  • Quick answers within 10-15 minutes
  • Online tools for teaching yourself
  • "A+” rating from the BBB

Chegg is considered one of the go-to spots for college students when they need to buy discounted textbooks. What you may not know is that Chegg also offers tutoring services.

Designed by students for students

In 2005, Chegg was founded by Iowa State University students, Aayush Phumbhra and Osman Rashid, as an affordable textbook rental company for college students. As the company began to grow, Chegg expanded its services and introduced the eReader, making eTextbooks more accessible to students, providing more cost-effective options, and helping students have access to their books anywhere, anytime. Then, in 2014, Chegg took a step further by launching Chegg Tutors, an on-demand online tutoring service available 24/7 for high school and college students in various subjects.

One-time session or monthly subscription

With 24/7 sessions available, Chegg can help students at any time. However, some users have complained about a lack of live chat, so communication may only be via email. Their roster of tutors covers a wide range of subjects, including accounting, algebra, biology, calculus, chemistry, economics, finance, physics, and statistics, all tailored to high school and college-level students. The platform grants students the flexibility to choose between one-time tutoring sessions or monthly subscriptions for unlimited access to lessons.

Navigating the site is a little confusing

Navigating Chegg's tutoring page opens up a vast selection of topics, providing the convenience of immediate or scheduled assistance, as tutors are available 24/7. You can choose from homework help, exam prep, help to understand a topic, and writing citations as topics for your tutoring sessions. However, none of these selections specifically say tutoring, which makes it a little hard to know if you're moving toward finding a tutoring session or if you're just looking for online resources. We'd love a little more clarity from Chegg on what exactly they're offering for learning solutions.

Best for short-term help or one-off questions

Generally speaking, it was a little hard to figure out how their tutoring works. They have different options, like Math Solver, but it's not clear how the lessons go. Do they tell the tutors how to teach? Each session is different, depending on the student and tutor, and most customers agree that Chegg is better for quick questions that you need answered within 10 to 15 minutes. We looked into it, and not many students or parents think it's a good idea to use Chegg for long-term learning or in-depth help.

Variety of pricing options

When you sign up for Chegg's services, you'll get a cool bonus of free help for the first 30 minutes, which you can use within the first 7 days of signing up. Plus, if you purchase the subscription on Chegg, you can also snag a free Dashpass Student membership on DoorDash. In terms of the cost after your free pass, there are a few different plans to choose from:

  • 40 cents per minute prepaid plan
  • 75 cents per minute on the pay-as-you-go plan
  • $48 for 120 minutes for a weekly plan
  • $30 per hour on the monthly plan
  • $96 for 240 minutes on the monthly plan

Tons of learning tools

One of the benefits of Chegg is its wide variety of learning tools. You can watch helpful videos that explain tricky stuff, or if you're stuck on math problems, Chegg Math Solver is there to rescue you, and you can even snap a picture of the problem and get help. Need to check your writing for mistakes? Chegg Writing has your back, checking for grammar and making sure your work is original. Plus, you can make digital flashcards right on the site to help you study for those big exams. Chegg is a great service if you want asynchronous assistance, but it does feel a little DIY - if you want live, one-on-one guidance, you may want to check out another tutor platform.

Tutoring isn't top-tier according to reviews

Despite being accredited with an "A+” rating by the BBB, Chegg has garnered a multitude of negative reviews on various platforms, averaging just over one star. Many customers have grievances related to their textbook service, but other users have also voiced concerns over the tutoring sessions, citing a lack of sufficient explanations and unhelpful tutors. On top of that Chegg has been a victim of a data breach, prompting the release of an alert by the Better Business Bureau. While sensitive information like bank details, social security numbers, and credit card information remained unharmed, names, email addresses, and shipping addresses were compromised.

Best used for quick solutions only

Though Chegg possesses the potential to be a valuable learning resource, offering tutoring, textbook services, and test preparation, the confusing payment plans and negative feedback make it a less preferable option for students seeking robust academic support. In our opinion, Chegg is great for getting homework help, but it might not be the best for long-term tutoring. With better alternatives available in the tutoring sphere, exploring alternative platforms would likely yield more satisfying learning experiences.

Tutor Agency FAQ

Tutoring can strengthen your comprehension and learning skills in a variety of subjects. Whether you're falling behind and having a hard time understanding something taught in school or just want to have everything you learn solidified, a tutor is a great way to get one-on-one help. People who work with tutors usually do better on assignments and tests than they would otherwise.
Tutors can help identify areas where you need help with your studies. From there they will explain concepts in a way you understand to make sure you are able to continue building on what you learn. Tutors won't complete homework or assignments for you, but rather assist to make sure you can confidently do them on your own.
Depending on the tutoring service, you may be able to go in-person to sit down with a tutor. Otherwise, many tutoring services allow you to get help online either through chat or video conferencing. Both are effective methods! Decide how you learn best and look for a tutoring service that can cater to your needs in that way.
Absolutely! If you have a tutor who can help with two or more subjects, that is great. Otherwise, you can often work with a couple of different tutors from the same company to get help with all of the subjects you are working on.
It depends on the tutoring service, what they will be helping you with, and how long you plan on having a tutor. Some people want a tutor for months to help them through an entire course at school, while others only need help for one or two sessions to better understand a concept they are struggling with.
Most tutoring services will let you know the area of expertise your tutor has. Many tutors have graduated from college and some even have master's degrees. Tutors are put through rigorous testing processes before being hired by a tutoring company to make sure they will be able to help the students who come their way.
Almost any! Tutors can help with the normal school subjects like math, English, writing, science, and others. You can also get help studying for a test like the ACT, SAT, GMAT, and others. There are tutors out there to help with just about any subject, from Kindergarten - College levels.

Continued from above...

You can find a tutor to help with just about every subject out there. Most commonly, people hire tutors to help with math, literacy, English, or science-based subjects like biology or chemistry. Regardless of the subject, tutoring can be done online or in-person depending on the tutoring company you go with.

Is scheduling an issue? Using online tutoring services offers a range of benefits for students, including access to expert tutors who can provide targeted help in specific subjects, personalized learning plans to address your unique needs, and the flexibility to schedule sessions at your convenience. By collaborating with skilled tutors, you can gain the confidence and skills to tackle academic challenges effectively and excel in your studies - all conveniently delivered wherever you are through virtual sessions.

With so many online and in-person tutoring services out there, it can be overwhelming to try and pick the right one. Having a skilled tutor that's a good fit with you or your student is super personal and can take some time.

If you're not sure where to start, here are a few things to look for:

  • Price: If you're thinking about education, sometimes it's good to spend a little extra. However, if a student needs long-term tutoring, it can put a dent in your wallet. Not all tutoring services are priced the same, so keep an eye on the bottom line to make sure you're getting a good value for your investment and solid learning assistance.
  • Mode: Do you (or your student) learn better in person? Or maybe you prefer the flexibility of online meetings? Different tutoring centers offer a variety of options regarding the mode of delivery. Some even have asynchronous Q&A available. Keeping in mind how you learn best will help you narrow down the possibilities.
  • Guarantees: Spending a lot on tutoring can be nerve-wracking. So, check that the platform you're working with offers a guarantee. Many companies in our review offer money back or free tutoring if you don't get the results you want. This can help take some of the worries out of finding a new tutor.
  • Success stories: Promises from companies are great, but feedback from customers is better. Check out the reviews and ratings for both the tutoring platform you're considering and (if you can) the individual tutors. This can help you decide if the tutoring service matches your needs and will work with you (or your student) to get the results you want.

If you're ready to take learning to the next level, Top Consumer Reviews has evaluated the top tutoring services to give you a leg up. This way you can set aside the stress of research and focus on getting the learning assistance you need.
