In 1908, Joe Barlow and John Seelig initiated their laundry venture with hand-powered washing machines from a Kansas City company. They used their mechanical knowledge to improve the existing machines with high-speed gearing. After they got their own version working, they secured manufacturing rights to produce their washers, founding Barlow & Seelig Manufacturing. Initially, they crafted a few washers named the "White Cloud” until 1928 when they rebranded the company as Speed Queen. Since then, the company has concentrated on innovating washers and dryers for customers worldwide.

Basic set: SF7007BE
This basic set by Speed Queen is one of the most expensive sets we've seen, period. Even among top washer and dryer combos from other competitors, we haven't seen a set quite this pricey. The starter set for Speed Queen is $5,124, though based on the features, we're not sure what you're paying for. The sizing and features are not as impressive here as with many competitors. For over $5,000, we expect the laundry to practically do itself! The SF7 Stacked Washer offers standard features such as Dynamic Balancing so that all cycles run to completion even when imbalanced. The Electric Dryer also includes Pet Plus, Sanitize, and Fast Cycle Times, along with a 5-year warranty. The wash offers "Special Cycles” offered by many washer brands that allow you to tailor each wash to your clothes or linens, while Delay Start allows you to start the laundry at your convenience. You can get 11 wash cycles, 4 dry cycles, and 3.5 cu. ft. in the washer and 7 cu. ft. for the dryer.
Top-tier set: SF7007BG
The price difference between the base set and the top set at Speed Queen isn't much. This combo costs $5,249. Really the only difference we could find when comparing them side by side was that the SF7007BG has better third-party agency approvals. The different sets have the same cu. ft. capacities, the same number of wash cycles, and most of the same features.
Many retailers charge for shipping
Speed Queen doesn't sell its washers directly, so to find out shipping costs, you'll have to locate a dealer or retailer near you that stocks them. Curiously, all the suggested retailers provided by Speed Queen in our area were smaller companies rather than big-name appliance stores like Best Buy or Lowe's. Surprisingly, most of these stores didn't offer shipping or installation for washer and dryer sets. We were surprised at this since Speed Queen washer and dryer sets are much more expensive than their competition and most other brands offer some kind of free shipping or installation.
Returns are based on the retailer
Because you can't buy Speed Queen washer/dryer sets directly from its website, the return policy doesn't apply either. Instead, you'll have to depend on the return policies of the retailer you choose. For example, one Speed Queen retailer offered only a 1-day return policy, and waiting longer would result in restocking fees.
Reviews show frustrations with Speed Queen
Speed Queen currently maintains a "B+” rating from the Better Business Bureau, slightly lower than most companies in our review. As for reviews on the washer and dryer sets themselves, it's difficult to find any outside of the Speed Queen website, which raises questions about the authenticity of those ratings. Reviews on third-party sites like ConsumerAffairs showed Speed Queen only has an average of 1.1 stars out of 5. Many customers express frustration with the lack of response from Speed Queen in resolving maintenance or broken parts issues, and there were multiple reviews with sound complaints for both the washer and the dryer.
Not enough value for your money
Despite providing a solid warranty, Speed Queen falls behind its competitors. Its washer and dryer sets are considerably pricey without any apparent justification. They frequently possess smaller capacities and fewer features compared to rival brands and there are very few differences between the top and base sets at Speed Queen. With numerous complaints and a below-average BBB score, Speed Queen receives a low rating in our evaluation.
