If your first stop in looking for a ringworm product was your local drugstore, you probably came across Lotrimin AF. Manufactured by Bayer, this cream has been used for a long time to get rid of ringworm using the drug clotrimazole.
This cream is odor-free and, for some people, works to remove ringworm over a period of up to four weeks with consistent, twice-daily use. There are no known side effects, and Lotrimin AF is safe for children over the age of 2.
However, if you've already tried a clotrimazole-based product and not seen much improvement, this ringworm product probably won't work for you either. Unlike most of the other products in our review, Lotrimin AF doesn't combine other ingredients with proven antifungal properties to tackle ringworm from different angles, so to speak. There's no essential oils or other all-natural ingredients designed to soothe the skin, either.
On the other hand, because Lotrimin AF only uses clotrimazole, your chances of having an adverse reaction are lower. And, because Lotrimin AF has a long history of use, you can trust that it's safe for most people. It's also one of the most affordable products in our review, even over the recommended 4-week course of application.
Lotrimin AF is a dependable product for ringworm. But you may want to consider the other products in our review if clotrimazole hasn't helped you in the past.
First, it's important to understand that Ringworm is something of a misnomer: you do not have worms in your skin. Ringworm is actually a fungal infection that usually affects the scalp, nail beds, or other parts of the body - especially those that tend to be warm and damp. When you get ringworm on your feet, it's called athlete's foot. In the groin? You guessed it: jock itch.
Ringworm gets its name from the circle-shaped rash that forms over time, usually starting as an itchy and scaly patch of skin. This highly-contagious skin condition can come from skin-to-skin transmission, touching things (like wet locker room floors or towels) that were used by someone with ringworm, or, sadly, even from your pets!
One of the most difficult aspects of dealing with ringworm is that spores can lie dormant for up to 12 months, reactivating as soon as they come in contact with human skin.
So, how can you be sure to get rid of ringworm once and for all? Your doctor may prescribe medication, but those options are often expensive and come with unpleasant side effects. After you've made sure to thoroughly wash any clothing, towels or bedding that have come in contact with the affected area, you'll want to consider which product to use for the skin itself.
As you decide which product is right for you, here are some factors to consider:
