CARCHEX Review 3.5 Star Rating

3.5 Star Rating
  • "A+" Better Business Bureau rating
  • Full plans as low as $59.95
  • 30-minute average response time
  • 30-day cancellation policy

CARCHEX started in 1999 and provides extended auto warranty coverage, vehicle inspections, and Roadside Assistance (for anyone in the US except Californians). They have been featured by national media outlets like PBS, NBC, Fox News, ABC, and CBS. They were also a 2011 finalist and 2012 award recipient of the BBB Greater Maryland's Torch Awards for Marketplace Excellence. They currently hold an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Reliable, but lacks perks

There are over 45,000 service trucks across the United States and Canada in CARCHEX's network with an average response time of 30 minutes. Customers agree that CARCHEX is a reliable service with great customer service when you need them. The downside with a membership here is that it doesn't come with as many discounts for entertainment, lodging, rental cars, electronics, or other services. We also weren't able to find anything about coverage for motorcycles or RVs.

3 Roadside Assistance plans

CARCHEX has three Roadside Assistance plans and they are laid out clearly. There is a single vehicle, single vehicle premium, and unlimited vehicles plan. All of them include 24/7 emergency towing of 25 miles with no "out of pocket" expense, mechanical first aid, flat tire service, emergency battery service, lockout service, fuel delivery service, trip route mapping service, theft reward up to $500, and a mobile application. The differences between the plans include:

  • Single Vehicle: $59.95/year. Up to 5 uses in a 12 month period.
  • Single Vehicle Premium: $79.95/year. Unlimited uses in a 12 month period.
  • Unlimited Vehicles: $109.95/year. Unlimited vehicles, up to 4 members, up to 5 uses in a 12 month period.

All plans have a 3-day waiting period before they can be used.

30 days to cancel

If you need to cancel your membership with CARCHEX, you can do it within 30 days to qualify for a full refund. If you cancel past the 30 day mark, you will receive a prorated refund. Be aware that you'll be automatically charged for a renewal unless you cancel your membership at the year mark.

Check back

Unfortunately, at the time of this review all three plans were out of stock and CARCHEX was not accepting new customers for Roadside Assistance. Because of this, they don't have as much information for customers as they normally would. The reason they've still earned a high rating from us is because CARCHEX is a professional, affordable, reliable company with good customer reviews and if they have spots open up to sign up for a Roadside Assistance plan, it's a good idea. Check back periodically to see if you're able to sign up if you are interested in CARCHEX.

It's important to plan ahead and evaluate which of the many Roadside Assistance plans fit your circumstances so that you don't have to worry about unforeseen car troubles that will inevitably happen. Plans might include towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery, theft protection, lockouts, tire changes, and more.

Roadside Assistance Company FAQ

The most commonly-used benefits of roadside assistance plans are 24-hour towing, flat tire repair, jump starting, lockout service, and emergency fuel delivery. Your plan may also include trip interruption assistance, emergency medical referrals if you need treatment while traveling, travel planning help and discounts on related services.
Not at all. Most plans range from $60 - $200 per year, depending on the level of coverage you select and the number of household members included on the contract.
This varies widely from provider to provider - and even from one plan to another from the same company. It's important that you read the terms and conditions very carefully, so that you're not left with a nasty surprise of extra charges or no coverage when you need it most. One common limitation is on towing: many plans have a mileage limit on a covered tow, and customers are responsible for paying any fees beyond that distance. You may also get a certain number of service calls per year, with little to no coverage once you've reached that limit.
Yes, sometimes: and if you already have coverage, you might not need to pay for a roadside assistance plan. But, you'll want to read your policy very carefully so that you'll know what's covered - and what isn't. For example, your roadside assistance with a new car might expire once you hit two years or 25,000 miles.
Most plans cover you throughout the US, as well as Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and the USVI. But, if you're planning on trips outside of the United States, be sure your roadside assistance plan extends to your destination, and know how to contact your provider for help.
Yes! Some roadside assistance plans specialize in helping people with non-traditional vehicles like motorcycles and RVs (and even bicycles!).
Sometimes. Because most plans are charged monthly, most providers let you cancel with no penalty. You might not get your money back for any previous months of service, especially if you received any benefits during that time.
You'll need to consider which companies offer the coverage you want, compare prices, and check out customer reviews: the "best deal" might not be so great if the service falls short and you're waiting hours for help. It's a good idea to look up the provider's reputation with the Better Business Bureau as well.

Continued from above...

You can customize your plans with additional add-ons like trip interruption coverage or even financial assistance with legal defense help if you get a speeding ticket. The cost for Roadside Assistance will depend on the plan you choose. Most plans allow for you to use your coverage regardless of who owns the car you're driving and you can easily get protection for the whole family.

When shopping for a Roadside Assistance provider, here are a few important things to consider:

  • Coverage details. There are major differences between most Roadside Assistance plans. Carefully read the details and cost of each option to decide which one will be most comprehensive and save you the most time and trouble!
  • Length of coverage. Do you want your plan to cover more than one vehicle? Do you want Roadside Assistance to be available well beyond your car's warranty expiration? Pay close attention to how long your Roadside Assistance is good for.
  • Provider's reputation. What do customers have to say about their experience with the provider so far? How long have they been in business? How prompt are they at getting to you once you make a call for assistance? Do they have a satisfaction guarantee?
