People of all ages can benefit from the one-on-one help from a tutor. Whether you're a parent going back to college to earn your degree or your child needs help with certain areas of school, tutoring is a fantastic option. The benefit of having individualized instruction to thoroughly explain challenging topics can make all the difference in learning.
We all learn a bit differently and sometimes we may need some extra help in certain subjects. A high school student may be great at math, but have a hard time following the way their teacher explains concepts. Finding a tutor to match your learning style and slowly explain a subject in a way that is easy to understand will help you keep good grades and continue adding to your knowledge.

Wyzant is a marketplace where students can set criteria and browse available tutors to work with either online or in-person. With an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, the ability to choose your own tutor from over 65,000 candidates, and a wide range of tutoring prices, you can't go wrong with Wyzant. This company earns our highest rating for tutoring services.
TutorMe is a great online tutoring resource for all grade levels that allows students to read about available tutors and select the person they want to work with. You can either pay monthly or just pay as you go. TutorMe is well-liked by students and has highly qualified tutors in over 300 subjects available 24/7. TutorMe lets you demo their virtual classroom as well as do a free trial before signing up. We are impressed with what they have to offer and highly recommend using their tutoring services.
Varsity Tutors could be described as a high-end tutoring service. Highly-trained tutors are available to teach students in-person locally or online. Students of all ages can obtain help with just about every school subject under the sun as well as test prep and language learning. This is one of the most expensive options you'll find when looking for a tutor, but it is one of the best learning environments thanks to Varsity Tutors' award-winning learning platform, highly educated tutors, and professional processes.
Sylvan Learning has been expanding educational opportunities for K-12 students for over 40 years. They have over 750 physical locations throughout the US, Canada, and other countries as well as online tutoring. Although they have a low rating from the Better Business Bureau, parents have great things to say about the results and their in-person and online tutoring opens up possibilities for kids no matter their location.
School Tutoring Academy serves students from preschool through college. Whether you're needing help with a subject at school, studying for a test, or reviewing all your homework, tutors to fit your needs can be found here. Students can choose an online learning environment or be matched with a local tutor to come to their home. Students are required to take a learning assessment before getting started at School Tutoring Academy, which also gives an overview of your custom pricing. We wish costs were more transparent here and that more parents and students had left feedback about their experiences, but overall School Tutoring Academy has a lot to offer.
Tutor acquired the test prep and tutoring site, The Princeton Review, in 2014. Tutor's website now redirects to The Princeton Review for all things tutoring. Unfortunately, unless you fill out an online contact form, you'll barely get any information about how the online tutoring works here including cost or frequency. It's very hard to understand what the process is at Tutor, so we recommend skipping over this site and saving your time by using a higher-ranked tutoring service.
Chegg is well-known among the student community for their textbook rental services. Unfortunately, their reputation is not a good one and over the years they have built an unhappy base of (ex) customers. Their tutoring services have potential, but don't allow for much flexibility to help students with different learning styles. Chegg requires you to either pay monthly and not have access to a virtual whiteboard or to pay monthly to use this, but only get 60 minutes per month. Based on their poor reputation and limited tutoring options, we recommend using a higher-rated tutoring service.
You can find a tutor to help with just about every subject out there. Most commonly, people hire tutors to help with math, literacy, English, or science-based subjects like biology or chemistry. Regardless of the subject, tutoring can be done online or in-person depending on the tutoring company you go with.
Before hiring a tutor for yourself or for your child, there are a few things we recommend you keep in mind:
