In the past, the only way to eliminate years of coffee, wine and cigarette stains was by going to the dentist and spending a lot of money for in-office treatments. Why spend the time and the cash on expensive professional teeth whitening when the same technology - and results! - are available for in-home use?
There are several types of do-it-yourself teeth whiteners on the market today. Some use silicone trays with whitening gel, in conjunction with powerful-yet-safe LED lights that accelerate the process, leaving you with a brighter smile in just a few uses. Others consist of topical solutions that are either swabbed onto the teeth or applied with adhesive strips. The best at-home teeth whiteners are specifically formulated to avoid creating any sensitivities in your gums and teeth.

AuraGlow is the highest-rated home teeth whitener on the market: out of more than 5,000 customer reviews, this product earned an average 4.5/5 stars, with over 70% of users giving it a perfect score. You won't find that with any other whitening system.
Let's take a look at how AuraGlow works. The two main components of the treatment are 35% carbamide peroxide gel and the mouth tray with LED light. The gel delivers fast whitening results without causing sensitivity issues, and the gel used by AuraGlow is made in the USA for your safety. Carbamide peroxide is safe for crowns, caps and veneers, polishes your teeth while whitening, and it won't harm your teeth's enamel.
The mouth tray is a one-size-fits-all and should fit anyone's mouth - without the annoying boil-and-mold trays used by some teeth whiteners. It's made of food-grade, BPA-free silicone, and it attaches easily to the LED light so that you don't have to hold the system in your mouth while it goes to work. The LED component uses 5 blue LED accelerator lights that speeds up the gel's whitening effects. Batteries are included and should last you up to 48 hours of use.
Here's how AuraGlow is applied: after rinsing the mouth tray with warm water and attaching it to the LED light, you apply the gel to the front surfaces of both the top and bottom of the mouth tray. The tray is then inserted into your mouth; turn the light on and keep it in your mouth for 30 minutes. Helpfully, the light turns off and on every 10 minutes, to let you know how much time remains in your treatment process.
AuraGlow sells for $48.50, and most customers will get free shipping. The kit includes enough gel for 20 treatments, so the price works out to $2.43 per use. That puts AuraGlow in the middle of the teeth whiteners we evaluated with respect to cost.
Where this system really stands out is in its results - and that's what you're looking for, right? We encourage you to check out the customer reviews, many of which include candid before-and-after photos, not stock photos or "dramatizations". You'll see significant improvements in the whiteness of customers' teeth, some of it happening in just two or three treatments.
We're also very impressed with AuraGlow's customer service. Not only does the product come with a 30-day satisfaction policy - more than enough time to use all 20 treatments, if desired - but it also gives you access to top-notch, friendly representatives who can answer your questions, make recommendations if you happen to experience gum sensitivity or any other issues, and resolve any problems you may have. Customers rave about how responsive AuraGlow was when they needed help, and even in the customer comments and questions you can see replies from the company itself.
AuraGlow is affordable, easy to use, and delivers effective teeth whitening with no hassle. Thousands of people have used this system and gotten great results, and we're sure you'll appreciate your whiter, brighter smile when using AuraGlow too. AuraGlow is our highest-rated teeth whitener.
iSmile promises to whiten your teeth just like the $500 procedure you could get at the dentist's office: up to 8 shades whiter in 7 days. The great news is, customers say that this teeth whitener actually delivers on that promise. At the time of our review, more than 450 people had given iSmile a flawless 5-star rating.
iSmile has several differences from other teeth whiteners on the market that might appeal to you. First, the treatment length is only 10 minutes per day, and it's only recommended that you use it for a total of 10 days (unless your dentist gives you approval to use it for a longer period of time). Compared with other systems that have to be used for up to a half an hour each day, or ones that promise results after 20-30 days, iSmile gets you results in much less time. This teeth whitener also comes with a desensitization gel, to reduce the likelihood of sensitivity even further.
In most other regards, this teeth whitener is comparable to other systems we evaluated. The mint-flavored whitening gel uses 35% carbamide peroxide to make your smile lighter and brighter, and the process is accelerated by a 5-LED light device that attaches to a one-size-fits-all mouth tray. The device beeps after your 10-minute treatment is finished, to let you know it's time to take it out of your mouth.
iSmile is competitively priced at $48, or just over $2 per use. Most customers will qualify for free shipping, and some may even receive same-day delivery at no extra charge.
Their teeth whitening product is backed by a 30-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you don't see the results you expected, you can get a full refund, no questions asked.
So, how well does it work? If customer feedback is any indication, iSmile produces noticeable results after just one treatment, for many people. Reading through user comments, it's easy to see that this is a teeth whitener that can be trusted to work: from pageant competitors who need to be show-ready to prospective job candidates who want their smile to leave a favorable impression, customers love how effectively and quickly iSmile makes a difference - with no side effects.
If you want one of the fastest-working teeth whiteners on the market, iSmile should be one of the first products you consider. It's easy to use and easy on the wallet, improves the whiteness of your smile in less time than competitor products, and comes with a strong satisfaction guarantee from a reputable company. iSmile is an excellent choice among at-home teeth whiteners.
MySmile is one of several teeth whitening systems we evaluated that uses a 35% carbamide peroxide gel in conjunction with a silicone mouth tray and LED accelerator light. As with most whiteners of this style, you'll apply the gel to the mouth tray, attach the tray to the light, and turn on the device. MySmile uses a 10-minute treatment cycle, which can save you some time compared to systems that expect you to keep the trays in your mouth for up to half an hour.
MySmile is one of the most expensive teeth whiteners in our review, at $31.99 for 9 treatments (or approximately $3.55 per use). The most similar competitor product gives you more than double the treatments for just a little more money - so you'll have to spend more for your follow-up/maintenance treatments with MySmile, to buy the gel refills more often.
We weren't impressed with MySmile's refund policy and satisfaction guarantee. You have 30 days to return the product, but it has to be in unused condition to be eligible for a refund. If you receive MySmile and it's defective, you're only able to get an exchange. So, according to the policy as written, you're out of luck if you try the whitener and don't get the improvement you hoped for.
On the other hand, while reading customer reviews we found a different - and better - story. One person described how the LED light had stopped working out of nowhere; when they contacted MySmile outside of the 30-day return window, not only did they get a replacement but also a handwritten apology from a company representative. Another person received a free set of gel refills after sending in a complaint that the whitener hadn't significantly improved the color of their teeth. So, while the posted policy may be lackluster, it seems that MySmile's practices are actually much more customer-friendly.
And, many customers say that MySmile worked very well for them: more than 75% of users gave the product a rating of 4 or 5 stars. Lots of reviews say that this teeth whitener delivered results after just one or two uses, without any sensitivity or other side effects. You may even be able to find some before-and-after photos in the reviews, to see for yourself.
So, while MySmile comes up a little short when looking at our top-rated teeth whiteners, it's still an effective system for improving your smile.
When it comes to DIY home teeth whiteners, Crest Whitestrips was probably the first name on the market. According to the manufacturer, this product can remove 14 years of teeth stains in just 22 days.
Crest Whitestrips uses an adhesive, filmy type of applicator to stick to your teeth. Unlike many whitening systems that use trays and lights, you can go about your day while you have a Whitestrip on your teeth: talk, work, even drink water as usual. That's a huge plus if you want to use this whitener during your commute, while running errands, or even just getting things done around the house. You'll apply the strips to the front of your upper and lower teeth, and leave them on for 30 minutes.
Active ingredients include PVP, PEG-8, Hydrogen Peroxide, Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Saccharin, Glycerin and Carbomer. Note that Crest Whitestrips aren't made with carbamide peroxide: the most common ingredient in other teeth whiteners we evaluated.
This kit comes with enough strips for 22 treatments, plus a bonus of 1-hour Express Whitestrips (which give you noticeable results after one treatment, but you have to leave them on for a full 60 minutes, not 30 minutes like the regular treatments). You should expect to pay just under $45 for the kit, or roughly $2.25 per use.
A common complaint with teeth whiteners that use strips is that the teeth stay discolored in the crevices between the teeth - only the surfaces get lighter. Customer reviews of Crest Whitestrips confirm that to be the case. Comments also frequently mentioned tooth and gum sensitivity, with many people describing a burning sensation over the 30 minutes needed to keep the strips in place. You may need to use a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. Other people said that the strips don't stay in place very well. When we used Crest Whitestrips, we found the taste to be off-putting and had a hard time leaving the strips on for the required half-hour timeframe.
But, for some people Crest Whitestrips does the job. Looking at customer photos, it's easy to see a difference in the whiteness of their smiles. So, if you like the idea of being able to go about your day while your teeth whitening system does its thing, or if you're allergic to the ingredients used by other whiteners, Crest Whitestrips could be the right fit for you. It's affordable, tested over many years, and backed by a well-known company. Just watch out for any developing irritation, and consider having some sensitive-teeth toothpaste on hand just in case.
Go Smile has been available for home use for many years, originally available in high-end department stores more than a decade ago and now available for easy purchase online.
This system uses a patented formula called Hyperox to whiten your teeth; the ingredients list indicates that Hyperox probably consists of Alcohol, PVP, Hydrogen Peroxide and flavoring. You apply it with single-use snap pack applicators that apply the formula to your teeth morning and night after brushing your teeth. At $24.95 for 7 days of treatment, Go Smile is the most spendy teeth whitener in our review: $3.56 per use.
Side note: this product ships with a microfiber cloth. We're not sure why, because you won't need it for any part of your teeth whitening regimen with Go Smile. Maybe it's so you can clean your glasses while you're in the bathroom too?
Unfortunately, it seems that Go Smile's manufacturing process has left customers with a product that is inferior to what used to be in the box. We found more than a few comments from users who said that the ampules were hard to open, and that getting a refund was almost impossible. Another person said that they experienced blisters on their gums, which is in line with several comments saying that the Go Smile product gave them a terrible burning sensation.
And yet, other customers said that this teeth whitener gave them fantastic results. They love the convenience of being able to apply the serum to their teeth on their way out the door, with no trays or strips needed. Almost 50% of Go Smile users gave it a 5-star rating, so it's definitely a mixed bag when it comes to customer satisfaction.
While Go Smile might be a convenient, effective teeth whitener for some people, it could result in painful gums for others. And, with so many customers reporting challenges in getting a refund, Go Smile comes up short when compared with the higher-ranked teeth whitening systems in our review.
Do you want a celebrity smile today? That's what Alta White says they can offer you. According to their online store, you use an applicator to apply whitening powder to all of the visible surfaces on your teeth. For some people, it might be tempting to buy Alta White, to avoid all of the messy trays and strips used by many other teeth whitening systems.
This product is priced competitively with others on the market, at a starting price of $39.95 plus $6.95 shipping on the first month's supply. There are discounts when you buy more than one package at a time, and a 90-day satisfaction guarantee seems promising.
However, Alta White is marketed by Pacific Ltd., who also sells Bella Labs' teeth whitener that we evaluated for our review. This company couldn't have a worse reputation: an "F" grade with the Better Business Bureau says it all. In fact, the BBB said that for the last two years, the company hasn't responded to their requests. The BBB challenged Alta White's marketing claims and noted the pattern of customers complaining that they were charged repeatedly without authorization, but Alta White (and Pacific Ltd.) failed to answer in any way.
In short , the only reason Alta White scores higher than its sister product is because its online store actually gives customers an idea of how the teeth whitener works. Other than that, everything else is the same: expensive prices, terrible reputation, and virtually zero chance that you'll be able to get your money back if you want to make a request under Alta White's 90-day satisfaction guarantee. We strongly recommend that you choose a more trusted, proven teeth whitener from our higher-ranked products.
Bella Labs promises professional results at home: no costly visits to the dentist, just seconds to apply, helps with plaque removal, and polishes while whitening, So far, so good, right? Would you like to know how the product work? So would we.
Is Bella Labs a powder? A paste? A gel? Are there trays, battery-operated lights to speed up the whitening process? You'll get none of those answers unless you purchase Bella Labs' teeth whiteners.
Sure, the company says they offer a 90-day money-back guarantee on their product, but can you actually reach someone if you have problems or questions, or want them to give you a refund? Good luck on that. Bella Labs is a Pacific Ltd. subsidiary, and everywhere we look, that parent company comes up with an extremely negative reputation (including another teeth whitener in our review). Do you really want to try and get good customer service from a company headquartered in Cyprus that doesn't even tell you how their teeth whitener is applied or what ingredients it has, unless you place an order to see for yourself?
At the end of the day, there's just no reason to spend $49.95 + $6.95 in shipping fees on Bella White, when there are so many other products available that are backed by reputable companies and that are 100% transparent about how their teeth whiteners work. We're certain you'll have a better experience with one of the higher-ranked treatments in our review.
Best of all, it's easy and affordable to shop for teeth whitening systems online. Customers appreciate being able to see before-and-after photos from real users, as well as the convenience of getting the kit and any necessary refills with just a few clicks of a mouse.
As you consider the various teeth whiteners available for purchase, how can you tell which one is right for you? Here are several handy criteria that can guide your decision:
TopConsumerReviews.com has reviewed and ranked the best teeth whiteners available today. We hope this information helps you find the right whitening system to give you the happy, white-and-bright smile you've been dreaming of!
As the old saying goes, "Smile, and the whole world smiles with you".
But for some people, the very act of smiling can be an embarrassing proposition. Maybe that person is a heavy smoker, or a coffee or tea drinker - both practices which can dull the look and feel of teeth. Even the aging process alone can dull a person's teeth. And when your pearly whites aren't so white anymore, people often shy away from showing them.
Now there is a solution beyond keeping your lips sealed and your teeth hidden from view - tooth whitening.
What is Tooth Whitening?
Tooth whitening is the process by which bleach, or another chemical agent, is applied to a person's teeth in order to help remove stains and discoloration, making them appear brighter. This is a procedure which can be done in a dentist's office, or at home using special at-home kits.
So which option is right for you? That depends on the time and money a person has to spend on the procedure. It also depends on the kind of staining your teeth are experiencing.
Tooth-whitening procedures work best on surface, or extrinsic, stains. Those are the kinds of stains which are produced by drinking too many dark-colored drinks (coffee, tea, red wines, and cola), smoking or chewing tobacco, or through the aging process. It is possible for teeth to have what is known as an intrinsic stain. That is a stain that actually occurs within the tooth itself. These kinds of stains can be caused by a number of things: overuse of fluoride products as a child, usage of antibiotics in children under age 8 and use of antibiotics by a mother who is in the second half of her pregnancy. Various forms of trauma also can result in intrinsic stains. Tooth whitening procedures do not have a great track record when it comes to handling intrinsic stains.
So the first step in deciding whether tooth-whitening will help improve the appearance of your teeth is to know which kind of stain is affecting them. If you are unsure, a quick trip to the dentist can help resolve the issue.
Do-it-Yourself Versus Professional Cleaning
Once you have figured out which kind of tooth staining you are dealing with, selecting a whitening option which works best for your needs is next.
As previously mentioned, most professional dentists are able to perform tooth-whitening procedures. Home-whitening products use a low level of bleaching agent, which can sometimes make them less effective than the products used by dental professionals. However, it is the most expensive option for whitening your teeth, at an average cost of $650 per procedure.
In contrast, at-home whitening kits can cost as little as $100 and do not require an appointment with a dentist. The procedure can be done in the comfort and convenience of your own home.
Tooth whitening, whether done at the dentist or at home, is not a permanent procedure. It will need to be repeated every couple of months in order to keep teeth looking cleaner, whiter and looking their best.
