If you've visited your veterinarian lately, you may have been shocked at the cost of even the most basic prescriptions. From regular medications like flea and heartworm prevention to products for conditions like cancer or congestive heart failure, veterinary clinics can upcharge by as much as 100% of the wholesale cost - and even tack on hefty dispensing fees.
Is it any wonder that an increasing number of pet owners are turning to online vet pharmacies for their Pet Meds? There are many trusted providers that offer the same prescription medications that you can get from your veterinarian, often at a fraction of the cost. And, most of these online stores carry a great selection of "extras", ranging from your dog's daily kibble to your kitty's favorite treats.

Chewy is one of the newest retailers of Pet Meds on the market: you've probably seen their ads online, on TV, and in print media. You may have even driven past one of their 11 corporate buildings or fulfillment centers located in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Indiana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Florida. With over 1,000 brands in stock and a robust supply of pet medications of practically every variety, Chewy is the name to know for everything your Fido, Fluffy, or Tweety needs and wants.
There's no other website that makes it easier to find the right supplies and Pet Meds. You can shop by pet, brand, today's deals, or go directly to the pharmacy link at the top of the page. The search function also takes you right to what you need. We also really like the "Watch and Learn" section towards the bottom of the main page: need to know how to give your pet his meds? Or when to transition your kitten from wet to dry food? You'll find all of that and more on the site, including helpful articles on the blog.
So, how does this store measure up when it comes to Pet Meds? Chewy did not offer our comparison product, the basic Heartgard 6-month supply for small dogs. But, their price on the most comparable item - Heartgard Plus - was lower than any other store we checked: $23.65, or $22.47 when set up as an automatically recurring delivery. Chewy's auto ship program gives you a discount of 30% (up to a maximum discount of $20) on your first automatic shipment, so that's definitely worth keeping in mind if you have a particularly expensive medication for your pet.
If you need your order fast without breaking the bank, Chewy is your best bet. You'll get free 1-2 day shipping on any orders over $49. If your Pet Meds don't meet that minimum spend, you'll have no problem finding some extras to throw in the box: Chewy offers supplies for dogs, cats, birds, horses, fish, birds, reptiles, and small pets like guinea pigs and chinchillas.
Chewy also wins "paws down" when you consider customer satisfaction. Over more than 400,000 reviews, this retailer has a 99% positive track record with an average rating of 5/5 stars. From low prices to world-class customer service, the compliments customers give Chewy are glowing and extremely satisfied. This reputation is further shown by the company's "A+" rating and accreditation with the Better Business Bureau.
Speaking of customer service, Chewy is the only retailer we surveyed that offers round-the-clock help. Whether you want help via live chat, phone or email, you'll find it available at the link at the top of the page. You'll also get a 100% unconditional satisfaction guarantee on every order. While this doesn't apply to prescription medications, if you get Pet Meds that are incorrect or damaged, Chewy will exchange it or issue a refund on a case-by-case basis.
Chewy has the internet's best selection of Pet Meds and other supplies at the absolute best prices. And, their customer service is unparalleled, truly making the process a pleasure for pet owners everywhere. For all of these reasons, Chewy is our first-place winner for Pet Meds.
Founded by a loving pet owner in 1998, PetCare Rx was created to help pet owners get the meds and other products they need at reasonable prices.
At first glance, buying your Pet Meds through PetCare Rx doesn't look like a good deal. When we priced out the basic Heartgard for small dogs, their cost was much higher: $31.83 with a promotional discount of 20%. That's much higher than other sites we reviewed.
The way to really save money with PetCare Rx is through their PetPlus membership program. You'll pay an annual fee of $50 to get the following benefits:
According to the company, the average member gets a savings of approximately $250/year using the membership program - but better yet, PetCare Rx will refund the difference if you don't save at least $50. And yes, on that Heartgard we mentioned? Your cost with PetPlus would be a mere $7.
You'll find plenty of ways to use that 20% discount on all products besides Pet Meds too. PetCare Rx has almost everything you could need for dogs and cats, from leashes and collars to furniture and grooming supplies. You won't find anything beyond cats and dogs, however, so you'll need to look elsewhere if you're looking for treats for your iguana or a new terrarium for your tarantula.
Whether you join the PetPlus program or not, you'll still earn 1 rewards point in PetCare Rx's complimentary program on any product, and double points on all Pet Meds. While the rewards aren't huge - $3 off on future purchases for every 100 points you earn as PetPlus member or $0.50 for non-members - it's still a nice plus to save a little money.
PetCare Rx offers an automatic delivery program like most of their competitors. However, unlike other retailers, this company doesn't offer any discounts for orders set up as auto ship purchases.
For the most part, customers are pleased with the prices and service offered by PetCare Rx. The company has an "A+" rating and is accredited by the BBB. The one common complaint is the length of time for delivery. Unless you pay extra for expedited shipping, you'll get Standard delivery, which arrives at your door "within 3-7 business days". We found more than a few customers who ordered during a holiday period that also included weekends and were disappointed that their Pet Meds took two weeks to arrive.
Because of the significant savings offered by the PetPlus program, PetCare Rx should be on your list of sites to shop when looking for Pet Meds and other dog/cat supplies at the best prices.
From Fido's flea medication to Polly's parrot antibiotics, you'll find it and more at Allivet. Headquartered in Florida, this trusted pet pharmacy has been in business since the early 90s and has a great reputation for affordability and customer service.
In fact, Allivet is one of just a handful of Pet Meds retailers we reviewed that offers extended customer service hours: Monday-Friday from 8A to 7P (EST), and even on Saturdays from 9A to 5P. This company is also licensed as a pharmacy in all 50 states.
Prescriptions can be sent directly from your vet, submitted as an original paper prescription via mail, or you can submit your vet's information and have Allivet contact them directly.
At the time of our review, Allivet carried our comparison product, a six-month supply of Heartgard tablets for dogs weighing less than 25 pounds, at a price of $28.99. This was 5-10% higher than most of the Pet Meds stores in our review. It was also listed as being on backorder with the manufacturer, even though it was available at other online veterinary pharmacies. Helpfully, the product listing for Heartgard had a big red button that said, "View Alternatives" and a listing of comparable products. You'd have to get a different prescription from your vet, though, if your dog had already been given a script for a specific brand of medication.
But, on many Pet Meds, Allivet can definitely save you money compared with buying them at the vet's office. You might see some products that say "see price in cart"; we encourage you to give that a try, because we found huge savings over manufacturer prices. For example, a three-month supply of flea and tick preventative Bravecto had a list price of approximately $52, which was the same price we were quoted at our local vet clinic. But, after putting it in our cart at Allivet, we got it at an incredible discounted price of $39.99. Multiply that by the four times a year your dog will need to take it, and you've scored an extra $48 in your pocket.
That product, along with many other Pet Meds and supplies offered by Allivet, can be set up to ship automatically. Whether you choose to have your deliveries every two weeks or every six months (or some other time in between), you'll save 5% on each order.
You'll get additional perks through Allivet's free rewards program. For every $250 you spend, you'll get a $5 discount on future purchases. Just keep the fine print in mind: all rewards expire a year after you earn them, and they can't be combined with coupons or other discounts.
If you take a look at some of the whopping 70,000+ reviews linked at the bottom of the Allivet screen, you'll see lots of happy customers. Allivet averaged 4.7 out of 5 stars when we were reviewing the site, and we found comments describing savings of as much as 65% compared with buying Pet Meds from the vet. Lots of people said that their pet's medications always arrive within a few days of placing the order, and that Allivet takes good care to make sure any refills are approved on time. An "A+" rating and accreditation with the BBB are further proof that Allivet really delivers when it comes to Pet Meds and other products for pets, horses, and farm animals.
Because of this fantastic reputation over more than two decades of being in business, along with extremely competitive pricing on in-stock items, it's easy to recommend checking out Allivet for your Pet Meds and other pet supplies.
If you like the idea of buying Pet Meds from a small business rather than a big company, Vet Approved Rx is a good choice. Created by Dr. Barry Miller, a veterinarian with two decades of experience, this service aims to give customers more expertise than they'd find at a larger, more generalized store for pet medications. Even though it's a smaller retailer, Vet Approved Rx enjoys a five-star rating over more than 4,000 customer reviews and an "A+" rating with accreditation from the Better Business Bureau.
You'll see this attention to pet owners' needs in the easy-to-navigate layout of the site, with dropdowns for Dogs, Cats, Horses, Holistic & Natural items, Pet Pharmacy, Pet Education, and A to Z Symptoms. Check out the "Ask Dr. Barry" blog too, where you'll find helpful information ranging from articles on how to keep pets safe during winter months to videos giving pro tips for trimming your pet's nails.
Vet Approved Rx has taken great steps to increase their inventory since our last review. They now offer a variety of products beyond Pet Meds, including food and treats, food and water bowls, and grooming tools. But they still came up short when it came to our comparison product, Heartgard for small dogs. This store only carried the Plus version that includes a preventative for hookworms, roundworms and other parasites. It was priced at $28.99, which is average. The company also seems to have dropped its price matching policy while keeping their 100% satisfaction guarantee.
We also noticed that prescriptions cannot be shipped to North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, or Washington DC. This likely means that Vet Approved Rx has not yet secured licensing in those states.
If you sign up for Vet Approved Rx's email newsletter, you'll save 10% on your first order. Just click on the "Sign Up and Save 10%" box in blue on the left side of the site.
This business has a customer service team that takes calls from 8A-5P (CST) on weekdays and from 8A-1P on Saturdays. Customers rave about how helpful the representatives are, how quickly their orders are delivered, and above all, how much money they save compared with what they'd pay at their own vet's office.
While Vet Approved Rx has some limitations - a few states that aren't eligible for delivery, no products for exotic pets, and so on - the cost savings and excellent customer service more than make up for that. This is a supplier of Pet Meds that is worth considering.
For many years, 1 800 Pet Meds has been one of the most familiar names in veterinary pharmacies online. With more than 10 million customers over the past two decades and more, the company is licensed in all 50 states and is accredited by both the Pharmacy program and the Better Business Bureau.
It's probably not surprising, with a name like 1 800 Pet Meds, that this store focuses on medications. They offer other products too, like grooming tools, beds, and feeders, but you'll have to go to the Supplies tab to find those. You also won't find products for anything other than dogs and cats, so if you're shopping for your horse or iguana, you won't find anything on this site.
In order to compare apples to apples, we looked at the price of a commonly-prescribed preventative for heartworm in dogs, Heartgard. 1 800 Pet Meds came in at a significantly higher price than most of the stores we reviewed: $31.04 for a 6-month supply, compared with other retailers offering it for under $30. That price also reflected a 25% off promotion that was running at the time, making the store's regular price even more expensive.
That might not seem like a big cost difference, but when you look at more costly medications, you'll feel the impact on your wallet. For example, Galliprant is used to handle osteoarthritis in dogs: 1 800 Pet Meds' price on a 90-tablet bottle was $204.99 with that 25% discount, but we found it for under $185 at least one of the other retailers we surveyed.
One strange thing we saw as we browsed the site: initially, there was a 25% discount featured in the yellow box at the top of the page. But, after clicking around on several pages, that discount increased to 30%. We'll gladly take the extra savings, but customers would probably be unhappy if that happened in reverse (i.e. the discount started at 30% while on one page and then decreased to 25% while surfing the site).
Unlike most of the providers of Pet Meds in our review, 1 800 Pet Meds doesn't have an auto ship program that allows you to have your deliveries scheduled in advance (usually with a discount of 5% on those automatic orders). They do remind you via email when you're due to reorder, but you'll have to take the time to submit the order yourself.
Where this store shines is their 100% satisfaction guarantee. There's no fine print or exclusions: if you changed your mind on your order, bought the wrong amount, your pet didn't like it or it didn't work, 1 800 Pet Meds will give you your money back. There are some specific rules you have to follow if you used a heartworm medication and your pet got heartworms anyway, but that's the only product-specific terms you'll need to worry about.
1 800 Pet Meds is still a reputable pharmacy for dogs and cats, but in recent years they've been surpassed by more affordably-priced retailers. But, if you find the Pet Meds you need and they happen to be on sale, you can trust that your experience with this retailer will likely be a good one.
Headquartered in Nebraska, Pet Supplies 4 Less opened its online store in 2001 and sells Pet Meds and other products for all kinds of animals: dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds, horses, and more.
Pet Supplies 4 Less didn't carry our comparison item, the Heartgard for Dogs up to 25 lbs. They did have the Heartgard Plus version of the product, which sold for $25.79 in a 6-dose package. Even though shipping is usually only free for orders of at least $69, the Heartgard Plus was listed as having free shipping.
Pet Supplies 4 Less offers an automatic shipping service on some products. When you opt to have your orders delivered on a set schedule, you'll get a discount of 5%. We're not sure which items are eligible; most of the ones we looked at - from the Heartgard listed above to Cosequin and other OTC products - didn't show auto ship as an option. After digging around, we found a few (like Feliway for cats) that could be delivered in timeframes ranging from every week to every 6 months.
The site itself is less polished than some of Pet Supplies 4 Less's larger-name competition. For example, we found a holiday promotion on the site that was more than a year old, and a promo for K9 Advantix that was no longer valid.
It's important to note that all Pet Meds that are prescription-based are fulfilled by a third-party company, Pet's Choice Pharmacy in Kansas. So, if you are ordering both medication and supplies, your order will probably ship from two different locations and not arrive on the same day. Pet's Choice Pharmacy is licensed to fill medications for delivery in all states except North Carolina.
You'll need to get a prescription from your vet to Pet Supplies 4 Less in care of Pet's Choice. On the order screen, choose the prescription method in the dropdown box: fax directly from your vet's office, mail in the original paper prescription, have your vet call their toll-free number or request that Pet Supplies 4 Less/Pet's Choice contact your veterinarian directly.
Pet's Choice had no listing with the BBB at the time of our review, and they only had a few customer reviews on their Google listing. Those reviews averaged 3 out of 5 stars, with some customers getting great service and others saying their Pet Meds went undelivered and calls/emails unanswered for over a week from the time the order was placed.
On the other hand, Pet Supplies 4 Less has a good "A-" rating with the Better Business Bureau, and there were several very positive customer reviews on their BBB listing.
Overall, Pet Supplies 4 Less is reputable, competitively priced, and stocked with a good selection of other supplies in addition to Pet Meds. While several other sites offer a more intuitive customer experience, Pet Supplies 4 Less earns a spot in the middle of the pack as a decent choice for buying pet medications and other items for your animal companions.
Canada Pet Care's goal is to provide name-brand, non-prescription medications for dogs, cats, birds, and horses at affordable prices. A veterinarian within the company oversees the products that are manufactured and sourced from third party wholesalers. The brands sold by Canada Pet Care include Bayer, Merial, Elanco, Pharmachem Laboratories, Zoetis, Medpet, MSD, Cipla Vet, and more.
Covers the basics
The selection at Canada Pet Care is enough to cover the basic needs of your pet, but isn't as extensive as some competing companies. If you're buying medication for a dog, there are a total of 73 products. For cats, there are 44 products, 12 for birds, and 10 for horses. For issues like fleas and ticks, joint pain, behavioral issues, tapeworm, and other common problems, there is a selection of medication. However, there isn't a lot to choose from.
Free shipping
At the time of this review, on the homepage of Canada Pet Care's website, they were offering a 12% discount on all orders if you used a code at checkout. They frequently run sales and offer discounts when shopping here. Shipping is always free and customers have the option of paying $4.99 for tracked shipping so they can view their order movement and delivery dates.
Accessible customer service
If you have any questions about the medications sold by Canada Pet Care, you can chat with a customer service representative right when you reach their site. Someone is always ready to help, so this should give you peace of mind as you shop. You can also call them at their toll-free number and speak to a representative over the phone or send them an email.
Mixed reviews
Unfortunately, the Better Business Bureau does not have a rating for Canada Pet Care. Feedback from customers found other places online are average. There are some complaints about slow shipping and issues tracking packages since they actually manufacture and ship their medications from other countries. Some customers believe they've received counterfeit medications that did not work for their pets. However, there are also a lot of happy customers who appreciate being able to shop for medications online and have them safely delivered to their house.
Money-back guarantee
Luckily, if you have an issue with your order when it arrives, it is backed by Canada Pet Care's 100% money-back guarantee. Within 7 days of receiving your order, you can contact customer service and they will provide information about their returns procedure and issue a refund. In addition, if a customer does not receive their order within 30 days (or 21 days according to a different page on the website), Canada Pet Care will either reship the order or issue a full refund.
Not a top choice
Overall, Canada Pet Care isn't a total scam, but they aren't the most reliable place we recommend shopping for medications. When it comes to spending money and needing to get your animal urgent relief, there should be no messing around with companies that may or may not deliver. For this reason we suggest buying pet medications from a store with a higher rating.
Entirely Pets is based in California and has been delivering Pet Meds and other supplies since 1999. Their online store offers a nice variety of supplies for cats, dogs, fish, birds, reptiles, small pets like rabbits and ferrets, and even horses and other livestock.
All of the medications sold by Entirely Pets are FDA- and EPA-approved. You'll find a wide variety of available prescription products, ranging from Apoquel and Rimadyl for inflammation to Bravecto for flea and tick prevention.
When considering our comparison product - Heartgard for Dogs up to 25 lbs., 6 chews - Entirely Pets came in at $25.79. Given that shipping is free on orders over $39, it would be worth it to select the 12-dose option for $46.99. Additional savings come through an auto ship option; you'll get a discount of 5% on every order that you have delivered on the schedule you select. This retailer offers price matching, if you find your Pet Meds or other items cheaper on another site. You'll need to call Entirely Pets toll-free number to request a price match prior to placing your order.
At the time of our review, Entirely Pets was not able to deliver Pet Meds to addresses in Idaho, Montana, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, Maine, Vermont, or New Hampshire.
Navigating the Entirely Pets website was challenging. Because we were shopping for Pet Meds, it directed us to a section of the site specifically for their pharmacy. When we clicked on some of the links at the bottom of that page, like Rewards Program and FAQ, we were taken back to an info page that didn't give us those details. We had to go back to the main Entirely Pets page (not Pharmacy) to get those links to work. The site also has conflicting information between the main site and the pharmacy page: is shipping free on orders over $39 or over $85? Is the fee for shipping smaller orders $2.95 or $5.95? We spotted several spots like that with different information and typos that left us feeling less than confident in Entirely Pets' professionalism.
Eventually, we found more information on the rewards program: you'll get one point for every dollar you spend. Those points can be redeemed for discounts on future purchases.
If you need to make a return, you'll need to do so within 30 days of your purchase date. The company only accepts returns on unopened items, and you may be charged a restocking fee of 20% on your refund.
At the bottom of the Entirely Pets site, there is a green checkbox that says the site is Pharmacy Verified. But, it's not the same logo as the Pharmacy site, and we weren't able to find Entirely Pets on their list of verified veterinary pharmacies. On a more positive note, the company's listing with the BBB shows that Entirely Pets was licensed with the Board of Pharmacy in California. And, the company enjoys accreditation with the BBB along with an "A+" rating.
But customer experiences were not consistently what you'd expect for an "A+" business. We found quite a few reviews that described duplicated orders, difficulties in getting resolution from Entirely Pets' customer service representatives, and - like we discovered - conflicting information when it came to prices. Some people reported being charged a higher price than what was in their order emails and only getting their money refunded by filing a dispute with their credit card companies.
Getting the right prescription and the guidance you need to administer it properly is the most important part of any purchase of Pet Meds. Unfortunately, our experience with Entirely Pets didn't inspire much confidence that we'd get that kind of expertise. We think you'll have a more satisfying experience with one of the higher-rated sources of Pet Meds that we reviewed.
Jeffers is a well-established animal supply company, in business for over four decades and with a solid accreditation and "A+" rating with the BBB. If you've got something really unique in your home menagerie - an alpaca? a primate? a bear?! - this may be the only store that carries the supplies you need. Of course, if your pets are the more traditional kind, you'll find plenty for dogs, cats, horses and birds too.
Biggest selection for dogs
The main categories of medications sold by Canada Vet are for dogs, cats, cage and aviary birds, horses and ponies, reptiles and snakes, and rodents and small mammals. There are over 320 dog supplies, 115 cat supplies, and only 22 products for all other pets. You can shop by searching for the medication you're looking for or browse categories of ailments like dewormers, dental care, digestive aids, grooming, wound care, nutritional, and more.
Good savings
Canada Vet boasts that most of their products cost 30-60% less than recommended retail prices in the US. If the total price of the products a customer needs to buy are cheaper on another US or Canadian pet pharmacy site, Canada Vet will match the price. Another way to save is by signing up to be on Canada Vet's email list. You'll get $5 off your first order. It's not much, but every penny counts! Any order over $98 qualifies for free shipping and anything less comes with a standard shipping fee of $7.95.
No counterfeits or substitutions
Canada Vet guarantees that customers will receive the products they ordered without having to worry about counterfeits or substitutions. Orders will typically arrive within 28 days since they ship from Canada and other parts of the world. For over-the-counter products, Canada Vet will give customers a refund if they change their mind and send their order back unused and in saleable condition.
Look elsewhere
A glaring issue with Canada Vet is their "F' rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This is due to their failure to respond to customer complaints. Another big issue is that after waiting weeks for orders, people have complained that they either end up with nothing or get charged expensive import fees. Customers generally don't feel like Canada Vet is always a reliable place to purchase medications. They also don't have as wide of a selection as some higher rated pet pharmacies. Needless to say, we don't recommend Canada Vet as your first stop when looking for pet medications.
If you sign up for the Jeffers email list, you may be able to get an extra 10% off your first order. Just look for the pop-up as you browse the site. You can also get free economy shipping in the contiguous United States if your order is over $49.
The search feature for the Jeffers site was confusing at best. When we looked for our comparison product, Heartgard for Dogs, our results took us to a product page for DogSure Meal Replacement Powder.
Looking more closely at what the company offers in terms of Pet Meds, the selection is definitely not as good as what you'll find on our highest-ranked sites. For example, searching just for "heartworm" led to zero results. The only products we found that were what you'd expect for Pet Meds were flea and tick products, preventatives that are available over the counter and - strangely - a whole host of vaccines! Some states prohibit buying those, so if you're looking to administer your dog's rabies or parvo vaccine, you'll need to make sure that's legal where you live.
That's probably why Jeffers isn't Pharmacy verified: they don't carry many Ped Meds for purchase. The company is reputable and offers a lot of products for animals of all varieties, but when it comes to the medications you'll need for your pet, you'll probably have to shop somewhere else. Please consider one of the higher-ranked retailers in our review.
However, you should check with your vet to make sure that you will be able to get a prescription that you can submit to the online Pet Meds pharmacy that you choose. Recently, some offices have been reluctant to give customers prescriptions because of concerns over the safety and reputation of getting those medications from anywhere other than the veterinarians themselves.
If you or your veterinarian have any concerns, one way to ensure that you're getting authentic products that haven't been counterfeited is to look for a Pharmacy verification. This logo is typically found at the bottom of the site and indicates that the retailer has been vetted - no pun intended - by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). While online retailers of medications for pets can still be reputable without the Pharmacy label, having that verification can give you extra peace of mind when taking care of your favorite furry family member.
In addition to looking for the Pharmacy label, there are several criteria that can help you narrow down the options when deciding where to buy your pet's medications. Keep in mind the following as you browse each site:
