Transform was created by Chris Powell, made famous on the "Extreme Weight Loss" TV show. It shouldn't surprise you, then, that this online fitness platform places a lot of emphasis on shedding some pounds. However, when setting up your account, you can choose from three transformation types: lose weight, get fit and toned while you maintain weight, or gain muscle.
Over 1,500 workouts
The next step will ask you to indicate the type of training you want to do based on the equipment you have. Whether you have access to a gym (at home or elsewhere) or are just working with your own bodyweight, there are plenty of options here - over 1,500 workouts, to be exact. These range from traditional favorites like Yoga and Cross Training to fun sessions like Dance Party.
Get a free consultation if you can
You can try out the Transform app free for a week. However, before jumping in with a trial, you might want to take advantage of Transform's complimentary consultations. There's a calendar link on the site that lets you schedule a 15-minute call with a trainer, to give you an idea of what to expect from the app and get suggestions for which transformation is right for you. Unfortunately, at the time of this review, the calendar wasn't showing any openings in the next few months (which we think could be a glitch and not the actual availability schedule).
Get nutrition + exercise in one package
After your initial seven days, you'll pay either $14.99/month or $38.99/quarter for ongoing access to the Transform app. That's about average in the online fitness industry, but you get a little more for your money here - since it incorporates workouts and nutrition, if you choose to utilize both.
The app is unreliable, especially on Android phones
Compared with other app-based fitness programs we reviewed, Transform doesn't rate quite so well with users. For example, they've received a score of 3.2 out of 5 stars across 1,300+ ratings on Google Play and 4.4 out of 5 stars across 1,200 ratings on the Apple App Store (so maybe it works better on iOs than Android?). We've seen better.
Older reviews are more positive
If you look at older reviews (from 2018 and earlier), there's a decent amount of positive buzz: people liked the workouts and the meal plans and felt like Transform really did help them change their approach to wellness. It's hard to find more recent praise for this app, though: time and again (and especially on Android), users experience glitches that render the platform unusable for weeks (or months) and can't get help from support.
Could be a disappointment
The Transform App is an affordable way to get workouts and nutritional guidance in one package - if you can actually get it to work on your phone, with that being more likely if you have an iPhone. This online fitness platform also assumes you want to move from Point A to Point B in your journey, instead of just accessing an on-demand library of workouts. If that's your thing, you don't risk anything by giving The Transform App a go, but you've got better options you might want to try first.
To answer that question, you should start with an idea of what you're hoping to accomplish. Are you at the very beginning of your fitness journey and need some gentle, encouraging guidance to get started? Do you have a gym membership but you're not quite sure what to do when you get there? Are you frequently traveling for work and looking for a way to exercise no matter if you're in Manhattan or Miami?
There are platforms that fit all of those situations - and so many others. Another consideration is whether or not you're looking to combine nutritional changes with your online fitness choice. Some services give you an all-in-one, with meal plans and workouts to choose from, while others specialize just in exercise.
Either way, most online fitness platforms work in roughly the same way: take advantage of a free trial, then decide if a paid membership is right for you. On a budget? No problem: there are several excellent choices that let you access tons of workouts at no cost. Yes, you'll probably be invited to upgrade to a paid plan, but feel free to ignore that and work out using just the regular content and tools.
