer options for local, long-distance, and even international moves, which is a standout feature. However, the pricing for Allied is unavailable unless you know which dates you intend to complete your move and the corresponding zip codes, along with your email. However, they do have a virtual estimation service, which will allow you to get an estimate done faster than having someone come out.

Get your estimate through a virtual call
One of the standout features of Allied is its virtual estimate service. Allied offers a virtual in-home estimate to help their agents determine how many possessions you have and give them an idea of what you need to move. The virtual survey is free of charge and will help Allied provide you with a more accurate estimate. The Allied agents work with you via your smartphone or tablet to determine all the factors that go into pricing your estimate. Some of these include:
Easy to work with
The 5-star reviews noted that the company was easy to work with and that communication with the company was clear and easy to conduct. The happy reviewers also felt the movers took care of their possessions and nothing was broken on delivery. However, reviewers who left 1-star ratings disagreed. They disliked that Allied Van Lines moved their possessions from the truck into a storage facility and then back into a truck before delivering it to the new location. A few clients complained that they paid more for Allied than they would have otherwise because of the "name brand,” and another ranted about how Allied was responsible for around $26,000 in damages to property (!).
Broken items and property damage
Despite its long-standing service, Allied Van Lines isn't the most popular with reviewers. The company ranks an average of 2.4 stars across third-party sites and hasn't received higher than a 3.8 average anywhere, although the company is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has received an "A+” rating from them.
Not worth the risk
While working with one of the oldest moving companies might seem like a safe bet, Allied Van Lines' customers are often saying otherwise. With a 2.4-star average, Allied stands out from the competition, but not in a good way. Clients across the board are complaining about damage to their property and more than half of the reviews are 2 stars or lower. If you're looking for the safest move for your belongings, Allied isn't the company for you.
Are you looking to move somewhere new? Or maybe you're heading back to school and need a way to get the contents of your dorm room from point A to point B? There are lots of reasons you need a moving company - like heavy furniture, or maybe you just don't want to deal with the hassle.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the average person moves about 11.7 times in their lifetime. Younger adults tend to move more frequently than older adults. Those who rent move more frequently than homeowners, although they usually have fewer items to move and lower costs. The most popular reasons for people to move include job changes, housing affordability, and family changes/marriage.
No matter what you need to move, or where you need to move it, there are plenty of options out there to help you. But where do you get started? There are so many different moving companies that it can be hard to select the best option for you.
The average cost of using a moving company can vary depending on several factors, such as the distance of the move, the size of the household, and the services provided. For most local moves (under 100 miles), the average cost can range from $150 to$1,000. If you need to move something long-distance (over 100 miles), the average cost can range from $1,000 to $5,000.
However, the fees can vary widely depending on the location, the time of year, and the specific services you take advantage of. Some additional services that can affect the cost of a move include packing and unpacking, loading and unloading, and storage. It is also important to keep in mind that many moving companies will charge additional fees for things like stairs, elevators, long carry, or bulky items.
So how do you choose the best moving company for your needs? There are a lot of factors to consider to ensure a smooth and successful move. If you're not sure where to start, here are a few things to help you with your choices:
