Inspecting used vehicles across the nation for over a decade, POMCAR provides three levels of vehicle inspections to choose from. The mobile inspection service offers a comprehensive report, attempting to match the most qualified of their certified techs with expertise in the car to be examined. They are the only company to offer a service satisfaction guarantee. With mostly positive reviews and a stellar BBB rating, we rank POMCAR as our top choice for inspections on any used vehicle purchase.

For twenty years, AiM Certify's full-time inspectors have been examining cars for businesses and consumers. Offering one of the lower priced vehicle inspections on our list, the company also has an option to upgrade and have engine and transmission fluids tested to provide a limited guarantee. With 150-points of inspection and a vehicle grade, their thorough inspection process is somewhat marred by the fact that they do not use testing machines to read vehicle codes. When combined with the limited and mixed reviews, AiM Certify ranks as just above average on our list.

For over a decade, Car Saints has offered pre-purchase inspections for all types of used vehicles, including classics, RVs, and race vehicles. The company says it has three levels of service but website choices prove confusing. While sample reports are offered, there is no listing of items to be reviewed in their inspections. The limited but positive feedback combined with the conflicting information on the website lead us to rank Car Saints as just average.

In the automotive industry for over a century, Pep Boys provides the lowest-priced vehicle inspections on our list. Their thorough process includes a CARFAX report, though vehicles must be brought to a local Pep Boys shop to be inspected. However, when compared to mobile services, Pep Boys ranks as just average.

Classic car specialist Auto Appraisal Group completes pre-purchase vehicle inspections every day of the week, though it may take up to four days after it is scheduled for the inspection to occur. While the everyday used car inspection includes a history report at no additional fee, no prices are available online, which is inconvenient. Comprehensive reports and phone consultations are included in this service, which receives a wide range of reviews. As an option for cars of all types, we rank Auto Appraisal Group as "just okay".

A full-service mechanic with limited national presence, Christian Brothers Automotive is an option for vehicle inspections if you can persuade the seller to take the car to their local shop. There are no prices online for their vehicle examinations, and the list of items checked is much shorter than other inspectors we've reviewed. Below-average reviews and no BBB rating are disappointing for a company in business for over 40 years. Unless you have a standing relationship with your local Christian Brothers Automotive location, we suggest looking higher on our list for a vehicle inspection service.

Relatively new to the industry, Lemon Squad claims to be the largest pre-purchase vehicle inspection company in the nation. However, in that short time, the company has racked up a dismal BBB ranking and terrible customer reviews. While they offer some unique add-ons and review cars others won't, we don't think they're worth the risk. Charging higher than average for standard inspections, Lemon Squad is one to avoid.

With average pricing on pre-purchase vehicle inspections, OnCall Inspections does not provide any additional benefits to its customers. No estimated time to complete the inspections is listed and their refund policy is unclear. When combined with their poor rating and reviews, we suggest finding a better option for checking out any car you need to have inspected.

There are many reasons to have regular inspections for your car, including enhancing road safety, boosting vehicle performance, lowering repair costs, and increasing the resale value by maintaining the car well. These types of inspections are often performed by a local mechanic shop.
Another type of inspection, the pre-purchase inspection (PPI), is a different service you may find yourself needing when you're in the market for a new-to-you vehicle. Buying used can be a great option; however, it's also important to consider that each used vehicle may come with its own problems that are not disclosed to you prior to the sale. Therefore, a PPI can help.
A PPI is a thorough examination of an automobile to assess its current condition. Performed by someone who is knowledgeable about cars, these inspectors can range from mechanics and hobbyists to former insurance assessors and other industry experts. Typically, an inspector will provide a detailed assessment of the car's vital systems and overall condition in the hopes of offering a buyer the necessary information about whether or not to buy the car in question.
Is the car you are looking at out of state? Many companies provide mobile PPIs for this very reason. A mobile PPI can be extremely useful and save you a costly airline ticket or wasted time viewing something that is not what it was advertised to be. PPIs are also essential for those who don't know much about cars and want to make sure they're not getting a "lemon" (another name for a car with multiple defects).
PPIs offer more than a CARFAX or AutoCheck report. While those options can tell you service history, they are unable to assess if the car is currently safe to drive. Nor can they advise you on how much life is on the belts, hoses, engine mounts, and other key parts. Additionally, if you desire a value assessment - which some PPIs can provide - CARFAX and AutoCheck reports are not designed for that purpose.
