You've likely heard of Hello Fresh, maybe during a podcast break or in a YouTuber's sponsorship segment. Originating from Berlin in 2011 and serving over four million customers across the globe today, it's not just a meal delivery service; it's a global phenomenon. With a stated mission to transform the way we eat, Hello Fresh promises budget-friendly meals, freshness, taste variety, and sustainability, while also tackling food waste. Let's find out if they deliver on those promises.

Deals that make you go "hmm"

Hello Fresh's current promotion seems generous: "Get 18 Free Meals + Free Breakfast Item for Life." Sounds tempting, right? This offer, divided across your first nine boxes, does make you ponder - when breakfast is touted as "free" to everyone who subscribes, is it really free, or just built into the cost? It's food for thought as you weigh the real value of these perks.

Pricing is competitive but not exciting

Hello Fresh offers plans for either 2 or 4 people, with options ranging from 2 to 6 meals per week. The cost per meal starts at $11.49 for a duo sharing two meals and slightly dips to $9.99 for a six-meal plan.

Sample menu yields no fish

You can preview Hello Fresh's Pescatarian meals by looking on the landing page for the heading "Check out our weekly menus" and clicking the link labeled "Pescatarian Recipe Menu" . Strangely, none of the meals for the upcoming week contained any fish: they were all vegan or vegetarian. Some examples were Coconut Curry with Chickpeas, Vegan Mushroom and Soy Ramen, and Sun-Dried Tomato Spaghetti. While those meals technically fit the diet, they're not what most people are picturing when they think Pescatarian. Better luck next week, we hope?

Hidden surcharge to add fish as a protein option

Our hopes here were short-lived. (That might be a new world record in Hope-Dashing, which is not an actual sports event like the 100 meter dash, but wouldn't it be fun to watch if it was?) When we looked into what current customers are saying, we found some concerning reports, such as this one: "I like the food overall but as a Pescatarian I have limited options without having to pay a surcharge every week. There are tons of options for meat eaters without paying any kind of extra fee but this is not so with people who don't want to eat mammal flesh." We're alarmed to hear this, because Hello Fresh doesn't mention a surcharge anywhere in the signup process. It sure seems like a bait and switch to us. To make matters worse, Hello Fresh promised to give the customer a credit, but they didn't even follow through with that.

30 minutes to prep

Hello Fresh ingredients are meant to stay fresh until cooking, but you should eat seafood sooner than other ingredients. Your box will contain recipe cards detailing prep times, which are often under 30 minutes.

Ingredients are not organic

Hello Fresh claims to maintain strict supplier selection processes, adhere to USDA Inspection Guidelines, conduct on-site visits to meat vendors, primarily source domestic meats, ensure hormone-free chicken and pork, and prioritize animal welfare and sustainability. They also state their commitment to sourcing sustainable seafood based on traceability and factors like fish population health, partnering with Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and obtaining additional sustainability certifications. While some of their ingredients are organic, the majority are not: Hello Fresh says they focus instead on providing high-quality, seasonal, and farm-sourced produce to help customers make well-balanced meals and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet.

Recyclable box arrives in 12-hour window

Deliveries for Hello Fresh typically arrive between 8 am and 8 pm. When signing up, customers can select their first delivery date based on available options in their area. Hello Fresh uses specially designed boxes with insulated liners and cooling gel packs for freshness during transit. Upon receiving the box, unpack the ingredients and refrigerate them immediately. Hello Fresh provides instructions for responsibly recycling the packaging materials, including curbside recycling for insulating liners, taking summer liners to a recycling center, and trashing winter liners. Gel packs should be emptied and recycled separately, while the Hello Fresh box can be folded and discarded with other household recyclables. More detailed information can be found on Hello Fresh's dedicated Recycling page.

Easy to skip or cancel

You have control over your Hello Fresh subscription, as they provide options for you to easily skip a week or cancel your plan. To skip a week, you can log into your account, go to "My Menu," select the delivery day you want to skip, and click "Edit Delivery." If you want to cancel your plan, log into your account, click on your name, go to "Account Settings," scroll down to the "Plan settings" page, and click "Cancel Plan." Remember to make these changes at least 5 days prior to your next scheduled delivery. Hello Fresh is at least transparent about their cancellation process and does not try to trap you as a customer, which can't be said for all meal delivery services.

Hello Fresh has a lot of problems

Customers have raised several complaints about Hello Fresh, including issues with food delivered at haphazard temperatures, missing items (including the main protein item), spoiled meat, old produce, and repetitive menu options. It seems like a common experience is the first several orders being high quality (possibly to drive up ratings from positive customer reviews) but the quality dropping off over time. Few people feel like customer service has effectively resolved their complaints - Hello Fresh seems to use the promise of credits to pacify angry customers, but they're not great about actually giving out those credits.

Stay away from Hello Fresh

We wouldn't recommend Hello Fresh as a Pescatarian meal delivery service because there's almost no fish on the menu, according to many reviews. You would be eating vegan and paying an undisclosed surcharge to add fish (which doesn't apply to other types of meat). The quality of the food overall just really isn't that good, especially for the price. We'd recommend you try one of our top services that follows through with their word on making customer complaints right. Hello Fresh is all too happy to take your money, giving you bad produce and lip service in return.

First, there's a growing awareness of the health benefits associated with reducing meat consumption. Pescatarian diets, which include fish and seafood but exclude other animal meats, are often perceived as healthier alternatives. As more people prioritize health and wellness, pescatarian meals emerge as an appealing dietary choice.

Of course, it's hard to deny the convenience of having pescatarian meals delivered straight to your door. In today's fast-paced world, many people struggle to find the time and energy to plan, shop for, and cook nutritious meals. Pescatarian meal delivery services fill this need by providing pre-prepared, ready-to-eat meals delivered right to your doorstep. This eliminates the need for grocery shopping and meal preparation.

Why go Pescatarian? People choose it for health reasons, like lowering the risk of heart disease and maintaining a healthy weight. It's also a choice for those who want to eat in a way that's better for the planet, since eating less meat from land animals can reduce your environmental footprint.

Picking the right Pescatarian meal service can be tough with so many options out there. Here's what to look for:

  • Seafood quality and sustainability. Are the seafood ingredients responsibly sourced, wild-caught, or sustainably farmed for both health and environmental preservation?
  • Variety. Are there lots of different meals to keep things interesting, or just a few that you'll have to repeat?
  • Customizing your plan. Can you change your meals to fit what you like or need? Is it easy to stop orders for a while if you need to? What is the minimum or maximum number of meals you can order per week?
