LegalZoom was created to make legal help more accessible and affordable to all Americans, not just those who could pay the steep fees of a local attorney. Originally starting with estate planning, business formation and intellectual property services, this company has grown over the last 20 years to include a broad range of topics and nearly 4 million customers.

LegalZoom's Trademark Registration process is simple and streamlined. Start by filling out their easy online questionnaire, and send them an image of your business logo (if you have one). There's no extra charge for asking them to do a logo search, unlike some of the companies we reviewed.

Next, LegalZoom will conduct a search to determine if there are any conflicts with other existing trademarks. If there's no conflict and you decide to continue with your application, you'll use LegalZoom's software, LegalZip, to create your trademark paperwork. When that's finished, you'll get a copy emailed to you for your electronic signature. Once that's signed, LegalZoom will file your application and any applicable supporting materials to the USPTO; you'll receive a serial number and confirmation in your email.

Finally, the USPTO reviews your application and determines if your trademark is eligible for registration. If so, congratulations: your trademark has been approved for registration, and you'll receive a certificate or Notice of Allowance from the USPTO within 12 weeks of publication.

• Basic ($199) - you'll get a basic trademark search plus a discount if you opt for a more comprehensive search, "Peace of Mind" review that looks at your logo images for quality, email delivery of your application, and filing your completed application with the USPTO
• Complete ($219) - for just $20 more, you'll get everything in the Basic package plus a Cease and Desist Letter package, a Trademark Assignment Agreement (if you need to transfer rights/ownership sometime in the future), an electronic copy of your application, and a 30-day free trial of LegalZoom's Business Advisory Plan.

• WorldScan International Search ($499) - everything from the previous package, plus a search of pending and registered international trademarks in Canada, the UK, the European Community, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
