People of all ages can benefit from the one-on-one help from a tutor. Whether you're a parent going back to college to earn your degree or your child needs help with certain areas of school, tutoring is a fantastic option. The benefit of having individualized instruction to thoroughly explain challenging topics can make all the difference in learning.
We all learn a bit differently and sometimes we may need some extra help in certain subjects. A high school student may be great at math, but have a hard time following the way their teacher explains concepts. Finding a tutor to match your learning style and slowly explain a subject in a way that is easy to understand will help you keep good grades and continue adding to your knowledge.

Wyzant is a tutoring marketplace co-founded by two Princeton graduates in 2005. Their platform allows students to view available tutors and select who they want based on their credentials. Wyzant advertises that their tutors can help students with "any subject". A short list of these include algebra, chemistry, Spanish, English, accounting, coding, test prep, guitar, and study skills. They have been featured by The New York Times, CNBC, CNN CBS News, Chicago Tribune, Fox News, and Forbes.
Narrow Down Your Tutor Search
When identifying available tutors, customers are asked very specific questions to narrow down the search. You'll first select the subject you need help with, your time zone, what days of the week and times you're looking for tutoring to take place, and how soon you need a tutor.
Browse Your Available Tutors
With the information provided, Wyzant then shows a browsable list of tutors who match your criteria. You basically get to "hire" whoever looks like they will be the best fit for you based off of their photo, bio, hourly rate, student ratings, education, subjects they teach, and scheduling. You're shown how many hours of tutoring they've done so far, so you know they are experienced with the Wyzant platform and policies. Their profile shows how soon they typically respond, giving you an idea of when to expect communication back from them if you choose to reach out.
Meet With Tutors Online Or Face-to-face
Students can check out the online tool demo room to get comfortable with all of the service's features before heading into their first lesson. With Wyzant's platform you can upload documents, use the whiteboard, share your screen, video chat, and more. Wyzant also gives students the opportunity to meet with tutors in-person. There are thousands of local tutors willing to come to students' homes or meet at a nearby public place to go over subject material face-to-face.
Good Fit Guarantee
The cost for tutors is dependent on the tutor's hourly rate. Most range from $30 - $70/hour, but that mostly depends on the tutor's background, area of expertise, and availability. You can filter tutors by their hourly rate as well as their age, gender, if they have completed a background check, and availability. Wyzant has a "Good Fit Guarantee" that ensures if you don't love your first lesson with a tutor, your session is free.
Great Student Experiences
Wyzant has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). There are over a thousand reviews from students who have had great experiences using Wyzant, saying they were quickly matched with a tutor, received excellent service, and improved grades and test scores. It's not uncommon to read a comment from a student saying that they believe Wyzant is the best tutoring platform out there.
We agree that this is a fantastic option for students to take control of their educational experience. For all the reasons outlined above, wegive Wyzant our highest rating for tutoring services.
TutorMe was founded in 2015. The idea behind the company is that there are more teachers in the world than are actually teaching and they want to give students an opportunity to learn from them. Some of the tutors who work for TutorMe come from places like Berkeley, USC, MIT, Princeton, Yale, and others. They can tutor students in over 300 subjects and even help with things like learning to code.
3 Step Process
TutorMe can be understood in a simple three-step process:
Tutor Review Process
We really like that TutorMe has a review process for their tutors because it adds reassurance that the company maintains an awareness of how well their tutors perform. This shows that TutorMe stands behind their services and wants their students to have the best possible educational experience.
Browse The Tutor Profiles
Once you select the subject for which you need a tutor, you have the choice of choosing if you prefer a male or female (or have no preference) and then browsing the profiles of the online tutors. Each profile shows a photo, a short bio, teaching experience, work experience, education, and the subjects they tutor in. Students can then request to start a lesson right away with any tutor they see online.
To get a feel for how TutorMe works, the tutoring platform and the quality of tutors, we recommend taking advantage of their free trial. They also have a helpful demo feature to explore the virtual classroom.
4 Pricing Options
To use TutorMe after your free trial is up, there are 4 pricing options you can choose from:
Good Customer Reviews
TutorMe has a B+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) because of some past complaints about experiences with their company. However, at the time of this review, there were 95 customer reviews on their BBB profile and an overall 4.5/5 star rating. Students report that the tutors were of high caliber, always helpful, and good at explaining concepts. Not only do students say they like the tutors here, but tutors also say that they love working for TutorMe and that the platform is easy to use.
One Of The Best
Outside of the Better Business Bureau, hundreds of other student comments can be found about TutorMe that say it's the best site to learn on, the tutors provide all that you need, they keep high standards, and offer complete flexibility for students. Because we are so impressed with the simplicity of TutorMe and the ability to choose your own tutor, as well as leave reviews on them, this service has earned one of our highest ratings.
Varsity Tutors was started by Chuck Cohn, who used a tutor to pass his geometry class in high school. He went on to college and struggled to find a tutor to help with his courses, so he had the idea to create a service that matches students of all ages to high-quality tutors. They have been featured by CBS, FOX, USA Today, Time, U.S. News, and others. Many of their tutors come from educational backgrounds including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton and other top schools.
Start With A Phone Call
Finding a tutor through Varsity Tutors usually starts with a phone call. You can provide your name, email, phone number, and zip code online, but it could take up to 24 hours for them to contact you. Instead, they prefer that you call them, get matched with a tutor, meet at an agreed-upon location (i.e. in-home or at the library) or online. Students can access the Varsity Tutors platform online from their computer or a mobile app. These sessions may be recorded for later viewing in case you need a refresher on something you learned.
Great Online Learning Platform
Varsity Tutors has one of the best online learning platforms we have seen. You can view a video on Varsity Tutors' website explaining how the platform works and see all the features in action. Students will be able to chat face-to-face with the tutors while accessing a chat feature, drawing on a whiteboard, uploading documents, taking practice quizzes, and much more.
More Expensive Than Most
Students can get help with a variety of school subjects as well as test prep for the GMAT, LSAT, GRE, MCAT, SAT and more. There are tutors to help with language learning, writing skills, grammar, and reading. Getting help with any of these subjects comes at a fairly hefty price through Varsity Tutors. Costs are dependent on how often a student gets tutored and the tutor's hourly rate, but you can expect to pay around $70 - $95/hour.
100% Tutor Satisfaction Guarantee
Varsity Tutors is backed by a 100% tutor satisfaction guarantee. This means that if you're unsatisfied with the tutor you're working with, you can contact Varsity Tutors, explain the situation and get matched with a new tutor. The next session you have will be free for up to two hours.
Highly Satisfied Students
Thousands of students and parents alike are highly satisfied with their experience at Varsity Tutors. They report that test scores improved, they felt they were matched with the right tutors, the tools built into the learning environment were robust, and the sessions were flexible and dependable. Students as young as just a few years old can benefit from Varsity Tutors. If you are able to afford the higher-than-average tutoring costs here, this is a top-notch option for tutoring.
Sylvan Learning Center has been providing learning resources for students for over 40 years. The company consists of franchised and corporate learning centers to help students with homework support, study skills, reading, writing, math, test prep, and much more. Sylvan primarily serves K-12 students, but also helps with college and career readiness, STEM programs, and test prep.
Historically In-person, Recent Move To Online
Sylvan has historically only provided in-person tutoring at one of their over 750 locations. However, due to the effects of COVID-19, Sylvan implemented an online tutoring service for students to learn remotely. This really opened up opportunities for students who don't live very close to one of the physical Sylvan locations. Tutors video chat with the students and tutor just like they would face-to-face.
Locations Easy To Find
It is easy to find Sylvan Learning locations on their website. You can simply type in your zip code or search by state. In addition to having facilities all throughout the US, they also have locations in Canada and other international areas like Bahrain, Guam, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and more. Sylvan Learning Center has one of the biggest reaches to help students over every other independent tutoring company we have found.
Pricing Varies Based On Where You Live
The cost of tutoring services (K-12) at Sylvan starts at $49/hour. If you want academic coaching (grades K-8), monthly packages for one-hour sessions start at $199/month. Since Sylvan Learning Centers are locally owned and operated, pricing could vary a bit based on location. This makes sense, but it would be nice if you could get a clearer picture of how much you'll be paying without having to call or visit the location nearest you. They do say that they can develop payment plans and work with the budget of families on a case-by-case basis.
Sylvan guarantees a few things with their tutoring program. These include:
However, the guarantee only applies to participating locations and for students who complete at least 4 hours per week and a total of at least 50 hours of instruction within 14 weeks. You'll want to ask your local Sylvan center about their guarantee to make sure you know the details before getting started.
Positive Feedback, But Failing Grade
It is surprising that Sylvan Learning, Inc. has an F rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). It's unclear exactly why this is the case, but we did find hundreds of parents giving extremely positive feedback about the experiences their children have had at local Sylvan Learning Centers around the United States. Most said that their children were very successful after having tutoring through Sylvan and that their scores and comprehension improved.
Overall Good Choice
Overall, we are disappointed by Sylvan Learning Center's low rating from the BBB and lack of straightforward pricing plans. However, our confidence has been boosted after reading so many success stories from parents around the world who say Sylvan helped get their kid back on track academically. With numerous physical locations as well as online tutoring, most people will have a way to get help from Sylvan. We recommend reading reviews and getting to know the tutors at your local Sylvan Learning Center and moving forward if you feel confident in the cost and quality of tutoring they have to offer.
School Tutoring Academy provides tutoring services throughout the United States as well as many areas of Canada. Their programs are for students from preschool all the way through college. Students can also get help studying for tests like the PSAT, ACT, and SAT.
Trial Assessment Required
To begin using their services, a trial assessment with School Tutoring Academy is required, which identifies a student's strengths and weaknesses to get an overall idea of their learning level.
Broad List Of Tutoring Subjects
School Tutoring Academy offers tutoring for students of all grade levels. The broad list of subjects and programs available for students include:
What It Looks Like
There is no physical facility that School Tutoring Academy works out of with tutors. Rather, tutors will either come to your home or assist online, depending on the method that best fits your learning style. In-home tutors live in your local area and are chosen based on the assessment that a student is required to take. This helps them identify the best tutor for the student. A video on School Tutoring Academy's website shows what their online teaching platform looks like, which is a robust chat system and whiteboard to view reading material, see math concepts broken down, or video chat with the tutor.
Many of the tutors at School Tutoring Academy scored in the 90th percentile or higher on standardized tests. They are all college graduates, many with degrees from top schools. Their credentials qualify them to coach students in a way that surpasses what you will typically find in your local neighborhood. In addition to a top-notch tutor, students are also paired with an academic director that creates their comprehensive learning plan. With lessons come progress reports, so that students and parents can see improvements.
Pricing Requires A Personalized Quote
The price of tutoring is a bit unclear because you'll need to get a personalized quote. To do this, School Tutoring Academy provides a phone number for you to call and discuss your tutoring needs. They advertise that their "flagship" tutoring program is twice a week and comes out to about $25/hour or $199/month.
We wish that School Tutoring Academy was more transparent with their pricing. It makes us concerned that people pay all sorts of different prices based on their skill levels, when most competing tutoring companies just have everyone pay the same price regardless of subject or assessment scores.
See If It Fits
School Tutoring Academy has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, but there isn't much feedback outside of their website from parents and students about their experience here. The lack of straightforward pricing and potential for a lack of in-home tutors are our main concerns. However, we really like that School Tutoring Academy works for students from preschool through college with many areas of focus, test prep, and learning impairments. This isn't our first choice for tutors, but if they have a program that fits the needs of you or your family, it may be worth taking the assessment and talking with one of their directors for more information.
Tutor is an online-based platform for students 4th - 12th grade, in college, and other educational institutions to be connected to tutors 24/7. They have tutors that can help with over 200 different subjects as well as test preparation. Tutor acquired the Princeton Review in 2014 and redirects to their website whenever you click on anything related to tutoring. It doesn't make sense for them to have two websites when everything is through the Princeton Review.
Information Is Vague And Lacking
Tutor has one of the more outdated-looking websites we have seen compared to the competition. Our guess is that they don't put much effort into it since it isn't the primary source of information or features. The Princeton Review has a much more comprehensive website, but their information about finding a tutor is vague and lacking. There is no information about the cost of a tutor here. To use their services, you'll need to fill out an online form with your first and last name, email, school, state, and phone number.
Over 3,000 Tutors Available
Tutor says they are very picky about the tutors they hire. Every year they receive over 100,000 applications, but after rigorous testing and vetting, only 1.5% of tutors end up being qualified for the job. There are over 3,000 tutors available to connect with students on test prep and homework help. They have bilingual tutoring (English and Spanish) available for math, science, and social studies.
Sparse Customer Feedback
The Better Business Bureau gives both Tutor and The Princeton Review an A- rating.
There are very few student reviews about Tutor, and from what we can tell it is one of the lesser-used tutoring services. One review mentioned that they can almost never get a tutor the same day, and when they finally do, the quality of the tutoring is lacking.
Frustrating And Fruitless
It felt like pulling teeth to understand how to get a tutor from Tutor/The Princeton Review. The only semi-helpful thing was being able to view the virtual classroom to see how the whiteboard, calculator, chat, and other features work. We have no idea what the cost is here, how often you can use a tutor once they are paid for, the notice you need to give in order to use a tutor, or many other important details.
We know there are better tutoring services out there that offer transparent information and make it simple to get help with your studies. To save you from the confusion of dealing with Tutor and/or the Princeton Review, we recommend just going elsewhere to find a tutor.
Chegg was started in 2002. In addition to providing tutoring, they have a textbook rental service and test prep materials. The subjects taught by tutors at Chegg include accounting, algebra, biology, calculus, chemistry, economics, finance, physics, and statistics. All of them are at a high school or college level. Students have the option of doing a one-time tutoring session or paying monthly for unlimited lessons.
Hundreds Of Topics To Choose From
When you get to Chegg's tutoring page, you can choose from hundreds of topics that you need assistance with. From there you let Chegg know if you need assistance right away or sometime later in the day. Tutors are available 24/7, so you can use their help whenever you need it and for any frame of time.
Pay-per-lesson Or Pay-per-month
The cost of a tutor at Chegg depends on whether you need short-term or long-term help. If you want to pay per lesson and just hire a tutor periodically when you need one, the cost is $10.95/lesson. If you want access to a tutor at any time, you can pay $19.95/month for unlimited lessons. Both of these options only allow students to get help through the chat feature. For $30/month, students get to use a virtual whiteboard, but only for 60 minutes/month.
Chegg's tutoring plans seem like a lose-lose for students. Using a chat feature to try and understand how to do a math equation or figure out your physics homework sounds difficult. For the best learning experience, the virtual whiteboard seems necessary. However, if you opt for the plan that includes the virtual whiteboard, you only get 60 minutes/month, which likely won't always be enough. It's unfortunate that Chegg doesn't have better online options for students.
No Detailed Refund Policy
On one page of Chegg's tutoring website, it mentions that if you aren't satisfied with your online tutoring, you can get your money back. Unfortunately, this is something you'd have to reach out to their customer service about since there are no additional details about it in their policies.
Victim Of A Data Breach
There is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) alert to tell people that Chegg was a victim of a data breach that included names, email addresses, and shipping addresses. Luckily no financial information like bank account information, social security numbers, or credit card information was breached.
We were surprised that Chegg has an A+ rating from the BBB since they have over a hundred negative reviews on their profile, and a rating average that is barely over 1-star. Other third-party sites have bad ratings for Chegg, with over a thousand customers complaining mostly about issues with Chegg's textbook services. A few people mentioned that they felt like Chegg provided more answers than explanations during tutoring sessions, and some tutors were simply unhelpful.
Potential Is There, But Plans Are Limited
Chegg has the potential to be a helpful learning resource for students. To have a place to go for tutoring, textbooks, and test prep sounds great. Unfortunately, we don't recommend going through Chegg for tutoring since they don't have much positive feedback and their pricing options limit students who want unlimited help with a virtual whiteboard. There are better tutoring services than Chegg, so we recommend going there instead.
You can find a tutor to help with just about every subject out there. Most commonly, people hire tutors to help with math, literacy, English, or science-based subjects like biology or chemistry. Regardless of the subject, tutoring can be done online or in-person depending on the tutoring company you go with.
