Maybe you've found a last-minute travel deal to that far-flung destination you've always dreamed of visiting. Or you've got family members overseas that need you there in a hurry. Whatever the reason, lots of people find themselves in need of a passport and can't afford the weeks (or months) it can take to get it processed through the US Passport Agency at the local post office.
Fortunately, there are several passport services that can expedite the process, allowing you to get your documents in a few weeks, a few days, or even one business day - depending on how urgently you need them (and, as you'd expect, on how much you're willing to pay for the rush). Also, these providers can often help if your destination requires a travel visa to enter.

Passport Visas Express can get your new or renewed passport application processed in 5-7 business days, for the same fee other services charge for taking twice as long. This company has gotten more than 5,000 five-star reviews from clients who are stunned by the speed, knowledge, and friendliness of the support team. PVE makes absolutely certain that they can hand-deliver your application for processing within the timeframe you pay for, before you even pay a cent. Passport Visas Express remains our preferred provider of passport services.
Fastport Passport is the passport service whose name is fun to say ten times fast - but nothing about this company will leave you twisted. With over a million customers since 2003 and a 90% five-star average, you can trust that you'll get what you pay for here, from one-week "emergency" expediting to an 8-week helping hand. Fastport Passport has an intuitive online platform that will walk you confidently through the entire passport process. This continues to be one of our most recommended options for passport services.
Travel Visa Pro was one of very few services still offering 2-3 day passport turnaround times on both new and renewal passports at the time of this review. It'll cost you an arm and a leg (over $2,000) but it may be your only option. This company is knowledgeable, friendly, and well-respected, so whichever timeframe you choose, you can expect a good experience.
TDS is a passport service we recommend. The company has received nearly 4,000 five-star reviews from satisfied clients, and we appreciate the simplicity of the ordering process and the upfront notifications of any known processing delays. Pricing here is comparable with rival services, and there are no hidden fees or surprises when you get to the checkout. Don't hesitate to try TDS if you need to get your passport in hand quickly.
Fast Passport Center used to be tied for our highest rating. This might still be an option that provides crazy-fast service when you need a passport within a week, but it can be hard to reach anyone on the phone to reassure yourself that they'll get it done. We found a lot of outdated information and links on the site, and even the Better Business Bureau had FPC as "under review" at the time of this evaluation. We suggest circling back to Fast Passport Center if you don't find the passport services you need with a higher-ranked provider.
Fast Passports and Visas is just your average passport service, based out of Texas. There's not a lot of customer feedback about FPV, beyond an "A+" rating and accreditation from the BBB. The fees here aren't clearly explained, but at the end of the day they wind up being comparable with other passport providers' costs for processing speeds of 5-7 or 8-10 business days. We don't see any red flags with Fast Passports and Visas, but this service doesn't really compete with our preferred providers.
Expedited Passports and Visas will cost you a lot more for processing your passport. Is it worth it? Not really. The fastest turnaround time here is 5-7 business days, and we're not confident that they're even delivering on that. The BBB gives EPV an "F" rating, and there's no recent feedback to indicate that this passport service is doing much business. Spend less money and go with a more reliable provider instead of Expedited Passports and Visas.
Passports and Visas offers some of the lowest prices for the fastest turnaround times - in theory. $799 to get a passport in five days? Amazing! Unfortunately, the reality lately seems to be quite different. An "F" from the BBB for failing to respond to all 30+ complaints filed there, numerous lowest-possible ratings from customers, and a general downward trajectory don't measure up to what we would expect from a passport service that's been around for over three decades.
VisaHQ is expensive - and not worth the cost. Even if you've used this passport service in the past, we'd advise you to avoid it now. Not only have they gone from an "A+" to an "F" in the Better Business Bureau's rating, but VisaHQ has received lots of extremely negative feedback from clients in recent reviews. Clients are aggravated at spending so much money and getting almost nothing in return. Stay away from this passport service that is frequently described as a scam, and go with a more reputable provider.
Travisa may have been an award-winning passport service ten years ago, but they can't compete with the other companies in our review. The only service you can access online, without making a phone call, is passport renewal - and even then, you fill out a form and provide a credit card number, without any idea what Travisa is going to charge you. We've seen no improvements in this passport service since our last review, and that keeps Travisa at the bottom of our list.
Sounds like a hassle, but the days where travelers could just head out with a driver's license and a birth certificate are long gone. Some people used to specifically book closed-loop cruises (where you leave from and return to the same US port) to avoid having to pay for a passport - and while that's still legal, you could find yourself in trouble if you miss the ship's departure from a destination port and have to get back to the US on your own.
For many reasons, having a passport just makes sense. Adult passports are good for ten years, and youth passports for five, so they can be used as government ID for a long time and in a variety of ways (like when minors fly domestically or need other proof of identity, prior to getting a driver's license).
Now that you're convinced that you need a passport, and you're excited at the idea of being able to get yours quickly, which passport service should you choose? Here are some factors to keep in mind:
