Milk Bar Review 1 Star Rating

Milk Bar

1 Star Rating
  • 3 pie flavors to choose from: Chocolate Milk Bar, Milk Bar, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch (sold out at the time of our review)
  • $53 per pie
  • $15 for standard shipping, $30 to $65 for express
  • Free standard shipping on orders of $100+
  • In business since 2008

If you're thinking you've heard of Milk Bar on a Netflix show, you're right. Christina Tosi, the mastermind behind this trendy dessert brand, was featured on "Chef's Table”, and her mission is all about turning nostalgic home-baked flavors into iconic treats. Milk Bar has been serving up goodies since 2008, and they deliver pies and other desserts nationwide.

Only 3 flavors of pie

If you're here for pie, Milk Bar keeps it simple with just three options: Chocolate Milk Bar, Milk Bar Pie, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch. Unfortunately, at the time of our review, the last one was sold out - leaving you with even fewer choices. While these pies are undeniably unique and playful, the limited selection might leave pie lovers wanting more.

Best Pies

Pies are definitely tasty-sounding

But, just so you have an idea of Milk Bar's take on pies, let's dig in and see what these treats are like. We personally love the idea of the Chocolate Milk Bar Pie: it's got a chocolate chip cookie crust, a fudgy chocolate filling, and it's dusted with chocolatey powdered sugar. They do describe it as being "limited number” and "holiday”, but we spotted it on the menu at various times of the year - so don't lose hope if you're trying to order in that no-holiday stretch of August and September. This pie is the cocoa-based version of the classic Milk Bar Pie, which has an oat cookie crust and a "sticky, buttery, salty-sweet filling”.

Some discounts are available

Both pies sell for $53 (and we can't tell you how much the Chocolate PB version would cost when it's back in stock, because it only displayed "sold out” in the pricing area). Want to save a little? You might get a discount if you order enough. We noticed a $15 off $80+ deal if you enter your email, and shipping is free when you spend $100 or more. Otherwise, standard shipping costs $15, and express options range from $30 to $65. That means it might make sense to stock up on pies or mix in some cookies and cake truffles to hit that free shipping threshold.

Important details can be hard to find

When you order a pie from Milk Bar, you can place your order up to 30 days ahead of time - but you can't specify an exact delivery date. They recommend that you order at least 2-3 days in advance of when you'd like your pie to arrive. Oddly, that information was in the "Product & Storage Details” section of the pie page…where, at least on the chocolate version, there weren't any actual details about how the pie arrives (frozen? fresh?), whether you need to bake it, or if you can pop it in the freezer for longer-term storage. We had to jump over to the classic Milk Bar Pie to learn that it arrives fresh, should be refrigerated immediately or frozen, and can be enjoyed at any temperature. Your pie should keep in the fridge for a week, or up to a month in the freezer.

An "F” from the BBB and other reputation problems

How about reputation? Here's where things get a little less sweet. Milk Bar has a rocky reputation with customer service. Their Better Business Bureau rating is an "F”, mostly because they haven't responded to a few complaints. More troubling are the reviews on Google, where over 30% of customers have rated the company with just 1 or 2 stars. The main gripes? Long delivery times, no response from customer support, and desserts that didn't arrive in great condition. Imagine opening up a box of pie that you paid express shipping for, only to find it dried out or crumbled - that's been the experience for more than a few people.

Pick a different pie delivery company

Our conclusion? With just three pies to choose from (two if one continues to be sold out), high shipping fees unless you spend over $100, and a spotty track record for customer satisfaction, Milk Bar isn't your best bet for pie delivery. While their pie flavors are certainly unique, the overall experience is likely to leave you feeling less than impressed. This is the lowest-ranked option among the pie shops on our list.

Pie Delivery FAQ

Absolutely! Most pie delivery services use advanced packaging techniques, like vacuum sealing and insulated containers with gel packs, to keep pies fresh during transit. Many also ship overnight or via expedited services for peak freshness.
It depends on the vendor. Most pies are flash-frozen to lock in flavor and need to be thawed before serving, but some companies offer pies that are shipped fresh and ready to enjoy right out of the box. Check the product details to know what to expect.
You can find just about any pie you're craving! From classics like apple, pumpkin, and pecan to specialty flavors like lemon meringue, peanut butter chocolate, or even savory pot pies, there's something for everyone.
Storage instructions usually come with the pie. Fresh pies can often be kept at room temperature for 1-2 days or refrigerated for longer shelf life. Frozen pies should go straight into your freezer if not baked and eaten immediately.
Definitely! Many services let you schedule deliveries for special dates or holidays. Some even offer customization options, like adding a personal note or custom decorations for events like birthdays or anniversaries.
Prices vary depending on the pie, bakery, and shipping method. Expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $60 for the pie, with additional charges ranging from $7 to $50, depending on how quickly your order will arrive. Some sites offer free or discounted shipping on large orders or subscriptions.
Most reputable vendors have a customer service team ready to help. They typically offer refunds, replacements, or discounts if your pie arrives damaged or not as expected. Be sure to document the issue with photos and contact them promptly.
When you're trying to pick a pie company, look for customer reviews, flavor variety, shipping options, and clear policies. Comparing a few services will help you find one that appeals to your taste (and budget). Don't forget to check for seasonal deals or sampler options to try multiple flavors.

Continued from above...

Pies hold a special place in culinary history, dating back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians are credited with the earliest pie-like recipes, typically made with oats, honey, and dates. (Bake like an Egyptian?) The concept evolved as it traveled through Greece and Rome, where meat-filled pies became a staple.

By the time pies reached medieval Europe, they had transformed into a versatile dish with sweet and savory options wrapped in sturdy crusts. Today, pies are a beloved dessert and comfort food in many cultures, with flavors that range from classic to cutting-edge.

Speaking of flavors, traditional favorites like apple, pumpkin, and pecan remain at the top of the list, especially during the holidays. But adventurous bakers have introduced novel creations to delight the foodie in all of us. Imagine a tangy-sweet key lime pie infused with coconut, a decadent chocolate-bourbon pecan pie, or a savory dinnertime pie like tomato-basil ricotta. Pies continue to adapt to modern tastes, making them a perennial crowd-pleaser.

Ready to order pies online? We are too! As you browse all of your options, here are some key factors to consider when choosing a website:

  • Flavor selection. Look for a site that offers the flavors you love, plus unique options you might want to try. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
  • Customization options. Some sites allow you to personalize your pie, whether it's adding a gift message to your order or choosing a specific crust or filling. This will be especially important if you or your gift recipient need a gluten-free crust or a sugar-free ingredient list.
  • Shipping and delivery. Double-check that the vendor ships to your area. Also, how much should you expect to pay for delivery?
  • Customer reviews. Honest feedback from other pie-loving customers can reveal how reliable a site is for quality, packaging, and service. Does the company have a strong reputation with the Better Business Bureau?
  • Satisfaction guarantee. Just in case something goes wrong, it's helpful to know how the company handles issues like damaged or late deliveries.

Ordering pies online is a deliciously easy way to enjoy this timeless treat, and the pie fans at Top Consumer Reviews have evaluated and ranked some of today's most popular pie purveyors (say THAT ten times fast).
