De Novo Hair Review 3 Star Rating

De Novo Hair

3 Star Rating
  • Cost: $599 - $1,349

De Novo means to "make anew", which is the goal of this hair company that has been around for over 10 years. They work to help customers with personal transformations and self-identification through the products they sell. At De Novo, they only sell wigs and boast not only to offer quality hair replacement options, but top-notch consulting services as well.

In Stock Vs Custom

When shopping online at De Novo, you choose between "in-stock styles" and "custom styles". In-stock means the wig you see is ready to ship and comes exactly as pictured and described. A custom wig allows the buyer to choose from over 25 hair colors, desired hair density/thickness, cap design, and hair length on the wig style they select.

All Wigs Are Real Human Hair

All of the wigs from De Novo are made of real human hair and will last anywhere from 3-6 months with heavy use before needing to have hair added or to be repaired.

Custom Wigs Can Be Expensive

Wigs range from $599 - $1,349 at De Novo. Some wigs can be even more expensive than this if you choose to add thickness or special colors to the hair. If you are spending more than $600, you must pay a 50% non-refundable deposit and the rest of the payment is due within 60 calendar days from the order date. Custom orders usually take between 7 and 9 weeks to complete, so there will be some lag between ordering a custom wig and receiving it.

Shipping Is Free

If you want to return an "in-stock style" wig, you must do this within 7 days of the date of delivery. If you purchased a custom wig, the sale is final and no returns are accepted. Shipping is completely free throughout all of the U.S.

Small In-stock Selection

De Novo does not have a big selection of wigs (about 20 total), but what they do have is mostly customizable, which really expands options for customers. You'll have to overlook the creepy-looking mannequins used to display all their wigs, which makes it harder to imagine how their products would look in real life. A couple of the wigs have a customer review to give you added reassurance about your purchase.

Not For The Budget-minded

Since De Novo only sells human-hair wigs, their pricing might put some customers over budget. If you're looking for an inexpensive wig, this is definitely not the place. It is obvious that you'll get high quality from De Novo, but we do wish there was more customer feedback to be found outside of their own website. They are unrated by the Better Business Bureau and don't have a lot of buzz elsewhere. Overall, we'd say if you're a customer in the market for a custom wig and you're okay waiting a couple months for delivery, De Novo is a great place for you to look.

Where is the Best Place to Buy a Wig?

There are many reasons you might want to buy a wig, including a cheaper alternative to medical therapies for restoring baldness, hiding a bad hair day, changing up your hair color and style easily, or even for a costume! Whatever the reason, wigs are gaining popularity and it's important that you find the best retailer to meet your needs.

There are wig boutiques where you can browse and try on wigs in person, but they are becoming scarce and are often a much more expensive alternative to online shopping. Most people will find that they only have the option of shopping on the internet for wigs, which is great since you can compare prices and have access to thousands of different choices.

Wig Store FAQ

Wigs might be purchased as an alternative way to easily style your hair, to cover up baldness or hair loss, or even to use for a costume. While most wigs are purchased by and for women, there are options for men and children as well.
Medical wigs don't differ much from normal human-hair wigs. They are meant for people experiencing hair loss from alopecia, chemotherapy, or other illness. They often include a cap and base that are specifically made for a sensitive scalp.
Wigs are made of either synthetic material or human hair. Synthetic wigs are made of plastic or acrylic fibers that look like hair. Human hair wigs are made from literal human hair, usually sold or donated by women in other countries who either need a way to make some extra income or who have shaved it off as part of a religious ceremony.
It is best to measure the circumference of your head so you can accurately use size guides that different retailers provide. Some come with sizing as general as "adult man" , "youth girl" , etc. so these types of wigs will usually have some type of adjustable feature to make sure it fits snugly on your head.
Most wigs have an adjustable velcro strap that allows you to comfortably place your wig to fit your head size and shape. Others come attached to a cap that fits tightly on your head. Most wig retailers also sell adhesive bands or clips that can be used to keep your wig in place.
You can expect to pay anywhere from $20 - $2,000 for a wig. The biggest factor in pricing is whether your wig is made of synthetic or human hair. Synthetic wigs look less natural and cost much less to make, therefore making them cheaper. Human hair wigs are usually at least a few hundred dollars and make it harder to tell whether you're wearing a wig or your natural hair.
If you have a synthetic wig, you'll need to purchase wig shampoo and conditioner. Mix the wig shampoo with cool water and dip the wig up and down in the mixture. Carefully rinse the wig in cool water and repeat the process with the wig conditioner. Rinse again and then pat dry and hang the wig loosely to dry at room temperature. With a human hair wig, you can apply a small amount of mild, high-quality shampoo to the hair (avoiding the scalp area) and carefully comb it in a downwards motion. Avoid scrubbing, twisting, or massaging the shampoo into the wig. For drying, first pat the wig with a towel to soak up as much of the water as possible, and then hang dry the wig on a wig stand or with a blow dryer on your head if you are in a hurry.
Most wig retailers have a return policy that allows customers to send back their product if they are unsatisfied. Oftentimes these returns come with a restocking fee, so be sure to read the return details for a wig from whatever company you choose to buy from.

When purchasing a wig online, we suggest you keep the following criteria in mind:

  • Selection. When shopping for a wig, you likely have a color, length, or style in mind that you want. Find a retailer that has a big selection of wigs to make sure you find exactly the one you want.
