Fortunately, you don't have to randomly browse the many kinds of slipcovers you'll find on Wayfair. Instead, jump directly to a category, like Futon Covers, Loveseat Slipcovers, or Sofa Slipcovers on their main product page. From there, it's easy to apply filters to narrow results down by color, slipcover design, cushion design, price, or attachment (elastic, hook, zipper, and so on). You can also click on the Sort & Filter button to have your results shown by customer rating or ascending/descending price, as well as adding more filters like dimensions, availability, and brand.

Reliable customer reviews

Because Wayfair does such a large amount of business, you can take advantage of customer reviews to give you an idea of which slipcovers really deliver great fit and function. For instance, their most popular sofa slipcover, with over 1100 ratings and an average score of more than 4 out of 5 stars, is the Velvet Plush Form Fit Stretch Box Cushion Sofa Slipcover by Winston Porter. Available in 8 colors at a starting price of $29.99, that's hard to beat!

Customer friendly policies

You'll also have a hard time finding a slipcover store with more customer-friendly policies than Wayfair's. Shipping is free on all orders over $49 - so if you decide to go for that popular slipcover we described, you'll just have to add a few throw pillows or other home extras to get it all delivered at no cost to you. Plus, Wayfair gives you a generous return policy of 30 days to return your slipcover if it isn't what you expected - with no restocking fees like some of Wayfair's rivals charge. Your returned items need to be in their original condition and packaging, though, and you'll have to pay for return shipping costs.

Top Ratings

While Wayfair may not have any custom slipcovers available, there's surely something in their inventory that will be a great fit for your furniture and a nice upgrade to what you currently have. And, with such an easy-peasy return policy, you won't have any issues if you need to return your slipcover and try a different size or style. Because Wayfair makes it such an enjoyable shopping experience to find slipcovers for every need, they easily earn our top recommendation among retailers.

Slipcover Shop has improved quite a bit since our last review, and we're excited to tell you about it. This New York-based, family-owned business specializes in custom work, with all of their slipcovers and other items proudly made in the USA - but their website used to be outdated and hard to look at. Not anymore! While it's still not the fanciest online slipcover store we've ever seen, the Slipcover Shop site is clean and much easier to shop now.

Ready-made or custom slipcovers

You've got two main options with this store: ready-made or custom slipcovers. Ready-made options are in stock all the time and usually ship out next-day, while custom designs are ready in a week. If you decide to go for the ready-made option, or if you're just not sure where to start, we recommend you begin by looking at the Help Center. There, you'll find sizing charts for the ready-made styles, an FAQ for custom slipcovers, and general guidance for making the right purchase.

Show Filters

So, how do you get started with your shopping? Let's say you decide on a ready-made slipcover. Once you've clicked on that category, you could start scrolling through all of the options - but the easier, albeit less obvious, choice is to click on the SHOW FILTERS box just above the images. There, you can narrow down the options by material, pattern, or color. With respect to fabric, choices range from all cotton and cotton/blend to suede, chenille, denim, stretch and suede. While naturally prices will depend on which slipcover you choose, we found lots of options within the range of $35 to under $100 in the ready-made styles.

Click on a style that interests you, and you'll be taken to your options, plus a closeup of the fabric, links for cushions and other related products, and ordering options. Be sure to find the dropdown box for which furniture you're trying to cover (e.g. chair, loveseat, sofa). If you have any doubts about measurements, be sure to click on the Additional Info tab for a handy measurement guide specific to the slipcover you're considering. And, the Specs tab lets you know the material, pattern, and care details.

Fabric swatches

And, right next to the Help Center tab, check out the Fabric Swatches link - you can order samples of most of their options. As they put it, "fabrics are not two-dimensional...many fabrics have a texture that a picture may not be able to bring out". Fabrics are sent via USPS the day after you request them, so you can see in-person how each one looks in your home and how it feels.

Custom slipcovers

Of course, ordering a custom slipcover requires a little more effort, but it's worth it to get the exact one you envisioned for your furniture. You begin by selecting a pattern - like poplin lilac, vintage suede, or twill rust - and then prepare to follow several steps to ensure the perfect fit. You'll have to click on the Price or Order button and walk through the selection of seat cushion shape, back style, and so forth. One of the lengthiest (but most necessary) parts of the process is filling out the printable worksheet for taking measurements. Never fear: Slipcover Shop takes you through each part, complete with helpful images, so that you'll have no problem knowing exactly what and where to measure. At the end of the process, you'll get a quote for the exact price of your custom slipcover.

Pillow slipcovers

Slipcover Shop also makes custom cushion covers for any furniture or pillows you have in your home - so if you've got a futon cover that has seen better days, a body pillow that you just can't find a sham for, or any oddly-shaped cushions that need an upgrade, reach out to them and see what they can do for you.

Free shipping

At Slipcover Shop, you'll get free shipping if you live in the continental US and your order is at least $69. You can also take advantage of their very reasonable return policy, but keep in mind that doesn't apply to custom orders: 30 days from delivery, must be in new/unused condition and in original packaging, and return shipping fees are on you. Slipcover Shop takes it a step further by allowing returns past the 30-day window, but expect a restocking fee in that case.

Great reputation

This retailer has a strong reputation, demonstrated very well by their accreditation and "A+" rating from the Better Business Bureau. In fact, not only did we not find any complaints on the BBB site, but we also noticed that Slipcover Shop had a flawless 5-star rating in its customer reviews there. That's a good indicator that you'll get what you expect when buying your slipcovers from this store.

High quality slipcovers

As the only provider of high-quality custom-made slipcovers in our review, we're glad that Slipcover Shop has proven itself and improved their site - because many customers prefer to have a one-of-a-kind slipcover tailored to their furniture. And, for those who are happy with ready-to-order designs, this store will happily oblige. Either way, if you want a reasonably-priced slipcover that's made in the USA and backed by a good company, we think you'll like shopping at Slipcover Shop.

Bed Bath & Beyond

Bed Bath & Beyond is ubiquitous - that means you can find them just about everywhere. So, you're probably familiar with the fact that their products are all over the spectrum, with basics you need for your home and novel gadgets and tools you never knew you needed. Saw it on TV? It's probably sold there. Spotted it at your friend's house? You guessed it, Bed Bath & Beyond likely has it too.

Great range of slipcovers

The selection of slipcovers at this store is pretty good, with just under 500 options listed in their online store. While you won't see any slipcovers on the luxury end of the scale, you'll still see a good range of colors, styles and price points.

Out of stock issues

One tricky bit with Bed Bath & Beyond is their product availability. We spotted several slipcovers that we liked, only to be disappointed when we clicked on them and found out they were out of stock. You can save yourself some grief by clicking where it says, "change availability". There, we found that out of nearly 450 slipcovers in their inventory, only 300 were in stock online and 3 were available at our local store.

Those filter and sort options can also help you spend less time browsing and more time finding slipcovers that work for you. Whether you want to drill down by color, customer ratings, brand, or price, you'll save yourself some work.

Slipcover product details

Once you find a slipcover you like, the product detail page offers a more in-depth description, color options, specifications, and customer reviews. We didn't find many slipcovers with lots of customer ratings, leading us to conclude that Bed Bath & Beyond isn't selling thousands of slipcovers every month.

Price match promise

This store offers a price match promise, so if you happen to spot your favorite slipcover at another store, chances are good that you can get it for the same price with this store. Bed Bath & Beyond may also save you money with their free shipping on orders over $39.

Fantastic return policy

Where Bed Bath and Beyond truly shines is their return policy. Not only is it generous at 180 days from the date of purchase, but it also doesn't require the items to be in new/unused condition. They want you to love your slipcover (or bath towels, or frying pan, etc.), and so if it doesn't work out the way you hoped, they want to make it right for you. With something that can be as tricky to fit as a slipcover, that's a huge plus - and it's one of the main reasons we ranked this retailer higher than many of their competitors.

Risk free

Shopping for a slipcover isn't so hard, but getting one that is the right fabric and fit can take some experimenting. Bed Bath & Beyond is the only retailer we found with no penalty for taking a chance on a slipcover and deciding that it needs to go back - because their generous return policy has you covered. You may find a better selection elsewhere, but we'd bet that you'll still be interested in what Bed Bath & Beyond has to offer because of that policy alone.

Overstock

You never know what you might find when shopping Overstock. Because the retailer specializes in - you guessed it - items that might have been overstocked by the manufacturer, their inventory can vary from one day to the next. But, you can count on having quite a few options when shopping for slipcovers at this online store.

Real customer feedback

Because so many people shop at Overstock, you can easily see which slipcovers get high marks from previous shoppers - and which ones look nice but wind up not getting many stars from buyers. One of this retailer's most-purchased slipcovers is the Stretch Sofa Slipcover by Stretch Fit. At the time of our visit to the site, it was priced at just $39.49 and had more than 850 reviews. Both on this slipcover's product page and the ones you'll find with other designs, you can get in-depth information ranging from fit/dimensions to fabric care, as well as Q&A and Tips & Ideas.

No custom slipcovers

The most expensive slipcovers you'll find on Overstock are sold in a set of 100: folding chair covers ideal for quickly dressing up a room for a party or reception. You'll pay just under $300, for a per-cover cost of less than $30. Beyond that, prices on Overstock range from less than $10 to just around $200. You won't find any super high-end or custom-fitted slipcovers here, so you'll have to shop elsewhere if that's a priority.

Free shipping

Overstock is one of the only retailers of slipcovers that offers free shipping on every single order - as long as you live in the continental United States. They also give you a generous return policy of 30 days, with no restocking fees, as long as you return your slipcover or other merchandise in new/unused condition with all original packaging.

We like how easy it is to find lots of options for slipcovers when shopping at Overstock. Free shipping for most customers and a good return policy, in addition to that great selection, put Overstock as a regular favorite when shopping for slipcovers.

Home Depot

• Cost: From $17.99 to $300
• Free delivery on orders $45+
• Returns: 180 days on new, unopened merchandise only

Home Depot is one of two home improvement stores in our review that happen to carry slipcovers. Given how many other home products this store sells, that's not surprising - and with more than 500 slipcovers to choose from Home Depot has a much bigger selection than their most similar rival in our evaluations (think big and blue).

Customer friendly website

We like how easy it is to shop the Home Depot website. You can click on the images at the top of the Slipcovers product page to go directly to the furniture, fabric, or style you like, but the easiest option is to use the filters on the left side. Select your slipcover type (arm chair, sofa, etc.), color, design, style, material, or price range, among other options, so that your results list is fine-tuned to only the slipcovers that are in line with what you think you need.

In your results list, you'll be able to see at a glance how much each slipcover costs, your color options for each style, and whether it's eligible for free delivery (on orders of $45+). Mouse over any slipcover and you'll also see if it's available for local pick-up or eligible for free ship-to-store. We also like that many of the slipcovers have ratings from customers displayed on that results page too, making it a breeze to see if a particular style is popular (or very much not!).

Large volume orders

While the prices on everyday slipcovers range from under $20 to $300, you might spot a more expensive option: the Black Chiavari Chair Cover, priced at $1,278.45. But, if you're paying attention, you'll also notice that those come in a set of 250: in other words, these are covers you might use to dress up enough chairs for a wedding reception or other more formal event.

Beyond that, the selection of slipcovers at Home Depot is neither the best nor the worst you'll find. They carry well-known brands like Serta, but most of their inventory is from Innovative Textile Solutions and QuickFit.

180 day return policy

Home Depot has a nice, long return policy of 180 days. However, their terms say that merchandise has to be in unopened condition to be eligible for a refund - so be sure that your slipcover is what you want before you open the package. On the other hand, we've had pretty good experiences with returning products ordered online to our local store for lots of reasons, even with opened packages, so you might try your luck if you get your slipcover out of the packaging and decide it's not worth keeping.

For most people, Home Depot isn't going to be the name that comes to mind when looking for slipcovers - but among big-box home improvement stores, it's actually not a bad choice. No, you won't find designer fabrics, custom-made slipcovers for your futon, or high-end styles here. But, if you like a decent selection combined with the convenience of picking up or returning purchases to a store near you, Home Depot could be the right place to get your slipcover.

Lowe's

• Cost: From $37 to $1,824
• Free shipping on orders of $45 or more
• Returns: 180 days from purchase date if new/unused

Lowe's is one of the most well-known names when it comes to home improvement, so it shouldn't be a surprise that they also carry slipcovers. While you may not see many (if any at all) at your local store, their website has an inventory of just over 100 options to choose from - giving you the convenience of online shopping as well as being able to make in-store returns if needed.

Variety lacking

Compared with other retailers of slipcovers, Lowe's didn't have much to leave us impressed. Their selections seemed to leave you between high-end styles from Sunset Trading, priced from $400 to over $1,000, and low-budget stretchy models and throw-over designs under $100.

Not much customer feedback

You can make your browsing easier by using the left-hand filters to narrow down the results by the type of furniture you're trying to cover, the color or fabric type, price and more. But, it's not like you're going to be overwhelmed with choices when there are so few available. Some of the slipcovers have customer ratings and reviews, but the majority have none - demonstrating that this is not exactly Lowe's biggest-selling product.

Free shipping

If you do spot a slipcover that looks like a good match, you'll get more information once you click the thumbnail image. Many of the products we found were eligible for free shipping (orders of $45+) either for home delivery or to a local store. If you enter your information for your local store at the top of the page, you can also see if any of their slipcovers are available for in-store pickup after you order online; however, in several major metro areas, we didn't find any slipcovers with this option.

Good return policy

Other than the convenience of in-store pick-up options, Lowe's really only has one other thing going for it when considering slipcovers: a 180-day return policy. Granted, your item has to be in new/unused condition, but you'll have a lot longer time to return it in person or via mail if it comes and you don't like it.

Don't get us wrong: generally speaking, we like Lowe's and think they're a great option for many products. However, most shoppers aren't going to find enough options for slipcovers there to make it worth the time to browse the site.

SureFit

SureFit got its start more than 100 years ago in Philadelphia, and since that time they've grown to be one of the most widely-distributed slipcover brands in the world. You may have even seen their home decor products at your local department store or other retailers of pillows, drapes, and other items. Fortunately, there's no need to have a brick-and-mortar store nearby: SureFit maintains an online inventory of more than 1,000 products that are available directly to consumers.

We love all of the helpful tools SureFit offers, to help you get the ideal slipcover for your furniture. Be sure to look towards the bottom of the site for their measuring guides, styling tips, and even their "Slipcovers 101" info. You can also contact their customer service team from 9AM - 5PM (EST) on weekdays, either through their toll-free number or live chat.

Wide range of slipcovers

You'll want to start by identifying what kind of cover you need: a pet furniture cover, a furniture cover, or a traditional slipcover. You'll find those categories at the top of the page. Here's what you can cover with a traditional design at SureFit:

Because there are so many options, you'll want to use the filters on the left side of the page. For example, in the Sofa Slipcovers category alone there were over 50 choices - so our shopping experience went much more quickly when we filtered by pattern, color, and price range.

Form fit or relaxed fit

Generally speaking, you'll choose between two fits: form and relaxed. SureFit's relaxed slipcovers use woven fabrics, can be adjusted more loosely and are a good choice if you have skirted furniture. On the other hand, form-fitting slipcovers use stretchy fabrics for a closer fit; this style fits your cushions and furniture's contours more tightly and is a good pick if you have T-cushions or box cushions. You'll find fabrics like cotton duck, stretch suede, designer suede, stretch pique, denim and many more.

Discounts available

Prices at SureFit range from $10 to just under $300 on most slipcovers, with the majority falling right around $150. As we browsed the SureFit site, we got a pop-up offering us a discount of 20% on our first purchase if we became a subscriber to their email list. That discount only applied to first-time customers, and there were other restrictions in place. At the time of our most recent visit, there was also a promotion featured at the top of the site, for a Buy One, Get One 50% off discount when using the provided coupon code.

Disappointing return policy

SureFit isn't as generous with their customer policies as some of their rivals. For example, you'll have to spend at least $119 to get free shipping. Also, if you need to return your slipcover, you'll have 30 days from the date of purchase, not from when you received your purchase - and you should expect a 10% "return processing fee" (in other words, a restocking fee) to be deducted from your refund.

Not the only negative

Unfortunately, that's not the only negative we discovered when evaluating SureFit. When we looked at the company's reputation with the Better Business Bureau, we found that the BBB gave this retailer a disappointing "D-" rating. While 18 complaints over 3 years isn't a huge number, the fact that SureFit left most of them unanswered is unacceptable. We found descriptions of calls to customer service where no one picked up the phone, $30 return fees taken from products that only cost $45, and so on.

At the end of the day, you might get a great-fitting slipcover by shopping at SureFit. However, if anything goes wrong - the color doesn't match, the cover doesn't do a good job of protecting your furniture as promised, and so on - you could be in for a really rough experience when trying to get a satisfactory answer from SureFit's customer service department. Because of this drop in reputation, especially as demonstrated by the "D-" at the BBB, SureFit falls to the bottom of our rankings for buying slipcovers online.
