Limited to just 9 major brands - Epson, HP, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, Xerox, Dell, Kodak, and Samsung - the selection of printer models here is small, too.
Not easy to search but good price available
To find your desired cartridge, type the model number in the search bar. Overstock Ink doesn't make it easy to search by printer model. You could browse the printer brand if you'd like; compared to their sister companies reviewed on our list, their selection is significantly smaller. As a result, they didn't have the cartridge for the Brother DCP-L2640DW that we sought. They did have the Canon ImageCLASS MF654Cdw "replacement" cartridges, which is another way of saying they are compatible (the product description explains that they're made by a third party). The 4-color pack of the cartridges sells here for $95.96. If you'd like, you can join the email list at Overstock Ink and get 10% off your first order. They don't sell the black cartridge on its own, so if you use more black toner, you'll need to shop elsewhere. While this was the best price for the product we found, their limited availability means you won't necessarily find your supplies here.

They are marketplace sellers on other retailers' websites, and we found a handful of 5-star ratings but no reviews of Overstock Ink on those sites. While this lack of online reviews isn't a red flag, it doesn't lead us to strongly recommend the company either.

Considering the popularity of these two printers, we were surprised.

Across other various online review sites, there are scattered reviews and rankings, ranging from 3.9 to 4.5 out of 5 stars, but these are all several years old and represent under 100 customers. One positive reviewer said, "I've been using TomatoInk products for years. They work just like the originals except for the cost." We're unsure why more people don't review this company, but we'd like to see more feedback to bring them up on our list. Yet their connection to their sister companies makes us a little more confident about their practices overall.

It's hard to know where to place TomatoInk on our list. They didn't have the cartridges we sought but their environmental focus made us want to shop with them (plus that cute tomato). Looking at the Brother DCP-L2640DW standard yield cartridges, 4inkjets sells house brand LD for $29.99 each, one of the better prices we've seen for this product. If you order 3 or more, they'll take off 99 cents on each. One nice thing about the cartridge listing is the chart below the description which says, "This item is guaranteed to work with the following printers" and then lists all of the printers: one more opportunity to make sure you've ordered the correct product. OEM cartridges for this printer are available for $63.99. When we checked the Canon ImageCLASS MF654Cdw compatible cartridge standard yield, it was offered in a set of 4, one of each color in their LD brand, for $149.96. Individual LD toner cartridges in any of the colors sell for $39.99, again discounted by 99 cents if you order 3 or more in the same color. The OEM single toner cartridge sells for $103.99 in the three colors, but not in black.

All returns must receive authorization from their customer service. You'll pay shipping costs if you're returning the product for a refund and they're nonrefundable.
Reputation is lukewarm
Claiming on their website to have earned "several" Bizrate Circle of Excellence awards for outstanding customer service, we checked the third-party site and verified they earned it in 2020. There were 9 recent reviews on the site giving between 6 and 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. Customers mentioned quick response, quality products, and great prices, though one customer complained about slow shipping. On the BBB, 4inkjets is unaccredited and has a "C" for not resolving 2 of the 39 complaints filed against the business. Customers complain that they didn't receive orders, had difficulty getting assistance with faulty products, and experienced bad customer service. They are listed as an alternate website for 123inkjets, whose BBB profile has an "A-" rating.

Multiple negative Yelp reviewers say they were charged for orders without receiving the product, giving them 2.1 stars out of 5 from nearly 200 people. Another hundred people on Trustpilot gave them 3.8 out of 5 stars. On the other end of the spectrum, Reseller Ratings has them rated 4.89 out of 5 stars from more than 3,800 customers, and their own website reviews show them with 5 stars from "verified buyers." The Reseller Ratings reviews are more than a year old, with many of the most recent giving only 1 star, which is concerning, plus the last time we reviewed this company, this rating was just 1 star overall, so this leap in ratings to 4.89 has us scratching our heads. We'd like to see more positive current feedback from their customers before we can move them up on our list.
Another downside
Boasting that their help center is "brimming with hundreds of informative articles," we looked to find out information to help us with our research. The tiny font was difficult to read, making learning more from 4inkjets a frustrating task.
Look at others first
While we appreciate the lower prices offered for some of the compatible cartridges at 4inkjets, the others aren't anything to brag about. Old and inconsistent reviews put them as a below-average option when shopping for toner cartridges online.
Subpar
Established in 1999, 123inkjets is located in California and claims to ship 99% of their orders the same day. They say their rigorous screening of manufacturers ensures proper product performance.
Lackluster website for browsing
One look at the 123inkjets website and you'll experience deja vu. If it looks like the 4inkjets website or Inkcartridges website, it's because the companies are linked, which we learned on their BBB listing. The same small font on their FAQs can also be found here, making for a frustrating experience getting information about your purchase. Though not said upfront, the LD brand items on 123inkjets are their own brand of cartridges here, too. Brother, Dell, HP, Canon, Lexmark, Epson, Xerox, and Samsung are some of the 23 cartridge brands sold here.
Tool makes searching easy but prices are higher
They make it easy to find your printer at 123inkjets with their "find your ink & toner" tool at the top of their page. Use the drop-down menus to choose printer brand, then family, and finally model. Comparing prices on our two printers was easy to do with this tool. First, the Brother DCP-L2640DW standard yield cartridges were available in either compatible (LD brand) for $35.99, $6 higher than offered at their related website 4inkjets, and higher than others on our list. The OEM cartridge for this printer sells for $64.83, just slightly higher than their other website. Next we looked at the standard yield cartridges for the Canon ImageCLASS MF654Cdw. The LD brand compatible cartridge 4-pack (1 in each color) is $157.96 (again, several dollars more than their related website). The single LD cartridge is available for $43.99 individually (saving 99 cents for buying 3 or more of a single color). For the OEM standard yield colors (no black), you'll pay $104.65 each, a slightly higher price than 4inkjets. Overall, their prices aren't anything to draw in customers.
Shipping can be free
To get free shipping to the contiguous US from 123inkjets, just place an order of $55 or more. Expedited shipping can be added, but you'll have to call for a price. Orders placed by noon PT or 2 p.m. or 4 p.m (each of these times are listed on the website as the deadline) will ship on the next business day.
Many ways to save
If you're wanting to save more, 123inkjets offers an email newsletter to give subscribers their coupons and promotions. The website banner lists the current deal. With a click you can apply it to your cart, which we prefer over remembering to do it at checkout.
Vague guarantee
Promising you'll love their products, 123inkjets offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee, saying you can return items for any reason if you don't. Their LD cartridges may be exchanged within a year of the purchase and have a lifetime guarantee - though details aren't clear on their website. OEM items and office supplies sold here must be returned within 30 days to be eligible for an exchange, and all returns must be authorized. They clearly state there's no restocking fee, which is something no one else on our list has done.
Reputation is confusing and reviews are old
On the BBB, 123inkjets is unaccredited and has an "A-" rating for failure to respond to 1 complaint, though they've only had a couple dozen in the past 3 years. Like their related company 4inkjets, 123inkjets boasts receiving Circle of Excellence awards from Bizrate. Yet, they only have one showing on the third-party's website. Plus, the reviews there are mixed and some of the glowing ones sound suspiciously like copy written by the company to tout their benefits.
No better with online review sites
Across online review platforms, Trustpilot has just over 50 reviews putting them at 3.9 out of 5 stars, despite more than half of the reviews being 1-star rants against the company's terrible refund policy, bad customer service, and compatibility issues. Another 50 reviews on Consumer Affairs resulted in a similar 3.5 rating. Surprisingly, on Reseller Ratings, there are over 2,100 reviews ranking 123inkjets 4.57 out of 5 stars. Most of the reviews are from 2020 or earlier, so we're not sure how much trust to place in them, especially since the one that was just a year old was a 1-star regarding compatibility issues that 123inkjets refused to resolve.
Not worth your time
The products found at 123inkjets are compatible cartridges that can be found cheaper at their sister website 4inkjets. They don't offer details about their guarantee or any benefits that make shopping online here for toner cartridges worth the time. We suggest looking at the other higher-ranked options on our list instead.
Weak
Since 2000, California-based 1ink says they've grown to be "the single most trusted online destination" for ink and toner cartridges. They maintain that their focus on establishing customer relationships is the key to their success.
Limited selection of devices supported here
Boasting "green and proud," 1ink works with second parties to collect cartridges that'd otherwise be trashed in a landfill and remanufacture them. In doing this, they reduce their carbon footprint. From the wording on their website, it's unclear if they are the ones remanufacturing or simply a distributor, but they also sell compatible toner cartridges. While they say they sell "virtually every brand," the website only lists HP, Brother, Canon, Epson, Lexmark, Dell, Samsung, and 9 other makers. That's significantly lower than some of the more highly-rated retailers on our list.
Priced higher than most toner cartridge retailers on our list
It's easy to get started at 1ink. Use their quick ink finder to search for your printer brand, series, and model. When we priced the Brother DCP-L2640DW standard yield cartridges we checked out at all retailers on our list, 1ink sold single cartridges for $38.99 each, with a $6 discount on each one if you buy 8 at a time. If you just want a 2-pack, you'll save a little over the individual purchase price because it sells for $74.99. Plus, we found that 1ink offered a special 5-pack, which was 4 toner cartridges and a drum, for $155.99. They boast that these products are easy to install, economical, and guaranteed to be compatible since all cartridges undergo stringent testing. A single Canon ImageCLASS MF654Cdw compatible cartridge standard yield in black, yellow, cyan, or magenta is available for $49.99, while a 4-pack with one of each color can be purchased for $189.99. Their prices aren't the best, making us wonder what would bring someone to shop here.
Order total higher for free shipping
All 1ink orders over $65 get free shipping to the contiguous United States, while smaller orders will incur a $5.95 shipping rate. These are the highest free shipping threshold and flat rate on our list. They have expedited shipping through UPS but you'll have to call to request a price quote.
Look for the deal of the day
To save money on your 1ink purchase, sign up for their email newsletter. They'll send you coupons for the best deals. Also, check their website for the "deal of the day" coupon.
Guarantee is one of the best...
With a generous 180-day product guarantee, 1ink wants to help you feel confident about purchasing from them. If you need to make a return within the first 30 days of purchase, they'll give a refund, replacement, or store credit minus shipping costs. If your product is defective after the 30 days and up to 90 days, they offer the same deal, allowing you to use the cartridge for a few months without worry. But don't worry about defects after 90 days - 1ink stands behind their products and will replace or offer store credit for them. For non-defective products in unopened condition, you can return them for up to 180 days for store credit. Make sure to contact their customer service support team to get authorization prior to making a return.
...But not the best reputation
While their product guarantee may sound great, 1ink's reputation isn't. They're unaccredited by the BBB and have a dismal "F" rating for failure to respond to complaints. While it's only a dozen of them and they're months or years old, the fact that they're unresponsive to customer complaints is worrisome. Add to this the terrible limited reviews scattered across third-party review sites online including Trustpilot and Yelp, with 1.7 to 2.1 stars out of 5. Bad experiences included poor quality toner cartridges that didn't work with no refund offered, incorrect cartridges, bad printing experiences, and rude customer service reps. On their own website, they post "verified" customer testimonials from over 7,800 customers who give them 4.8 out of 5 stars, though a majority of them are at least a few years old. This is a sharp decline from the last time we reviewed them. We'd need to see more positive, current reviews before we'd check out this company for toner cartridges.
Not a good choice
Though they have a good guarantee for their products, 1ink falls short with their higher prices and reputation issues. Despite their claims of being a most-trusted provider, take the advice of current reviewers and avoid 1ink for your online toner cartridge purchases.
Poor
California-based Inkcartridges was started in 1999 to provide an alternative to overpriced printer supplies in big box stores. They are one of several websites which sell LD Products' compatible toner cartridges.
Familiar website with good selection of brands
With toner cartridges from 23 major printer brands including Epson, HP, Brother, Canon, and Dell, Inkcartridges offers their branded LD cartridges, as well as remanufactured and OEM products. The website is eerily familiar if you've looked at some of the others on our list, and that's because they're a related company of 123inkjets and 4inkjets. Like the related websites, the Help Center answers for Inkcartridges are in a very small font. There are spots on the website which say "Image coming soon," making the website feel incomplete.
Easy to search but higher prices
When you want to check out the stock at Inkcartridges, go to the "Find your ink & toner fast" tool on the top of the page. The drop-down menus will prompt you to select your printer's brand, family, and model before taking you to the product page. Though their home page says they have cheaper ink, we found that compared to the other related websites selling the LD cartridges, the compatible and OEM cartridges here are the highest priced of the three - as well as most of the other retailers on our list. Their compatible standard yield cartridge for the Brother DCP-L2640DW is $35.99 (save 99 cents on each if you order 3 or more). The OEM cartridge sells for $64.99. The prices on the compatible standard yield cartridges for the Canon ImageCLASS MF654Cdw were similar to those at 123inkjets, with a 4-pack of all colors being $157.96, and individual color cartridges for $43.99 each. Like the other sites, you can only get the OEMs in the 3 colors, not in black, for standard yield, and they're the highest of the related companies at $104.99. Overall, there's nothing special about the pricing at Inkcartridges to make us consider them for our toner needs.

Saying customers should be able to stock up on cartridges and save, Inkcartridges guarantees their LD remanufactured and compatible toner products for a lifetime. If you open it and it doesn't work, they'll make it right by returning or replacing the cartridge. Just contact their customer service to get authorization. Within the first year, you can get a full refund, and after that, they'll offer store credit. OEM return policy is strict, with just 15 days to get a refund (minus shipping costs) or up to 30 days for a store credit. Plus, they don't charge a restock fee on returns, which is nice.
Confusing reputation
Like their related companies, Inkcartridges claims award-winning customer service from Bizrate, though the last time was in 2020. One negative reviewer mentioned experiencing cartridge failure during important printing projects, adding, "I will reconsider whether or not I will purchase ink from you." Though they have under 100 reviews on Trustpilot, they have a 4.3 out of 5 stars. Reviewers are happy with the service and product, despite complaints of cartridges failing while printing and receiving partial orders. On Reseller Ratings, the company has nearly 3,000 reviews giving them 4.66 out of stars. While a majority of reviews were happy according to the overall ratings, what we viewed were complaints about "horrible" experiences, delayed shipping, uneven service, and wrong cartridges being received. Plus the majority of these reviews were more than 5 years old. We're not sure how that results in such a high score, but we're wary of the validity of that reputation and can't recommend this company at all. While their company isn't listed separately on the BBB, they're linked to both 123inkjets with its "A-" rating, and LD Products, Inc., which has an "F" rating.
Avoid this company
Inkcartridges has free shipping on all of their orders, but that's because they charge more for their toner cartridges. We can't recommend them at all and suggest you look at the higher-ranked suppliers on our list when shopping online for your toner cartridges.
