On the LAKE Pajamas website

LAKE Pajamas has a charming origin story: founded by longtime friends Cassandra Cannon and Anne Read Lattimore, the brand grew out of their quest for pajamas that felt both timeless and truly comfortable. What started in Savannah back in 2014 quickly gained traction - first online, then through glowing features in places like Forbes, Town & Country, Vogue, and The Wall Street Journal. LAKE eventually grew its brick-and-mortar presence, too, with stores now in Atlanta, Charleston, Charlotte, Southampton, and Palm Beach. On paper, it sounds like the kind of brand you'd expect to deliver a premium, stress-free pajama experience. But once you start shopping, things get a little less dreamy.

Solid selection of luxe PJs

LAKE offers pajamas for women, men, kids, and babies, along with a growing lineup of casual apparel that sometimes blurs the line between sleepwear and daywear. To keep comparisons consistent across all pajama retailers, we focused on the women's collection and their family-matching options. At the time of our review, there were 62 women's pajama styles (including maternity). The variety spans fabrics, lengths, and silhouettes, but you'll want to use the filters if you're trying to avoid sorting through dresses, sweaters, and other non-PJ categories that sometimes mix into the results. One important limitation: sizing only goes up to a women's XXL (approximately size 18). If you need plus-size options, LAKE simply doesn't offer them.

Family sets require a DIY approach

If you love the convenience of pre-bundled family pajama sets, LAKE isn't the easiest place to shop. Rather than offering grouped listings where you can select each family member's size in one place, you'll usually be building your own set piece by piece. Themes and seasonal prints can help guide you - click on the Holly Jolly jammies for women and then scroll down to see the baby sleeper or kids' long-long set in the same pattern, for instance - but expect to spend time navigating back and forth and double-checking what's actually offered in sizes/styles for the whole family.

Best Pajama Stores

Availability is better than before

In our previous evaluation of LAKE, we encountered lots of issues with sizing availability. Fortunately, during this visit, we only found a handful of patterns and sizes that weren't in stock.

Premium pricing comes with premium brand

LAKE's prices lean high, as expected for a cotton-focused boutique brand. You can expect to pay around $48 for a kids' shorts set or $88 for a women's pima tank gown, with full pajama sets like the DreamModal Kimono Pants Bundle offered at $168. The site offers free shipping on orders over $75 - something most shoppers will hit without trying.

Returns: decent, but with caveats

LAKE offers a standard 30-day return policy, with one nice seasonal perk: items purchased between November 15 and December 15 can be returned through January 15. However, anything marked down is automatically eligible for store credit only. Refund returns come with a $7 shipping fee, though exchanges and store-credit returns are free. And like most other pajama brands, returns must be unworn, unwashed, and in good condition.

A note on fabric care

LAKE is upfront about the fact that 100% cotton shrinks - which is true. They recommend avoiding the dryer altogether, washing on delicate in cold water, laying pieces flat to dry, and treating your pajamas as delicate garments rather than tossing them in with towels or jeans. They also suggest sizing up if you're between sizes. Even with these instructions, many customers report shrinkage or fabric changes, which brings us to the biggest issue.

Best Pajama Stores

Customer feedback remains overwhelmingly negative

While the store's Better Business Bureau rating has improved since our last visit to LAKE, going from a rock-bottom "F" to a close-to-perfect "A-", customer sentiment elsewhere hasn't followed. Across Trustpilot, Yelp, and other review platforms, complaints remain consistent: pajamas shrinking dramatically even with careful washing, fabric discoloration, premature wear, and customer service that's hard to reach and slow to respond (or cranky when they do). That's especially surprising for a premium-priced brand with such strong editorial buzz.

Still not a pajama store we can confidently recommend

LAKE Pajamas has a beautiful brand story, lovely marketing, and a devoted fan base - but in practice, it's hard to overlook the ongoing issues with quality and customer service. The styles are attractive, and the cotton is undeniably soft at first touch, but too many shoppers are disappointed with how their pieces hold up and how difficult it can be to get support when something goes wrong. Given the better-performing (and often less expensive) alternatives available, LAKE still ranks low on our list of pajama stores. Feel free to shop here if you love the aesthetic and don't mind the extra laundry care, but for most people, there are better options elsewhere.

Where is the Best Place to Buy Pajamas?

There's something undeniably comforting about slipping into a pair of pajamas that feel just right, and if you're honest, you probably have a couple of favorites you reach for far more often than the rest. Pajamas may seem simple, but they've actually traveled a long, curious journey through history to get to your dresser drawer.

The word "pajama" comes from "pae jama," a term from Persian and Hindustani meaning "leg clothing," and the style was adopted into Western fashion in the 1800's as a cooler, more comfortable alternative to stiff nightshirts. Over the decades pajamas became more than sleepwear - they turned into a symbol of leisure, relaxation, and, in recent years, an entire lifestyle category. (You've probably seen the matching family sets. Maybe you've even worn them. No judgment.)

Today's pajama trends prove that comfort doesn't have to be boring. You've got buttery-soft bamboo sets for hot sleepers, flannel classics for chilly nights, gender-neutral silhouettes, rompers, luxe satin, organic cotton loungewear you could wear on a video call without raising eyebrows, and color-coordinated sets designed specifically for holiday cards. You'll even find "cooling" fabrics that wick moisture, PJs with hidden pockets, and limited-edition prints so playful you almost feel guilty going straight to bed. Almost.

But the real transformation in pajama shopping has happened online. Instead of wandering through racks, trying to guess whether something will shrink, fade, or feel scratchy, you can browse dozens of brands from the comfort of your actual pajamas. Shopping online lets you compare fabrics, check size guides, read thousands of real-world reviews, and look for sales that brick-and-mortar stores simply can't match.

You also get access to niche and specialty brands you'd never find locally - whether you're hunting for all-natural fibers, inclusive sizing, matching sets for the whole family, or simply a pair of dependable cotton bottoms that won't fall apart after three washes. And when you're shopping online, you can take your time. There's no one hovering nearby asking if you "need another size," and no fluorescent lighting convincing you that you look tired.

Of course, with so many pajama stores popping up online, choosing where to shop can feel surprisingly complicated. Some brands lean heavily into luxury marketing, some are known for bargains, and others have fantastic fabrics but questionable return policies. That's why it helps to have a few simple criteria in mind when you're deciding where to buy your next cozy set. Here's what to look for in a pajama store:

With those criteria in mind, Top Consumer Reviews has already done the digging for you, comparing some of today's most popular pajama stores so you can shop with confidence - and stay as cozy as possible while doing it!

Pajama Store FAQ

What different kinds of pajamas are there?
There are lots of types of pajamas! Sleep shirts, sleep sets with coordinating tops/bottoms, pajama pants paired with a favorite t-shirt, robes, onesies and nighties are the most common options you'll see when shopping for pajamas.
What are the most comfortable pajamas made of?
That's a matter of preference, and probably has a lot to do with temperature. If you tend to overheat at night, you're not going to want heavy flannel at bedtime! For those with texture sensitivities, a satin or silk may be ideal - or irritating! Your most comfortable pajamas will be whatever material and design lets you rest at the right temperature, fits comfortably, and doesn't get in the way of a good night's sleep.
Can I get matching pajamas for my whole family?
Absolutely! That's one of the biggest trends in pajama retailers: selling matching sets for the holidays, for photos, you name it. Not every store carries these sets (especially not if it's a retailer that specializes in women's pajamas only), but you'll find plenty of possibilities for those cute matchy-matchy moments.
Why should I shop online for pajamas?
Selection and pricing, of course. Most brick-and-mortar stores don't carry a huge selection at any given time, and you might have a hard time finding the size and style you want. That's especially true if you're shopping out of season: maybe you need something lightweight for a winter getaway to the Caribbean, or you're taking your Southern self up to Alaska for a once-in-a-lifetime camping trip and your thin cotton jammies aren't going to cut it. Many online stores carry all types of pajamas year-round.
How much do pajamas cost?
You can easily spend less than $20 on pajamas - or over $100! If you're buying matching pajamas for men, women and children, don't be surprised by a price tag of at least $30 per person. Just shopping for yourself? Your cost will depend on the material, design and brand - and it's okay to treat yourself to luxurious sleepwear for many delightful nights of rest, too!
Is shipping expensive when buying pajamas?
How about "free"? Many stores will give you complimentary delivery, though you may need to meet a certain order amount to qualify.
What if my pajamas don't fit? Can I return them?
Check the return policy before you buy, especially if you're usually tough to fit. Most stores let you send your pajamas back within 30 days of purchase, but they'll usually need to be in unworn condition with the tags attached.
Are pajamas really necessary? Can't I just sleep au naturel?
You do you...but picture yourself being awakened by a smoke alarm in the middle of the night and running out to the street, well, buck. Sure, that's not super likely, but it could happen! In some cases, sleeping in the nude would be frowned upon, and if you're a sleepwalker it's probably even more important to have some jammies on!
