The Best Rug Stores

Where Can You Buy the Best Rugs?

In an age where so much of our shopping is online, you might think it would be the most convenient to buy them online. You'd be right! There's absolutely no need to drive all over town looking for the perfect floor covering for your home office, bedroom, or any other space, because all of the tools are literally in your hands.

How do online rug stores help you get the right rug for your decor? Naturally, you'll need to start by taking accurate measurements of the area you're considering. Once you've got that taken care of, the fun starts. Most online rug stores let you shop specifically by the size and then filter by any other criteria you have: color, pattern, natural vs. synthetic, and so on.

Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award Rug Studio Review 5 Star Rating

Rug Studio

5 Star Rating
  • Over 50,000 rugs to choose from
  • "A+" rated by the BBB
  • Free shipping in the lower 48 United States
  • 30-day return policy, customer pays return postage/freight
Top Consumer Reviews Best-In-Class Blue Ribbon Award

As a division of Oriental Rug Gallery, Rug Studio draws on over 90 years of experience as a family-owned business. Located in San Antonio, Texas, this rug store has tens of thousands of floor coverings in stock, most of which ship out within 24 hours of placing an order.

So many sizes to choose from

Looking at the available rug sizes here is the best way to get an overview of just how big the selection is. Rectangles start at 2'x3' and go up to 12'x15', then "oversized" . Oval, octagon, round, and square rugs go from "small" (less than 5') up to 9' and larger. Hall and stair runners come in standard, wide, and custom, or shop by lengths from 6' to 18'+. Half-moon rugs come in sizes from 1' to 4'. There's a rug here for just about any size and shape in Rug Studio's inventory of over 50,000 products. Besides shape, you can also start your shopping by color, style, weave, brand, sale items, or by which store you can see it on display (Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio).

Luxury rugs available here

How does Rug Studio measure up to the competition with respect to the most expensive rug they sell? At the time of this review, that was the Feizy Luxury Rust-Ivory Area Rug. Unlike most of the retailers in our evaluation, this rug design was available in multiple sizes - though the options were more limited because this pattern had been discontinued. Still, at $41`,337 for an 11.5'x17.5' hand-knotted rug from India, this came in right about average: not the most extravagant and not the least, either.

Wallet-friendly floor coverings too

And the other end of the price spectrum? We found several different patterns of 2'x3' rugs for under $30. You'll find all of Rug Studio's best deals in the Clearance section; during our most recent visit, there were more than 15,000 options at discounts of up to 70%.

Pantone codes? Absolutely!

One way this store makes it really easy to color-match is by providing the Pantone color codes in addition to the basic description. For instance, the Surya Herati area rug is described as having aqua, butter, dark green, bright blue, eggplant, and many other colors - and if you want to be absolutely certain of exactly what they mean by that, the Pantone codes are listed right next to it. It's no wonder that interior designers love using Rug Studio for their projects.

Best Rug Stores

Help is on hand

We like how quick it is to get expert help when shopping for a rug here. Reach out to their online chat, send them an email, or use their toll-free number (9A-5P CST, Monday through Friday) to ask any questions you have or to get recommendations for the perfect rug. As Rug Studio puts it, "We didn't get to be over 90 years old by ignoring our customers!"

Standard return policy

The shipping and return policies at Rug Studio are fairly standard. Orders within the contiguous United States ship for free, and returns can be made within 30 days of shipment. However, you're responsible for the return postage or freight shipping, which can be costly on large area rugs.

Exceptional reputation

Like many of the rug stores we reviewed, Rug Studio earns an "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau, Better yet, there were no complaints filed with the BBB: pretty impressive for a company that's been in business for the better part of a century. Most shoppers report an excellent experience getting rugs here, especially with respect to customer service. Many reviews are from repeat clients who have used Rug Studio for multiple purchases over the years; we love that kind of longevity in this industry.

Best overall choice for rugs

This retailer's emphasis on customer service, combined with unparalleled expertise and a vast selection of floor coverings in so many sizes and styles, make it the best choice for your next rug purchase. Rug Studio earns our first-place ranking among rug stores.

Wayfair Review 4.5 Star Rating

Wayfair

4.5 Star Rating
  • Over 500,000 options
  • "A+" rated and accredited by the BBB
  • Free shipping on orders over $35
  • 30-day return policy, customer pays for return postage/freight

Wayfair strives "to create that feeling of home for everyone, anywhere." It's one of the world's largest home retailers, with 22 million products, 29 million active customers (and growing), 16,000+ employees... you get the idea.

Almost too much to choose from

Let's get real: unless you use the tools on the Wayfair site to drastically narrow down the options, you're going to get overwhelmed very quickly. Don't believe us? Okay, just try and browse the 350,000+ choices in Area Rugs alone. Looking for a hallway runner instead? Yeah, you've got 100,000+ there too. Choose your category, and then make ample use of the filters to zero in on the size, color, price, customer rating, or any of the other 12+ criteria you may already have thought about.

A million dollars for a rug?!

Wayfair shows up regularly in our evaluations: from dog houses to light fixtures, what can't be found here? Every time, we look to get a laugh from the most expensive thing this store offers in that category, and when it comes to rugs Wayfair didn't disappoint. Their rival rug stores usually max out around $10,000, with a few getting closer to $100,000. Costly, right? They can't hold a candle to Wayfair in the Spendiest Rug competition: how about $960,999.99?! (Only one left in stock! Buy soon! Pay just $40,042/month for 24 months with a Wayfair credit card!) Search for the Bokara Rug Co. if you're hoping that one is still available (or to see other jaw-droppingly expensive examples).

Many choices for every budget

No matter what your budget is, you'll have no shortage of options for rugs at Wayfair. Area, Hallway, Outdoor, One-of-a-Kind, Kitchen, Bath, Youth and even Doormats all come in an almost indescribable array of shapes, sizes, colors and more - and Wayfair makes it pretty intuitive to shop. Plus, on all orders over $35, shipping is free and returns can be made within 30 days of delivery (but you pay for the return postage).

Best Rug Stores

Use customer reviews to guide your purchase

Because Wayfair has so many customers, you'll find more shopper reviews on individual products here than any other store we evaluated. For example, the Brandt Floral Gray Area Rug by Mistana had a staggering 69,440 ratings at the time of this review (with an average of 4.6 out of 5 stars). While Wayfair doesn't give you access to a "see this in your room" tool, you'll usually have lots of customer photos that provide a better-than-most idea of how it looks (and lasts) in real life.

Huge retailer = many complaints

Wayfair is an absolutely massive online store, and as such the company receives its fair share of complaints - over 1,300 in the last 12 months alone. That doesn't get in the way of this rug store receiving an "A+" and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. With respect to rugs, your best bet is to consider the customer ratings on each individual design you're thinking of buying: that'll give you a good window of insight into how well it matches the description, how it holds up under normal use, and so on.

Not a specialist, but still a great choice

The only reason Wayfair didn't earn our first-place ranking is because they don't specialize in rugs: if you need guidance from an expert, you're not going to get it here. True, you can get a lot of help by considering customer reviews before you make a purchase, but that's not quite the same thing as being able to work one-on-one with someone whose area of expertise is floor coverings. Other than that, Wayfair is our absolute favorite one-stop shop for rugs and then some: if you can't find it here, you probably won't find it anywhere.

E Carpet Gallery Review 4 Star Rating

E Carpet Gallery

4 Star Rating
  • Around 10,000 rugs to choose from
  • Almost 2,000 5-star reviews from shoppers
  • Free shipping in the continental United States
  • 30-day return policy; customer pays postage over $100 on any rug 12'x15' or larger

E Carpet Gallery was founded in Montreal, Canada more than 20 years ago and specializes in "affordable luxury rugs" . Their selection consists of one-of-a-kind, handmade rugs.

Plenty of variety

You'll find about 10,000 rugs on offer here. Unless you already have a particular style in mind, you may want to avoid shopping using that dropdown - because there are just so many. Solid, Moroccan, Geometric, Traditional, Tribal, Contemporary, Transitional, Vintage, and Kilims are just some of the style choices to consider, all with subcategories too. A better bet might be to shop by size or color, since you've probably already measured the space and have some decor you're looking to match (or at least not clash).

Reasonable prices

The selection and pricing at E Carpet Gallery falls right in the middle when compared with other stores. The most expensive rug at the time of this review was the Pakistani Pako Persian 14'2" x19'9" Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, priced at $5,450 (compared with a supposed retail price of $15,600 if you were to buy it from a local store). Shopping for the least-expensive items sold by this rug store, we found plenty of 2'x3' rugs in numerous patterns, at a starting price of $67.50. That's higher than many of this retailer's rivals, but not prohibitively so. And, you can always shop the Sale page if you're looking for a bargain.

Lots of images, no upload tool

There were ample zoomable images to get a closer look, and one of them included a Pantone swatch card with colors for comparison. However, there's no image upload tool to see what it would look like in the room of your choice.

Best Rug Stores

Financing and protection coverage available

We appreciate that E Carpet Gallery includes both financing and product protection options. For example, on an Afghan Chobi Finest Hand-knotted Wool Rug priced at $4,575, a one-year plan cost $262.99 and a five-year plan was $562.99. Powered by Mulberry, this protection covers stains of virtually all kinds (food, drink, human/pet bodily fluids, ew) and border tears up to 6" long. You can read the full terms and conditions by clicking the link in the description for the protection plan. As for financing, it's made available through Affirm and you can apply right from the E Carpet Gallery site.

Return policy more generous than some

E Carpet Gallery strikes something of a middle ground when it comes to returns. Like most rug stores, they give you 30 days to send back your purchase. If you want the company to pick up the tab on the return postage, you have to request your return within 7 days of your rug being delivered, though. Also, if your rug is 12x15' or larger, E Carpet Gallery splits the difference, so to speak: you're responsible for the return shipment, but they'll give you a $100 voucher towards the expense (and you wind up paying the difference).

Good reputation despite BBB rating

E Carpet Gallery has a "B+" from the Better Business Bureau, but the only reason given by the BBB is the rug store's length of time in operation; we didn't see any complaints (or even reviews) listed there. In contrast, we found nearly 2,000 five-star ratings from shoppers (the majority from Canada, but still plenty from the US too). Customers say that the rugs here arrive in a timely fashion and, more importantly, exactly as described. E Carpet Gallery reps are available to answer questions and respond quickly and helpfully whenever there's an issue or a return request.

Trustworthy rug store

Good selection, reasonable prices, great customer service and a strong reputation: what more could you ask of a rug store? While you won't find extremes here in any regard - no antique Persian rugs or 100,000 styles to choose from - you'll get just enough of everything you need to come away a happy customer. E Carpet Gallery is a solid win for buying rugs.

Fine Rug Collection Review 4 Star Rating

Fine Rug Collection

4 Star Rating
  • "A+" rated by the BBB
  • Free shipping to all US states (not just lower 48)
  • 30-day return policy, store pays return postage
  • In-house design consultants available by live chat, email, FB Messenger or toll-free number

Fine Rug Collection is different from most of the rug stores in our review: this retailer specializes in Persian and Oriental rugs, so you won't find any synthetic bath mats or polyester floor coverings here. This company has a history spanning more than three decades, offering both antique and new hand-knotted rugs.

New rugs added regularly

The unique nature of this rug store makes it difficult to say exactly how many options they carry at any given time. Their experts regularly source new runners, area rugs and more, adding them to the collection as they go. If you've got something in mind, you may want to reach out to Fine Rug Collection's representatives via online chat, toll-free number, email or even Facebook Messenger: they'll help you find the perfect match for the floor space you're covering and the decor/style you hope to fit.

Use dropdowns to help you shop

But, generally speaking, you can shop by Clearance, Runners, or Persian and Oriental; in that last dropdown, you'll find more links that let you go to a particular pattern, color, or price range. At the time of our most recent visit, we found just over a dozen options in the Under $400 category but many, many more in the other price range brackets.

Nothing over $70,000

Surprisingly, however, Fine Rug Collection's most expensive rug (when we last shopped on the site) was not the costliest among the stores we reviewed. The 9'2" x12' Very Fine Persian Silk Tabriz Large Area Rug had a price of just under $63,000. It was in new condition, unlike some rugs here that are designated as antiques, and there were both images and an HD video to consider in order to fully appreciate the quality and colors.

Best Rug Stores

Can buy rugs made by the same artisan

A unique aspect of shopping at Fine Rug Collection is the possibility of buying pieces from the same artisan. For example, the next-highest priced rug we found was a Tabriz Antique, made in Persia around 1921. The description said that while it was a one-piece set, there was a "sibling" : different design, same craftsperson.

Reputation for excellence

Fine Rug Collection might not be the biggest name in online rug stores, but their reputation is surprisingly good. They have an "A" rating from the Better Business Bureau, and it's a good sign that there was only one complaint filed there over the last three years. Better yet, their customer reviews elsewhere show that 95% of shoppers give this retailer a rating of "great" or "excellent" ; most impressive were the comments from professionals like interior designers who said that these rugs are very high-quality and the customer service received is top-notch.

Free shipping and 30-day returns

They also make it as risk-free as possible to buy high-end Oriental and Persian rugs online. It might feel a little scary to make such a big commitment sight-unseen, but you get both free shipping anywhere in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) and free return postage if you decide to send it back within 30 days of receipt. Fine Rug Collection does limit you to one free rug return every 30 days, unless you're making an exchange or accepting store credit instead of a refund.

Best choice for fine Persian and Oriental rugs

While not everyone shopping for rugs is looking for a top-quality Persian or Oriental floor covering, Fine Rug Collection is our first choice for those who are. The company has a long history in the industry, an excellent reputation, and goes the extra mile to get the perfect rugs for their customers' needs. This rug store is well worth your attention.

Rug Source Review 3.5 Star Rating

Rug Source

3.5 Star Rating
  • Over 25,000 rugs
  • "A+" rated and accredited by the BBB
  • 30-day return policy, no charge for return postage
  • Free shipping on all orders (lower 48 states)

Rug Source is based in Charlotte, North Carolina and is one of the few rug stores in our review with both an online presence and a brick-and-mortar showroom. This retailer has a little something of everything, from antique "palace-sized" rugs from the 1800s to machine-made rugs that won't make you panic when you spill your coffee.

Lots of useful filters

To shop for rugs here, it's easiest if you have something to get you started: either a color you're trying to match, a particular size, or a rug category (Persian, Turkish, Oriental, Antique, even Clearance). Once you've chosen that, it's easy to use filters to sort through your choices. We thought it was fun to be able to see the age ranges (yes, some of the rugs here are new), countries of origin (like Russia, Morocco, Nepal and Afghanistan), and pile (such as Kork Wool, Manchester Wool, Silk or even polyester).

Not the most professional website

Rug Source isn't quite as polished as some of the rug stores we evaluated. For example, when we looked at the most costly floor covering sold here - a Pre-1900 Antique Vegetable Dye Khotan Large Oriental Rug (25'x37'), priced at $133,200 - the item description said it was made in Mongolia but the label in the photos had the origin listed as Egypt. We also spotted several typos and errors scattered throughout the site, which detracted from the confidence we might place in this retailer.

Helpful photo tool, but no reviews on individual products

Another feature lacking here is product reviews. No matter which rug catches your eye, you won't have any shopper input to help you with your purchase. Rug Source's rivals almost always let you see ratings from customers, even photos of how those floor coverings looked once put in place. While we like that this store gives you a tool to see how a particular rug looks in your room, based on a photo you take and upload, it's also useful to get real-world feedback.

Best Rug Stores

Solid reputation

With only one complaint in the last three years, Rug Source earns accreditation and an "A+" from the Better Business Bureau. They don't have as many customer reviews as some of the rug stores in our review, but the few dozen we found were very positive (over 90% giving the retailer a 4- or 5-star rating). A handful of customers didn't think the rug quality matched the description, but the vast majority say that these rugs are even better than the photos depict.

Generous return policy

Plus, you're protected by a 30-day return policy. If your rug doesn't meet your expectations, you can request a return label within 30 days of delivery and Rug Source will pay for the postage.

Worth a look

There's no reason to avoid buying rugs from Rug Source. The company has a good-enough reputation, a reasonable selection (especially in the one-of-a-kind/vintage category), and a strong return policy. Will you find absolutely every type of rug here? No, but if you spot one that fits the floor space you have at a price you like, we encourage you to give Rug Source a try.

eSaleRugs Review 3.5 Star Rating

eSaleRugs

3.5 Star Rating
  • 8,000+ rugs in stock
  • In business for almost 50 years
  • Rewards program with 5% store credit on every purchase
  • 30-day returns, retailer pays the return postage

eSaleRugs is a family business that has nearly 50 years of experience in selling floor coverings. Based in Fort Mill, South Carolina, this rug store ships all orders within 24-48 hours from your purchase date.

Good selection of high-end rugs

The selection here really runs the gamut. On the high end, we found a half-dozen rugs priced between $50,000 and $94,000. The 20' x 12'10" Isfahan Rug was the most expensive floor covering offered by eSaleRugs, with a retail value of over $400,000 and a final price of "just" $93,950. You might have already guessed that this is a semi-antique rug, in Extra Fine condition, 800 KPSI and hand-knotted. There were plenty of images available too. Can't quite fork over that much cash in one go? eSaleRugs partners with Shop Pay, which allows you to make four interest-free installments... but that's only for orders between $50 and $3,000, sorry.

Numerous budget-friendly choices too

Among the 8,000+ rugs sold here, you'll find plenty of options across the rest of the price spectrum too. Just need a basic shag rug? Those start at $9. A little 2'x3' rug to put under a small table? The price is right at $16. The easiest way to get to the rugs that fit what you've got pictured is by using the dropdowns at the top of the site: shop by color or size, style, room/outdoor, and so on.

Great variety of tools to help you shop

eSaleRugs doesn't skimp on the product information. From plenty of photos taken from multiple angles to a great "see rug on your floor" tool, you should have no unanswered questions about the size, origin and colors in the rugs you like. And, because eSaleRugs has had so many customers over the years, you'll almost always find reviews. For example, one of their most popular designs is the Kashan: there were over 1,200 reviews and a 4.8-star average rating, including shopper-uploaded photos of how the different sizes and available colors looked in their homes.

Rewards program

If you expect to buy rugs on the regular, you should join eSaleRugs' complimentary rewards program. You'll get 5% in store credit on every purchase, a 20% discount every time you refer friends and family who wind up making a purchase, and a $5 reward just for signing up.

Best Rug Stores

Customer-friendly returns

Another perk of shopping at eSaleRugs is their no-hassle return policy. You've got the industry-standard 30 days from the date you receive your order to send it back, and you can start the return process right on the website. There are no restocking fees, and eSaleRugs will even cover the cost of the return postage.

Lower grade from the BBB

We weren't happy to see that eSaleRugs' rating with the Better Business Bureau had taken a pretty significant drop since our last review, going from a flawless "A+" to a not-so-impressive "B" . But, the BBB says it's because of 200 complaints filed against the retailer - only 18 in the year leading up to this evaluation. That's really not very many (we've seen eSaleRugs' rivals with far more than that), and each complaint we saw on the BBB site had a courteous, appropriate response from eSaleRugs' representatives. In short, don't put too much stock in this grade change at the BBB.

Customer feedback on the decline too

However, recent customer feedback isn't as positive as we'd like to see either. In one place we looked, though 70% of eSaleRugs' shoppers gave the store a 5-star rating, over 20% rated it as "bad" with just one star. Some people described receiving rugs that looked used, while others got poor-quality floor coverings that started to unravel after just a month of use. That's definitely not what we expected from what used to be our first-place retailer of rugs.

Still good enough but not in first place anymore

eSaleRugs still comes in at a solid 3.5-star rating. There's a lot to choose from, and we like some of the customer-friendly perks here that many of their rivals fail to offer. We hope to see their reputation with the BBB (and in customer ratings elsewhere) bounce back in the future, bringing this rug store back to the higher ranking it enjoyed in the past.

RugKnots Review 3 Star Rating

RugKnots

3 Star Rating
  • Over 5,000 rugs to choose from
  • "A+" rated by the BBB
  • Free shipping on all orders in the lower 48 states
  • 30-day return policy (from order date, not delivery)

RugKnots is a woman-owned rug store based in Maryland, in operation since 1980. There are over 5,000 rugs offered by this online-only retailer, ranging from Oriental and Persian to Contemporary and Southwestern styles.

Not the best for online shopping

We were a little baffled by some aspects of the online shopping experience with RugKnots. For instance, when researching the most expensive floor covering in stock (the Ivory Ziegler Area Rug, priced just over $37,000), we loved that there were so many product images. But, the one that had it pictured in an average-sized living room belied the fact that it measured eighty FEET long (and just over nine feet wide)! We chuckled when we looked in the Features section and saw that this rug was recommended for a dining room, bedroom, sunroom, kitchen or office space/home study - can you imagine? There's also no way to upload a photo and see how it'll look in a customer's actual space - so you'd better pay very close attention to the details to avoid a surprise (even though that might be amusing in some cases).

Not really "Custom"

We got excited when we saw "Custom Rugs" in the Area Rugs menu, thinking that this retailer would have something that set them apart from other rug stores. But again, looking at the details, it seemed that this category consists of already-made rugs in odd dimensions, and not an option for shoppers to get something cut to fit.

Limited product reviews

Some of the rugs sold here have customer reviews, but the most we saw for any rug was just under 20 ratings; more often than not, you won't find any shopper feedback, even when using the dropdown options to just show you RugKnots' "Best Selling Rugs" .

Best Rug Stores

Delivery timeframes are inconsistent

Delivery can also be haphazard. RugKnots says that it depends on the rug and its location: yours could come in two days, three weeks... or even six months! We're not sure how they let customers know that information prior to placing their order; when we added that Ivory Ziegler rug to our cart, all we got was a checkout showing it would be shipped (for free, like all other rugs here) via FedEx.

Iffy on returns

The return policy here isn't anything to be impressed by, either. You've got 30 days from the date you placed your order - which isn't terrific if you happen to choose one of those three-week-delivery floor coverings. You'll also be responsible for paying the return postage.

Check out the video testimonials

On a more positive note, RugKnots has an "A+" from the Better Business Bureau, and there was only one complaint filed there in the last three years. They don't have a ton of customer reviews online, but you can see plenty of video testimonials on RugKnots' Instagram. It's a fun way to see some of the ways that people are putting these floor coverings to use in real life.

Good, not great yet

RugKnots comes in at a just-average three stars. It doesn't provide the same high-caliber shopping experience as our higher-ranked rug stores, but we didn't find all of the problems reported by shoppers with our lower-rated retailers either. RugKnots has potential, but it's going to take some changes for this shop to compete with its more customer-friendly rivals.

Burke Decor Review 3 Star Rating

Burke Decor

3 Star Rating
  • Over 11,000 rugs to choose from
  • Free shipping in the lower 48 states on orders over $50
  • "A" rated and accredited by the BBB
  • 30-day return policy; customer pays return postage and 5% restocking fee

Burke Decor was created back in 2007 in response to a designer having a hard time sourcing decor, materials, lighting fixtures and other items after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. There are also several brand offshoots you may find as you shop for rugs, so don't be surprised if you're shopping elsewhere and you wind up back at Burke Decor. This particular online brand carries everything from wallpaper to pillows, and when it comes to rugs you'll find 11,000+ options.

Start with the filters

You could start your shopping by browsing the main Rugs page, but it may be easier to use the filters on the left side of the page. You may already have an idea of your price range, desired colors or size, maybe even a favorite brand or designer; using those to refine your results will help you not have to browse quite so many options.

Not enough photos on some rugs

What's the most expensive rug you can buy from Burke Decor? It's appropriately called the "One of a Kind Woll Etched Grey Rug" , and it's yours for the sale price of $18,194.25. (You'll even get a $75 gift card with the purchase! Don't spend it all in one place.) If you need financing for such a large purchase, Burke Decor partners with Affirm, and you can prequalify right on the BD website. We were surprised to only find two images of this one-of-a-kind rug, neither of which showed what it would look like in a room; this retailer doesn't offer the nice "see it in a room" tool you'll find with many of their rivals. Also, be sure to look for the "Read More" link in the Product Overview if you want important details about the materials, construction, weight or dimensions of any rug you're considering.

Popular rugs - but no customer reviews?

Burke Decor says that their best-selling rug is the Allegro Grey & Beige, rectangular in shape and made out of 100% polyester, with a starting price of $220 (or $187 at the sale price in effect during our most recent visit to the site). You'll have to take BD's word for its popularity, though: there wasn't a single customer review on the product page. At least with this particular rug, there were a few more product images, including two that showed it in use in a couple of different rooms.

Best Rug Stores

Stingy return policy

You're not going to be blown away by Burke Decor's return policy. You've got 30 days from the date your rug is delivered - fairly average - but not only will you have to pay for the return postage, but you'll also be charged a 5% restocking fee, deducted from your refund. That's fine if you're just buying a small mat, but the cost to send back a rug that weighs 60+ pounds is going to be prohibitive.

Somewhat disappointing shopper feedback

Burke Decor has an "A" rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. We were glad to see that complaints received a friendly, professional response from the company's reps; we'd like to see a quicker turnaround though, because it often took several days to a couple of weeks for customers to get that reply. That lines up with shopper feedback we found elsewhere: "friendly reps, slow response" .

Many 1-star customer reviews

We also found quite a few people who had issues with Burke Decor items in general, getting things that weren't as described, or finding out that something they ordered was actually out of stock and having to wait several weeks for a refund. That's probably why only 50% of their customers give them a five-star rating, while over 30% left a dismal one-star review. Granted, those comments span all of the products sold by BD, not just rugs, but it's worth keeping in mind.

Check out the competition first

Overall, Burke Decor is good-not-great for most of what they sell, including rugs. Could you find something you love here? Probably. Will you get the world's best customer service? Not as likely. Keep this rug store as an option, but only after you've seen what our higher-ranked retailers have to offer.

  • One tree planted for every Rugs purchase

For almost four decades, Rugs has been a part of the floor covering industry. Based in Fort Mill, South Carolina, this rug store has something for just about everyone - with over four million in-stock rugs for every room in your home or office.

Intuitive website for shopping

Shopping the Rugs site couldn't be any easier. While you can use the links at the top of the site if you already have an idea of the type of rug you want (like Modern, Natural, or Persian & Oriental) or the room you're covering, our favorite way to start is by clicking on "All Rugs" and then "Shop All" first. You can then use all of the filters you like to help you drill down to the rugs that match what you really want: size, shape, color, price, style, patterns, material, you name it.

A few rugs over $30,000

It's always interesting to see the most and least expensive rugs a retailer carries, and Rugs doesn't disappoint. At the time of this evaluation, their most expensive rug was a 12'4" x 24'4" Tabriz Hadji Jalili Oriental Rug. Get excited, because it was discounted by 76% and priced at just $48,099. This rug is hand-knotted with 400 KPSI, and is brand-new in extra-fine condition. All of Rugs' hand-knotted floor coverings are professionally washed and treated, then individually inspected before shipment. There were a total of 14 rugs in the $30,000+ category.

Many inexpensive rugs, free shipping on all orders

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you'll find lots of options in the $20-and-under range, from bath mats to shag rugs, mostly in the 2'x3' size. As you'd expect, these budget-friendly rugs are more likely to have customer reviews you can consider to help narrow down the choices. Whether you're buying an heirloom Persian rug or replacing a worn-out bath mat, your order will always ship for free here.

Best Rug Stores

See how it looks

The best tool on the Rugs site is their "See this in my room" button. You can check out how the rug you select would look in a generic space, like "Modern Living Room" or "Trendy Office Space" , but why bother with something vague when you can upload a photo of the room where you're picturing it? That takes out a ton of the guesswork.

Great return policy and 24/7 customer service

Rugs has a really good return policy: not only can you send your order back within 30 days of receiving it, but the company will also eat the cost of the return postage. Another plus is that this rug store offers round-the-clock customer service, so if you've got a question about a product or want help with an order while browsing in the middle of the night, you shouldn't have a problem getting a hold of a rep who can help.

Reputation is disappointing

Unfortunately, Rugs' reputation is not consistent. On the one hand, over 12,000 customers think that this store earned a 5-star rating. There are plenty of glowing comments that describe fast shipping and rugs that fit the description completely. On the other hand, we're very concerned with the fact that this retailer has an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau. It's not unusual for a big company to have 200+ complaints; what stood out to us is the fact that 31 of those complaints went unanswered by Rugs' representatives. Everyone makes mistakes, but the best retailers actually take the time to address and fix them. Rugs doesn't perform so well in that regard, apparently.

Has room for improvement

We really wanted to give Rugs a much higher rating: their online store is so easy to use, and there are so many in-stock options. But, it's not enough for a rug retailer to make big promises: they need to deliver on them consistently, and having a significant number of no-response complaints is not acceptable. For that reason, Rugs winds up towards the bottom of our rankings.

Rugs USA Review 2.5 Star Rating

Rugs USA

2.5 Star Rating
  • Over 5,500 rugs in stock
  • Free shipping on all orders
  • 30-day return policy, shipping costs deducted from customer refund

Rugs USA has been in business for over two decades, selling more than eight million rugs to 1,000,000+ customers.

More information, please

Rugs USA isn't one of those stores that carries hand-knotted, heirloom-quality Oriental and Persian rugs: out of the more than 5,500 items they sell, the most expensive one ($2,242) we found had the very uninformative name of "Ivory Blue TW127 Area Rug" . Okay, then. The description was equally bare; we could see the dimensions, pile height, brand, material, weave, construction and origin, but that was about it. Rugs USA only displayed one image of the rug too, making it hard to see from multiple angles. At least they have a tool to view each rug in your room.

Some popular rug choices

The most popular item we spotted at Rugs USA was the Moroccan Trellis Rug. That one came with a lot more detail and photos, plus a wide range of shapes, sizes, and color combinations. A 2'x3' rectangle rug was on sale for just $30.50, going all the way up to a 12'x18' for $571.80. Over 7500 people bought this rug in its many designs, and it was even named as "the" rug to buy by the New York Times.

Free shipping, some discounts

Want to save a little on your purchase? Watch for a spin-to-win pop-up when you first visit the Rugs USA site. You could get a discount ranging from 5-10%; just enter your email if you get one you'd like to use. Also, shipping is free on everything here.

Best Rug Stores

No generous return policy here

We weren't impressed by Rugs USA's return policy. The 30-day window is pretty standard, but charging for the shipping fees back to their warehouse isn't very generous. Plus, you won't know how much those costs will be until you initiate the return. If you decide to go through with it, your refund will be less whatever they calculated as the postage cost.

Reputation is a mixed bag

Rugs USA has a disappointing reputation with the Better Business Bureau, where the company has earned a "D" rating due to having nearly four dozen complaints filed there in the past year, a fourth of which either never got a response from the company or were never resolved. On the flipside, we found the company to be more responsive to shopper feedback elsewhere. Over 3,000 customers left a five-star rating for Rugs USA, citing the rug store's ample selection, fast delivery, and accurate descriptions of their floor coverings. There were a handful of negative reviews, but Rugs USA reps responded to over 90% of them. Still, a "D" at the BBB is hard to overlook.

Better options are out there

While you might be impressed by the sheer volume of rugs sold by this retailer, we advise caution if you're looking to make a big purchase. On a smaller floor covering, it's not as big of a deal if you have a problem and can't get a satisfactory response from the company - but if you need to make a return or have some other issue with a $1,000+ rug, there's a better-than-average chance you're going to be disappointed with Rugs USA.

Super Area Rugs Review 2 Star Rating

Super Area Rugs

2 Star Rating
  • Over 7,600 area rugs to choose from
  • Free shipping on all orders
  • 30-day return policy, customer pays return postage

As you'd guess from the name, Super Area Rugs specializes in... area rugs! There are more than 7600 rugs offered by this online retailer, with plenty of choices for shapes, materials, and prices.

Use filters for easier shopping

There are a couple ways to go about finding the rugs that match what you need. At the top of the page, click the dropdowns if you already have a preference for the size, style, color, or room. Otherwise, you can click on "All Rugs" and then refine your results by color, price, material, size, style, or customer rating.

Needs more information

Super Area Rugs have a few options in the $5,000 and up range, the most expensive being the Derya Hand Knotted Area Rug, with dimensions of 12' x 8'10" . For a rug priced at $18,500, it's strange that it only has one image to consider. The description tells you that it's made of silk and crafted in India, but there's no listing of the colors and no tool for seeing how it would look in your home. We're not sure many people would commit to such an expensive rug based on that alone.

Better details on less expensive rugs

Looking at the opposite side of the price spectrum, we found options under $20 - including several outdoor rugs that were more like doormats than area rugs. One popular choice was the Soft Faux Sheepskin Fur Fluffy Area Rug in White, starting at $19.99 for a 2'x3' rectangle and going up to $200 for the much larger 8'x10' size. Super Area Rugs had lots of photos to see how it looked in different rooms, but no tools to upload photos to see how it would be in your own room.

Best Rug Stores

Some decent customer policies

This rug store uses Shop Pay to allow customers to make four interest-free installment payments on purchases between $50 and $3,000. You'll also get free shipping - and some rugs are specially-designated as eligible for free one-day delivery. You'll have 30 days from the date your rug arrives to make a return request; there are no restocking fees, but you're responsible for the return postage.

Not nearly enough customer feedback

There's just not a lot of feedback to go on when trying to figure out if Super Area Rugs is a reliable store. We didn't find any listing with the Better Business Bureau, and despite proudly proclaiming that they've earned over 5,000 five-star reviews we couldn't even find 100. Or 10. (Their Facebook account had quite a few recent posts, but zero shopper comments and only one review.) Some of the rugs on their website have a couple hundred shopper ratings, others have none.

Last place until more info is offered

Where is this company located? What's their story? Who knows? Super Area Rugs could be the most awesome place ever to shop for rugs - but until they get a lot more transparent, we have no choice but to put them at the bottom of our rankings.

Continued from above...

Some of the best rug stores really go the extra mile to help you make your purchase. How about a tool that lets you upload a photo of the room you've got in mind and see exactly what any given rug will look like in that space? Amazing, right? Pantone color codes for comparison, rug specialists available via live chat or toll-free number, and customer reviews complete with photos of how the rugs look in real life are just a few of the ways you'll be guided towards some fantastic options.

A few online rug stores focus solely on Persian and Oriental rugs, many of which are several decades old. Can you imagine the history behind a floor covering like that? Often sourced from estates (or even palaces), these rugs have a look and feel that is completely different from synthetic, mass-produced floor coverings - and sometimes with a correspondingly-high price tag!

Believe it or not, these one-of-a-kind rugs and their machine-crafted counterparts almost always have a 30-day return policy in case you change your mind or it just doesn't look quite right when you get it in place. Just watch out for the store's policy on return postage: some will cover it for you, but others make it your responsibility (which, as you'd expect, can be quite spendy for a larger rug).

Some retailers have thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of rugs to choose from. Overwhelmed yet? Before jumping in and trying to pick a good online rug store, you should keep these criteria in mind for a smoother shopping experience:

  • Selection. Make sure the store has the kind of rug you want. There's no need to spend time poring over the inventory at a Persian rug specialty retailer if you're just looking for an outdoor rug for the patio. The more rugs a store has, the more likely it is that you'll find several options that would work.
  • Shopping Tools. How does the store help you find what you need? Is it intuitive to use for narrowing down the options? Can you see how the rug would look in your home? With good tools, you minimize the chances of getting something you have to send back.
  • Return Policy. Speaking of sending things back, does the rug store let you make a return? What are the terms, and who's responsible for the shipping costs back to the warehouse?
  • Reputation. Have other shoppers had a good experience with the retailer? Some signs to look for are a positive rating ("A" or "A+" ) from the Better Business Bureau, equally high ratings from customers (both on individual products and about the store itself), and happy reviews from clients who have bought rugs there more than once.

TopConsumerReviews.com has evaluated and rated the best online rug stores available today. We're sure this information will help you find the right covering for any floor space, big or small!

Rug Store FAQ

Great question! Start by measuring the area you'd like to cover. Next, determine what patterns or colors you're looking for: are you making a bold statement or trying to quietly complement the rest of your decor? Finally, decide on your budget! From there, you can use the filtering options on most rug websites to narrow down the possibilities and find your perfect match.
Buying your rug online puts the world's best selection at your fingertips. Inventory at local stores can be extremely limited, so use the internet to get exactly what you want - probably at the best price! You can also get plenty of helpful information to guide your decision-making, like the differences between handmade and machine-made rugs or Oriental and Persian rugs, how to clean a rug, and so on.
You might be nervous about buying your next rug online, sight unseen. Don't be! You'll find ample descriptions on most retailers' websites to help you picture exactly what you're getting. But, if your rug is delivered and it's just not what you were expecting, most stores have a return policy of at least 30 days. Just be aware that you may have to pay a restocking fee and/or return shipping costs, depending on the retailer.
How does "$0" sound? The vast majority of online rug stores offer free shipping within the lower 48 United States (and a small number extend that to Alaska and Hawaii as well!).
Whatever you do, don't pull on the thread/fiber! Clip it at the source instead.
The longevity of any rug depends on several factors: how well it's made and what it's made of, how much traffic the area gets (e.g. pets, people, furniture), and where it's placed. The highest-quality rugs can last long enough to become a family heirloom, with the proper care.
It's not strictly necessary, but it's a good idea. Using a rug pad will protect the flooring underneath, add extra cushioning, and also offer better traction so that your rug doesn't slip around on the floor.
Regular upkeep includes vacuuming once a week to remove any dirt and dust, assuming you have the type of rug that can be vacuumed at all! Smaller rugs can be taken outside and shaken. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your rug, which may include a professional cleaning every few years.
