Started as a "vision for justice,” Rocket Lawyer is a site that aims to make legal help available to more people through the use of digital tools and an online platform. Founded in 2008, Rocket Lawyer has served over 30 million people with the creation and signing of legal documents, affordable attorney advice, and assistance with business-related legal concerns. Trademark registration is one of many services you can find on Rocket Lawyer. However, unlike some sites, the focus at Rocket Lawyer is on documents rather than completing the process for you, so it's a little more hands-on than some companies in our review.
Fill out a quick form to start
To get started, you'll need to fill out your name, email, and phone number. After that, you'll be shown different packages for your trademark registration monthly subscription. Committing to a subscription gives you access to documents on the Rocket Lawyer platform and includes online signing, legal questions answered by a lawyer, and access to all documents outside of trademark registration too. To make any kind of purchase, you'll need to create an account with an email and password, and then you're all set.
Two monthly subscriptions to choose from
Rocket Lawyer works on a subscription plan rather than offering one-off documents for you to fill out. You can choose between RocketLegal and RocketLegal+. Here are the main differences:
The main difference is that if you choose RocketLegal (standard), you'll have to pay full price for filing your trademark. If you choose RocketLegal+, you can pay half the cost for Rocket Lawyer to file for you.
Pricing around $699 for just trademark
The pricing is charged monthly for the RocketLegal subscription and annually for RocketLegal+. There is also an additional cost for trademark registration aside from the membership fee. Currently, the trademark registration cost is $699 at RocketLegal, and you can't access it without getting a monthly (or annual) membership. There is a 7-day free trial, so you could get your registration filed for free within that time frame, but there's no guarantee you won't have to pay the subscription costs if things take longer than expected. This is what you can expect to pay for your subscription:
At the time of our review, there was a sale on RocketLegal+ for half-off. This made the annual fee $239.88 instead, which combined with the half-off price for trademark registration brought the total to $589.87 (for the membership and the trademark registration). In comparison, the RocketLegal standard would cost $699 for the trademark registration plus the monthly $39.99 for a total purchase of $738.99 at the time of purchase.
Lower costs if you can do it yourself
Now, if you don't want to commit to having Rocket Lawyer do the filing for you, you can avoid the high $699 fee and just pay the monthly cost of $39.99. This gives you access to the trademark assignment documents only. You fill out the document yourself and have no extra costs except for filing with the USPTO. However, this doesn't offer you a lot of the security of letting Rocket Lawyer submit the filing on your behalf, so you'll need to be more comfortable with a little legal DIY.
Additional documents as needed
There are other documents related to the trademark registration that you might want to check out too. Rocket Lawyer offers a trademark violation letter, trademark license agreement, and trademark application worksheet to help you with your other trademark-related needs. With your subscription, these are all free to use and fill out.
Guaranteed to be legally binding in the US
While Rocket Legal doesn't have a satisfaction guarantee listed, the company does guarantee that all documents you fill out correctly are legally binding and permissible in any court of law in the United States. Since your final result is determined by the USPTO, this is a standard guarantee for trademark registration.
High praise for documents and speed
Rocket Lawyer has an impressive reputation from trusted third-party review sites. The company holds an "A+” rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau as well as a 4.5-star average rating from the BBB. On Trustpilot, Rocket Lawyer has a solid 4.7-star rating. Business owners who used Rocket Lawyer praised the ease of use and the ability to get a lot of documents completed for free by taking advantage of the 7-day free trial. The documents are easy to fill out and require very little legwork for most users. The only complaints are that for those with more financial constraints, paying for the services at Rocket Lawyer can stretch the budget significantly if you can't get your documents completed within the 7-day trial.
Perfect if you want a quick doc for free
Rocket Lawyer is a great option, but it is pricey. If you want to go the less expensive route, you'll need to be comfortable with legal jargon and filling out your own paperwork. While the site makes this fairly easy to do, some customers who were brand-new to the process felt like the 7-day free trial wasn't enough time to get things done. Plus, if you want a hands-off process, you'll be looking at a minimum of $589.87 and possibly more if you don't catch Rocket Lawyer doing a promo period. While the company is a great site for a quick document or two, as a complete trademark registration service it falls a bit behind due to higher costs.
Are you getting started with a new business or planning a rebrand? Registering for a trademark is one of the most important steps in protecting your money-making venture. Registering for a trademark protects your intellectual property and grants you exclusive rights to the name within your industry. So, if you're the first one to think of Airbnb, for example, then that name can be trademarked within the hospitality industry.
There are plenty of things you can trademark too, not just your business name. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), a trademark is defined as a "word, phrase, symbol, and/or design that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.” There are trademarks out there for slogans, logos, company designs, words, phrases, and sounds.
Brand names are some of the most popular trademarks, but there are plenty of ways to protect your property depending on what you're most worried about. And, you don't need to be working on a new company to trademark. If you've been in business for years and want to stand out from the pack, you can trademark your existing logo or brand slogan any time.
If you're thinking this sounds very in-depth, don't worry. The process is pretty simple. A trademark application is just a matter of doing research, filling out the forms, and submitting it to the USPTO. The hard part is waiting. Some trademarks can take six months (or more) to go through the review process. And, there are some pitfalls with applications that can be stressful.
For example, researching to figure out if your chosen business name is in use (or something too similar) can be a time-consuming and frustrating step. Since any marks or slogans that are too similar to existing trademarks will be rejected, you don't want to skip the research. If the USPTO rejects your application, you'll lose the fee you paid to apply. On the bright side, if you find an online trademark registration service, they'll do the work for you, and you don't have to stress at all.
Online trademark registration services can help you or your business protect your intellectual property without all the worry. These services offer faster and more convenient application processes that keep you from running into the pitfalls of applying directly through the USPTO yourself. Services for registering a trademark offer higher success rates, since getting your trademark is not guaranteed. A good trademark registration company will support you through the process. Many online trademark registration companies offer guarantees that ensure you get your trademark or get your money back.
If you're ready to jump into your trademark registration but don't know where to start, we've got you. Here are a few factors that can help you narrow the field as you choose the best online trademark registration company to get your logo, slogan, or design mark protected:
