Be Prepared Review 3.5 Star Rating

Be Prepared

3.5 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: 30-day, no-hassle policy

Be Prepared (from Emergency Essentials) lives up to its name. Several five-star reviews posted to the site praise them for their "low-price guarantee", meaning if you find a lower price within 30-days of your purchase, they will match the price. We were very impressed by the reviews we found praising this site for its competitive pricing and excellent service.

The company specializes in emergency preparedness, offering peace of mind for anyone who wants to plan accordingly for any unexpected event. Here are the main items offered on this online store:

  • Food
  • Water and storage
  • Meal ready to eat (MRE)
  • Gear
  • Survival kits

By simply clicking on a category, a customer can find out all items available. For example, the site breaks down what kinds of MREs one can buy, such as entrees, snacks, and combo packs.

What sets Be Prepared apart from other sites are the helpful guides. For example, if you don't know how to build your food storage, you can download an emergency preparedness list which will help you learn. You can also watch videos explaining why it is important to build a healthy inventory of emergency supplies.

The site also provides other helpful tools. Customers can find information on the following topics:

  • Recipes
  • Essential survival lists
  • Shelf life
  • Customizing your supplies
  • Tips on how to shop
  • Tips on how to store items

Regarding customer service, you can contact them via email, phone, or chat. Group orders have a minimum order requirement, but automatically qualify for free shipping. Individual orders, however, do have to pay for shipping, and customers from Hawaii and Alaska may be charged additional fees.

Overall, Be Prepared is very easy to navigate, and has a sporty vibe with bright colors such as the orange you might see emergency workers wearing. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any information about this company with the Better Business Bureau, and we did find a few reviews from customers who were disappointed with their experience. However, survival enthusiasts will enjoy shopping on this site. Those new to emergency preparedness will also find this site helpful and informative.

ReadyWise Review 3.5 Star Rating

3.5 Star Rating
  • Cost: $26.99 to $10,199.99

If you're looking for packaged, freeze-dried food items to increase your emergency food storage, ReadyWise offers a wide variety of options. In addition to their bulk food items, they also sell survival kits in many sizes, emergency hardware goods, and even generators. If you don't need to buy in bulk, you can select smaller packages from a catalog of everyday food items. All foods are dehydrated, easy to store for long periods of time, and simple to prepare in any environment.

  • Freeze-dried food for convenience, both for emergency preparedness and everyday use
  • Ample products for other survival needs, such as cooking tools and backpacks
  • Food options available that include vegan/vegetarian, gluten-free and organic
  • 30-day refund policy on unopened products

Among the emergency products, you'll find long-term food kits, starter kits, and bundles of meats, fruits, vegetables, milk, and eggs. For those sensitive to gluten, there are gluten-free foods available. And, if you want only organic foods in your survival storage, there are options, though few in number compared to non-organic foods.

In addition to emergency food items, there are a range of survival backpacks in different colors, each with the same assortment of emergency supplies. Included in that category is a dog survival kit and an emergency food supply ready grab bag of 60 servings. The site also has an inventory of hardware goods and tools such as solar backpacks, generators, large-capacity water storage tanks, filters and filtration bottles, fire starters, and portable cooking stoves.

Once you have all the emergency survival goods you need, you may decide to go on a camping trip. For that, you can purchase from their outdoor food selections packaged for short-term excursions. Choose from entrees, breakfasts, desserts with gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian options. For cooking, they provide several small stoves and fuel and ignition sources.

Should you be the type who is not interested in spending a lot of time in the kitchen, but you still want to eat more healthily than going out for fast food every day, you can purchase from their menu of freeze-dried foods in weekly or monthly amounts. Everything is available, including fruits and vegetables, soups, sweets, meats, and milk and eggs.

If you don't like what you've purchased, you can return any unopened and unused shipment within 30 days of purchase for a full refund after calling their customer service number or sending them an email. After 30 days, no credit or refunds will be granted. Some items will incur a restocking fee.

A fairly large number of people give ReadyWise an excellent rating. Most praised the helpfulness of customer service, the generous and tasty portions, top-notch packaging, fast delivery, and good prices.

Those who were unhappy with ReadyWise complained about items being out of stock, poor customer service and follow-up, high prices, damaged deliveries or no delivery of purchased products, and poor quality of some food products. Our biggest concern with ReadyWise's reputation is their "D-" rating from the Better Business Bureau, due to failure to respond to customer complaints filed there. Granted, there were only 6 that didn't get a response from ReadyWise - but that's still half a dozen opportunities where the company should have shown a professional, appropriate approach to their customers.

Overall, we recommend ReadyWise as a decent option to consider when creating your emergency preparedness plans around food and supplies. The bulk packaging is sturdy and plentiful. One option provides over 4,300 servings! The fact that they offer non-bulk purchasing lets you try their items at a lower cost before committing to a larger purchase. Not to mention the convenience of preparing food in just a few minutes on a busy day. Just keep in mind that ReadyWise's customer service may leave you hanging if you have an issue.

1 800 Prepare Review 3 Star Rating

1 800 Prepare

3 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: 30 days

1 800 Prepare is a website that specializes in emergency preparedness products. This site has a very good selection of these products: including multiple types of survival kits, individual preparedness items, and C.E.RT. products.

The 1 800 Prepare website has a user friendly layout and appearance. Across the top of the site there are general use links like "For Your Home" and "For Your Car". Along the left side are the more specific links such as; "School Survival Kits", "Shelter" and "Warmth and Fire Safety".Clicking any of the specific links on the left takes you to a page showing all products within that category.

Best Survival Gear Stores

The return policy is pretty standard minus a steep restocking fee. Damaged or defective products will be fully refunded, and any product can be returned (except food/water items and potassium iodide products) within 30 days for a full refund less a 20% restocking fee. As far as we can tell there is not free shipping offers at 1 800 Prepare. We set up a mock order for over $600.00 and the cheapest option for shipping was over $65.00. That said, the other sites reviewed and rated higher have a much more customer friendly shipping policy.

While the 1 800 Prepare website does have a great selection of emergency preparedness supplies, it does not have any food supplies like the higher rated sites. That along with the poor shipping and return policies all contributed to the very average rating.

Quake Kare Review 2 Star Rating

Quake Kare

2 Star Rating
  • Return Policy: 30 days

Quake Kare is a website that sells emergency preparedness products and a limited selection of emergency food products. This site also has some good emergency information and the latest disaster news.

Although the selection is not as thorough as other sites reviewed here, there are many useful emergency products sold on Quake Kare. Many different types of survival kits (home, office, school kits)and emergency kits (pandemic flu kits and hygiene kits) can be found by clicking the navigation links on the left side of the screen. Also, in the Emergency Supplies section, sanitation supplies and emergency food can be found among other things.

Best Survival Gear Stores

The website for Quake Kare is not as easily navigated as other sites and some information is difficult to find. During the purchase process we found the shipping costs to be expensive and no order size resulted in free. Quake Kare does offer a solid return policy. A full refund of the purchase price is available for items returned within 30 days and with no restocking fees.

The selection of products at Quake Kare is limited and the website itself is not as user friendly as the others reviewed. Those factors combined with the shipping rates being above normal, caused this site to receive our lowest rating in this category. If you are looking for survival gear products we recommend you shop a much higher ranked company.

Survival Gear Store FAQ

The world is a very unpredictable place. Natural disasters, man-made crises, and even employment loss can create a food shortage for individuals and communities. Stockpiling an amount of food, water, and emergency supplies for an uncertain future can make living conditions more tolerable in such situations.
A 72-hour kit, also known as a "bug out bag" or "go bag" , is usually in the form of a bag, backpack, or hard container. It typically contains emergency essential supplies such as first aid kits, flashlights, rain ponchos, flares, pocket knives, water filters or water treatment kits, and various other tools. In the event that you have to leave your home due to a natural disaster or civil unrest, having a 72-hour kit that you can grab on your way out the door or keep in the trunk of your car will ensure that you will have what you need for self-sufficiency until the emergency ends or you get to a safer location.
Freeze-dried food starts out as normal, frozen food. It is put into a chamber from which all the air and moisture are rapidly pulled out of the food. The dehydrated food is then stored in an airtight pouch or container. Without the water and air, the food will be able to be stored for long periods of time.
Dehydration is a slower process of naturally drying a food item using air and heat. Some water and air is retained in the food, making its shelf life shorter. Freeze-drying is rapidly performed in a vacuum chamber, leading to better quality, retained nutritional properties, and longer shelf life.
Most often, the food simply needs to have water added back to it, whether hot or cold, and mixed. Freeze-dried foods can also be cooked in a pot on the stove, in a microwave oven, or in a conventional oven according to the manufacturer's instructions.
At a minimum, you should have food, water itself as well as a purification method/system, a blanket, a first aid kit, and basic tools to suit the tasks you're most likely to need them for. As secondary considerations, have a change of clothes, extra money in cash, and basic toiletries for hygiene and good health. Be sure to include phone numbers and copies of essential documents.
Survival gear is important for everyone to have because natural disasters can happen anywhere. And, in cities there are still risks of civil unrest, widespread destruction from earthquakes and storms, and increases in the risk of contagious diseases or pollutant contaminations. Being able to leave quickly or shelter in place with the things you need to survive is often more important in a city because the natural world is less likely to provide the things you need (like food you can harvest or hunt, fresh water you can collect, and so on).
Each food has a different shelf life depending on factors like packaging, type of food, and processing methods used to preserve it. Read the labels carefully and choose a storage method that will maximize the shelf life of the food item. Typically, this means storage in a consistently cool, dry, dark place like a basement, closet, or pantry. For survival gear, ensure that no moisture can occur in or around the backpack, bag, or box where you store it.
