Is it with a big-name brand or a smaller, local company? The answer is "it depends" . You may find that a lesser-known exterminator takes more time to understand your needs, or that a large company offers a broader package of services that go beyond extermination and into lawn and landscape management, wildlife removal, or even irrigation maintenance.
So, where should you start? Begin with your own assessment of the problem. What pests are you seeing? Do you spot them only once in a while or at any time of day? Where have you seen them in your house or yard? All of this information will help the pest control company have an idea of how pervasive your problem is.

Arrow Exterminators does it all, from basic insect treatments to removal of wildlife - plus handyman services if your home or business needs some work after the critters have done their damage. This is the most full-service pest control company in our review, and the only one to receive a perfect grade and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. Although Arrow's service area only covers 12 states, they're the sixth-largest service in the nation. If you happen to have an Arrow Exterminators branch near you, make them the first company you consider for pest control.
Bulwark Exterminating treats customers like family, paying close attention to detail and making sure to get rid of pests once and for all. All of their technicians are drug tested and background checked, and the company is certified organic in their approach to pest control. Prices aren't the lowest you'll find, but customers say this service is well worth the money: more than 17,000 people have given Bulwark a flawless five-star rating. We highly recommend this pest control company to anyone within their 12-state service area.
Ehrlich stands out among pest control services. Not only do they offer free inspections, but they also don't require customers to sign an annual contract: the company strives to keep your business from month to month instead of locking you into a commitment. This exterminator is part of the Rentokil brand family and services 18 different states with its effective, Green Pro certified system. Customers rave about how happy they are with this pest control company, and we think you'll love them too.
Truly Nolen founded his self-named pest control service all the way back in 1938, and you'll often spot uniquely-decorated company vehicles complete with mouse ears and a tail. This exterminator works in seven different states, offering free inspections and a money-back guarantee that many of its rivals won't match. Plus, new customers can easily get a price quote or schedule service online without having to wait for a call from a representative. Truly Nolen is a great option for pest control.
Only on the market since 2015, Aptive is making some waves in the pest control industry. We found thousands of five-star reviews from customers throughout the United States who say that this service has excellent technicians and effectively exterminates most common pests. We'd like to see more disclosure of terms and conditions on the Aptive website: it's the one factor holding this provider back from earning one of our top rankings.
Massey Services provides not just pest control but also lawn/landscape and irrigation service to over 750,000 customers, mostly in the South. It's one of the few exterminators that offer free, comprehensive inspections, plus a 30-day satisfaction guarantee or your money back on your last scheduled treatment. Unfortunately, customer satisfaction rates aren't what we expected to find from a company that's been around for four decades. We'd suggest looking at a higher-rated pest control company before going with Massey.
Orkin is one of the best-known names in pest control, due in no small part to the fact that they've been around for over a century. This company has over 400 offices around the world, and their service targets all of the pests you might expect: ants, bed bugs, beetles, carpenter ants, centipedes and millipedes, cockroaches, flies, crickets, earwigs, fleas, mites, mosquitoes, moths, rodents, silverfish, spiders, stinging pests, stink bugs, termites, and ticks.
Moxie Pest Control has been around for about 20 years and currently services properties in 18 states. Their basic package covers all of the typical pests you might experience; add-ons are available if you've got issues with bed bugs, termites, moles or voles, or if you need rodent exclusion measures put in place. Your experience with Moxie will depend on the quality of the branch near you, and you should take care to read the contract details before signing up for a year-long plan.
Presto-X is part of the Rentokil brand family and services primarily commercial customers in the Midwest. The website is not very polished and doesn't make it easy to get information about their pest control services, especially for their limited residential coverage area. There's no obvious reason not to like Presto-X, but most people will be better served by an exterminator with a larger footprint in the industry.
Terminix is well-known in the extermination business, but their reputation doesn't match their long history. While we appreciate their easy online quote and scheduling process and their nationwide availability, their pest control service gets lots of complaints. Customers say that the treatments are ineffective, reps can be shady, and there's no refund policy if you're dissatisfied. Terminix gets our lowest rating among pest control companies.
Your next step is to either schedule an inspection or jump right in for a treatment. Depending on the exterminator, you may be able to get a no-obligation, no-cost inspection, though some charge for that service and roll it into the price of your first treatment. Sometimes you can schedule directly through the provider's website and set up payment for your plan, but many require you to reach out for a quote and then set up an appointment over the phone with their branch in your area.
Your pest control plan will depend on several factors: your location, the size of your home and property, the severity of the infestation, and the number of treatments required to get a handle on things. Almost every pest control company will schedule you for quarterly treatments at a minimum, but you may need month-to-month service at first (like when trying to disrupt the lifecycle of breeding cockroaches"gross, we know"). Your plan will likely include unlimited service calls between scheduled visits, so you're covered if you still see bugs or critters crawling around in the meanwhile.
No matter which pest control company you choose, make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions. Many plans require a year-long contract, and you'll be charged a significant cancellation fee if you try to close your account ahead of time - even if you're not happy with the service.
In summary, keep an eye on these criteria as you decide which exterminator to use for pest elimination and prevention:
