If you're concerned about pests in and around your home, you're not alone. According to a recent consumer survey, 93% of people are concerned about insects within their home. It's easy to see why - every year, over 500,000 Americans wind up in hospital emergency rooms suffering from insect bites and stings.
If you have a pest control issue in your home, ignoring it won't make it go away. Once bugs and other pests find a safe place where they can live and breed, chances are they'll multiply, which can make a bad problem far worse. The best way to deal with an infestation is to see the problem for what it is, and deal with it head on.

At Home Pest Control is an online warehouse of do-it-yourself pest control, providing thousands of professional pest control products for purchase and use at home.
Although At Home Pest Control does not offer extermination services like some of the larger pest control companies, you will find a vast array of reasonably priced pest control products addressing virtually every insect or animal pest problem we could think of. There are hundreds of products to address insects; spiders, bedbugs, cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes, wasps and termites all have their own dedicated product list. Additionally there is a section of the website dedicated to rodent control, with several pages worth of various lures and traps from which the consumer can select.
Beyond that there is also a whole section on wildlife control, which is something we don't see with many other pest control providers. This section gives consumers the tools to fight animal nuisance situations around the home, including skunks, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, squirrels and pigeons, among others. At Home Pest Control really has a huge variety of inventory and no matter what your pest problem, you can likely find a proposed solution on their website.
Keep in mind that At Home Pest Control is a warehouse of products, and all of their inventory is made by independent manufacturers. Fortunately, the At Home Pest Control website lists the brands of pest control products they sell, to make it easy to research them and to sort quickly by brand if desired. Brands like Catchmaster, Bell Laboratories and JT Eaton are among several quality pest control companies whose products are offered here. It's helpful to sort by company if you know what you are looking for (Catchmaster for mouse traps, for example), but the website also allows you to quickly and easily sort by pest type.
For example, one click on bedbugs brings up a list of products for bedbug prevention and elimination, another click on cockroaches and you have a list of cockroach fighting products. It is really very simple and easy to navigate around the website, look at details of each product, and then make a purchase using the standard checkout setup. Even better, At Home Pest Control offers free shipping with every order, as well as a 10-day money back return policy, making it an easy decision to use this website to purchase at home pest control products.
At Home Pest Control is the answer for everyone's DIY pest control needs. We give this website our highest marks for value and ease of use for purchasing a wide array of pest control products.
Pest Away is a smaller pest control and extermination company located in New York City and servicing primarily New York and the Tri-State area. For consumers who live elsewhere in the U.S., Pest Away will not be an option, but they are one of the top exterminators in New York for anyone living in or around the city.
Pest Away was founded in 1991 by Jeff Eisenberg, a CPA living in New York City. After he had several bad experiences with local pest extermination services. Jeff developed an effective, eco-friendly pest treatment and a business model that would address the issues with service quality that he had with the pest control services he had used in the past. As the Pest Away website boasts, this service has been very well received by New Yorkers, and has been featured on several local television programs, CNN, Dateline, and the Today Show, as well as being selected "Best of New York" by New York magazine. Pest Away has earned an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and reviews we found elsewhere on the internet were for the most part very positive. Pest Away as a company is not short on accolades, and this should be an important factor for any consumers considering using a pest control service, as many of the big extermination companies are rife with complaints and negative publicity.
The Pest Away website is simple but informative. There is a section entitled "pest education" where consumers can review information on various types of pests, including what to look for to determine what kind of pests someone may be dealing with. There is also a shopping section, so if a consumer doesn't want to pay the higher cost for a professional technician to come evaluate and treat their home or business, they can purchase the eco-friendly Pest Away products and attempt to address their pest problem on their own. We like this feature, as most of the other professional extermination services do not offer a self-service option. This also partially offsets the problem of Pest Away being local to the New York area, as customers from elsewhere could still order the Pest Away products online.
With regards to the cost of a professional extermination service, as with most other exterminators consumers need to call and schedule an appointment with a technician before the cost of the service can be determined. Depending on the severity of the pest problem a treatment could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars up into the thousands of dollars. At least with Pest Away the consumer has the inexpensive option of purchasing products from the website and attempting to address the pest problem on a do-it-yourself basis. Also, with no lawsuits for price gouging or other questionable practices, the consumer can feel confident that any quote for the professional services will be reasonable and fair.
We feel Pest Away is a great bet for any consumers looking for a pest control service in the New York or Tri-State area. The reviews of their service, superior Better Business Bureau rating, and lack of negative publicity such as lawsuits give us confidence that this is a trustworthy company in a field where so many of the big players have faced lawsuits and complaints. The only drawback is that Pest Away is only available to consumers in a very small geographical area.
PrestoX is a professional pest control and extermination company servicing the central and Southern parts of the United States. The focus is on professional evaluation of the pest problem of a consumer's home or business, and professional execution of a pest control plan by PrestoX technicians.
There is a lot of information available on the PrestoX website, although we found the menu system a little confusing to navigate. By searching around a bit we were able to find the usual information on various types of pest problems, information on the products and services offered by PrestoX, contact information, technical support, and a section with listings of all the local offices. The information was all there, but we felt it could have been organized a little more clearly.
The services provided by PrestoX are extensive, including all the usual suspects such as ants, termites and bed bugs, as well as rodents, birds and other "nuisance wildlife" problems. Separate sections exist for commercial and residential customers, so a consumer can quickly choose from services offered for their home or for their place of business. From what we could see, PrestoX has a proposed solution for nearly any pest problem imaginable.
We would have liked to see some testimonials, links to articles about the company, or maybe a link to the PrestoX entry at the Better Business Bureau to give us confidence that consumers have had good experiences with this company. We did our own research and discovered that PrestoX earned an A+ ranking from the Better Business Bureau, and did not appear to have any negative news associated with it, such as lawsuits or mass customer complaints. Most of the reviews we read were positive, and so we developed a feeling of confidence in the PrestoX name. However it would have been nice to see some of this on the PrestoX website; the company would be wise to advertise its strengths.
The process to get a quote is much the same as with the other extermination/pest control companies. There is an 800 number that consumers can call to contact PrestoX, and they will set up a time for a technician to come out to the home or workplace to analyze the pest problem and provide a quote. The cost of the service will vary greatly depending on the specific pest problem, and if it will require a one-time treatment or recurring visits. Overall, the cost of the services seemed about the same as other professional pest control companies. We couldn't, however, find any guarantee or assurance of satisfaction with the service like we see in many other pest control services.
Overall, PrestoX is a strong option for those living in the Midwest and southern states that have commercial pest control needs. They are well rated and have satisfied customers, but we had hoped for a service guarantee clearly spelled out on their website.
Orkin is a nationally known extermination company with branches all across the United States and in Europe as well. They focus on professional evaluation of the pest problem in each individual home or place of business, and the creation of a customized extermination plan implemented by Orkin's professional technicians.
The Orkin website is very modern and professional looking. The main page features a toll-free number to call for service or immediate attention, a menu bar across the top to select from several options such as commercial or personal home pest control, and a section for a consumer to enter information and get a free quote. Scrolling down a little there is a helpful "ask the Orkin Man" box where consumers can type a question and get answers on specific pests or problems. There is also a "research a pest" section that lists all the kinds of pests that Orkin can handle, with pictures and details of each pest easily accessible.
Additionally, there is a link to a page that describes the Orkin training facility that they have built to train their managers and technicians, and a detailed outline of the program all Orkin employees must go through before they can start working in pest control. It is an impressive program requiring over 160 hours of classroom and hands-on training, and it highlights the science, research and technology Orkin uses to stay at the top of the pest control business. Finally, the website highlights the Orkin guarantee, which states if the pests return after 30 days, they will come back to treat your home again for free.
The real question with Orkin is the cost. There is no way to get a quote on the website, and even calling the toll-free service number will not result in receiving a cost estimate. The only way to receive a price quote is to schedule a technician visit to the home or business. This initial consultation is "free" but there is a service charge for the consultation that is added to the bill if the consumer decides to purchase a service package. There are some single treatment options that start as low as $400, but depending on the severity of the pest problem, an ongoing contract may be necessary and the cost for these can go into the thousands. Not only that, but with an ongoing contract there are annual fees to pay, even if no technician visits are required.
Additionally, we were able to find many complaints about Orkin, from price gouging, to poor service, to several class action lawsuits that have been filed against the company. Some consumers have good reviews about their experience with Orkin, but many others have complaints about tricky guarantees, hidden fees, poor clean-up and returning pests. We reviewed the Better Business Bureau website and discovered that some Orkin locations are accredited by the BBB and some are not. This is common among the big pest control companies since each branch is run separately by different branch managers.
Orkin is a very well-known company that has been in the extermination business for a long time. If you need a professional exterminator we would advise you to consider Orkin, but do some research on the local branch before entering into a contract, to make sure the branch is one of the reputable ones. With improvements in customer satisfaction and reviews, this provider could improve to a higher rating.
Terminix is a widely known professional extermination companies in America, nationally advertised with branches in all 50 states. Terminix provides professional evaluation of pest problems and delivers customized pest relief plans using Terminix's professional exterminators.
The Terminix website is robust and sleek, as you would expect from one of the big name pest control services. The main page features a toll-free number to call and a rotating window highlighting some common pest problems. There is a menu bar across the top with links to a "why Terminix" section that highlights the benefits of using Terminix over other pest control providers, a link to a list of their services, and a link to a customer service section. What we really liked about the "our services" section is that the cost for many of the various services are listed right on the website. This is uncommon in the pest control industry, as most exterminators will require a visit to the customer's home or office to evaluate the pest problem before making any kind of cost estimate.
Just under this section is a link to the Terminix guarantee, which states there is a 100% money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with the service. Further inspection of this guarantee, however, reveals that the guarantee is in effect only as long as the customer maintains one of the ongoing service plans. So if a customer has the pest plan contract for $107 per quarter for example, Terminix will come back as often as necessary to rid the home or office of pests. If the customer allows that contract to lapse, the guarantee lapses as well.
The main question with Terminix is what you will end up paying. Although there are some basic services listed with a monthly or quarterly cost quote on the website, the listed price does not take into account the square footage of the home or office in question, or other products that will be used during the treatments such as pest bait. The only way to receive a true quote is, as with the other big name exterminators, to have a technician visit the home or place of business. We read many consumer reviews online that said their total cost was not given to them until they signed a contract, and that the final cost could be up into the thousands. Similar to the other big name exterminators we reviewed, it seems there are many hidden costs with the service.
Also like the other big name exterminators we reviewed, we were able to find a laundry list of consumer complaints about Terminix. There have also been class action lawsuits filed against Terminix for things like falsifying evaluation reports and failing to deliver services as promised. Some consumers also have very good reviews about their experience with Terminix, and again like other big name pest control providers, this is because each Terminix branch is run independently. The Better Business Bureau website shows some Terminix locations are accredited by the BBB and some are not, and some have had complaints while others have not.
Terminix has been in the extermination business for a long time and is one of the largest pest control services in the country. If a consumer needs a professional exterminator we would advise they do some research on the Terminix branch they are considering before contracting with them to ensure the branch is accredited and has no complaints filed against it. We recognize Terminix as a reputable provider throughout the U.S.; their rating could easily become higher with fewer negative customer reviews.
Truly Nolen is a growing force in the world of professional pest control. Founded in Arizona, Truly Nolen has expanded primarily in the Southern and Western parts of the United States, but also has branches in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, and a handful of other states as well. They are a traditional extermination company with the focus on professional analysis of the pest problem and application of a pest control plan by Truly Nolen technicians.
The Truly Nolen Website is attractive and informative. On the main page there is a rotating window of topics, highlighting some common pest problems and the various services they offer to address each. Consumers can select links to pest control, termite control, and rodent control or lawn services to quickly navigate to their particular pest problem. Each detail page outlines the steps Truly Nolan takes to address the pest problem that was selected. There is the standard section with information on all the common pests, and a search box to find a local branch and schedule a free inspection.
As with most other professional pest control services, the costs of the Truly Nolen services are not listed on the website. There is a small section of coupons offering things like $25 off pest control services, but no indication of what the total cost for pest control services would be. A consumer needs to schedule a free visit and a technician will come out to the home or place of business to provide an analysis of the pest problem and a proposed solution. Then depending on the severity of the pest problem, the cost could vary from a few hundred dollars to an ongoing service plan that could run thousands of dollars a year.
Truly Nolen offers a guarantee, but it is hard to determine exactly what is covered. The guarantee states that "we guarantee satisfaction or your money back for your last scheduled service." If a consumer has had 10 scheduled exterminations and the pests are still a problem, it would seem to us that receiving money back for only the last service call isn't really much of a guarantee. Then again, none of the big extermination services seem to have true, unconditional money back guarantees.
Similar to other big extermination companies, the internet is full of very serious consumer complaints regarding Truly Nolen's services. As expected, when we reviewed the Better Business Bureau website we found some of their branches were accredited, but most were not. We will give the same advice here as we gave with the other big pest control companies: consumers should research their local Truly Nolen branch before deciding whether or not to contract them for their services. Expanding their service area and offering a more robust guarantee would bring Truly Nolen up in our ratings.
