Saturday, January 18th
Amazing Clubs offers quite a few gourmet gift subscriptions and has been recognized by popular media outlets like Good Morning America, Today, The Early Show, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and others. There's something for everyone here and their most popular clubs include deliveries for things like beer, coffee, chocolate, hot sauce, cheese, jerky, popcorn, and even non-food items like flowers, neckties, and teddy bears.
Give as a gift or keep for yourself
Even though Amazing Clubs refers to itself as a "gift club”, this doesn't mean that you can't subscribe to the deliveries of unique foods and products here for yourself. The way their process works is that you can choose from any of their 44 clubs and the company will send a gift announcement if it's for someone other than yourself to let them know everything about their new club, the delivery schedule, and even include a personalized message from you. Deliveries will start during the month you select (always the last week of the month), and then month after month, orders of gourmet items will continue to arrive for the length of time you specify when you order initially. A free online account is available for you or your giftee to see upcoming selections, view tracking information, or pause deliveries if needed.
2 surprise flavors monthly
In previous months, the salsa subscription from Amazing Clubs has included flavors like cilantro salsa, mild salsa with jalapeno, salsa fresca, pineapple mango salsa, Texas wild peach salsa, black bean salsa, medium garlic salsa, chipotle salsa, fire roasted salsa, cranberry orange salsa, and more. Each shipment will include two new varieties of salsa (between 12 and 16 ounces) from specialty, boutique producers from around the world. You won't specify in advance what flavors of salsa you want, but rather everyone signed up for the salsa club will receive the same 2 flavors each month, so it will always be a surprise. You (or your giftee) will be told what those flavors are several weeks before the package ships, so if there's a flavor you'd rather skip, just let Amazing Clubs know. They'll simply tack on that skipped month to the end of your subscription, no problem.
Choose your duration
All orders qualify for free shipping at Amazing Clubs, which is great. It's no fun to pay a shipping fee for every single delivery from a company, so this is a good perk. You can choose from a few different subscription club durations including:
You can cancel your membership with Amazing Clubs at any time and receive a refund for any unshipped merchandise that you've purchased. They go so far as to call it the "They'll Love It! Guarantee”, and in our experience, the customer support at Amazing Clubs has gone above and beyond to keep people happy - offering not just refunds but replacements, credits, and even allowing subscribers to switch to a completely different club.
High customer ratings
The Better Business Bureau gives Amazing Clubs an "A+” rating. The company boasts over 3 million satisfied customers and we found that the vast majority of them had nothing but high praises to sing of the company. People have given different gift clubs from Amazing Clubs for years and have no intention of stopping since they always deliver high quality products and service. Their customer service is prompt and really helpful in resolving issues for people, and overall there really seems to be no major issues for people to complain about.
A favorite option
If you like the idea of getting novel salsa flavors from one month to the next, Amazing Clubs is a phenomenal option. You can just set your schedule and forget it since deliveries will come automatically without you needing to go in and make selections. No matter what club we look into from this company, we're always pleasantly surprised at how well-liked they are and they always have a solid range of flavors and items each month. Amazing Clubs is our favorite salsa club and has earned our highest rating.
Hank, the creator of Hank's Salsa Co. came up with a goal in 1999 to create the best salsa in the world. Easy task, right? For 20 years he experimented with a team with various spices and ingredients to create a salsa that tasted different from anything else before it. It took them 29 ingredients to finally land on the perfect balance of hot and spicy while bursting with flavor. Hank's Salsa Co. aims to expand people's palates and show that even those who don't usually like hot or spicy foods can come to enjoy them.
Get ready for some spice
Hank's salsas don't come in your typical glass jar with a screw top lid. These salsas are contained in something that resembles more of a water bottle. It's a fun, modern alternative to what we're used to and each bottle contains 16 oz. of salsa, which is also a bit more than you usually get with a glass jar. The flavors here are called Defused, Mild (but not really), Humid, Creeper, Blaze, Atomic, and Detonator. Just hearing those names set our mouths on fire.
Pair with flavorful chips
If you want the perfect pairing with one of Hank's salsas, you can grab one of the unique flavors of tortilla chips to go along with it for $7 more. Hank's has their original chips, ghost pepper chips, and jalapeño chips. They even sell a beautiful salsa dish with two places for salsas and wooden spoons for dishing, priced at $32.
Steep shipping
An individual bottle of salsa is $11.25 plus the cost of shipping. Your delivery fee will be based on where you are located and includes the cost of cold packaging used for your order, since these salsas are meant to be refrigerated for optimal freshness, even before opening. For us, shipping was $15.37, which did feel a little steep, especially when you consider that the cost of shipping is more than one bottle of salsa alone.
Reasonable subscription pricing
You'll get the most bang for your buck with the salsa subscription from Hank's Salsa Co. You can choose between 2, 3, or 4 bottles per month in your delivery and you'll save about 15% off the regular price. The cost for a 2-bottle subscription is $21.38, 3 bottles is $30.38, and 4 bottles is just $38.25. Even with a $15.37 or so shipping fee on top of this, we actually felt like this was really affordable, so definitely go with a subscription when you shop here.
Pick your flavors
Another perk of the monthly subscription of Hank's Salsa is that you get to choose your flavors in each box. There are 7 flavors total, so you'll always be asked which ones you want in your upcoming order. This allows you to try new flavors here and there or stick to your favorites.
Very basic website
We assume you can cancel your salsa subscription at any time, but Hank's doesn't explicitly go over this. They also don't list a return policy or let you know what part of the month they send out their shipments. Their website is really quite basic and besides showing you the name of the flavor, nutrition facts, and some of the ingredients, there isn't a lot of information beyond that. There are no customer reviews on their website, so we had to look elsewhere for feedback.
A crowd favorite
What we found from people online about Hank's Salsa Co. was that, in short, people love them. People local to Oklahoma where the company is based often discover their salsas at farmer's markets or straight from the company's store on-site. Customers get hooked on these flavors and give them as Christmas gifts, birthday presents, or just keep their pantry stocked for themselves. Hank's is a big hit and we read many comments about how people proclaim this to be the best salsa they'd ever had.
A must-try
If you can handle some heat, then you've got to try a Hank's Salsa Co. subscription. The bottles are fun and unique, the flavors are surely unlike anything you've had before, and the pricing is truly reasonable. We wish there was a little more clarity on ingredients and possible allergen information, but it's obvious that this company wishes to keep their hard-earned formulas to themselves as much as possible. If you have questions about returns or subscription details, you'll just need to reach out to the company directly. We've given Hank's Salsa Co. a high rating because of their unique variety of flavors and flexible approach to monthly subscriptions.
Fredericksburg Farms began in Texas Hill Country as a wholesale nursery selling poinsettias and geraniums. They grew their business to include gourmet food based on their own recipes, a soy blend candle line, and handmade soaps and lotions. The company's goal is not just to provide quality products, but to give customers a taste of home - the kind of warmth they say that "feels like it came straight from Grandma's kitchen.”
Prepaid or pay-as-you-go subscriptions
There are a lot of subscription choices from Fredericksburg Farms that can be prepaid for a certain duration or you can do a per-delivery payment plan. If you prepay, your subscription automatically ends at the end of your paid deliveries, making it hassle-free. The selection of gourmet foods you can have delivered include BBQ sauces, jellies and preserves, chili mixes, mustards, syrups, jalapeño products, peach products, and our favorite - salsa.
12 oz salsa jars
The flavors of the 12 oz jars of salsa from Fredericksburg Farms includes peach, salsa verde, ranch roasted chipotle, cilantro and garlic, caliente, black bean and corn, roja a la charra, tomatillo, and a homemade hearty salsa mix. In addition to buying an individual jar of salsa, you could opt for a salsa gift box that includes four different flavors and even one that has two bags of chips as well.
Recipe suggestions
You can read the full ingredient label for each flavor of salsa on the Fredericksburg Farms' website. They're free of things like high fructose corn syrup, dairy, and gluten. The salsas are produced in a facility that comes in contact with tree nuts, so keep this in mind if you have a severe allergy. We like that the company gives you ideas for how to use their salsas aside from the typical chips and dip. Most flavors come with around 7 recipes you could try the salsa in, which is a fun way to switch things up.
Save with a subscription
Each jar of Fredericksburg Farms salsa is $8.95 and a gift box with four flavors is $58.95 or $68.45 if you get one with chips. If you do the math, it's cheaper to buy 4 salsa individually than to buy them together in a gift box. The exception to this is the subscription. For $51 (plus $9.95 for shipping), you'll get the 6 best-selling salsas delivered at regular intervals you choose. This is slightly less expensive than buying each salsa separately. Customers can choose to have their salsas delivered between monthly and every 6 months for up to 6 total orders. There are a lot of options, so it should cater to most people's schedules.
30-day refund policy
The refund policy for all products from Fredericksburg Farms is that you can initiate a return for most new and unused items within 30 days of delivery for a refund. To initiate a claim, you must call them and they need to receive your merchandise within 45 days of delivery.
Helpful, honest customer feedback
Fredericksburg Farms doesn't say exactly when they ship their subscription orders out, so it could be the same time each month or vary a bit. Otherwise, the information about orders is pretty straightforward here. There are reviews for each jar of salsa that you can read through to learn about how people feel about the spice level, ingredient blend, delivery, and more. These are extremely insightful and will be your best friend when choosing flavors, since there is no Better Business Bureau rating for the company or many third-party reviews. However, when you subscribe, you get 6 flavors, so you'll always have a well-rounded selection on hand.
Good quantity at a good price
What we really like about the salsa subscription from Fredericksburg Farms is that you have a lot of options for delivery frequency and amount. It's fun that you always get a variety of flavors, so you'll be well stocked up on salsa every time your order arrives. If you like a rotation of flavors or surprises with every box, you won't get that here though. However, people seem really happy with the flavors from Fredericksburg Farms and there are plenty of recipes you can try out with them. If you want a good amount of salsa for a decent price, this is a great club to go about it.
The founder of Tienda Salsita, Catalina, traveled to Mexico in 2017 to study Spanish, explore, and live with a close family friend. It was there that Catalina learned to make salsa as she fell in love with the food, the country, and the people in Mexico. When she returned to the United States, she started making her stone-ground salsas at home and selling them to friends and family. Today Tienda Salsita includes a variety of flavor profiles and heat levels locally grown from small farms in Sonoma County, California using sustainable agricultural practices.
Class and decadence
Tienda Salsita has a beautiful website that brings a new sense of class and decadence to exploring salsa flavors. All the flavors reflect true authenticity and an homage to Mexican culture. Each type of salsa listed on Tienda Salsita's website has a series of photos highlighting different uses for the blend and also shows all the ingredients. Shopping this website is a truly enjoyable experience since everything is so clearly organized and gorgeously displayed.
Olive oil-based
The salsas you get from Tienda Salsita are made with an olive oil base and include other ingredients like chiles, tamarind, garlic, vinegar, Mexican oregano, and more. The salsas will last 12 months after opening and can be refrigerated for the longest possible freshness. However, Catalina herself says she keeps her salsas on the counter since she uses them frequently and the olive oil will coagulate when cold. So it's up to you.
Individual purchasing options
Salsas can be purchased individually ranging from $7 for a 4 oz jar to $45 for a 32 oz jar. Prices vary based on flavor and ingredients. You could also buy 3-packs of the 9 oz jars for $45 that come in simple, yet high-end style packaging.
Save with prepayment
The salsa club from Tienda Salsita includes your choice of 3 or 6 salsas per order. They come quarterly and are shipped in the months of August, December, February, and May. You'll be charged $61.75 for each delivery if you pay-as-you-go for 3 salsas or $110.50 for 6 salsas; otherwise you could save 3% if you prepay for 2 orders, or 5% if you prepay for the whole year. Not only do you get free shipping when you sign up for the salsa club from Tienda Salsita, but you can also save 10% on your first order if you sign up for their emails.
More than just salsa
With each delivery of salsas you'll get a list of recipes you can make using the different blends. Sometimes you'll get special trinkets from the owner's travels to Mexico, stories about the salsas you receive, and exclusive seasonal salsas, mole, mermelada, and specialty spice blends.
Exchanges offered in some circumstances
If you change your mind about an order you place from Tienda Salsita, you can reach out for approval for an exchange either by phone or email. You'll need the original receipt and it will be up to the company whether or not your particular situation will qualify for an exchange. Nowhere does it mention that refunds of any kind are offered, so we wouldn't expect this.
Loved by customers
Customers can leave reviews for the salsa flavors and club on Tienda Salsita's website. There aren't many, but what we found was exceptional. People were happy with how the box, tape, paper, and even packaging peanuts were compostable or dissolve in water. People have enjoyed the Tienda Salsita flavors for years and especially appreciate that they are made with an olive oil base. They tend to be used for far more than just chip dipping, as customers enjoy adding them to daily meals and testing out the company's recipes. The company isn't rated by the Better Business Bureau, but we have no concerns over their reputation or the quality of their products.
Gourmet and high-quality
This is undoubtedly the highest-quality salsa club that we found. The salsas are beautifully packaged, hand-crafted, and are made with only the most authentic, freshest ingredients. People search far and wide to find salsas like these, so if you are willing to spend a bit more on a salsa subscription, a little goes a long way when it comes to Tienda Salsita's blends and it would truly be a gourmet treat.
Based out of Taos, New Mexico, Made in New Mexico offers an array of local delights like jams, jellies, jewelry, clothing, decor, salsa, and more. Since 2005, people have visited the area looking specifically for authentic New Mexico and Southwestern products, so Made in New Mexico opened up a retail store and launched a robust online site to satisfy their customers. The company is committed to quality and authenticity, believing that the historical significance of their location demands respect, so every item they sell is sourced from artisans, craftspeople, and micro-businesses of New Mexico.
A variety of brands
When you're browsing the selection of salsa flavors from Made in New Mexico, you'll notice that there is a variety of brands available like Bossy Gourmet, Fresh Chile Co, Los Roast, Santa Fe Seasons, Jesusita's Salsa Fresca, and many others. Each brand supplies just a few different flavors and they vary in size and price. You can filter down salsa by the brand you like, price, and heat level to help you pick something you'd enjoy.
Jars starting at $8.99
The price for a single jar of salsa ranges from $8.99 to $10.99 and most of them come in 16 oz jars. When you select a salsa you're interested in, you can look at the nutrition facts and ingredients on the label, see highlights about the brand and flavor, and even read customer reviews.
2 salsas a month
If you're like us and have no idea where to start with choosing a salsa from Made in New Mexico, the subscription is definitely the way to go. For $15.95 + shipping you can get a delivery every 30 days of 2 new flavors of salsa. Some months might include their tried-and-true flavors while others include brand-new flavors that just launched. You can cancel, skip, or auto-renew your membership at any time, so it's pretty flexible.
10% off deals
If you sign up for emails from Made in New Mexico, you'll get 10% off your first subscription order. Plus, when you join the salsa subscription club, you'll get a 10% off code for all future purchases on their website that can be used to purchase any other products you want to try (or to stock up on a subscription flavor you fell in love with).
Shipping based on zip code
The cost of shipping for individual products and your salsa subscription from Made in New Mexico will depend on your zip code. For us, shipping was $9.50, so the total each month for two new salsas and delivery was $25.45. This is a fairly inexpensive treat for yourself or gift for someone else, so it's a great option. As long as your salsa is still in resalable condition, it is also eligible for returns within 30 days of purchase, but you'll have to submit a return request to the company first or else your order will not qualify.
Great feedback from customers
There is no Better Business Bureau rating for Made in New Mexico, but you can see what people say about individual flavors of salsa on their website. Some types only have a couple of reviews from customers, but the monthly salsa club has 26 reviews and an average of 4.8 out of 5 stars, so it's rated pretty high. People say the deliveries are always on time, the flavors are delicious, customer service is amazing, and it makes a fantastic gift that people are always excited to get.
One of our top picks
For salsa subscriptions, Made in New Mexico is a wonderful choice. You'll be supporting small, home-grown companies and the pricing is totally affordable. There are nearly 30 flavors here that you'll get to taste over time, so you won't get bored with the deliveries that come to your door. We like that you can return salsa if you need to, it's easy to skip or cancel your subscription, and this company is easy to contact and work with if you run into questions. Made in New Mexico is among our top choices for salsa subscription clubs.
Angry Tomato Salsa began in 2017 after the founder, Dana Steenberg, decided to pursue salsa-making as more than just a hobby. He partnered with festivals, growers, and markets near the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin to grow the brand. They recently relocated to New Richmond to be near their production plant located in Hudson, Wisconsin. Angry Tomato Salsa prides itself in seeking out the best ingredients without adding sugar to any of their recipes and processing everything in a gluten-free facility.
Single jars or bundles
The flavors of salsa from Angry Tomato Salsa include Beginner, Italian Olive, Middle Man, Southwest, and The Boss. They can be purchased as single 16 oz jars or as a bundle with 3-5 jars in each order. Each bundle has a slightly different mix of flavors. For example, The Three Amigos bundle includes Beginner, Middle Man, and The Boss, or the On The Lighter Side bundle has Italian Olive, Southwest, and Beginner. A basic description of the flavors is listed, so you can get an idea of which salsas you'd want to try first. They range from mild with ingredients like smoky green chiles, sweet onions, and savory olives and to spicy with jalapeños and ghost peppers.
One-time purchases or subscription
You can do one-time purchases of Angry Tomato Salsa or subscribe to recurrent deliveries. When you sign up for a subscription, you'll get a code for a free jar of salsa with your first order. A single jar of salsa is $11 and bundles are $29.99. You won't get a discount for subscribing, so the price is the same whether you do a one-time purchase or not.
Free shipping on orders over $75
Angry Tomato Salsa includes free shipping if you place an order of at least $75 of salsa. Plus, if you order 6 jars as part of your subscription or one-time order, the 6th jar will be 50% off. If you're not going to be ordering this much salsa (because $75 worth or 6 jars is a lot) the cost of shipping is $8.95, so that's something to take into consideration because you might end up paying this with every order.
Vague company policies
Angry Tomato Salsa's website is really basic, so there aren't a lot of details about their products on their FAQ page like how they package their salsas, how long or if they are shelf stable, or what part of the month they send shipments. There is a 30-day return policy listed, but it doesn't seem to totally match up with the products being sold. It mentions that you can contact the company via email to initiate the return, but the products need to be unused and unworn (?!) with the original tags attached. Then further down it mentions that perishable items cannot be returned like food items, flowers, or plants. Considering Angry Tomato Salsa only sells salsa, it seems that they used a generic return policy and didn't cater the wording to match their company very well.
Insightful reviews
There is no Better Business Bureau rating for Angry Tomato Salsa, but this small business has high reviews from their customers. They allow people to leave feedback about each flavor of salsa on their website and people really love what they get here. Sometimes the reviews give more specific descriptions of what the taste of each recipe is like, so be sure to read through these if you're having a hard time choosing which flavor to go with. Most flavors have 5 out of 5 stars, so it's unlikely that you'll be disappointed with your selection.
Rigid schedule and slightly expensive
Although you can skip or cancel your orders at any time, we wish there was a little more flexibility with the delivery schedule here so that you could get orders outside of the monthly schedule. The cost of salsa plus shipping does seem a little expensive as well, so it would be fun to try out some flavors from Angry Tomato Salsa and see if you fall in love with them. Otherwise there are other good options for salsa clubs that you'll find higher up on our list. Angry Tomato Salsa's subscription club gets a just-above-average rating from us.
Casa de Jorge Salsa Company boasts that they are the best salsa company in North America. The company is based out of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and every so often you can find them at big festivals around the country where you can try their salsa and buy from them directly. All of their salsas are available on their website listed under categories mild, medium, hot, and seasonal. You can buy individual jars or purchase them in packs.
Great salsa descriptions
Each jar of salsa from Casa de Jorge comes in an 11 oz size. An individual jar costs $7, which is really reasonable. When you select a flavor, you can read a description of the taste, the full ingredient list, and even recipes that you could try with that particular salsa. The availability of each jar is listed so you know how many are still in stock through the website. There is plenty of information to give you a good idea of what a flavor might taste like and if you want to try it out.
Exciting flavors
We noticed that the salsas from Casa de Jorge are gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and made with fresh ingredients that are usually allergen-free. Some of the flavors you can try here include peach, stupid hot, pickleback, Christmas City cranberry, blueberry limoncello, cilantro lime mild, sriracha ghost pepper, and more. The list of flavors was unique and really exciting, so if you're looking for flavors you've never experienced before, Casa de Jorge may be exactly what you need.
$25.99/month for subscribers
If you want to try the full spread of salsas from Casa de Jorge, you can sign up for their subscription membership for $25.99/month (includes shipping). It is a 12-month membership, but you can cancel at any time. Two salsas will be delivered each month and you won't know beforehand which kinds you'll receive. Their usual flavors will be included in subscriptions and you'll get to try their seasonal flavors as well.
Free shipping on orders over $21
After signing up for a subscription from Casa de Jorge, your first order of salsa will ship immediately. After that, all subscription orders go out the nearest business day to the 15th of the month. Shipping costs for individual jars are $7 (or at least they were for us based on our location), but if you order 3 or more jars, you'll get free shipping.
Is it worth it?
It's great to be able to get deliveries of fun, new salsa for a whole year without having to revisit the website for new orders, but the price of the Casa de Jorge subscription is a little confusing for us. If you were to order 2 jars of salsa on your own, the cost is $14 plus a $7 shipping cost, so it seems like you'll be spending more if you do a subscription. Besides the convenience, we aren't sure if it's totally necessary or even that great of a deal to sign up for recurrent deliveries.
Return unopened salsa when needed
If you don't wish to keep any product ordered from Casa de Jorge, you can pay to return it to the company for a refund of the purchase price. The salsa will need to be sealed/unopened in order to qualify for a refund. If your merchandise originally qualified for free shipping, you'll be credited the purchase price, less the cost of shipping that the company incurred originally. There is no timeframe listed for when returns need to happen, so reach out to the company as soon as you decide you want to make one.
High customer satisfaction
With every flavor of salsa listed online, there is a place for customers to leave reviews about it. No doubt about it, people think that the salsas here are exceptional and the flavors are fun and unique. People say shipping is quick, service is great, and it's not uncommon to see that people have been repeat customers for years. There is no Better Business Bureau rating for Casa de Jorge, but we have no concerns about the reliability of the company or whether they're a good option for trying new salsa flavors.
Not completely convinced
In the end, we would love to try all the unique flavors from Casa de Jorge. Whether you fare better with the mild flavors or want something to set your mouth on fire, you'll have a good selection from this company. What we aren't totally convinced of is the need to subscribe to their deliveries. It seems to be at least the same price, if not more, to get recurrent deliveries when you take shipping costs into consideration as it would be to buy individual jars a la carte. Sometimes it's a better deal to do a subscription and you get access to flavors you otherwise wouldn't, but that's not the case here. If you love these salsas and want someone else to pick the flavors for you, then have them delivered to your door, then go ahead with a subscription to Casa de Jorge. Otherwise, test out flavors you choose on your own time and possibly save a few dollars.
After feeling bored of the salsas on the market, the friends and creators of Jalapa Jar decided to make their own blend of roasted, blended, and balanced combinations the way they liked it. The company started out in Texas and then migrated to New York where they continued to gain popularity among customers. In an effort to keep their salsas fresh, they use fresh roma tomatoes, no artificial preservatives, and keep the salsas refrigerated. Jalapa Jar is made in small batches, extracting the full flavor from each ingredient and blending them together. The salsas are perfectly minced for dipping or dressing rather than being overly runny or too chunky.
Unique seasonal flavors
To get your mouth watering, consider the flavors of salsa and hot sauce available from Jalapa Jar: caramel apple & red jalapeño (seasonal), smoked pumpkin & poblano (seasonal), original mild blend, Brooklyn medium blend, hot Austin blend salsa, medium tomatillo blend, mild sweet + heat salsa, and serrano blend (very hot). In total there are 8 salsa flavors and even some Jalapa Jar t-shirts and a jar opener you could add to your order.
Founders Club deliveries
Individual 16 oz. jars of Jalapa Jar are just $6 each, but you have to do a minimum order of 3 salsas here; otherwise the company says it is inefficient and too expensive to ship. If you want a few jars at a time, The Founders Club is the way to go with a quarterly salsa delivery subscription for just $36 + shipping. It includes 6 jars of fresh salsa in every box delivered every 3 months, but you can cancel any time. You get to choose your flavors for each delivery, so in addition to the options that are always available from Jalapa Jar, you could also try their seasonal flavors as they come and go.
Exorbitant shipping fees
All of the salsas that arrive from your subscription are fresh, so they need to be refrigerated right away. Each one has a 16-week shelf life, so they should last plenty of time before your next delivery shows up. When you subscribe, you'll get flat rate, next-day shipping that costs $9.99 if you live in the eastern United States, but that cost may go up depending on your zip code if you're in the western region of the United States - we were shocked to see that shipping that far was $30. This is one of the most expensive deliveries we've run into, so it is definitely something that would make us hesitate to sign up for a subscription here.
Final sale salsas
Since salsas are fresh and perishable, Jalapa Jar does not accept returns on any of their salsa or hot sauce items. If there is an issue with packaging or you receive an incorrect item, you can reach out to the company, but in general everything is final sale.
A local treasure
Jalapa Jar has been featured by The New York Times, Eater New York, Insider, Brooklyn, and Thrillist. They aren't rated by the Better Business Bureau and they don't have unfiltered customer reviews on their website, but from what we found on third-party sites, the company is well-liked. We read reports from people saying it was the best salsa they'd ever tried, so take that into consideration. For locals, Jalapa Jar is a fun find and they're well-supported at local markets. They don't have as much feedback as other brands we found, but they have high ratings from the few things we saw.
Fun depending on your location
If you live in the eastern United States and can get the flat-rate $9.99 shipping fee, Jalapa Jar has fun seasonal salsas that would be worth trying. Their non-seasonal blends weren't anything we felt too excited about, since they seem somewhat similar to what you might be able to find somewhere else. But, for any of us who'd wind up spending around $30 just for shipping, this is an unreasonable option for a salsa subscription, and we would choose to look elsewhere.
Since 1991, Salsa Express has offered over 2,000 types of hot sauces, salsas, and condiments for customers to try. They claim to have the largest selection of salsas and southwestern food items available in one place with an unsurpassed shopping experience and superior customer service. Salsa Express began as a mail order company and is now a leading e-commerce company in their category. In 2011, Salsa Express was bought by Food E Concepts, a specialty food company, and has been run by them ever since.
Some recognizable brands and flavors
The idea is that with your subscription from Salsa Express you'll get salsas that are truly unique from regional producers and ones you won't find at your local grocery store. In reality? Some of the products sent by Salsa Express are ones you could easily swing by and get from the stores you usually shop at, so you may not always get something new (to you) with your delivery. Well-known brands like Late July, Frontera, Mateo's Gourmet Salsa, Santa Fe Seasons, Margaritaville, and others are ones we recognized right off the bat.
Explore the selection
Just for fun you can browse through all the salsas available for individual sale from Salsa Express to see what their ingredients contain and see all the potential blends that you may get in your subscription. Some of the salsa categories include medium, mild, chipotle, corn, fruit, garlic, green/tomatillo, and more. The prices of individual salsas range from $3.99 to $8.99 depending on the size of jar and brand. In total, there are about 145 different salsas you can explore.
Choose your quantity and duration
You can choose to have either 1 or 2 salsas delivered to you with each subscription delivery. They're available in 3, 6, 9, or 12 month durations and Salsa Express will never auto-renew. Prices range from $49.99 for 1 jar delivered for 3 months to $264.99 for 2 different jars delivered for 12 months. Shipping is a flat rate of $8.99, so this will always be tacked on to the total cost of your salsas.
Specify your preferences
When you're setting up your subscription, you will be asked your preferred heat level, the start month for your shipments (salsas typically arrive toward the end of each month), the delivery frequency (every month, every other month, every third month, every fourth month), and if you'd like to add a personalized gift message prior to the initial shipment.
No refunds
Since all the products sold through Salsa Express are food items, they have a no-refund policy across the board. This is primarily a safety issue since they don't want to receive food back from customers and then ship it to someone else. The only exception is if you receive a damaged item and report it to Salsa Express within 7 days of delivery.
No helpful customer reviews
On top of not having a Better Business Bureau rating, the salsa subscription here does not have any reviews from customers on the Salsa Express website. People can leave reviews on individual salsa flavors, but it's not very helpful since you never know what flavors you'll end up getting in your monthly box. On a third-party site we did see that people liked ordering from Salsa Express because they always had a good experience and the expiration dates were far out on each item. With flat-rate shipping, customers are able to stock up on their favorite flavors pretty easily. However, no one mentioned doing the salsa subscription, so it's hard to say how well it performs.
Not the best subscription option
Ultimately, some of the salsas in the Salsa Express subscription are high-quality, unique blends that we'd be excited about. Others are pretty common and may not necessarily be worth the cost of what you pay for the subscription each time. Salsa Express earns points in our book for having a huge selection of salsas that you might receive, but we aren't big fans of all of them. Rather than signing up for a subscription here, we recommend just ordering your favorite salsas individually.
Month Club Store is the second company in our review that is owned by Food E Concepts. They've been in business over 19 years and describe themselves as a collaboration of experts in retail, marketing, and ecommerce with a commitment to product quality and customer satisfaction. Their staff attends food shows annually, making special buys and identifying new and exciting products to feature for their month clubs. Aside from salsas, their clubs include foods like pickles, Bloody Mary's, hot sauce, olives, jelly, snacks, soup, and mustard.
Subscriptions-only
The listing for a salsa subscription from Month Club Store is nearly identical to that of their sister company, Salsa Express. However, you can't purchase individual salsas here like you can with Salsa Express. Month Club Store only offers subscriptions and you can't see their full inventory of flavors for a heads up on ingredients or what you might expect to be sent your way. Their graphic on the salsa subscription listing shows unique, harder-to-find brands like Fredericksburg Farms (who we've reviewed separately), Tatemada, and Desert Pepper, as well as those that you probably pass frequently in the grocery store aisle like Late July, Mateo's, Frontera, and others.
Specify your heat level and delivery schedule
As a Month Club Store salsa subscriber, you can choose whether you want to receive one or two jars of salsa per month. You can also specify your desired heat level - just to make sure you receive flavors you'll actually want to eat. Subscriptions can be either 3, 6, 9, or 12 months long and you'll pay upfront for your subscription so it's ready in one go. As you're selecting preferences, you can indicate the month that you want the salsa deliveries to start, the frequency (every month, every other month, every third month, or every 4th month), and if you want to add a gift note.
Shipping included in pricing
The price of a salsa subscription from Month Club Store ranges from $49.99 for 1 salsa for 3 months to $264.99 for 2 salsas for 12 months. Shipping is included in all pricing, which is awesome, and the company will never auto-renew your subscription.
Likely no refunds
If Month Club Store follows suit with their sister store, Salsa Express, we can safely assume that they don't allow for returns of any kind. However, Month Club Store doesn't mention anything about it on their website. The only bit of information remotely close is where they say that if you get a salsa you really hate, you can always leave feedback with the company so that they know for future customers and deliveries. They don't say they will refund you, but rather will just take note of your opinion.
Scant ratings
On their website, Month Club Store boasts an "A+” rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but we weren't able to confirm this with the BBB at the time of our review. Besides that, there are no reviews from customers on the salsa subscription page and we couldn't find much else about Month Club Store to reassure us that their customer service is good, the food is high-quality, or anything else we typically hope to see from a business.
Not as exciting
We have a similar concern with Month Club Store as we did with their sister company, Salsa Express, and that's that since you are getting salsas from different brands, their value may not be equal to how much you pay for your subscription. They aren't all created equal in quality and quantity, so it's more of a gamble when you sign up here. You might get something pretty boring that you could have picked up with your weekly grocery shopping, and since Month Club Store doesn't show their full inventory, there is no way of knowing what their general spread is like. The salsas here don't excite us much, so Month Club Store has earned our lowest ranking.
If you have a birthday for a loved one coming up or you're getting started on a Christmas list, consider gifting a salsa club subscription. You don't have to keep something this fun all to yourself. We all know people who are really hard to buy gifts for, so this is a unique option that is sure to be a hit. You can simply order the subscription and change the delivery address to wherever you want and they'll start getting tasty surprises at the door based on the time interval you set.
Many salsa companies offering subscription services are small, sometimes family-owned businesses, and it feels good to be able to support these people. They will let you know what ingredients they use and how they package their salsas so that they arrive fresh and ready to enjoy. Sometimes you can pick the salsa flavors in your box and other times it might be a total surprise. Every subscription company is a little bit different in this way.
The fun (and hard) part of all this is picking the salsa subscription club that will satisfy your taste buds, fit in your budget, and work for your schedule. There are a lot of fun and unique choices out there, so to make sure you have the best experience, it's best to keep the following things in mind:
